LETTER FROM THE SENIOR DIRECTOR DEAR FRIENDS, was living in New York City when I turned 21. When my birthday approached, I drove to Montauk, Long Island, and spent the day alone at the beach. I remember laying on the dunes and watching surfers bobble on the waves in the distance. Why was I feeling so contemplative about turning 21? I can’t remember, except that it’s a milestone year for most grown-ups, and I probably wanted a memory that would make that birthday one to remember in the future. As the afternoon lazily rolled along, someone started building a mobile stage—complete with rigging and lighting—several hundred yards away on the dunes, and by dusk the entire scene resembled a campy 60’s beach movie. Turns out, Paul Simon was performing a free concert to raise awareness about beach erosion at Montauk. And oh, why not, I remember thinking? Nothing important was happening in the world anymore. The 1980s were over. A new decade had begun. It was 1990. For those of us raised during the generation of Reaganomics, AIDS, the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, Apartheid,

8

and the birth of MTV, 1990 didn’t seemingly hold too much pizzazz. What could possibly come next that could compare to what came before? Paul Simon’s quibble with beach erosion seemed the biggest deal on the horizon. Three days later on August 2, 100,000 Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait, initiating the Gulf War. A year later, the USSR collapsed. What began as a lethargic, listless, decade turned— almost frighteningly—into one of the most talked-about, violent, and controversial periods in world history. Sitting on the beach that lazy afternoon watching surfers on my 21st birthday, I never saw it coming. Flash-forward twenty-six years later to 2016. The North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is turning 21. And how about that? In the months leading up to this year’s festival, I wondered if this event was still relevant and socially important. 21 is only a milestone for those entering adult life, and not for celebrating film festivals, it seems. Once again, I contemplated. And once again, the world did not fail to blindside me.

Since opening the floodgates for submissions last March, North Carolina became a national LGBT focal point because of HB2. The deadliest mass shooting in US history occurred at a gay Florida nightclub in mid-June. I will merely observe those two points and not belabor them here. All at once, the purpose of this festival becomes crystal-clear: To educate, to inform, and even to entertain during a time when the world seemingly has another agenda, that’s our purpose in 2016. Whether this is your first time or your twenty-first at NCGLFF, we’re glad you’re here. Thank you for helping us reach this 21st milestone. I hope you experience memories at NCGLFF 2016 that make this birthday as memorable as a lazy afternoon on the beach with Paul Simon.

Jim Carl, Senior Director Carolina Theatre Of Durham, Inc.

#WeAreNotThis The North Carolina Gay + Lesbian Film Festival (NCGLFF) is dedicated to celebrating lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and queer life through film and live events designed to bring the LGBTQ community together. The NCGLFF stands with the City Council of Durham in opposition to the North Carolina state legislation House Bill 2 (HB2) passed earlier this year. As has been the case for years, a gender neutral bathroom will be available to festival attendees. All guests at the Carolina Theatre are encouraged to use the bathroom facilities that matches their gender identity. Indeed, we are not this — and never have been. Take Action

TURNOUTNC.ORG

In Memoriam “This is an especially heartbreaking day for all our friends — our fellow Americans — who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The shooter targeted a nightclub where people came together to be with friends, to dance and to sing, and to live. The place where they were attacked is more than a nightclub — it is a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds, and to advocate for their civil rights. So this is a sobering reminder that attacks on any American — regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation — is an attack on all of us and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as a country. And no act of hate or terror will ever change who we are or the values that make us Americans.” — President Barack Obama | June 12, 2016 The North Carolina Gay + Lesbian Film Festival and Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc. ask that you hold the victims and survivors of the attack on the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando in your thoughts and prayers during this year’s event. This story of star-crossed love provides a nuanced depiction of working-class life in rural America. CHANGING MOVEMENT INTO LIGHT

TRANSGENDER NORTH AMERICAN SHORTS (UNITED STATES, 98 MIN)

Here’s a collection of eight narrative and documentary shorts about being transgender, genderqueer, or intersex in America. Michael Siebert and Shay Sullivan are two very different individuals with a common goal: to advocate for truth by helping society realize that gender does not equate to identity in Everyone in Between. A woman takes herself to dinner for the very first time in First Night Out. After emigrating from Israel, Noam is happily living in New York with an older woman, but will things change when an old lover comes to town for a visit in The Friend from Tel Aviv? House Not Home follows the journey of a gender-fluid high school student from bullying to self-acceptance. Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher follows the journey of a white, transgender, Okie man learning the truth about himself, his family, and Oklahoma history. Stella Walsh was one of the most celebrated female athletes on the planet. Her popularity continued for decades after winning a gold medal in the 1932 Olympics, until she was killed in a robbery and it was discovered that she had ambiguous gender. After being estranged from his family for 3 years, Julian returns home to spend Thanksgiving with his family in Transcend. Will they let Julian have his seat at the table when their only daughter returns as a man? In Vessels, a young transgender woman considers a dangerous black market “medical” procedure that may be her only option in gaining a more feminine body. AUGUST 13 AUGUST 14 AUGUST 16 AUGUST 20

Four young men, each somewhere near the crossroads where boyhood and adulthood meet, find their lives intertwined in the strange world of low-budget porn and male burlesque photo shoots in New York City. CLOSET MONSTER

(CANADA, 90 MIN)

Teenage lust, woozy visions, and a talking hamster voiced by Isabella Rossellini shape this queer coming-of-age tale that’s as strange, scary and sublime as the real experience. Oscar (Connor Jessup) is an arty teen with a turbulent home life and a smoldering crush on hardware store “bad boy” Wilder (Aliocha Schneider). An aspiring makeup effects artist, Oscar spends his days concocting wild photo shoots with best friend Gemma (Sofia Banzhaf) and his nights weathering the neglect of an aloof mother and volatile father. Haunted by a gay bashing he witnessed as a child, he begins having surreal nightmares—rendered with grisly Cronenberg-esque flair that simmer to the surface of his mind and body, as his burgeoning queer desires do the same. Winner of multiple awards on the festival circuit and directed by Stephen Dunn, Closet Monster is deliriously dark, but with a cheeky comic wit. This film contains depictions of homophobic violence. DEEP RUN

(US, 83 MIN)

Executive produced by LGBTQ supporter Susan Sarandon and shot by first-time filmmaker Hillevi Loven, Deep Run is a powerful verité portrait of trans life in rural North Carolina. Exiled by her family and rejected by an ex, 17-year-old Spazz has no one to lean on for support. But when Spazz falls in love again and summons up the courage to become Cole, a strong-willed trans man, his candid humor and steadfast, all-inclusive Christian beliefs counter the bigotry he experiences daily. This raw documentary reveals rebirth and courage within America’s deeply conservative Bible Belt. Preceded by: BrocKINGton reveals as much about the human character as it does about the societal pressures to fit in. GIRLS LOST (Pojkarna)

(SWEDEN, 106 MIN)

Alexandra-Therese Keining returns with Girls Lost, a tender coming-of-age film that is enveloped in supernatural allure. This sumptuous feast dazzles the senses with striking visuals, a heart-pounding score and piercing social commentary. Three teenage girls, Kim, Bella and Momo, are social outcasts. Relentlessly bullied by classmates and abandoned by their teachers, they discover a mysterious flower that attracts butterflies and smells of vanilla, its black leaves oozing a liquid that the girls daringly drink. They awaken as boys. Girls Lost skillfully fuses fragile social structures, gender fluidity and a desire for authentic connection in a way that is as insightful as it is enthralling. I LOVE YOU BOTH (US, 90 MIN)

Twins Donny and Krystal (played by real-life siblings Doug and Kristin Archibald) are stuck. This variety of ways people identify in the film include a butch lesbian; a feminine-looking transmasculine-identified pregnant fairy-oriented gay man; a trans-identified very pregnant masculine person, post top surgery, whose partner is inducing lactation so their baby can be breastfed; a “generally female-identified” pregnant person with a beard who’s married to a genderqueer transman; and the director, who is a masculine-of-center mixed-gender person who gave birth to two sons in the mid 1990's. Ibrahim (Ibo), a young German of Turkish descent, leads a double life, living with his traditionbound family and spending his days looking for a respectable job. But outside his parent’s apartment he is a confident gay man who works in a sex shop and is on the hunt for Mr. Right. One day, the charismatic and self-described straight Ali appears at his door and Ibo is instantly obsessed with the wrestler and petty criminal, secretly following him around the city. What begins as a one-sided infatuation quickly evolves into a flirtatious yet meaningful friendship. In German with English subtitles AUGUST 12 AUGUST 14 AUGUST 19
