RETROAMORE ROM-COMS, TEARJERKERS, AND INSPIRATIONAL MOVIES FROM 1920-1996

SOYLENT GREEN (PG, 1973, 97 min)

Agatha Christie’s DEATH ON THE NILE (PG, 1978, 130 min)

After the death of the patriarch, the Dashwood family takes a step down in society and faces hardship as they are four women who are virtually penniless. Elinor and Marianne, two sisters with different perspectives on life, keep one another in line and support one another through death, hardship and a love and friendship. Starring Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet, and Hugh Grant.

The self-destructive and needy wealthy teenager Harold is obsessed by death and spends his leisure time attending funerals, watching the demolishing of buildings, simulating suicides trying to get attention from his indifferent mother, and having sessions with his psychologist. When Harold meets the anarchist seventy-nine-year-old Maude at a funeral, they become friends and the old lady discloses other perspectives of the cycle of life for him. Meanwhile, his mother enlists him in a dating service and tries to force Harold to join the army.

Soylent Green is landmark science-fiction, a riveting entertainment and a cautionary tale that holds a mirror to a tomorrow rife with ecological disaster. Charlton Heston stars as Thorn, a detective trying to solve a murder in an overpopulated Big Apple gone rotten in 2022. His roommate, played by Edward G. Robinson, tries telling him about a better time on Earth before there were no more resources or room left; but Heston doesn't care. He’s trailing a murderer and the trail leads to a stunning discovery. 2PM

Jane Austen could never have imagined that her 1816 novel Emma could be turned into a satirical look at ultra-rich teenagers in Beverly Hills. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is a pampered upper-class girl who cares less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible, as well as fighting with her hunky stepbrother (Paul Rudd). But Cher is looking for the perfect boyfriend, whom she ends up finding where she least expected.

John Hurt gives the performance of a lifetime as John Merrick, the worst "freak" known to Victorian medical science, a man whose body is hideously distorted into a grotesque parody of an elephant. Rescued from a travelling freak show by Anthony Hopkins, Merrick gradually reveals himself to be a strangely sweet and gentle man, remarkably unembittered by the degradation and torment he suffered at the circus. The Elephant Man is a compelling, moving and enchanting story.

As Hercule Poirot (Peter Ustinov) enjoys a luxurious cruise down the Nile, a newlywed heiress is found murdered on board and every elegant passenger becomes a prime suspect. Can Poirot identify the killer and motive before the ship of clues reaches the end of its murderous journey? Bette Davis, David Niven, Angela Lansbury, Maggie Smith, Mia Farrow, George Kennedy, and Jack Warden, co-star in this sumptuous Oscar-winning classic, filmed on location throughout exotic Egypt. 4:30 PM

LONGER-RUNNING FILMS FROM 1920-1996

Steven Spielberg’s 1941 (PG, 1979, 146 min)

Lavish effects sequences highlight this hilarious, all-star extravaganza set in Los Angeles just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when fear of a Japanese invasion threw the city into a state of pandemonium. Screwball characters run wild on Hollywood Boulevard as manic servicemen, zealous store owners, teary-eyed girls and bickering Nazis are thrown together in this fast-rising comic souffle that even features a sendup of Spielberg's own Jaws opening.

Francis Ford Coppola’s APOCALYPSE NOW (1979 Theatrical Cut) (R, 1979, 153 min)

Capt. Willard (Martin Sheen) is assigned to find and deal with AWOL Col. Kurtz (Marlon Brando), rumored to have set himself up in the Cambodian jungle as a local godhead. Along the way Willard encounters Col. Kilgore (Robert Duvall), draftees who prefer to surf and do drugs, a USO Playboy Bunny show turned into a riot, and a jumpy photographer (Dennis Hopper) telling wild tales about Kurtz. By the time Willard sees the heads mounted on stakes near Kurtz's compound, he knows Kurtz has gone insane.

Francis Ford Coppola’s THE GODFATHER (R, 1972, 175 min)

Francis Ford Coppola's Masterpiece features Marlon Brando in his Oscar-winning role as the patriarch of the Corleone family. Director Coppola masterfully balances the story between the Corleone's family life and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel and featuring career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan and Robert Duvall, this searing and brilliant film garnered ten Academy Award nominations, and won three including Best Picture of 1972.

Akira Kurosawa’s SEVEN SAMURAI (1954, Japan, 207 min)

One of the most thrilling movie epics of all time, Seven Samurai tells the story of a sixteenth-century village whose desperate inhabitants hire the eponymous warriors to protect them from invading bandits. This three-hour ride from Akira Kurosawa—featuring legendary actors Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura—seamlessly weaves philosophy and entertainment, delicate human emotions and relentless action, into a rich, evocative, and unforgettable tale of courage and hope.

Along with writer's block and the demons of the hotel haunting him Jack has a complete mental breakdown and the situation takes a sinister turn for the worse.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s SOLARIS (PG, 1972, Russia, 167 min)

Ground control has been receiving strange transmissions from the remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to investigate, he experiences the strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his own consciousness. Legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky (Andrei Rublev) gives us a brilliantly original science-fiction epic that challenges our conceptions about love, truth, and humanity itself.

RETROCLASSICS DRAMAS, WAR, WESTERNS, AND MYSTERIES FROM 1920-1996

John le Carre’s THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD

Robert Wise’s RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP

The acclaimed, best-selling novel by John le Carré, about a Cold War spy on one final dangerous mission in East Germany, is transmuted by director Martin Ritt into a film every bit as ruthless as the book. Richard Burton is superb as Alec Leamas, whose relationship with a beautiful librarian, played by Claire Bloom, puts his assignment in jeopardy. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is a hard-edged and tragic thriller, suffused with the political and social consciousness that defined Ritt’s career.

Rich Richardson (Clark Gable) is a hard-driving submarine officer with a single-minded purpose—to seek out and smash the Japanese destroyer he believes sunk his former ship. Richardson drills his men and first officer Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster) to the point of mutiny as he relentlessly trains them for the battle ahead. When word comes of the destroyer's position, Richardson finally confronts his foe, unaware that an even greater enemy lurks nearby…one who's been targeting him for a watery grave.

(PG, 1965, 112 min)

(NR, 1958, 93 min)

Walter Hill’s THE WARRIORS

Ira Levin’s THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL

A battle of gigantic proportions is looming in the neon underground of New York City. The armies of the night number 100,000; they outnumber the police 5 to 1; and tonight they're after the Warriors—a street gang blamed unfairly for a rival gang leader's death. Members of the Warriors fight for their lives, seek to survive in the urban jungle and learn the meaning of loyalty.

Laurence Olivier, Gregory Peck and James Mason star in this heartgrabbing thriller. Elderly Nazi hunter Ezra Lieberman (Olivier) has made a life of seeking out the last remnants of the Third Reich. But when he investigates a mysterious plot to assassinate 94 seemingly unrelated men from around the world, he makes a terrifying discovery that could somehow launch the Fourth Reich.

(R, 1979, 94 min)

Otto Preminger’s LAURA (NR, 1944, 88 min)

Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney) has been murdered. Tough New York detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) investigates the killing, methodically questioning the chief suspects: Waspish columnist Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), wastrel socialite Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price), and Carpenter's wealthy "patroness" Ann Treadwell. The deeper he gets into the case, the more fascinated he becomes by the enigmatic Laura, literally falling in love with the girl's painted portrait.

(R, 1978, 125 min)

Mervyn Leroy’s THE BAD SEED (NR, 1956, 129 min)

Patty McCormack plays Rhoda, a too-good-to-be-true grade schooler who exhibits a vicious streak whenever things don't turn out her way. When one of Rhoda's schoolmates is killed, the girl's mother comes to the horrible conclusion that Rhoda was responsible for the death—a suspicion fueled by the discovery that Rhoda, who was adopted as an infant, is the daughter of a convicted murderess. Realizing that Rhoda must be stopped, she must make a terrible decision about the daughter she loves.

Bruce Lee’s ENTER THE DRAGON

Hotter than Bond. Richard Roundtree plays the smart, tough, confident private investigator whose hunt for a kidnapped woman puts him in the middle of feuding syndicates. Gordan Parks directs from a screenplay that Ernest Tidyman (Oscar-winner for The French Connection) co-scripted from his own novel. John Shaft is an icon of change from an era of change. Shaft still tells it like it is.

The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, Enter the Dragon was his entrée into Hollywood. Lee is a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of a bloodthirsty Asian crime lord through his annual international martial arts tournament, but the highlight is Lee's brutal one-on-one with the claw-fisted mastermind in the dynamic hall-of-mirrors battle. Also starring John Saxon and Jim Kelly.

Alan J. Pakula’s ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN

THE CHINA SYNDROME

In the Watergate Building, lights go on and four burglars are caught in the act. That night triggered revelations that drive a U.S. President from office. Washington reporters Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) grabbed the story and stayed with it through doubts, denials and discouragement. Based on the novel, Men won four 1976 Academy Awards.

The white-knuckle thriller that famously predicted the Three Mile Island meltdown. Reporter Kimberly Wells (Jane Fonda) and cameraman Richard Adams (Michael Douglas) are covering a Los Angeles power plant when the unthinkable occurs—a nuclear accident that could have wiped out Southern California. And Richard caught it all on tape. When their TV station refuses to air the footage, Wells and Adams recruit plant supervisor Jack Godell (Jack Lemmon) to expose the terrifying truth.

Richard Lester’s THE THREE MUSKETEERS

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD

Michael York plays D'Artagnan, the provincial, would-be swashbuckler who travels to Paris to make his name. There he encounters the eponymous heroes: cynical Athos (Oliver Reed), dashing Aramis (Richard Chamberlain), and arrogant Porthos (Frank Finlay). The trio introduces him to the world of court intrigue as they work to protect the Queen (Geraldine Chaplin) from the schemes of the villainous Richelieu (Charlton Heston) and his followers, Rochefort (Christopher Lee) and Milady (Faye Dunaway).

(G, 1938, 102 min) The pinnacle of Errol Flynn's string of swashbuckling adventures. One of the greatest films, not only of the 1930s, but of all time! Sir Robin of Locksley, defender of downtrodden Saxons, runs afoul of Norman authority and is forced to turn outlaw. With his band of Merry Men, he robs from the rich, gives to the poor and still has time to woo the lovely Maid Marian (Olivia de Havilland), foil the cruel Sir Guy of Gisbourne (Basil Rathbone), and keep the nefarious Prince John (Claude Rains) off the throne.

Bill Murray is a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life. RETROFANTASMA HORROR, SCI-FI, AND ACTION-ADVENTURE FROM 1920-1996

ALICE SWEET ALICE

PIECES

When ten-year-old Karen (Brooke Shields in her first screen appearance) is killed in church on the occasion of her first communion, her seemingly innocent older sister Alice (Paula Sheppard) becomes the prime suspect. Alice's estranged father takes up the investigation to prove her innocence. Alice, Sweet Alice is really in the Hitchcock mold; a stylish, smartly executed psychological suspense thriller.

It’s exactly what you think. A heavy-breathing, trenchcoat-wearing, chainsaw-wielding psychopath is carving the curvy campus co-eds, taking certain body parts and leaving the rest for the cops to trip over, all to collect body parts from each victim to create the likeness of his mother who he savagely murdered with an axe when he was ten years old!

(R, 1975, 98 min)

Steven Spielberg’s INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM

(R, 1983, 89 min)

George Miller’s THE ROAD WARRIOR (R, 1982, 95 min)

The second George Lucas/Steven Spielberg Indiana Jones epic remains an ingenious adventure that showcases one of Hollywood's finest filmmaking teams in vintage form. Join Indy, Willie, and Short Round as they investigate a bizarre cult who practices human sacrifice. This is the most cheerfully exciting adventure since Raiders, and it’s high praise to say it's not so much a sequel as an equal.

A strong candidate for the most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled); the second part of George Miller's postapocalyptic quadrilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. In a post-nuclear war world, Mel Gibson plays Max, a lone adventurer who drives the roads of outback Australia in an endless search for gasoline.

Michele Soavi’s STAGE FRIGHT

Dario Argento’s INFERNO

The terrifying first film from the director of Cemetery Man. While a group of actors rehearse a new musical about a mass murderer, a notorious psychopath escapes from a nearby asylum. But when the show's director locks his cast in the theater overnight, the madman is accidentally locked inside as well. Now, a killer with acting in his blood has gone berserk for the blood of actors and the stage is set for one unforgettable evening of shock, suspense and unstoppable carnage.

A young woman stumbles upon a mysterious diary that reveals the secrets of `The Three Mothers` and unleashes a nightmare world of demonic evil. As the unstoppable horror spreads from Rome to New York City, this unholy trinity must be stopped before the world is submerged in the blood of the innocent. Written and directed by Dario Argento, Inferno is considered to be the sequel to his classic Suspiria.

This masterwork of stylish gore is one of the most beloved cult slashers of the 1980's, and features outstanding make-up by Tom Savini.

THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW (R, 1987, 97 min)

Wes Craven directs this terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo. A Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the power to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses.

WOLFEN

(R, 1981, 114 min)

A real-estate tycoon, his coke-binging wife and a slum wino have something grisly in common: They’re the latest victims in a series of random murders. A veteran NYPD detective suspects the killings may be supernatural and deliberate—ages-old beings of cunning intelligence and incredible power. Wolfen is a full-fanged, fullthrottle horror ride.
