LETTER FROM

MARK J. AMBROSE

Co-Chair, NCGLFF Programming Committee

WELCOME Welcome to the 24th and Final NC Gay and Lesbian Film Festival! What? Final?!!! No, don’t worry. Our festival isn’t going away, but as of next year our name will change. Starting in 2020, our 25th anniversary year, we will become the OutSouth Queer Film Festival. Many of you may be asking why we are changing the name of the festival. The reason, quite simply, is that our current name no longer reflects who we are. Since our inception, NCGLFF has strived to bring the best gay and lesbian themed films to our North Carolina audience. But we are more than just a gay and lesbian film festival, and we have been for quite a while. For many years, we have been broadening the range of films we have screened. When putting together a LGBTQ film festival like ours, our major limitation is what films are submitted for our consideration. Over the years, the quality of films has gone up and the variety of films has increased. This is due, in part, to the increasing quality and diversity of queer cinema overall. Better quality, higher budget films are being produced. And LGBTQIA filmmakers are addressing a more diverse range of topics and making films that reflect a more diverse community. We also have better films to choose from because NCGLFF has become well known

among filmmakers as one of the better LGBTQ film festivals. Filmmakers love the hospitality that they receive here and think of us a place they want their new films to screen. This year’s festival will be our most diverse ever. As always, we have included a range of genres – comedy, drama, romance, horror, documentaries, musicals, and thrillers. For several years, we have been able to program excellent films with transgender characters and themes, but for the first time, we are presenting a feature-length film focusing on genderqueer/non-binary characters. Another first is a romantic comedy featuring polyamorous and bisexual characters. We aim to include films that represent the range of our LGBTQ+ community. So, “gay and lesbian” doesn’t adequately cover who we are, but why “OutSouth”? We are already the 2nd largest LGBTQ+ film festival in the Southeast in terms of number of patrons (only Miami is larger). We also have become one of the largest LGBT film festivals in the country based on the number of films we screen. Therefore, we have chosen a name that reflects our role as one of the biggest and best LGBTQ+ film festival in the South. And why are we such a successful festival? Many, many people have been responsible of keeping this

festival going and growing for these many years. First and foremost are the amazing Carolina Theatre staff, and especially Senior Director of Film Programming, Jim Carl. This festival would also not be possible without the efforts of our multitude of volunteers, both those that you see staffing the theatre venues and information booth and those who worked behind the scenes to put the festival together. Our donors are key to keeping the festival on a sound financial footing. LGBTQIA filmmakers produce works worth showing and choose to submit them to our festival. Finally, this festival could not succeed without our attendees. (What point is there to a film festival without an audience?) Thanks to all of you!!! Again, welcome! Enjoy the festival. While tastes in film do vary, I hope that each of you will find at least one film that will utterly delight you. I hope that you will not only be entertained, but that you’ll also see yourself reflected on the screen, and that these films will make an impact on you, challenge your views, and inspire your actions.

OPENING NIGHT SELECTION

OFFICIAL SELECTION OF THE 2019 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL!

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT

DIRECTED BY HANNAH PEARL UTT (US, 98 MIN) When Rachel’s (Hannah Pearl Utt) charming date asks if she has roommates, she quietly admits that she does. What she doesn’t admit is that she lives above a small theatre with her father Mel (Mandy Patankin), her sister Jackie (Jen Tullock), and her preteen niece, Dodge. It’s a real romance killer. The truth is Rachel has no time for relationships. She takes responsibility for almost every aspect of her family’s lives, from housekeeping to managing their upcoming theatre show. When Mel suddenly passes away, everything they know is put in jeopardy. If this isn’t enough, their father’s outdated will reveals that the mother they believed to be dead is, in fact, alive and is playing a lead role in a popular soap opera! Also co-starring Alec Baldwin, Judith Light, and Tim Daly. THEMES: Arts & Literature | Lesbian | Relationships | Parenting/Family

OFFICIAL SELECTION OF THE 2019 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL!

CHANGING THE GAME

DIRECTED BY MICHAEL BARNETT (US, 95 MIN) Michael Barnett’s dynamic documentary takes us into the lives of three high school athletes—all at different stages of their athletic programs, personal lives, and unique paths as transgender teens. Their stories span across the U.S.—from Sarah, a skier and teen policymaker in New Hampshire, to Andraya, a track star in Connecticut openly transitioning into her authentic self. The film centers on Mack Beggs, who made headlines last year when he became the Texas State Champion in wrestling and was heralded as a hero by some while receiving hate and threats from others. Trans athletes have to work harder than their cisgender peers in order to thrive in their field while also having the courage and resilience to face daily harassment and discrimination. The kids in this film have found sports as a way to channel the negativity around them into a positive, to gain a sense of self-worth and validation. This film is their urgent, articulate plea for acceptance. THEMES: Documentary | Sports | Transgender | Youth (13+)

STILL WAITING IN THE WINGS

DIRECTED BY Q. ALLAN BROCKA (US, 111 MIN) From the creator of the award-winning stop-motion animated series Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World and the director of Boy Culture, Eating Out, and 2014’s outrageous musical comedy, Waiting in the Wings, comes this musical comedy sequel. Still Waiting In The Wings follows the trials and triumphs of a ragtag team of actors waiting tables in Times Square. The film picks up the story of stripperturned-actor, Tony (Adam Huss) and naive musical theatre enthusiast, Anthony (Jeffrey A. Johns), and their friends. While dreaming of the glow of the footlights next door, the reality of slinging hash under florescent lights mixes sweet aspirations with bitter drama. There’s no people like show people and there’s no telling what can happen when they’re pitted against each other. The supporting cast is a Hollywood Who’s Who including Lee Meriwether, Chita Rivera, Cindy Williams, Bruce Vilanch, Patricia Richardson, Sally Struthers, and Edward Asner, just to name a few! ADAM

DIRECTED BY RHYS ERNST (US, 95 MIN) Native North Carolinian Rhys Ernst directs this tale about awkward, selfconscious Adam Freeman (Nicholas Alexander), who has just finished his junior year of high school in 2006. When his cool older sister Casey (Margaret Qualley) suggests he visit her in New York for the summer, Adam has visions of meeting a girl and finally gaining some actual life experience. The fantasy doesn’t materialize exactly as expected. Casey has enthusiastically embraced life amidst Brooklyn’s young LGBTQ community and invites Adam to tag along with her to queer bars, marriage equality rallies and other happenings. When Adam falls at first sight for Gillian (Bobbi Salvör Menuez), a smart, beautiful young woman in this new crowd, she mistakenly assumes he is trans. Flummoxed and enamored, he haplessly goes along with her assumption, resulting in an increasingly complex comedy - and tragedy - of errors he’s ill-equipped to navigate. GAY CHORUS DEEP SOUTH

DIRECTED BY DAVID CHARLES (US, 100 MIN) In response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws and the divisive 2016 election, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarks on a tour of the American Deep South, showcasing fine music, confronting political and religious intolerance, and challenging their own troubled past with the church. Joined by the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, they bring a message of music, love, and acceptance to communities often on the frontlines against intolerance. The road trip forces Conductor Tim Seelig and a handful of other Chorus members who fled the south to confront their own fears, pain, and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF A PLAY DIRECTED BY EMERSON COLLINS (US, 104 MIN) Sordid Lives creator Del Shores’ new film of his one-man show, directed by Emerson Collins, proves once and for all that he is not a writer, he’s a self-proclaimed thief! In Six Characters In Search Of A Play, riffing on Pirandello’s classic title, Shores brings to life six one-of-a-kind characters he has met in real life that haven’t quite made it into one of his plays, films or TV shows. The audience will hear the truth behind how he collected these eccentrics and their stories as he portrays his hilarious, off-the-rails encounters with them. The audience will meet Yvonne, the anti-vegetarian Dallas waitress; Sarah, a Trump-hating elderly actress with an inhaler in one hand and a cigarette in the other; Jimmy Ray, the evolving, Magic Mike-loving latent Georgia redneck; Loraine, the once-brilliant drama teacher who has lost her damn mind and is now obsessed with porn; Marsha, the monkey-hating lesbian with COPD; and Aunt Bobby Sue, the racist Republican with a heart of gold. SPECIAL EVENT SCREENING

NEWLY RESTORED FOR THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STONEWALL RIOTS!

BEFORE STONEWALL

DIRECTED BY GRETA SCHILLER (US, 1984, 87 MIN) In 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, leading to three nights of rioting by the city’s gay community. With this outpouring of courage and unity the gay liberation movement had begun. Before Stonewall pries open the closet door, setting free the dramatic story of the sometimes horrifying public and private existences experienced by LGBT Americans since the early 1900’s. Revealing and often humorous, this widely acclaimed film relives the emotionallycharged sparking of today’s gay rights movement, from the events that led to the fevered 1969 riots to many other milestones in the brave fight for acceptance. Experience the fascinating and unforgettable, decade-bydecade history of homosexuality in America through eye-opening historical footage and amazing interviews with those who lived through an often brutal closeted history. Narrated by iconic author Rita Mae Brown. Groundbreaking interviews with Ann Bannon, Martin Duberman, Allen Ginsberg, Barbara Gittings, Harry Hay, Mabel Hampton, Dr. Evelyn Hooker, Frank Kameny, Audre Lorde, Richard Bruce Nugent, Jose Sarria and many more. THEMES: Activism | Biography/History | Discrimination | Documentary Gay | Human Rights | Lesbian | Racism

AN ALMOST ORDINARY SUMMER DIRECTED BY SIMONE GODANO (ITALY, 100 MIN)

In this hilarious and affecting romantic comedy, two very different families spend their holidays in the same house at the seaside: the aristocratic Castelvecchios, open-minded, eccentric, but quite selfish; and the working-class Petagnas, very tight-knit, and united around solid conservative values. What brought such distant worlds together? Only Tony and Carlo, the two middle-aged heads of the families, know! The unexpected announcement of their engagement will disrupt an apparently ordinary summer, and turn the lives of everyone around them upside down. But their commitment is soon put to the test by their stunned families, especially the eldest children, who are convinced that the match is wrong for all sorts of reasons and set out to derail the nuptials. Will love triumph in the end, or is it (as the Italian title would put it) a blessing and a curse? ANNE+

DIRECTED BY VALERIE BISSCHEROUX (NETHERLANDS, 86 MIN)

When it comes to queer women and dating, we often recognize universal rites of passage: first love, the older woman, the closeted—or the wild—one. In this smart, sexy, new web series from the Netherlands, Anne is looking back on her liaisons with various girlfriends as she moves into a new apartment. Each episode features one of Anne’s past relationships, from its swoony beginnings to the depressing, frustrating, or inevitable end. Along the way, Anne learns a great deal about herself and what she wants. This series takes an honest, funny look at what it means to be young and in love. And as Anne works her way through her past romances, you just might recognize some of your own ex-girlfriends. All six episodes of Anne+ will be screened in this program. While the topic of same sex couples and the desire to raise a family is not new, the strength of Mom + Mom is the touching and beautifully nuanced struggles that go along with the desire. Based on the true story of the director. In Italian with English subtitles. THEMES: Comedy | Drama | Lesbian | Parenting/Family SUN, AUG 18 TUE, AUG 20

LAST FERRY

SECOND STAR ON THE RIGHT

A young gay lawyer arrives on Fire Island to explore his sexuality and becomes witness to a murder. When Joseph (Ramon Torres), an introverted young lawyer, sets out to sow his wild oats on Fire Island, he is immediately greeted with disappointment: it’s off-season, and the island is dead. But he persists and even attempts a hook-up, which leaves him drugged and mugged. In his impaired state, he witnesses a shocking murder in the desolate Meat Rack. Trying desperately to flee, Joseph finds himself rescued by a handsome local named Cameron. But as Joseph recuperates at Cameron’s house, he begins to discover that nothing is as it seems, and he may not be out of danger after all. Last Ferry is a tense queer thriller that turns a frisky vacation into a waking nightmare that builds in suspense and dread until its shocking conclusion. THEMES: Drama | Gay | Relationships | Thriller

Emilia is a 30-something bisexual woman who refuses to grow up as her female friends already did. Angélica, one of Emilia’s friends, is getting married. Her other friends, Clara and Renata, seem to have all their lives figured out: amazing jobs, family, and kids, while Emilia teaches acting classes while she awaits her big break. When she is unexpectedly fired, she is forced to take a job working for her best friend Angélica. As Emilia sinks more deeply into a comfortable life, she grows further away from herself. If this isn’t enough to manage, she is also trying to figure out exactly what her relationship with Mariana is. Everything comes to a head at Angélica’s bachelorette party, where a few too many drunken truths are revealed. In Spanish with English subtitles. NO BOX FOR ME: AN INTERSEX STORY DIRECTED BY FLORIANE DEVIGNE (SOUTH AFRICA/FRANCE, 111 MIN)

After qualifying to compete in the 2016 Olympic trials for swimming, Penny Kemp, an intersex teenager, is forced to undergo gender treatment in order to keep her high levels of testosterone at bay. To make matters worse, Penny is ostracized by one of her teammates after beating her out at the commonwealth games. (S)he is a coming-of-age drama that speaks to what it means to be a teenager, what it means to be accepted, and what it means to stand up for who you are in the struggle against prejudice and injustice. No Box For Me reflects on the way intersex people seek to reappropriate their bodies and construct their identities. It questions what our societies are ready to do in the name of social norms and what it means to be a man, a woman or a little of both. These Thems is a seven-episode series following the lives of four queer friends in New York City. After realizing she may be a lesbian, Gretchen befriends non-binary dog walker, Vero, who decides to stop training dogs and start training the straights. Vero takes Gretchen under their wing, introducing her to the queer world and using Gretchen as a guinea pig for Queer Education 101. Vero’s childhood friend, Asher, isn’t out at work and is faced with the decision to out himself when an opportunity for a LGBTQ account pops up. Gretchen’s gay best friend and roommate, Kevin, is looking for love and may have found it in Asher. We follow our four main characters through their lives in New York City as they navigate their world with an intersectional cast of queer and straight characters. The series explores themes of queerness, gender identity, coming out, sexual empowerment, acceptance, and self-expression. The story is told through a comedic lens, with accurate rep resentation: All queer characters are played by LGBTQ+ actors. Behind the camera, the entire filmmaking team was queeridentified and/or POC. Preceded by: In Harold Lloyd’s Butch, after a lousy breakup, a dog named Butch must do his best to reunite Tiff and Gem, even if it means a trip to the vet.
