Peter Lord & Nick Park’s CHICKEN RUN
Steven Spielberg’s SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
Featuring incredible animation and all-star voice talent, Chicken Run is a classic from the creators of Wallace & Gromit! While the chickens on evil Mrs. Tweedy's farm dream of a better life, a clever hen named Ginger is hatching plans to fly the coop! The only problem is chickens can't fly…or can they? Every escape attempt goes fowl until Rocky, a smooth-talking All-American rooster, crash-lands in the coop. It's poultry in motion when Rocky attempts to teach Ginger and her fine feathered friends to fly but, with teamwork, determination and a little bit o' cluck, the fearless flock plots one last daring attempt in a spectacular bid for freedom!
Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) takes his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. Surrounded by the brutal realties of war, while searching for Ryan, each man embarks upon a personal journey and discovers their own strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage. Of course it’s not so much an action movie as it is a moving tribute to the heroes of World War II, with superb direction by Steven Spielberg and one of Tom Hanks’ finest performances.

It's through this latter activity that Thomas meets Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who has some interesting news—none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually 2199, and Thomas is a victim of The Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence that has tapped into people's minds and created the illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy. Morpheus, however, is convinced Thomas is "The One" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and psychological freedom.

Ridley Scott’s BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT Visually spectacular, intensely action-packed and powerfully prophetic since its debut, one of the definitive science fiction films of all-time returns to Retro! In a signature role as 21st-century detective Rick Deckard, Harrison Ford brings his masculine-yet-vulnerable presence to this stylish noir thriller. In a future of high-tech possibility soured by urban and social decay, Deckard hunts for fugitive, murderous replicants and is drawn to a mystery woman whose secrets may undermine his soul.
In this sci-fi cult classic, scientist Zac Hobson awakens to discover that he may be the last man on earth. Homes, highways and entire cities are deserted and empty planes have fallen from the sky. Every living thing has disappeared. He stands on a balcony and grandly addresses an "audience" of cardboard standups (from Queen Elizabeth to Bob Marley), declaring himself "president of this quiet Earth." But for Hobson the ultimate shock comes when he finds that he is not alone. With the addition of a young woman (Alison Routledge) and a Maori trucker (Pete Smith), the apocalypse suddenly becomes very personal.

David Cronenberg’s THE DEAD ZONE (R, 1983, 103 min)
Stephen King’s MISERY (R, 1990, 109 min)
(R, 1982, 117 min)
Naked space vampires return to Retro one more time! From the director of Poltergeist and the writer of Alien comes this batshit-crazy sci-fi horror-adventure. A mission to investigate Halley's Comet discovers an alien spacecraft! After a deadly confrontation, the aliens travel to Earth, where their seductive leader begins to drain the lifeforce of everyone she encounters. Her victims, in turn, continue the cycle, and soon the entire planet is in mortal danger. And when the mission’s sole survivor sets out to destroy her, he comes face to face with the most horrifying being he’s ever known. Starring Patrick Stewart and Steve Railsback.
Based on Stephen King's novel, this was Cronenberg's first foray into mainstream horror filmmaking! One fateful night, Johnny Smith (Christopher Walken) smashed head-on into an enormous truck and was plunged into a deep coma. When he awakens he discovers that all is lost, but he has gained psychic powers that allow him to see visions of the past present and future and is propelled into horrorfilled supernatural experiences.
Geoff Murphy’s THE QUIET EARTH (R, 1985, 91 min)
Not all extra-terrestrials are friendly! Years after a man is kidnapped by aliens, one of the slimy things returns to pay a visit to his wife, impregnating her in a truly disgusting fashion that we can't go into detail about here. But then she gives birth to her husband, a fullgrown man, in a manner as graphic and horrifying as you're imagining. Things then get really weird as the man imbues his son with psychic powers, which he uses to bring his toys to life and murder his classmates. Xtro touches on everything from slasher flicks to zombie movies to Carrie, punctuated by a jaw-dropping scene that makes Alien's chest-burster sequence look like a Disney movie.
After his car crashes in the mountains during a blinding snowstorm, famous novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is "rescued" from a car crash by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates in an Academy Award-winning role), a fan obsessed with the main character in his series of novels. But when Wilkes reads his latest book—and learns he has killed her favorite character—she teaches Sheldon the real meaning of Misery.

The time has come to tell the tale. The four elderly members of the Chowder Society (Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and John Houseman), gather in each other's drawing rooms each winter to sip cognac and spin elaborate ghost stories. The four men also share a dark secret far more unsettling than fiction—a secret which has literally come back to haunt them, as well as their own adult offspring. Each man is visited by a hideous ghost of a young woman (Alice Krige) they murdered 50 years ago.
Gothic tells the story of the night that Mary Shelley (Natasha Richardson) gave birth to the horror classic "Frankenstein." W.S. Van Dyke’s THE THIN MAN
W.S. Van Dyke’s ANOTHER THIN MAN
The best film in the series came first: The Thin Man, a marvelous adaptation of a Dashiell Hammet novel. The movie gods were in a generous mood when they paired William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, the upper-class sophisticates whose sleuthing escapades somehow joined the classic form of the whodunit with the giddy-up of screwball comedy. Among the series' many attributes, one of its most radical notions was the idea that a married couple might find each other delightful and view life as a goofy adventure together.
The third film picks up when the Charles family arrives for a weekend with a Long Island industrialist who fears someone wants to kill him. Sure enough, his fears come true. Nick (William Powell) is among the suspects. Asta scrams with what may be the murder weapon. And Nora (Myrna Loy) has her own ideas about the case and sneaks off to a nightclub to ferret out a clue. "Madam, how long have you been leading this double life?" Nick asks. "Just since we've been married," she replies.

Valley Girl is, like—Omigod!—one of the most tubular teen romantic comedies of the 1980’s. The plot (about the son of an abusive father struggling not to continue the pattern) is just a theme upon which to hang some of Prince's most dazzling songs.

Flashing between the 70s and the 90s, this crazy fun and empowering movie reminds girls and women that it's okay to be different, and testifies to the true power of female friendships. This wistful drama is set in the summer of 1970 and follows the adventures of four 12-year-old girls as they attempt to solve a murder. When not involved with that, the girls have fun, play pranks on the town boys, and talk about their rapidly changing lives and bodies. Starring Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffmann, Ashleigh Aston Moore, Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore, Rosie O'Donnell and Rita Wilson.
Mike Nichols’ POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE (R, 1990, 101 min)
Meryl Streep stars as Suzanne Vale, an up-and-coming star whose career has ground to a halt due to drug addiction. After a stint in rehab, Suzanne ends up with an appointed caretaker: her mother, Doris Mann (Shirley MacLaine). The film was adapted by Carrie Fisher from her own novel, and wrestles with the complicated but loving relationship between an actress and her movie star mother. And because this is a semi-autobiographical portrait of the mother-daughter life of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, you MUST SEE IT.
Emile Ardolino’s SISTER ACT (PG, 1992, 100 min)
Whoopi Goldberg's vegas showgirl turned nun was the greatest thing to happen to church choirs since organs. Academy Award winner Goldberg stars as a sassy lounge singer forced to hide from the mob in the last place anyone would ever look for her—a convent—where her fun-loving attitude turns the nuns' tone-deaf choir into a soulful chorus of swingin' singin' sisters.

JAN 23 Sergio Martino’s TORSO (R, 1973, 93 min)
A towering terror from the end of the ‘70s giallo boom, Torso finds director Sergio Martino (Case of the Scorpion’s Tail) reveling in the genre’s time-honored traditions while also laying groundwork for the modern slasher. It delivers copious violence, sleaze and one of the tensest cat-and-mouse games ever committed to celluloid. A maniac prowls the streets of Perugia, targeting picturesque university students. Alarmed at the plummeting life expectancy of the student body, Jane (Suzy Kendall) and her friends elope to a secluded country villa to discover that, far from having left the terror behind, they've brought it with them!
FEB 20 J. Lee Thompson’s 10 TO MIDNIGHT (R, 1983, 101 min)
Charles Bronson is a rogue cop pursuing a deranged killer in this action-packed suspense thriller. Serving up vigilante justice as only he can, Bronson delivers one of his most riveting performances. Bronson plays Leo Kessler, a cynical Los Angeles cop on the trail of Warren Stacey (Gene Davis), a homicidal maniac who turns rejection from beautiful women into the ultimate revenge. When the legal system sets Stacey free, Kessler plants evidence to put him behind bars for good. But Kessler’s plan backfires, leaving him with only one option: to hunt down Stacey on his own before the crazed killer strikes again!
MAR 20 Menahem Golan’s THE APPLE (PG, 1980, 90 min)
Take a trip back to a time when rock ruled the world, with this mindblowing, magical musical that's a camp lover's delight! Deliciously decadent and exploding with glitter and glam, The Apple is a psychedelic sci-fi feast for the senses! When folk singers Alphie and Bibi enter the World Vision song contest, their wholesome appeal catches the evil eye of music mogul Mr. Boogalow, a Faustian fiend who promises the pair fame and fortune. Seduced by Boogalow's devilish denizens, Bibi surrenders her soul and soon becomes a superstar and a pawn in Boogalow's plot to take over the planet with the power of pop music! Now, Alphie must free Bibi from Boogalow and save the world from rock-and-roll ruin!
APR 17 Walter Hill’s THE DRIVER (PG, 1978, 91 min)
In this haunting action thriller, a man known only as "The Driver" (Ryan O'Neal) gloms a V-8 sedan and proceeds to whip through claustrophobic parking garages, and narrow alleyways, as he demonstrates why he's known as the best getaway driver in the business. He receives word of his jobs from "The Connection" (Ronee Blakely) and gets his alibis from "The Gambler" (Isabelle Adjani). He is followed by a high-strung police detective (Bruce Dern), who wants to nail him. Many spectacular car chases are one of the highlights of this movie, which paradoxically has a quiet, reflective tone. This is Isabelle Adjani's first American film.

WEDNESDAYS / ONCE A MONTH MAY 15 Sergio Corbucci’s THE GREAT SILENCE (1968, 105 min)
On an unforgiving, snow-swept frontier, a group of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, led by the vicious Loco (Klaus Kinski) prey on a band of persecuted outlaws who have taken to the hills. As the price on each head is collected one-by-one, only a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant) stands between the innocent refugees and the greed and corruption that the bounty hunters represent. But, in this harsh, brutal world, the lines between right and wrong aren't always clear and good doesn't always triumph. Featuring superb photography and a haunting score from Ennio Morricone, Corbucci's bleak, brilliant and violent vision of an immoral West is widely considered to be among the very best and most influential Euro-Westerns ever made.
JUN 12 David Durston’s I DRINK YOUR BLOOD (R, 1971, 83 min)
One of the first motion pictures to be rated X for violence, I Drink Your Blood still holds up as one of the most entertaining and wildly demented movies of its kind. Between the bad-taste instincts of exploitation legend Gross and Durston's twisted imagination (rabies, meat pies, LSD, hippie maniacs, construction workers foaming at the mouth!), Blood plays like a double-barreled shotgun blast, a sugar fix for gore freaks. Just when you think Durston can't push the delirium any further, somebody drags a dead goat across the screen...or an old man in long underwear pukes up his dentures while being strangled...or an electric carving knife strays from a side of ham with disastrous results or well, you get the picture.
