LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: As we go to press with this edition of Show Time, we’re in negotiations with the City of Durham regarding the contract under which our non-profit organization, Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc., will continue to operate this historic complex. If you don’t know, the City owns the Carolina Theatre and by contract provides a management fee that subsidizes the basic operations – utilities, essential staff, and basic operations and services – and we cover the rest through revenue received from our films, live events, rental events, concessions, and donations from generous supporters like you. Our tireless efforts reduce the City’s cost to operate the facility, and ensure a thriving, vibrant Carolina Theatre contributing to downtown revitalization. I can’t yet speak to the length of the contract or the detailed terms. But I can tell those of you who care about the Carolina Theatre this much:

• Our non-profit will be operating the Carolina Theatre for many years to come.

• The City of Durham commissioned a report that compared us to other facilities of similar size, and the results of that report were very favorable to the way we run the Carolina Theatre. Their conclusion was that “the theater is well-managed by the right kind of operator.”

Had we said it ourselves, we might have been a bit more poetic. But we couldn’t agree more. Over the past three years, this incredibly dedicated and hard-working team at the Carolina Theatre has helped make us a national model, a standout among venues our size with a star-studded lineup of live performances, unique film programs not seen anywhere else, and outstanding customer service. Our Top 100 ranking among theatres worldwide speaks only to attendance – but I believe that by any measure, we’re one of the best. We have our challenges. When I assumed the position of President/CEO nearly three years ago, I inherited an organization that had lost $100,000 in the prior two years and was falling fast in the wake of new competition and a national economic crisis. We dug in, changed nearly everything we do, and set about on the path to success. Just when we started to feel the changes make an impact, the Theatre was shut down for four months of renovations that, although necessary and welcome, took a major financial toll. We’ll spend a few years working our way out of the deficit that accumulated, but we will do just that. We’re on pace for our best year financially since 2008. Even more importantly, we’re on our way to a new contract with the City of Durham that will enable us to continue serving all of you – the Durham taxpayers, as well as our donors and ticket buyers from throughout North Carolina – the best we know how, for years to come. Warmest Regards,

Bob Nocek President/CEO CTDceo

Why teaming up with local and national arts organizations is a win for fans By Meaghan Mulholland

Whether presenting local alt-pop favorites Delta Rae or a sold-out national touring performance of Portlandia Live, the Carolina Theatre continues to bring an ever-expanding array of entertainment options to the Triangle – and partnerships with other presenters are helping to make this possible. Seeking out and fostering partnerships has been a priority for Bob Nocek since coming on board as the Carolina Theatre’s President and CEO in July 2010. Reaching out to other arts groups in this way will, he believes, not only help the Carolina grow its audience, but add diversity to the ever-expanding line-up of performances he brings to Durham each year. With so many performance venues in the Triangle, it makes sense for organizations to work together, Nocek says. In addition to lessening the financial risks inherent in putting on any show, partnerships also benefit all parties involved – enabling organizations to draw on each other’s unique strengths and resources. One might have a tremendous volunteer network, for example; another great booking contacts; and yet another the particular knowledge and expertise of its staff. “It’s important that we see each other not as competitors, but collaborators,” Nocek adds. William Lewis, Executive Director of the Piedmont Traditional Music Council, or PineCone, agrees. “We are essentially the same market, here in the Triangle,” he says. “We’re all so close. It’s important for local organizations to be able to talk and have open relationships, in part so we don’t cannibalize ourselves.” Director of Duke Performances Aaron Greenwald describes what he sees as a recent increase in openness to collaboration in Durham: “Many of the organizations here have long histories, but there’s relatively new leadership [at places like Duke, Duke Performances, and the Carolina Theatre]. As downtown Durham becomes increasingly vibrant, there seems to be a willingness to cooperate on things that are mutually beneficial to artists, presenters, and the community.”

This year the Carolina Theatre has partnered with several local groups, including Duke Performances, PineCone, Cat’s Cradle, and the NC Comedy Arts Festival, among others, to present shows ranging from local Alt-Pop sensation Delta Rae (with Cat’s Cradle) to Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show (with DPAC). Greenwald says he likes bringing acts to the Carolina Theatre because it’s often the best place for certain kinds of artists to present. “The theatre has an intimacy, a fidelity,” he says, “that we feel will serve these musicians and the audience best.” Recent Carolina Theatre collaborations with Duke Performances include banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck with the Marcus Roberts Trio, Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura, and pianist Richard Smallwood with his band, Vision. The Carolina Theatre’s collaboration with DPAC and the NC Symphony to present trumpeter Chris Botti is another example of a successful recent partnership. In this case, the CT drew upon its long-standing relationship with Botti, who performed there several times in the past; DPAC provided the venue, and the symphony provided a special orchestral accompaniment. It was the first time the three organizations had teamed up to put on such an event. Carolina Theatre supporters should look forward to more exciting group efforts like this in the future. Partnerships aren’t new to PineCone; the independent nonprofit dedicated to preserving, presenting, and promoting the traditional music, dance and other folk performing arts of the Piedmont produces 170 programs per year – including concerts, a radio show, children’s camps, and documentary projects. “We can’t do it all on our own,” says William Lewis. “Everything we do is out in the community, so partnerships are crucial.” With a small office in Raleigh and just two full time staff, PineCone frequently partners with organizations across North Carolina. This year they are working with the Carolina Theatre to present several shows, including ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro in June. Shimabukuro’s music speaks to the significant Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations in North Carolina and the cultural traditions they’ve brought here, Lewis says – enriching the region’s already rich musical heritage, which PineCone works to support. This goal of reflecting the diversity of traditions here corresponds well with the Carolina Theatre’s aim of broadening and enriching its audience by exposing them to an eclectic mix of programs.

…building relationships with other organizations is about more than just business – especially here in the Triangle, a place where teaming up can help boost local businesses, encourage artistic growth, and provide the best programming for a diverse and growing modern audience. Nocek and Lewis connected initially as members of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Presenters Consortium, an organization that works to foster collaborative booking and routing of artists within the state. Working together to coordinate performances helps not only the booking venues but the touring artists as well, making it easier to arrange shows in proximity. In addition to fostering these local collaborations, Nocek has become more aggressive perusing top tier national concert promoters. “As a thousand-seat venue, we’re not always a first priority for the larger, national concert promoters,” he says. “We work very hard to get them in the door, throwing our full marketing and promotional weight behind any partnered show-something many venues choose not do.” Recent national-level partnerships include comedian Adam Carolla (co-presented with Live Nation Comedy) and the

18

wildly popular tour of Portlandia Live (co-presented with AEG Live and Outback Concerts). While the benefits of these collaborations might seem obvious, success or failure often depends on the human element. “It often boils down to personalities,” Lewis says. “Bob has been a great advocate for brainstorming and reaching out. He’s a visionary type of guy, very open and receptive.” Nocek explains that for the Carolina Theatre, building relationships with other organizations is about more than just business – especially here in the Triangle, a place where teaming up can help boost local businesses, encourage artistic growth, and provide the best programming for a diverse and growing modern audience. “It’s about working with friends,” Nocek says. “We are all in this together.”

It’s astounding how one moment

can change everything. When comedian Tig Notaro gave her most memorable stand-up performance, she was convinced she might be at the end of her career, not a new beginning. “I thought my life was ending. Why would this not be my last time performing,” Notaro said of her memorable set at Los Angeles comedy club Largo in August of 2012. She revealed to the audience that she had breast cancer. “It’s astounding how one moment can change everything.” Earlier in 2012, Notaro, who will perform at the Carolina Theatre on May 4, was ravaged by a serious intestinal disorder, lost her mother in a freak accident and had a long-term relationship end. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in July, just prior to her set at Largo. Notaro’s emotional performance at the L.A. club connected with the audience, including comedian Louis

You had an often difficult, yet very successful 2012. Can you put into context how your life has changed? “It was basically a four-month nightmare. Each thing that happened to benefit me was a whole new positive and amazing experience, but they didn’t take away from the nightmare. I’m learning that the worse things get for me, the happier and freer I am.”

When did you decide that you would divulge your diagnosis in your standup? Have you regretted doing it since? “I have zero regrets. When Louis C.K. called and said he wanted to release the recording from Largo, I just laughed… My only regret is that I didn’t release it sooner. In no way could I have known how life would change and how that show would become monumental in my life.”

What did awareness of your story, and “Live,” do for your career? “It’s easier to get shows. I’ve had more show offers; the money has gone up. I’m working on a book. There’s a documentary film crew following me around constantly to film my life. I sold a project to Showtime. It’s amazing how getting cancer can cause so much work.”

C.K., who tweeted glowingly about her set the next day, helping change Notaro’s life forever. Since then, Notaro released her Largo set “Live” on iTunes after having C.K. prerelease it; appeared on NPR’s This American Life with Ira Glass and worked as a writer on comedian Amy Schumer’s upcoming Comedy Central series. Notaro also had a double mastectomy and was declared in remission, which has given her the opportunity to move forward with the rest of her life. “Being able to be alive is a celebration,” Notaro said from Los Angeles. We asked Tig, short for ‘Mathilde,’ about how her life has changed and what fans can expect when she comes to Durham in May.

How is your health? Do you tire of people asking about it? “It doesn’t bother me. I’m in remission. I’m healthy. I’m happy. There’s no way people wouldn’t ask about it. I understand why they do…I have faith that I’m enough of a comedian that it won’t be the center of attention forever.”

How does your current act differ from “Live?” “The recording was a particular time and place in my life, but I won’t be touring with material from it. I’m still developing new material. It will be a mix of observation and silliness. It’s not going to be a full blown ‘got cancer and my mother died’ show from here on out. It’s more of a return to normal, just with a heightened awareness.”

How have you celebrated both your recovery and your success? “I’m taking advantage of the opportunities that, in the past, I would have steered away from. Taking chances and living my life is a celebration.”
