F
ormer Carolina Theatre employee Peggy Mullen, 79, passed away at her home in Durham this past March. From her tireless work as one of the dedicated volunteers who helped save our Theatre in the 1980s to her decades of distinguished service in our box office through 2013, Peggy was a cherished member of our community who will be deeply missed. “Peggy Mullen’s smile at the Carolina Theatre box office was so much a part of everything good that building has exemplified for so long,” Stephen Barefoot, the Theatre’s managing director from 1985 to 1988, said. “She was a cheerful, dedicated and supportive volunteer and employee for more than 30 years.” Always positive and accepting of change, Peggy saw much of it in her decades at the Carolina Theatre. She was the first part-time box office staffer to work with the Theatre’s new Ticketmaster system in 2010. Though Peggy left the Theatre in 2013, she always wanted to return to work in the building she cherished. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Peggy is survived by her husband, George Thomas “Tommie” Mullen; daughter, Lisa Mullen Hartman and husband Jeff; son, Lowell Mullen and wife April; three grandchildren, a great grandson and three step-grandchildren; brothers, Earl Garrett and wife Debbie of Roxboro, Harry Lee Garrett and wife Patsy of Greenwood, SC; sister-in-law, Celia Payne of Memphis and brother-in-law, Luther Randolph Mullen of Durham and nieces and nephews. e’ve chosen this fall 2015 edition of ShowTime to kickoff what will be a year-long celebration of the 90th Anniversary of the Carolina Theatre, which opened on February 2, 1926. I’m proud of the incredible schedule we have put together to celebrate our historic 90th year. We have assembled a broad range of programs that cover a variety of interests which reflect all corners of our community. We started celebrating early when virtuoso musicians Chick Corea and Béla Fleck launched our Series ’26, whose name is a reference to the year the theatre opened, with an incredible performance in Fletcher Hall on October 4. It was an unexpected thrill for us — and the capacity crowd — when Grammy-winning, Durhambased jazz legend Branford Marsalis joined Chick and Béla on stage for an impromptu performance. As I write this letter, we’re looking forward to hosting the first in a year-long series of opera and ballet broadcasts from the Royal Opera House of London in our cinemas. These phenomenal productions are incredible world-class artistic performances that you won’t see anywhere else in the Triangle. We’re also very pleased to partner with Durham’s beating heart of jazz, the Art of Cool, and the storytelling troupe, the Monti, for several events. Both local organizations have demonstrated that you don’t have to be around for 90 years to present quality arts performances that are beloved by the community. The centerpiece event of our 90th Anniversary is Kristin Chenoweth’s performance on January 30. A talented Emmy and Tony

Award-winning actress and singer, Kristin is adored from Broadway to Hollywood. She’s a great fit for our special celebration. I’m particularly looking forward to our 90th Anniversary Party on February 6. With plenty of food, drink and friends, this special night will provide an evening dedicated to celebrating our theatre’s 90th year. Tickets are available as part of the Kristin Chenoweth 90th Anniversary Celebration Concert package at the Carolina Theatre Box Office and on Ticketmaster.com Lastly, our free block party in the fall of 2016 will allow the entire community to tour the Carolina Theatre, experience some music and be a part of our milestone anniversary. Through the end of this year into 2016, I’ll be working with our 90th Anniversary committee to roll out additional events. I’m constantly reminded by people how important the Carolina Theatre is to them. Folks often share the stories of their first show, the last one they’ve seen, or the next one they will be attending. I’m honored to be a part of keeping the legacy of our venue alive so that future Durham residents can share similar stories. HEADLINES INTERESTING NEWS & EXCITING HAPPENINGS FROM THE CAROLINA THEATRE Ben’s Here, Did That The Carolina Theatre named cellist Ben Sollee as its Musician-In-Residence for 2015-2016. This new, annual program is designed to promote collaboration with the community of performing artists and organizations in Durham and the surrounding Triangle area. Future musicians will be selected through a yearly application process. Sollee is a singer-songwriter and composer known for his innovative playing style, genre-bending songwriting, electrifying performances and political and environmental activism. As part of his residency at the Carolina Theatre, Sollee will participate in a series of public and private events during the year. The first such event was a hike-in concert performance given by Sollee on the trails of the West Point on the Eno city park on September 12. Dear John Singer-songwriter, author and Durham resident John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats is one of the world’s most creative and respected living artists. Much to our delight, Darnielle absolutely loves his hometown’s historic theatre. In April’s Rolling Stone feature story about his most recent album, Beat The Champ, Darnielle professed his love for Durham and the Carolina Theatre: “It’s probably my favorite place on the planet,” Darnielle said of the Theatre. “Built in 1926. They have a monthly horror festival that I’m a big supporter of called Retrofantasma. They also have one of the biggest North American documentary film festivals, Full Frame, and an annual horror festival called Nevermore.” That’s amazing praise. We’re blushing (as much as an 89-year-old gal can blush). We’re also incredibly proud to be a longstanding part of a growing community that dutifully nurtures and supports the arts so that remarkable artists like John Darnielle and others are proud to live here.
You never know when one of Durham’s creative geniuses will show up at the Carolina Theatre. Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis sat in with Dr. John & the Nite Trippers on Oct. 3, even though he wasn’t part of the pre-show billing. A longtime Durham resident who is a legend among musicians, Marsalis came back un-billed the next night to play a few songs with Chick Corea and Béla Fleck, too. Artist and producer Butch Walker praised our venue prior to his show in May; actor John Cusack re-tweeted our enthusiasm for screening the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy in July; musician Jon Batiste favorited our congratulatory message to him on being selected bandleader of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in August and Grammy-winning country music star Lee Ann Womack gushed about our venue, the city and its people.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is an annual international event dedicated to the theatrical exhibition of non-fiction cinema. Each spring Full Frame welcomes filmmakers and film lovers from around the world to historic downtown Durham for a four- day, morning-to-midnight array of more than 100 films as well as discussions, panels and Southern hospitality. Set within a four- block radius, the intimate festival landscape fosters community and conversation between filmmakers, film professionals and the public.

The Durham Symphony is a semi-professional orchestra composed of a combination of volunteers and professionals, all classically trained. Throughout its 37-year history, the Symphony’s mission has been to foster the appreciation of music through the production of high-quality music for and by the residents of Durham and surrounding communities. The Symphony’s programming reflects a commitment to familiar, American and popular music. The organization also seeks to introduce classical orchestral music to young people in the school system through a variety of outreach programs. Traditionally, between October and May, the DSO performs several classical concerts at the Carolina Theatre.

Considered one of the finest professional ensembles in North Carolina and the Southeast today, the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle boasts an elite corps of musicians presenting a well-chosen and unusual repertoire that delights audiences and evokes high praise from critics. The North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble presents performances featuring cutting-edge contemporary choreography and traditional rhythm tap as it was danced in its prime. The company has performed or collaborated with many jazz musicians around the nation and world, has toured internationally and regularly appears at the two largest tap festivals in the United States – the New York City Tap Festival (Tap City) and Chicago Human Rhythm Project.

BUILT TO LAST Carolina Theatre to celebrate its 90th Anniversary in Durham this February.
W
hen the building that houses the Carolina Theatre opened on Feb. 2, 1926 as the Durham Auditorium, it was attached to a structure, now home of the Durham Arts Council, which served as the town’s City Hall. Several other theatres operated nearby to serve the community’s growing appetite for live arts and entertainment. Today, the Carolina is the last remaining of the original downtown theatres. The city-owned building’s bond with Durham remains stronger than ever thanks to the continuing support of a community of arts-loving citizens, many of whom can readily remember various stages of their own lives by recalling the many films, concerts and events they’ve seen inside the majestic venue in the heart of downtown. “You think about all of the other buildings that were here when we opened that aren’t here anymore,” Carolina Theatre President/CEO Bob Nocek said. “This one is around because it was — and is — important to people.”

Theatre board member Sandi Hayes has seen the venue’s evolution from a unique perspective: She returned to Durham two and-a-half years ago after attending Duke as an undergrad. “This isn’t the Durham I left 30 years ago,” said Hayes, who is co-chairing the 90th Anniversary committee with fellow board member Michael Schoenfeld. “It’s clear that today’s Carolina Theatre has an opportunity to be a catalyst for building community. We want to extend its reach beyond the stage and foster a sense of ownership among our audience base. We want people to think of it as ‘my Carolina Theatre.’” In 2016, the historic concert and performing arts venue will celebrate its 90th year in Downtown Durham with a schedule of events that will serve as fodder for attendees to create fond new memories at the Carolina Theatre. Theatre officials have announced a slate of special events to help pay tribute to the building’s nine decades of presenting arts and entertainment
in the city, including a 90th Anniversary Celebration Concert featuring Kristin Chenoweth on January 30; a 90th Anniversary Party on February 6; the recently launched Series ’26 performing arts shows; an Opera and Ballet Film Series broadcasted to the Carolina Cinemas from the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet in London; four sessions with acclaimed Triangle storytelling series The Monti; three live shows in conjunction with Durham’s Art of Cool Project; a custom-brewed 90th Anniversary beer from Durham’s Fullsteam Brewery and a free 90th Anniversary Block Party in the fall of 2016 to cap the year-long celebration. Emmy and Tony award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth is the headliner of the scheduled 90th Anniversary events. Her January 30 performance features simply a vocal performance and a piano accompaniment. “We were looking for a major star who appeals to a broad audience and hasn’t played the market. There aren’t a lot of artists who fit that bill,” Nocek said of Chenoweth. “The intimate nature of her performance is perfect for our setting: an artist with strong traditional influences and a contemporary following is a perfect fit for the Carolina Theatre.” For its year-long 90th Anniversary celebration, the theatre has also partnered with two locallybased organizations, the Monti and the Art of Cool Project, both of which have demonstrated the ability to deliver quality programming to Durham. “It was very important to us to partner with two of the area’s most popular and unique arts organizations to offer new content outside of the national touring artists we’re known for
presenting,” Nocek said. The lineup of 90th Anniversary events also finds the Carolina Theatre celebrating the landmark milestone with the community that has supported the venue for nearly a century. While many of the events are ticketed, the block party will be a way for all citizens to participate in this historic anniversary in Durham. “We want to use the 90th Anniversary in both formal and informal ways to expand our relationships with our long-standing arts partners and build exciting, new diverse partnerships,” Haynes said, adding that the Theatre hopes to announce additional 90th Anniversary events during the year-long celebration. When the Carolina Theatre opened in 1926, Duke University was beginning its second year at its new campus outside Downtown Durham. The Bull City was blossoming thanks to the textile and tobacco industries and the rise of successful businesses such as North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and Mechanics & Farmers Bank along “Black Wall Street” — the city’s Parrish Street. Today, technology and health care companies have helped create economic revitalization and incremental growth in population in Durham, which stretches far past Duke. In recent years, entrepreneur-driven startups, new residential development and a myriad of hotels, restaurants and retail businesses have sprung up downtown just steps away from Parrish Street’s important legacy. And the Carolina Theatre is entrenched at the center of this Downtown Durham renaissance. “We’re certainly thrilled with the growth that we’re seeing around us, and that plays into Order Tickets Now! everything we do,“ Nocek said. “We’re trying to serve the present, and we’re trying to build for a future Durham.” The Carolina Theatre’s future wasn’t always guaranteed, but the historic venue has always had support from dedicated citizens, volunteers and staff members who recognized the theatre’s importance to Downtown Durham. After the building was ticketed for demolition in the late 1970s, Connie and Monty Moses toiled endlessly to organize volunteers and build community support to keep the theatre. The building closed for extensive renovations in 1988 and reopened on Feb. 2, 1994, exactly 68 years after its first day in business. “The Carolina Theatre has a strength that represents Durham well; we’ve been reborn at the same time the city has. It’s not the first time and it probably won’t be the last,” Nocek said. “We’d like to believe that we, in some small way, helped kick-start downtown’s rebirth,” Nocek said. Throughout their intertwined histories, the Carolina Theatre and the City of Durham have weathered many periods of uncertainty and now find themselves in a dynamic present day with a bright future. “The Carolina Theatre has been a lot of different things over the years and it’s had these various lives, but through all of them it’s persevered, even when the future of the building, and the City, was in question,” Nocek said. He is very aware of his organization’s duty to guard the legacy of a building that means so much to its city and its citizens. “As the nonprofit that manages the Theatre, it’s our job to keep the Carolina not only open, but active and presenting a broad range of programming. In recent years, we’ve had more concerts and films than at any period in our 90-year history and doubled our economic impact for the City,” Nocek said. “The Carolina Theatre wouldn’t be celebrating its 90th year without the generous support of the people of Durham and its surrounding communities. We want to preserve our venue for the past, present and future generations. It’s a responsibility that we take very seriously.” 18 T H E C A R O L I N A T H E AT R E

Other 90th Anniversary Events Story Slams with The Monti The Carolina Theatre will sponsor four nights of Story Slams from acclaimed Triangle storytelling series The Monti. HISTORY EXHIBIT: RESTORING HOPE The third and final phase of the Carolina Theatre’s history exhibit will be installed in late 2015. This exhibit will be located on the second floor of the Theatre and will honor the volunteers who worked so diligently to save the Theatre from demolition – and restore it to its former splendor – from the 1970s to the 1990s.
