LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: By now, you’ve probably read about our stellar 2011-12 season, one of the greatest in the Carolina Theatre’s history. We surpassed all ticket sales records, saw major increases in our monthly film attendance, and increased by 25% the number of schoolchildren served by our Arts Discovery educational program. And we did it all despite being closed for more than four months for the long-overdue City of Durham renovations to our facility that was truly in disrepair. We even ranked among the Top 100 theaters worldwide for the first time ever, coming in 88th for the first half of 2012. It’s been a remarkable year for all of us, one that required the shared vision and dedication of my phenomenal staff, and the courage of our Board of Trustees to allow us to change course. We operate in a risky business with no guarantees, but the Board’s faith in our new direction has bolstered our resolve to continue to grow the Carolina Theatre in new and exciting ways. As a supporter of the Carolina Theatre – whether a longstanding Star donor or a first-time ticket buyer – you’re already playing a part in our success. And it’s important for you to know that we have far to go and that we need your help now more than ever. As you may have read in the press, a series of losses that began in 2008, followed by a four-month closure for renovations, have left us in a precarious financial position. We’ve begun to reverse the trend with stronger programming and increased profitability. But we ask you to remember that for all our success, the next few years are about reducing the deficit and getting us back on strong financial footing. So we ask you to consider helping us in any way you can – becoming a Star donor if you haven’t already, or increasing your support if you’ve already chosen to give. Your response to our efforts so far has been overwhelming, and I know that with your continued belief in the all new Carolina Theatre we have a brighter future than ever before. Warmest Regards,

Bob Nocek President/CEO CTDceo

Dave Koz Starts a New Chapter, Comes to the Carolina Theatre for the First Time BY MEAGHAN MULHOLLAND

Dave Koz learned to play the saxophone in early adolescence, at a time when he was struggling to define his identity and find his own voice. “I was able to channel the confusion of that time through my instrument,” he says. “In some ways, the saxophone saved my life.” Though he loved to play, Koz didn’t imagine then that he would go on to have a career as a saxophonist. Even now, after twenty years at the forefront of the contemporary jazz scene, with a dozen successful albums under his belt, he’s still amazed at how things turned out. “I’m so grateful for the journey,” he says. “I never would have thought I’d be making a living doing this. I’ve been very blessed.”

Koz plunged into a professional music career not long after graduating from college, going on tour with vocalist/instrumentalist Bobby Caldwell and pop singer Richard Marx before signing with Capitol Records and releasing a self-titled debut album in 1990. More tours and albums followed, along with Grammy awards and chart-topping contemporary jazz hits. But Koz is careful to note that he still considers himself a developing artist, even after such continued success. “I’m still discovering my voice,” he says. “Always working to improve my musicianship. It keeps me hungry.”

This year’s show features an exceptional array of talent including pianist/composer David Benoit, NBC’s “The Voice” season one winner Javier Colon, the inimitable drummer/percussionist/vocalist Sheila E and introducing singer/songwriter Margo Rey. SHEILA E

With a switch to a new label for his latest album, Hello Tomorrow – which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and was named the “Best Smooth Jazz Album of 2010” by iTunes – Koz starts a new chapter in his journey as a musician. The album is about embracing change, he says, and the uncertainty that comes with it. In keeping with the spirit of growth and exploration, he will bring his annual Christmas tour to Durham this winter in his first ever appearance at the Carolina Theatre. Now in its fifteenth year, the Koz Christmas tour features an array of special guests – including acclaimed jazz pianist Dave Benoit, percussionist/vocalist Sheila E, and Javier Colon, winner of the hit show The Voice. Colon sang on Koz’s Saxophonic album years ago,

18

and they’re thrilled to be reunited on stage this Christmas. The tour will also feature Margo Rey, an up-and-coming jazz vocalist who has several adult contemporary hits of her own. Koz says he’s honored to add Durham to the list of cities he visits on the annual tour. “The Carolina has a reputation for diversity, for welcoming different voices, and that’s one of the reasons we chose to put it on this year’s itinerary. Everyone is welcome at our show – you see people on the stage from all walks of life, celebrating the holiday together. Music has the power to unite, and that’s what we’re all about. To be bringing our show to a place like the Carolina, that has such a rich legacy of tolerance, makes me very happy, personally.”

OMORROW “The Carolina has a reputation for diversity, for welcoming different voices, and that’s one of the reasons we chose to put it on this year’s itinerary ” As Koz approaches his fiftieth birthday in March, what new adventure lies on the horizon? The musical journey continues, for one – he’s starting to work on a new album, “toying with a few ideas. One thing I know,” he says, “is that it’s going to be positive. I’m grateful to be touring still, and making records. I’m feeling good these days.”

In addition to recording and performing around the world, Koz hosts a long-running radio show, now in its 18th year and airing in fifty markets. He also serves as global ambassador for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, and has a host of other creative and charitable endeavors – from wine-making to “Dave Koz and Friends at Sea,” which he calls “a floating jazz fest, where everybody gets a backstage pass,” in which 2000 guests will join him and a host of other musicians in sailing the Mediterranean this fall. The cruise is now in its seventh year. With every new undertaking, Koz says he strives to keep things fun and exciting for his fans. “Jazz audiences are wonderfully loyal. They seem to understand what it means to be an artist,” he says, “and are willing to support you, to go with you in new directions.” He looks forward to the next phase of his journey, and whatever direction it may take him. “Even after all this time, I still feel like I’m starting out,” he says, “ and that’s an exciting feeling.”

Together Again, for the First Time:

Nnenna Freelon and John Brown Come Home to Carolina for the Holidays BY MEAGHAN MULHOLLAND

N

nenna Freelon and John Brown are both worldrenowned jazz musicians and long-time Durham residents. They’ve been friends and colleagues for two decades, and in that time they’ve toured together internationally, collaborated on a Grammy-nominated album, even performed for President Obama in Hawaii. But December 21st marks the first time they will join forces for a special holiday show, here at the Carolina Theatre in front of a hometown crowd.

Recording and performing new arrangements of well-known holiday songs has its challenges, Freelon says: audiences expect to hear certain familiar tunes, but at the same time the performers want to keep things fun, fresh and interesting. This album and show gets it right, she says. “These are new takes on beloved, favorite songs. Big Band is such a wonderful, rich sound. The energy is really fun, and there are moments of beautiful spiritual sentiment as well.”

“We’re both traveling so often, off touring in different places,” says Freelon, a six-time Grammy nominee called “the international voice of jazz,” who has sung with artists like Herbie Hancock and Aretha Franklin, among many others. “I don’t get to play locally often, so this show is a thrill for me. I’m thrilled to greet the people I love, in the town that I love, under this special umbrella of the holidays.”

The Christmas Show at the Carolina Theatre will be a great way to get in the spirit of the season, and also a chance to catch these two phenomenal talents in a rare local performance together. Though their careers take them around the world, both Brown and Freelon are glad to call Durham home. Both praise the community for its diversity, its creative energy and its ongoing support of the arts.

The Christmas Show will feature Freelon on vocals and John Brown on bass and leading his full big band, the John Brown Jazz Orchestra, in all-new arrangements of holiday classics. A studio album of these Christmas songs will also be available at the show – recorded over the summer at a studio in Kernersville, the same featured in the documentary One Night in Kernersville, about a John Brown Big Band recording session, which won the Jury Award for Best Short at the 2011 Full Frame Festival.

“The culture here is unique,” says Brown. “It’s a great, eclectic city, rich with culture and life, that attracts people who appreciate and love the arts. It’s just a wonderful place to live.” A native of Fayetteville, graduate of UNC Greensboro’s School of Music and UNC Chapel Hill School of Law, Brown is currently an Associate Professor of Music and Director of the Jazz Program at Duke. He has recorded more than 20 studio albums, performed at venues like Carnegie Hall and

Brown is also a composer, arranger, producer, actor, member of several charity boards, and founder of the Performing Arts Coalition – a non-profit organization that supports arts education. He is at work on a new film about an autistic man whose main dream is to sing, Tommy: The Dream I Keep Inside Me. Freelon was born in Boston, but came to North Carolina after college and stayed to raise her family here. “I signed to Columbia records with a Durham address, and I still have a Durham address,” she says. “This is

where I came of age as an artist. People who saw me perform back in the 80’s, at places like the CenterFest Arts Festival and Apple Chill, have been here and watched me evolve and grow. It’s an honor to live in the place that gave you wings.” Brown and Freelon hope to establish an annual tradition with the Christmas Show, and to be able to celebrate the holidays with a hometown crowd in years to come. “It’s an honor to be able to perform at the Carolina Theatre, a place with such an important history in this community,” Brown says. “They have been so supportive of us. It’s just another testament to how Durham looks after its own, and supports the people who live here.”

Elie Wiesel, Jon Meacham and Jodi Kantor are just a few of the notable figures who will appear live via satellite at the Carolina Theatre this fall, as part of the exciting new series “Live from the 92nd Street Y.” Selections from the New York City institution’s renowned interview and lecture series are broadcast live each year to select locations, and now Triangle residents will be able to participate in these extraordinary events. During the broadcasts, audience members will be able to watch and participate in real time, with the chance to ask questions of hosts and panelists in New York. “Our goal in bringing this series to the Carolina Theatre is to continue to provide the broadest range of programming, and to keep things interesting,” says Carolina Theatre President/CEO Bob Nocek. “Durham is such a smart, inquisitive town; we wanted to offer people a chance to see and hear something they wouldn’t be able to otherwise. We’re excited to be the first venue in the Triangle to offer this special programming, and we think there will be a lot of demand for it.”

Sponsored by Duke University and The Durham Arts Council, the series will run through the Fall to May 2013, featuring about a dozen interviews on topics ranging from global affairs to science, art and history. The fall schedule includes a tribute to Julia Child, a lecture about Thomas Jefferson, and interviews with writer Anna Quindlen, Elie Wiesel, and more. A full schedule and tickets can be found on the Carolina Theatre’s website. The 92nd Street Y’s live-via-satellite series launched to just a handful of remote locations, but today broadcasts to more than 150 sites across North America. Says Jessica Schneider, their Director of Programming and Outreach for New Media, the decision to add remote venues came from a desire to expand the organization’s mission of community building. “We had all these amazing speakers, and kept hearing how people wished they could get such great people to come to their communities. It seemed like a simple way to use technology to bring the events to places that might not otherwise get to experience them.” In this spirit of community and inclusiveness, each off-site venue is listed at the beginning of the broadcast, with popular events sometimes showing at as many as 40 locations simultaneously.

The Spring 2013 will be announced later this Fall. Visit www.carolinatheatre.org/92Y for more.

The Carolina Theatre premiered its first broadcast – a conversation between Madeline Albright and Christiane Amanpour – at a private donor recognition gala in May, to great response. “It really reinforces how small the world is now,” says Nocek. “That people in Durham can sit in a theatre and participate in a live event in New York, in real time.” Tickets will be extremely reasonable, he says – costing five to ten times less than they would be to see the same speakers in person. “Twenty or thirty years ago, people could have only imagined this,” he says, “and the fact that we can not only offer it as a reality, but also at a reasonable price, is pretty amazing.”

Jim Carl’s

My Take A personal take from Carolina Theatre Senior Director and film programmer Jim Carl on moments in his life and the films that were there with him Find more at carolinatheatre.org/blog

JIM’S 10 FAVORITE AMERICAN MOVIES FROM THE 1980s Paring down this list to ten measly titles was pure unadulterated hell. Some other time, Back to the Future. Goodbye, Raiders of the Lost Ark. After an exhausting round of cuts while watching Rocky III and The Blues Brothers (whilst working from home on a Monday, I’m only saying) – I managed to whittle down my original list to the 10 movies you see below. Are these 10 finalists truly masterpieces? Absolutely, I assure you, especially if you’re the kind of person who works in a place that has lockers. I tried to pick 10 films that bring me happiness, and not 10 films that make me look clever, which I am not, you can ask anybody, particularly anybody who works in a place where they keep their valuables in a locker. In some cases, my memory of a particular film-watching experience is better than the film itself. I mean, how could I forget that time a half-dozen of my fraternity brothers and I ditched Dr. Van Martin’s chemistry class, crammed into my room and watched Highlander three times in a row, then afterwards ran across campus while swinging wooden swords over our heads, and screaming at the top of our lungs, “There can be only one!” If done correctly, this can be quite effective, especially as the girl’s lacrosse team tries to run away from you. It was a grand time, no matter that I can’t watch the movie nowadays without subconsciously rubbing the 2-inch scar over my right kneecap where some sweat-drenched uberfeminist jabbed me with the metal head of her

32

lacrosse stick after I tripped over that stupid water sprinkler near the Godfather’s Pizza on Mason Avenue. Word of advice: Never take a wooden sword into battle against an Amazonian warrioress-in-training who’s carrying a 2 ½ ft. stick used for retrieving small deerskin balls, especially one who doesn’t appreciate your (totally non-sexual) advances toward with her while holding wood in your hand. Why aren’t important films such as Born on the Fourth of July, The Trip to Bountiful, and Tess, among others, on this list, you ask? I pause, thinking about these movies. And about meeting my deadline. And lacrosse. And Mr. T in Rocky III. Whatever. I can tell you right now that their absence doesn’t mean I don’t think they’re important films. They are. They’re important pretentious films. Especially since Tess totally screwed The Empire Strikes Back out of a Best Picture Academy Award nomination in 1980. Paring down this list meant I had to trust my memory rather than my brain. (That sentence made a whole lot more sense when it first popped into my mind.) If your favorite film from the 1980s doesn’t appear on the list, well, have a shower, take a quick nap, sip some Starbucks, and get dressed for the evening, because you’re gonna have to drive to some far-off place like Montauk, Long Island or Colorado City, Texas before finding someone who cares about The Trip to Bountiful. Because God knows I don’t.

ORDINARY PEOPLE (1980) Without a doubt, this is my favorite movie of all-time. This spawned an entire sub-genre of movies about whiny adolescents suffering from pedestrian, over-diagnosed American psychological conditions, but none of those films featured Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Mary Tyler Moore’s character reminds me a little bit of my mother. (Not that I’ve given it much thought, really.) A lot of people have poohpoohed this movie over the years because it beat Raging Bull for the 1980 Best Picture Oscar. What a bunch of sore losers. I mean, The Empire Strikes Back wasn’t nominated for Best Picture that same year either, and you don’t see me ranting and demanding a recount and everything, do you? The 1980 Oscars were sorta like Florida during an election year. Which leads me into...

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) “No, I am your father.” With that single line, Generation X experienced the greatest movie plot twist of its age. We were forced to wait a whole three years until Return of the Jedi, and during that long haul no movie was ever as hotly-discussed, re-enacted, or scrutinized as this one, in a heartbreakingly middle school-aged kind of way. Did I mention Empire wasn’t even nominated for Best Picture? Know what was? Tess. Does anybody even remember Tess? Admit it, you Google-searched it when I mentioned it earlier, didn’t you? What a world we live in. Cheater.

APARTMENT ZERO (1989)

PRIVATE BENJAMIN (1980)

I saw this on VHS years after its release. It’s the story of an Englishman (and all-around movie buff) living in Argentina who begins to suspect that his roommate may be a former mercenary-turned-serial killer. That’s the hook that pulls you in, but the actual story is about something much, much darker and complex. I must tread very, very carefully as I explain this next part. Years later, I had a roommate whose background closely resembled Hart Bochner’s character; the former mercenary in this film. I appreciate some of the tiniest details in Apartment Zero that fly over almost every one else’s heads, if only because I’ve lived with an honestto-God member of Special Operations Command. It’s a rare occurrence that something enters their heads that doesn’t come out of their mouths, which is amusing for about three minutes and then becomes annoying. They’re the only people I’ve met who’ve had to make more apologies than I have. Anyways, the movie’s pretty much authentic. If I were you, I wouldn’t expect this scenario to have a happy ending.

ALIENS (1986) “Get away from her...you bitch!” It was as if the entire feminist movement of the 70s gathered together on-screen, turned toward the audience, and roared. Women cheered as the men laughed nervously in the dark. We knew something in the zeitgeist had...shifted, but we weren’t sure what. If you attended movies during this time period, you know what I’m talking about. Until Aliens, I’m not sure that most studio heads realized that women even watched action movies. Plus, Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley was a total bad-ass. I once named a cat after her. HIGHLANDER (1986)

EVIL UNDER THE SUN (1982) If you’re going to watch labyrinthine murder-mysteries with friends, take my advice: Only invite people who are dumber than you. Sometimes, plot is everything. And Agatha Christie wrote some of the greatest humdingers of all time, including this one. This is one of those whodunits I enjoy inflicting on friends and co-workers (and sometimes the drunks at my local dive bar), especially when they want to watch something else, because I can sit there and feel all smug in the knowledge that I know the ending and they don’t. About every five minutes, I love pausing the movie and asking, “So, who do you think did it?” And because no one in all these years has ever, ever gotten it right, you just know my demeanor while watching this movie is nothing short of smashing.

9 TO 5 (1980)

PRIVATE BENJAMIN (1980) Watch the scene where a mud-splattered Goldie Hawn confronts her overbearing father and has to decide whether or not to stay in the Army. I never understood the term, character arc, until I saw this movie. Plus, I love military marches and Benjamin has one of the best I’ve ever heard. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but I once recorded the soundtrack onto a Memorex cassette

34

tape and turned it into my own personal theme music. I strolled through the forest for hours, practicing my tracking skills (See Hopscotch below) whilst wearing my Walkman, getting my James Bond on, and imagining that Darth Vader and Michael Meyers were lurking just right around that outcropping of rock, which isn’t something you just stumble across in West Texas, but there you are. Surprisingly, I was never able to convince any of my friends to meet me in the woods and go for the Big Win. Yes, here’s yet another movie that wasn’t nominated for Best Picture in 1980 because of Tess. Pretentious snobs.

GHOST STORY (1981) At the time, this had the single most-explicit all-out sex scene I’d ever seen in a legitimate theatre. For that reason alone, it deserves a slot on this list. The scene happens at the 42-minute mark in the movie. I know this because I wore out a VHS copy of the film. Hey, I’m not grilling you about your sexual predilections; I can barely keep track of my own. There’s no point in me getting judgey on you because we’re all friends here, and especially after that whole Highlander-lacrosse debacle, Lord knows I’m lucky to bend my knee at all, right? Stupid water sprinkler. Anyways, I got caught describing some of the juicier bits from this horror movie to the guys in my 7th grade Arts class and got sent to “The Office.” (I never heard it called anything else, just “The Office.”) I don’t think I ever truly embarrassed my mother more than I did that afternoon, especially after I tattled and told Principal Barnes that she was the one who took me to see this porno epic in the first place. Hard to imagine why I thought the Jarretts were a normal family in Ordinary People.

9 TO 5 (1980) This is the only time in this entire article that I’m gonna say this: Dolly Parton, Dolly Parton, Dolly Parton. Excuse me for a moment. I have to take deep breaths.

HOPSCOTCH (1980) Walter Matthau plays a retired CIA agent who writes a tell-all book and finds himself pursued by his former employers. When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to become Matthau’s character, Miles Kendig. While other kids in the 1980s were reciting lines of dialogue from Star Wars and E.T., I usually found myself alone in the creepy black forest near my grandparent’s house in West Texas, pretending that I was an evil mastermind (a trait which has served me well in later years), and practicing my tracking skills because, you know, those might someday actually come in handy (See Private Benjamin to the left.) To this day whenever I’m in a restaurant or a casino, I still sit at a table where I can observe every entry point into the room. And because it feels cool.

HIGHLANDER (1986) I’ve already covered this. You better not just be already skimming to the bottom of this article.

RETROFANTASMA FILM & RETROFANTASMA CLASSICS SERIES

Retrofantasma Film Series: Admit it, you like being scared on purpose. Simply put, Retrofantasma is a monthly double feature of the greatest scary – and fun – movies ever made. Retrofantasma Classics Series: A monthly double-feature of genre films from the 1950s through the early 1970s. From the infamous gimmickry of William Castle to the giant bug films of the 1950s, some of these films are considered masterpieces. Others are simply great “bad” movies. festivals.carolinatheatre.org/retrofantasma
