Allen Tate’s annual public education fundraiser hits $1.52 million mark South Charlotte company’s 2014 events bring in $145,000 for local public schools by Josh Whitener josh@thecharlotteweekly.com
The program served as an opportunity for Charlotte Christian students to give back and create a “giving” community within the school, Giller added. “We think it’s important for (the project) to be all ages because we want our youngest students, who are 5 and 6 years old, to have a chance to interact with our oldest students, who are 17 and 18 (years old) because they’re role models for them,” Giller said. “We want to build that community that we’re all here for Christian education together.” Lynn Carlson, a Charlotte Christian parent and volunteer with Together We
Allen Tate Company has spent the last 17 years raising funds to support public schools throughout North and South Carolina. The south Charlotte-based company’s agents and employees recently hit the $1.52 million mark of funds raised for public education throughout the Carolinas through its annual FUNday events, raking in $145,000 from this year’s FUNdays alone. The annual event takes the form of a field day, tailgate picnic, community workday and evening reception, according to a news release from Allen Tate. Agents “pay to play” when they participate in FUNday events, thus generating the funds used to support education. “I am always impressed, but never surprised, by the commitment and generosity of our agents,” Pat Riley, president and chief operating officer of Allen Tate, said in an email. “This past series of FUNday events also demonstrated to me how extremely innovative and resourceful they are. FUNday has become not just a day of play, but a year-round mindset of giving.” This year’s FUNday events, which took place earlier this fall, were held as four separate regional events including an evening reception in Greenville, South Carolina; a red-carpet

Charlotte Christian helps those in need Charlotte Christian students pack backpacks for Title I schools by Courtney Schultz courtney@thecharlotteweekly.com
Charlotte Christian School students found their giving spirits last week through a backpack program with Together We Feed and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Students donated books and small toys and wrote personal letters to fill drawstring backpacks along with food donated by Second Harvest. The students packed a total of 1,265 backpacks,
which will be distributed to five CMS Title I schools in the greater Charlotte area, during a packing event on Friday, Dec. 12. “We recognize that all of our students and we as a community are all very blessed, so we want our students to recognize their blessings and part of the responsibility that comes with that is to give back to those who may not be as fortunate,” Charlotte Christian Head of School Barry Giller said. “This program specifically allows our students to recognize there are families and kids in Charlotte that are in need of basic resources and that’s food included.”

Traditions furniture and design expanding South Charlotte business adds 2,200 square feet of space by Josh Whitener josh@thecharlotteweekly.com
Sharon Garfield was working alone out of the sunroom of her home when she started her interior design business in 1992. Fast-forward nearly 23 years, and Garfield is now the owner of Traditions, a furniture and interior design business located at the Park Road shopping center in south Charlotte. The store has operated out of its 5,500-squarefoot storefront for the past nine years, and recently expanded by adding 2,200 square feet of space and an array of additional products. “I’ve basically gone from a 6-by-12 (-foot) space (in my home) into 7,700 square feet in the Park Road shopping center, which I consider the best shopping center in the city,” Garfield said. “We have a lot of activity, a lot of people coming in and out, hustle and bustle every day.” Traditions offers a plethora of higher-quality, brand-name furniture and accessories, including artwork, lamps, mirrors, chandeliers, fire screens, pillows and more. The company also offers interior design services through four
designers, and also employs a floral designer. “We have four incredible designers on staff, four young women who really do a great job,” Garfield said. “They’ve (done design work) with lake houses, mountain houses – they’re busy girls and have made pretty amazing accomplishments.” The toughest thing about owning a business, Garfield said, has been the unpredictability of the economy in the past years. Therefore, she’s made it her mission to offer quality customer service to draw people into the store and keep repeat customers coming back. “We have a lot of word-of-mouth referrals. Social-mediawise, we do all we can,” Garfield said. “There’s always the fear of what the economy is going to do in the new year, but we keep our name out for the public to know we’re here.” Garfield believes the design staff is what has helped the business not only survive, but to flourish in the midst of tough economic times. She employs designers who are young with the goal of attracting younger customers, a tactic Garfield said has proved very effective in generating new business. “I think our design staff has had a wonderful eye for what people buy,” Garfield

said. “We have a good eye for knowing our market, plus (the designers) brought in a lot of younger (customers) … they know the product that young customers are attracted to, and offer what I hope to be the best customer service we can.” Traditions also offers prices that are lower than the typical retail costs of certain products, with 40 percent off average prices being the typical discount provided to customers, Garfield said. “We offer anything a big, huge furniture store offers, as well as (lower) pricing – our prices are competitive,” Garfield said. Garfield is grateful for the extra 2,200 square feet of space, which previously

gala in Greensboro; a “Mad Men”era cocktail party in Raleigh; and an evening tailgate event at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Allen Tate Company released the total raised from the combined FUNday events in a news release last week. “The money we raise each year at our FUNday fundraiser goes directly to benefit the schools in our local communities – which in turn, makes our region stronger and more desirable,” Stephanie Gossett, FUNday Charlotte event chairperson, said in the release. The Charlotte event alone brought in $75,000, attracting approximately 500 participants. Festivities included silent and live auctions, a 50/50 raffle and wine pull, as well as exclusive, behind-the-scenes tours of the Bank of America Stadium and facilities used by the Carolina Panthers.
Funds raised from FUNday events will benefit local education organizations Communities in Schools, Teach for America, NCBest and MeckEd, an independent nonprofit advocating for quality education for CharlotteMecklenburg Schools. FUNday events are part of the Tate Cares “giving initiative,” which also includes the company’s combined giving campaign held each spring in support of area arts and cultural organizations and United Way agencies. “I am not aware of another group of people this large – outside of our fine educators and professional staff, of course – who consistently dedicate themselves to the wonderful and very important cause of public education,” Riley said in the release. Allen Tate Company, which is headquartered in south Charlotte, is the largest real estate company in the Carolinas with a total of 40 offices in North and South Carolina. Endhaven Elementary School students will have a new place for recreation next year, thanks to a gift from Bissell, Inc. Bissell will donate $25,000 to Endhaven, located at 6815 Endhaven Lane, to update the school’s playground equipment and help provide a safer environment for the school community. Bissell reached out to elementary schools in the 28277 zip code to apply for the gift based on the school’s need, and a committee representing tenants in Ballantyne Corporate Park selected the winner. The school’s PTA created a five-year plan to raise money to purchase new playground equipment, and Endhaven Elementary Principal Brian Slattery said the grant was “perfect timing.” In the last year, seven children in
kindergarten and first grade suffered broken arms due to falling off of the monkey bars on the playground, Slattery said. The unsafe equipment quickly fueled the school’s desire for change. The Bissell gift will reduce a two-year plan to a one-year plan, said Slattery, and the school will install the new equipment over spring break in 2015. The gift also decreased the playground’s cost from about $50,000 to $35,000, as Bissell will help with one-time shipping cost. CMS plans to remove the current equipment, and volunteers will install the new equipment, which also helped decrease expenses. Additionally, the donation will address drainage issues around the school grounds that have been affected by erosion causing unsafe conditions for children. Most important to Slattery, the new playground will help students maintain a (see Endhaven on page 10)

positive, healthy lifestyle. “With our students, it’s a long day, Slattery said. “They need that time to take a break. North Carolina mandates schools provide students 30 minutes of physical activity a day and Slattery feels it’s necessary for students to experience “free play. “Studies have shown that an active child stimulates the brain so when they get back into the classroom, they’re right where the need to be, Slattery said. Larry Huelsman of Principal Financial Group served as a member of the selection committee and feels the playground is a chance to expand recreational activity and connectivity in the Ballantyne community. “Being a former park commissioner and living and playing in Ballantyne, the thing I like is connectivity and giving people ways to recreate, Huelsman said, adding the projected bridge at North Community House Road will help generate more bike and pedestrian traffic to the playground. Huelsman said many area families desire recreational opportunities but have limited options in the area, adding that the new playground will give families an outlet for increased physical activity and communication. “If people are going to live longer, people need to be healthy and they need to have a good sound mind and recreation provides that, Huelsman said. Public funds are not always available to fund recreational projects in the community, Huelsman added, so businesses should often help provide those funds. “It’s the right thing to do to give back to the community that your employees live in and the business world has the money, he said. Huelsman hopes the business community will follow in Bissell’s lead to help connect with the community.

Collinswood wins contest to improve media center by Courtney Schultz courtney@thecharlotteweekly.com
Collinswood Language Academy students needed more middle school and Spanish resources in their media center, and thanks to the Belk Bowl PNC Innovation Lab contest, they won $75,000 to make that happen. “It was an innovation challenge, said Nikita Sanders, community relations specialist. “What we did was an open call to elementary, middle and high schools to submit a video, and say what their media center is in need of. They want a more innovative space. So, show us if the books are outdated, if the scenery is outdated, if the technology is outdated and submit a video as to why they feel they should receive a grant from Belk and Synders-Lane to reinvent their media center. The competition required videos have specific criteria to be considered. Entries must be two to five minutes, show student involvement and show media center needs within the video, such as torn carpet or outdated technology. Belk received about 35 entries and picked three CMS schools for the grant, including Hidden Valley Elementary School and Butler High School along with Collinswood. Giving back to the community is one of Belk’s core values, Sanders said. The North Carolina-based company wanted to start with the Charlotte community and saw a need to bolster media centers in schools, granting the funds with the hope of furthering students’ learning. “The world is moving so fast and technology is such a big need right now, so (we want) to be able to give the students more access to that, Sanders said. “For instance, (the school wants) to give the students access to e-books. You’ll notice there are shelves (in the library) that don’t have any books on them, but if they can go to a computer or an iPad, they can pull up a book. Giving them a warm and inviting space, giving them a space that is large enough to fulfill their needs, those are the big things that we’re looking for. www.thecharlotteweekly.com
When Collinswood students found out about the grant, they decided to take on the challenge. Collinswood’s media center mostly contains kindergarten through fifth grade material without many resources for the middle school grades. “We were a kindergarten through fifth grade school and the (CMS) school board decided we would become a kindergarten through eighth grade school, but the building wasn’t expanded. So I’ve been expanding the (library) collection, but it’s rather crammed. We don’t have the building to house kindergarten-through-eighth-grade (materials), said Melanie Wager, media specialist at Collinswood. “It’s a very good school. We really need to be able to give our students a better media center and give them the Spanish resources that they need. Collinswood, located at 4000 Applegate Road in Charlotte, is a duel-language school that teaches students academics half of the day in Spanish and half in English. Wager said sometimes it’s hard to find the proper Spanish resources for middle school students and hopes the grant will provide more Spanish resources, a subscription to e-books and possibly new furniture for the media center. Collinswood Principal Nicolette Grant said she hopes the grant will help improve the school’s Wi-Fi and possibly expand the space, as well as increase resources. Grant said she’s proud of the students’ commitment to creating the video, and their partnership with digital storytelling company Basic Cable, who assisted the students. “The kids knew there was a problem and learned about this opportunity and took the initiative to come up with ideas together and do the video together, Grant said. “It’s empowering to know that our students can see something, work for something and see the fruits of their labor in the sense that they won. Collinswood students will also attend the Belk Bowl on Dec. 30 at Bank of America Stadium as part of winning the award.

Education CMS identifies person behind Providence High threats by Courtney Schultz courtney@thecharlotteweekly.com
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Police have arrested and charged the person responsible for threats against Providence High School via social media on Dec. 13 and 15. Patrick Philip Brehm, 22, was charged with anonymous or threating letters, mailing or transmitting, according to a statement from Randy Hagler, chief of CMS Police. Authorities announced on Monday they had identified the individual, but were still investigating whether others were involved in the threats made against Providence, as well as threats made against Ardrey Kell High School. Breham posted threats via a social media app, Yik Yak, on Saturday, Dec. 13, with one post that read, “Providence students...enjoy this lovely weekend with your awesome friends and perfect family. Come Monday, you will be repaid for all the pain you have caused me for years,” and another read, “... wait til Monday when I ... blow your brains out of your head ...” CMPD swept the area over the weekend and secured the building on Monday morning. Providence Principal Tracey Harrill sent an email to parents on Sunday, stating students would be “greeted by police and staff members,” and would not congregate in open areas in the school, but in their individual
classrooms. She also wrote there would be increased police presence throughout the school week, but added Providence would operate on a normal schedule. Students said their bags were not checked. More threats came Monday morning, including a post that read, “This is where I become famous,” with an image of a gun and another that read, “The itsty bitsy students came up the water spout down came my bullets and washed them all out.” CMS Police identified the culprit with the help of Yik Yak, based in Atlanta. “As all social app platforms have experienced, the threat of misuse of this nature is often unavoidable, and it’s important that app makers identify and respond to each instance immediately to address these types of posts,” Zachary Nola, communications representative for Yik Yak, said. “In addition to monitoring traffic for misuse and/or harmful posts, Yik Yak makes a point to work with law enforcement and other officials when a post is violent in nature. Whenever possible, Yik Yak works alongside local authorities to help with investigations.” According to a police report from CMPD, the perpetrator who made threats against Ardrey Kell was “an unknown person from Colorado,” but no arrest has been made. CMS Police will maintain increased presence through the end of the week and will investigate other threats made against other schools.
Charlotte Christian (continued from page 1)
Feed, introduced the drive to school administration and they were immediately receptive of the idea. Giller added that Charlotte Christian was interested in finding a local approach to giving, rather than the international projects of years past. The drive is the largest schoolwide projected the school has executed for the greater Charlotte community. Together We Feed is a program within Second Harvest that partners with CMS to determine hunger at each school with the help of nurses and social workers. The program uses mobile pantries, backpacks and emergency pantries in schools and in classrooms to alleviate hunger for Mecklenburg children. “A large part of what Together We Feed is built to do is to bring hope to hungry children,” said Carlson. “Bringing hope to these children we believe is what really gives children what they need to break out of poverty and be successful and have a chance to join Charlotte and be a part of Charlotte in a way that they’re adding to our city and make our city better, stronger.” Together We Feed seeks to include nonhunger children in all its volunteer opportunities with the hope to inspire children to head the movement to help alleviate hunger in the future. Carlson felt the students of Charlotte
Christian could help grow the “army of love” and become a part of a lasting solution to end childhood hunger. “It’s critical for children in the city and Mecklenburg County to get involved and help other children within the county and city,” David Brown, food sourcing director for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, said. “One out of four children that live in Mecklenburg County are what we called ‘at risk of hunger’ and what that means is that a child could go 24 hours without any access to food or not having anything to eat for 24 hours. That’s why it’s not only critical during this time, but throughout the year.” Brown added that adolescents’ enthusiasm to help grows once they’re aware of the problem, encouraging future actions to aid. “I think it’s hard to expect our children to be something if they don’t know what their community looks like,” Carlson said. “I think this is a great way for (Charlotte Christian) students to understand not just the children that come to our school, but that there is need in our community – there’s need globally, but there is also need locally.” Carlson feels the program teaches children to take a part in the community and learn what community means and how they can use their individual talents to improve the community. Real Help
FINAL WEEKS
for Real Living
The day I sang the “Mighty Mouse song in church by Rev. Tony Marciano news@thecharlotteweekly.com
When I was a young pastor, I led the congregational singing of hymns and preached the sermons. My father used to say that my preaching was really Rev. Tony good, but Marciano my singing was really bad. One day he looked at me and told me to shut off the microphone when I lead the hymns, and I think there was a compliment in that sentence. Today I sit in the pew and listen to some good preaching. There is always a call to action – some may ask you to get out of the pew and make a difference in the world. That’s where I almost got in trouble at church. The pastor preached a sermon about being salt and light in the world. He challenged us to touch the hearts and lives of others who need our helping hand. It was a moving sermon. While my ministry at Charlotte Rescue Mission is all consuming, something said I needed to be part of what God was asking this congregation to do. He had us all stand up as he moved into his “call to action. He challenged us to touch the hearts and lives of others. As he finished making the final appeal, he asked us to raise our hand if we felt the Lord calling us to be part of this special ministry. He turned to step away from the podium and immediately the band started playing a rousing chorus of “All to Jesus I surrender. I found myself standing with my hand held high in the air. Then it happened. In the back of my mind, I wasn’t singing the same song as the band. They were different words – very different words, and a very different tune. Instead, I found myself singing the “Mighty Mouse song. www.thecharlotteweekly.com
I could hear the words as clearly as when I watched that TV show as a kid. “Here I come to save the day. I could feel those words echoing through the back of my head. In a moment I realized why my hand was raised. What the church was about to do would positively impact people in crisis. It would bring them help and hope. But those words, “Here I come to save the day, clued me in that I was about to do this in my power and my strength. It was about me and my need to fix broken, hurting people. I lowered my hand. I could not say, “Yes to this invitation. This wasn’t about serving them, this was about me and my need to feel good about helping others. For whatever good I was about to accomplish would sit in the shadow of the motivation of my heart. I knew there would be another project for which I could serve. This one required me to step aside and not let my needs trump the greater good God wanted to accomplish. I lowered my hand. After lowering it, I prayed for the congregation. There were other people standing that perhaps had not yet raised their hand. I believed it was them and not me that God called to be involved in this project. I prayed that God would move on their heart and life and let them see the hand of God upon them. They would be hidden behind the cross as they served in Jesus’ name. Since that time, there were other opportunities I had to sing the “Mighty Mouse song. I’ve realized that my good intentions were being driven by my need to come across as helpful and nice. As I paused, I realized it may not have been in the best interest of the individual and their becoming all God created them to be. I’ve learned to back off. I’ll be back soon. Until then, live well my friend. Rev. Tony Marciano is the executive director of the Charlotte Rescue Mission. He is available to speak to your group. Nick Linder, Providence Day
Runner of the Year:
Coach of the Year:
Jack Paddison, Providence Day
Ben Hovis, Providence Day
Jack Ratterree, Charlotte Latin
Logan Sutter, Providence
The South Meck freshman had a smashing debut, running 16:23 to finish just nine seconds off the pace and finish third in the So. Meck 8 conference meet. He didn’t stop there, as Ferguson tied for seventh in the region (16:15) and placed 33rd in the state (16:50.73).
Linder was a key cog in the Chargers machine that continues to turn out conference and state champions. The senior finished second in the CISAA conference meet (15:25), second in the state meet (15:50.61) and ran one of the five fastest times of any boy – public or private school – in the state.
Ratterree was the Hawks’ frontrunner all year, leading them to a second-place conference finish and a fifthplace showing at the state meet. The junior ran 16:02 at the CISAA meet to take third and was seventh in the state (16:3.38). Ratterree will be a state title contender next year.
Sutter had a hand in keeping the Providence tradition alive as his ninth-place finish at the Western Regional (16:19) helped guide the Panthers to the team title. The junior was also fifth in the So. Meck 8 conference meet (16:30) and 45th in the state (17:02.14).

Tanner Sutter, Providence

The Mustang junior had an impressive season leading his team to a conference title and third-place regional finish. Smith was second in the conference meet (17:15) and third in the region (16:05) – where he finished two seconds off the pace – and was 28th in the state (16:47.02).
Paddison teamed with Linder to form a dynamic duo and also ran one of the five-fastest times in the state. Paddison backed up his CISAA conference title (15:19) with a state championship (15:48.14) making him the latest on a long list of Charger standouts.
The Southwestern 4A champion ran 17:13 at the Myers Park home course to pace the Mustangs to the team title. The senior also was fourth in the region (16:12) and placed in the top 40 in the state (16:55.36).

Jack Attack by Hannah Chronis hannah@thecharlotteweekly.com
Providence Day senior Jack Paddison had no idea what he was getting into when he decided to go out for the cross-country team at the end of his eighth grade year. “One of my friends who just moved to Providence Day from Charlotte Christian that year was Nick Linder,” Paddison said. “He told me to run cross-country and at the end of July before freshman year, he asked me why I hadn’t been coming to practice. ‘I had no idea we had practice,’ I told him.” Little did Paddison know he’d soon become an integral part of a storied Charger cross-country program that’s now known as one of the most competitive in the country. Over the course of his freshman year, running behind guys like Linder and Charger legend Ben Huffman, who’s now running at Harvard, Paddison cracked the Top Seven in his first race and managed to shave two minutes off of his time by the time the season ended. At the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 3A state meet that year, Paddison ran in 16 minutes, 28 seconds to finish in 13th place and help the Chargers win the state championship. Since his inaugural season, Paddison www.thecharlotteweekly.com
has improved by leaps and bounds. As a sophomore, his time of 16:16 put him in eighth place at the state meet; as a junior, he ran 15:45 to finish in fourth. This season, Paddison went out in style, running in 15:48 to win the state championship. Each year, Paddison has helped the Chargers win the title as they’ve captured the last five consecutive state championships and eight of the last 10. With one of the most acclaimed Hannah Chronis/ SCW photo
Charger careers behind him, Paddison is now the 2014 South Charlotte Weekly Cross-Country Runner of the Year. “By the time this season started, I felt pretty strong and confident and knew I was in good shape,” Paddison said. “It was more about getting into shape mentally. Going into the season, the goal was always to win states as a team. I didn’t want to go three years and then fall short for my senior season.” After Linder won the meet last season, and Huffman captured the title in 2012, Paddison was used to running behind a Charger teammate. And when the season started, he was well aware that this year would come down to how well he ran against Linder – one of his best friends. Though the pressure was enough to get the best of any runner, Paddison decided to cancel out the exterior noise and go into the season doing what he does best – running. “Going into the races this season, I’ve never been more relaxed,” he said. “It was interesting. I thought I would work myself up but I tried to stay as calm as possible. It sounds crazy, but it took me three years and most of this season to learn that the best thing I could do
during a race was just to run.” “Freshman year, that’s exactly what I did. Sophomore year was my worst season. I barely improved and didn’t have strong races because I started thinking too much. I started wearing a watch and was focused on all the small things instead of just reading my body. I learned from my mistakes this year.” Getting back to the basics worked as Paddison edged Linder by just under two seconds to win the state title – something he would’ve deemed impossible when he started running just four years ago. “I never wanted to beat Nick because he’s my friend,” Paddison said. “I didn’t want to go out there and say, ‘Oh it’s time to beat Nick.’ I wanted to go out there and say, ‘I can accomplish this so I’m going to do it.’ It’s not fun to beat any teammate, especially one of your best friends, but there are no hard feelings there. We’re really supportive.” After capping off a wildly successful cross-country career, Paddison is now focused on lacrosse – his spring sport – and finalizing college selections. He’s receiving interest to run at North Carolina and Brown but as a devoted student in the classroom, has a plethora of options for academics. But wherever Paddison’s path takes him, his legacy at Providence Day will go down in history.
