SUMMER (continued from page 1A)

Rally behind Independence High School students As August approaches, it's not uncommon for community groups and churches to hold back-to-school events. The Town of Mint Hill holds one of note, because it's a huge pep rally with Independence High School faculty, staff, boosters, marching band, athletes and families. Have to respect that level of community pride. The free event takes place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at Mint Hill Town Hall. It includes bounce houses, cornhole and giant Jenga.

Take dad to a car show Looking for something to do with dad on Father's Day? Take him to Jekyll & Hyde Taphouse & Grill for the third annual Father's Day Car Show. The event takes place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 16.

The show is open to all makes and models with registration proceeds going to help local veterans. After the show, buy him Hyde's Shepherd's Pie or Guinness Glazed Salmon. Come alive for Labor Day Labor Day usually marks the end of summer, but it doesn't have to be a bummer. The Town of Matthews hosts the largest Labor Day celebration in the Charlotte region in the form of Matthews Alive. Thousands of people will flood downtown Aug. 30 to Sept. 2 for amusement rides, carnival games, food, music and people watching. Don't forget the parade on Saturday morning. The four-day event is not only fun, but it also serves as a fundraiser for many of area nonprofits.

Brush up on Matthews history The Matthews Heritage Museum will continue showcasing its latest exhibit, “Tank Town: A Good Place to Live,”

Thursdays to Saturdays through Aug. 17. It features artifacts, photos and stories from a part of Matthews settled by former slaves and freedmen after the Civil War. Related to the exhibit, the museum will lead a PowerPoint presentation at 2 p.m. June 22 at the Matthews Library.

If you're in Pineville this summer you should... Dance in the moonlight Pineville Parks and Recreation presents an opportunity to dance in the moonlight, as well as watch family-friendly movies, through its annual Rock'n & Reel'n series. Watch “A Dog's Way Home” on June 21 and “Mary Poppins Returns” on July 26 with the family. Listen to the likes of Rivermist (June 14), Charlotte Symphony (June 30), New Kids 90s Superfly Tribute (July 5) and Ultimate Aldean with Brandon Davidson (Aug. 16), while dining on food truck cuisine.

Pop bubbles at historic site One of the most popular events at the President James K. Polk State Historic Site has nothing to do with bonnets, muskets or iron skillets, but everything to do with nostalgia. Bubble Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 10. Admission costs $10 per car and includes arts, crafts and games. Proceeds benefit the historic site, which showcases the life and times of the 11th President of the United States.

$ Laugh at misfit fairy-tale characters Eva Montes has built a reputation for directing funny productions through the Pineville Players theater community group. Some of her previous shows include “Waiting for the Fat Lady to Sing,” “Four Weddings and an Elvis” and “Hillbilly Hankerin.'” Her latest show, “Fairy Tale Misfits,” pokes fun at storytime rejects like Sleepless Beauty and Little Red Robin Hood. with opportunities to learn about drop spindles (June 1), cross stitching (June 15), apron-making (June 29), hand-woven baskets (July 13) and cloth wallets (July 27).

To keep your summer barbecue happy and healthy, prepare and clean your area by washing hands, utensils and prep surfaces with soap and water. Rinse fruits and vegetables. Avoid cross-contamination of eggs and raw meat by using separate knives, plates and cutting boards. Cook at the right temperature and use a food thermometer. Use clean utensils when serving. Hot foods should be kept at or above 145 degrees. Cold foods should be below 40 degrees. Food should never be left out for more than one hour if it's hotter than 90 degrees outside. If you're in Union County this summer you should... SUMMER (continued from page 3A)

Enjoy Music on Main Beach tunes and Motown grooves continue to reverberate throughout downtown Monroe thanks to the city's Music on Main concert series. Catch regional touring bands like Radio Revolver (June 27), The Legacy (July 25) and The Catalinas (Aug. 22) while engaging with restaurants and shops in the neighborhood. The Catalinas, a band dating back to 1957, is in the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.

Check out classic cars Downtown Monroe has been a bonafide destination for automotive aficionados since April thanks to the 12th annual Classic Car Cruise In. But you don't have to know how much horsepower comes out of a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro to appreciate beautiful cars. The second Friday of every month takes on a different theme through October, including Mustangs (June 14), motorcycles (July 12) and Jeeps (Aug. 9). Hang out at a treehouse Treehouse Vineyards is known for its wine tastings, vineyard tours and treehouse rentals, but it also has become a destination for live music. The Live at the Vines series is scheduled to host musicians such as RJ Adams, Prodigal Sons and Downtown Abby & The Echoes. In additional to daily wine tastings and tours, guests engage in special events like Latin Night, Sunday Funday and the occasional murder mystery.

Celebrate diversity with food, music The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department showcases the city's diversity with the Multi-Cultural Festival. People of all ages can experience international food, music and crafts. The festival takes place 5 to 8 p.m. July 13 in the Winchester Community Center.

Pay tribute to great bands There's always some uncertainty when you go to that occasional outdoor summer concert whether you're going to like the featured band. The Town of Stallings takes the guesswork out of it with A Tribute to Summer Concert Series. Monthly concerts consist of tribute bands, such as Bless the Rains performing Toto on June 7, Love Gun performing KISS on Aug. 2 and On the Border performing the Eagles on Sept. 6.

Watch a movie under the stars When you're tired of feeling someone's foot tapping the back of your seat every Saturday night at the movie theater, having the space to stretch out and enjoy a movie in the park is such a welcomed change – even if you have to thump off the occasional bug. The Town of Stallings screens “Mary Poppins Returns” on June 21, “Avengers: Infinity War” on July 19 and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” on Aug. 23 at Stallings Municipal Park.

Take your mind to the beach You may be hanging out at Crossing Paths Park, but you'll feel like you're at the beach Aug. 15 when you hear the sounds of

The Catalinas. Known for their hit “Summertime's Callin' Me,” the band brings instant credibility to the Town of Indian Trail's HITs After Six outdoor music series. Bounce on inflatables, paint your face or buy some munchies as you boogie at the beach.

Watch children's classics on the big screen Movie theaters are screening popular children's films for several weeks this summer. Stone Theaters shows films such as “Smallfoot” (June 11 to 13) and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” (July 9 to 11) and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” (Aug. 13 to 15) for $1 at 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Sun Valley 14 in Indian Trail and RedStone 14 in Indian Land.

Have family fun with fireworks You don't have to wait until the Fourth of July for fireworks thanks to Indian Trail Parks and Recreation's Family Fun Day. The town is touting the best fireworks in the state at 9:15 p.m. June 1 at Crook-

ed Creek Park. But even before the fireworks, you can catch amusement rides, vendors and other forms of entertainment, beginning at 2 p.m.

in a bounce house and getting your face painted.

Laugh under the stars You've listened to concerts under the stars. You've watched movies under the stars. You've enjoyed fireworks under the stars. Are the stars beginning to lose their luster? Maybe you need something new to do under the stars … like laugh out loud. Indian Trail Parks and Recreation presents Comedy Under the Stars from 7 to 10 p.m. June 14 at Crossing Paths Park. The free comedy show includes a bounce house and face painting.

Jam at the tracks in Waxhaw Looking for live music in an unforgettable venue? Trek to downtown Waxhaw for the town's Jammin' by the Tracks concert series. Concerts span from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Waxhaw Water Tower. Upcoming performances include Aerial View Band (June 7), Off the Record (July 5), Caroline Keller Band (Aug. 2) and Matt Dylan and The Honky Tonk Outlaws (Sept. 6). The event is enhanced with a beer garden and food trucks.

Watch monsters in the dark You don't have to afraid of the monsters under your bed or in your closet when you go to sleep. And to prove it to you, the Town of Indian Trail is screening the Disney-Pixar film "Monsters Inc." on Aug. 23 at Crooked Creek Park as part of the latest installment of the Friday Flicks series. The movie starts at dusk, but there's plenty to do beginning at 6 p.m., including getting something to eat, playing

Enjoy Wednesdays at the park Wednesdays are especially fun in Waxhaw this summer thanks to the town's Fun Days in the Park series. Paint rocks during Waxhaw Rocks Day on June 12, go on a treasure hunt during Fairy Trail Day on June 19 and capture the flag during Backyard Games on June 26. The town recommends registering for these events in advance. see SUMMER, Page 5A

Drink like Abigail Adams The Museum of the Waxhaws allows patrons to travel back in time during its second annual Colonial Tavern Night. Experience traditional food, beer and wine in an 18th century tavern. Last year's inaugural event featured several people in costume, including an Abigail Adams, and even featured a duel, which beats your run-of-the-mill bar fight. Tickets cost $50.

$ Live free like a pirate You don't have to set sail for the seven seas to find a worthy crew. Look no further than the Museum of the Waxhaws, which hosts its ninth annual Pirate Day festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24. There is no pillaging here, however, as this is a family-friendly event. Still, you can enjoy cannon fire, re-en-

$ Learn about Bible translation JAARS opens up its campus to show the community how it's able to share the Bible with people all over the world, including remote places. JAARS Day serves as an open house, where guests can ride in a helicopter or five-seat plane. Guests can also learn how people get internet in the rainforest and record their voice into the Jesus film. The event takes place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 8.

If you're in Charlotte you should...

Cheer on the Charlotte Knights There are several reasons why the Charlotte Knights are the hottest ticket in minor league baseball. For starters, the Triple-A affiliate plays at BB&T Ballpark, where the Charlotte skyline serves as the perfect backdrop for the stars of tomorrow. Second, promotions like Bark at the Ballpark and Friday Night Fireworks are just plain fun. Other intangibles include affordable tickets, competitive games and summer nights.

$ Watch films made locally If you find yourself mumbling under your breath during a Marvel Studios trailer how Hollywood is devoid of original ideas, then you may want to give the 10th annual Joedance Film Festival a try. Think Sundance, but with this festival, the submissions all have connections to the Carolinas. Named after the late Joe Restaino, a 20-year-old who lost his life to cancer, the event raises money for pediatric cancer research at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital. The event takes place Aug. 1 to 3 at The Charlotte Ballet.

$ Be wowed by Cirque Du Soleil Cirque Du Soleil is known for producing breathtaking shows, and the one coming to the Spectrum Center from July 17 to 21 will be no exception. “Crystal” combines acrobatics with ice skating. The show is about self-discovery, but even if it goes over your head, you'll be entranced by the flips, jumps and other feats of the imagination.

$ Go on a whitewater adventure The U.S. National Whitewater Center can be enjoyed by land and by sea. There's whitewater kayaking, whitewater rafting and

stand-up paddle boarding, as well as trails, climbing, mountain biking, a ropes course and ziplines. Events like the Fourth of July Celebration on July 3 to 4, as well as the River Jam concert series, keep people coming back throughout the summer.

$ Pop-up shop with a can in the hand You love shopping, but your significant other is into craft beer. You want to spent time together, but you're both busy. Rather than write to Dear Abby, just head over to Sycamore Brewing's Front Porch Sundays series. The South End brewery combines more than 60 vendors for pop-up shopping, food trucks, craft beer and music in one event – best of all it's on a Sunday, when you're both off from work.

Be part of the movie Regal Stonecrest at Piper Glen unveiled 4DX technology recently, allowing film-goers to feel totally immersed in blockbuster films. This may come in the form of the seat adjusting to the action on the screen or smelling scents throughout the film. Watch films such as “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “John Wick: Chapter 3-Parbellum,” and “Dark Phoenix.”

Sample some of the region's restaurants The Taste of Charlotte offers a diverse selection of food samples from dozens of restaurants, including Aroma Indian Cuisine, Brazz Carvery & Brazilian Steakhouse, Ri Ra Irish Pub, Caribbean Hut, City BBQ and Mai Thai II. The festival is also a surefire way to tickle all of your senses, with multiple see SUMMER, Page 6A

stages of entertainment, street performers, inflatables, face painting and rock climbing. The event spans 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 7 and 8, as well as 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 9, along six blocks of Tryon Street.

$ Get a season preview of the Carolina Panthers The Carolina Panthers play two preseason games at home. They'll try to stop the young arm of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen on Aug. 16 and the steady arm of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Aug. 29. With Cam Newton still recovering from a shoulder injury, Panthers fans may get a chance to cheer on rookie Will Grier, who played high school football in the region.

$ Hear the pop-pops of the symphony The Charlotte Symphony takes its show on the road to SouthPark Mall's Symphony Park for a series of evenings celebrating pop culture. Upcoming Summer Pops shows include "Star Wars: The Music" on June 19, "Best of Broadway" on June 23 and "Celebrate America! With Fireworks" on July 3. The Broadway show includes hits from “Grease,” “The Sound of Music” and “Wicked.”

$ Jam down by the river The U.S. National Whitewater Center offers a unique backdrop to some of the region's most eclectic collection of bands – the world's largest man-made whitewater river. Listen to bands like Emma's Lounge (June 7), Hannah Wicklund & The Steppin Stones (June 15), Sleepwalkers (June 28), Coddle Creek (June 29) and Jeff Crosby & The Refugees (July 19) while eating, drinking or mingling. The series continues from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through September.

Meet up and coming authors Park Road Books is more than shelves full of books. It's a place where literature comes alive, especially when authors visit to introduce and sign copies of their books. Several author appearances have been booked for June, including Jolandra Houston (“Germy, Germy's Lesson on Germs”) on June 1, Peter Guzzardi (“Emeralds of Oz”) on June 5, Jean Miller (“Confident in the Kitchen”) on June 19.

Watch world-class soccer You don't have to travel to Europe to watch world-class soccer. The International Champions Cup is taking 12 of the best clubs in the world to play 18 matches across Asia, Europe and the United States, including Charlotte. The tournament returns to the Queen City on July 20 at Bank of America Stadium. Charlotte fans are in for

a real treat with Arsenal taking on AS Roma.

$ Engage in some cosplay Comic book fans in the Queen City probably already have June 14 to 16 circled on their calendars. It's when HeroesCon returns to the Charlotte Convention Center. The convention, which dates back to 1982, gives fans a chance to find comics and merchandise, meet and greet artists and just absorb the aura of sweaties. Seminars help fans get closer to the industry with topics like color storytelling, mini-comics, drawing “Star Wars” characters and cosplay 101.

$ See the world through LEGO lens More than half a million LEGOs went into building Discover Place Science's latest exhibit, “Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks.” It's actually a traveling exhibit that showcases 20 replicas of the world's most famous skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building in New York and China’s Shanghai Tower. The exhibit spans June 1 to Sept. 2, with demonstrations and activities held throughout the summer.

$ Learn from top entertainers Kidz Bop, described as the No. 1 kids' artist by Billboard Magazine, will not only perform in Charlotte on Aug. 11, but the group will also offer a workshop in which children become better performers. The workshop will teach performance and auditioning skills, where kids will practice dancing in front of a camera. The workshop takes place 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at DoubleTree Suites By Hilton Hotel Charlotte-SouthPark. The Kidz Bop World Tour 2019 performs at 4 p.m. Aug. 11 at PNC Music Pavilion. Learn about friendship with the children's theater Children's Theatre of Charlotte shares the heartwarming story about the joys of friendship in the Aug. 22 to Sept. 1 production of “A Sick Day for Amos McGee.” Zookeeper Amos McGee spends time with each of his animal friends at the zoo, running races with the tortoise, caring for a particularly shy penguin and reading stories to an owl. When Amos is too sick to visit his zoo friends, the animals know just what to do.

$ Learn about animals on a giant screen Discovery Place Science screens educational films on an IMAX Dome Theatre screen spanning five stories high and 80 feet wide. Viewers are immersed with 15,000 watts of sound and light, creating the effect of being in the film. Some of the films showing this summer take viewers into the habitats of Giant Pandas in China, showcase the life-saving superpowers of dogs and reveal the secrets of nature in our backyards.

$ Listen to music on the terrace The Mo Money Band performs in the interactive space known as The Terrace in Waverly, giving people an additional reason to check out the live-work-play environment. The free Tunes on the Terrance performance takes place 7 to 11 p.m. June 22. Waverly is home to restaurants like Carolina Ale House, Chuy's and Co, as well as shops such as Fab'rik, Ivy & Leo and Meanstream Boutique.

Listen to music on the green Promenade on Providence is home to popular hot spots such as Arooji's Wine Room, Queen City Craft & Gourmet and Sushi 101 and shops such as Jos. A. Bank, Loft and Stein Mart. It's also the place to go from 7 to 10 p.m. Fri-

REGION AROUND THE

If you'll be traveling around the region, or staying home this summer, you should... Join a book club Reading a book can be very relaxing, but sometimes you get a hold of one that makes you want to hop out of bed and tell your friends about how awesome it is. Book clubs offer an interactive element to reading. Most libraries in southern Mecklenburg and western Union counties offer them. Park Road Books in Charlotte also holds a handful of monthly book clubs, including ones for foodies and self-described geeks.

Try a three-course meal Day in and day out, you go through the drive-thru or nuke a TV dinner in the microwave. Why not give a fancy restaurant a try? Queens Feast: Charlotte Restaurant Week offers three-course meals at more than 100

of the region's best restaurants for just $30 or $35. Places like Sante in Matthews, The Trail House in Indian Trail and dozens of eateries in SouthPark and Ballantyne have been known to participate in the January and July promotions.

$ Read books for enrichment Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Union County Public Library offer summer reading programs and dozens of education programming to prevent children’s learning skills from getting rusty. CML's program, dubbed "Summer Break: Read, Learn, Explore," spans June 1 to Aug. 10. Youth earn badges for the minutes of reading they log. UCPL's program, “A Universe of Stories” runs June 1 to Aug. 3. The library system is

rewarding prizes for different age levels and hosting space-themed events.

Shop at a farmers market Farmers markets give residents the opportunity not only to support local farmers and artisans, but also connect families to fresh produce and breads at their dinner tables. Several communities have them, including Indian Trail, Matthews, Mint Hill, Monroe, Pineville, south Charlotte and Waxhaw. Most open Saturday mornings through the fall. Some like the Matthews Community Farmers Market, offer entertainment, such as cooking demonstrations and music.

Donate the gift of life Blood banks are most vulnerable during the summer as families take vacations. The American Red Cross and OneBlood, formerly Community Blood Center of the Carolinas, host blood drives throughout the region. OneBlood also collects blood daily at its Charlotte (4447 South Blvd.) and Ballantyne (12239 N. Community House Road) centers. Visit www.cbcc.us or www.redcross blood.org for details. Hang out at the mall Shopping online is convenient, but you miss out on people watching and the sweet scent of Cinnabons. Summer offers opportunities to catch up on what's new. Build relations with police Aug. 6 marks the 36th anniversary of National Night Out, a campaign designed to build connections between communities and law enforcement. Some neighborhoods throughout Charlotte hold their own events, but some communities like Matthews, Mint Hill, Waxhaw and Indian Trail have been known to hold town-wide events or festivals that promote best-practices in safety.

Escape the monotony Trying to escape with your friends from a locked room may sound like the premise of a 2000s horror movie or a 1980s big hair action adventure show (MacGyver was the man), but it's actually a great team-building activity. The region has several escape rooms, including Breakout Games in Pineville, Escape Risk in Matthews, Masterpiece Escapes in Indian Trail, Timed Out in south Charlotte and Waxhaw Escape in Waxhaw.

Bounce on trampolines If you want your children to beat the heat but still get out that extra energy, then an indoor trampoline park could do the trick. Urban Air Adventure Park in Mint Hill, Defy Gravity in Charlotte, as well as Sky High Sports and Sky Zone in Pineville, offer more than mere jumping up and down. These venues offer attractions like dodgeball, obstacle courses and even laser tag.

$ Summer safety tip: Heat kills more than 600 people in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Preventing heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion, is important for people of all ages, but extreme heat poses the greatest risk for people under age 4 and over 65, and anyone who has a pre-existing medical condition or who lives in a home without air conditioning. Find air-conditioning during hot hours, wear cool clothing, drink plenty of liquids and pay attention to heat advisories. Unprotected skin can be burned by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes, but can take up to 12 hours for the skin to show the damage. CDC recommends staying out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when its UV rays are at their highest level. Sunscreen is recommended for anyone working and playing outside in the summer, even on cloudy days. Hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves are also recommended for outdoors activities.
