What Makes Levine Hearing Different? by Madison Levine
Since opening in July 2015, Levine Hearing has experienced a warm welcome from South Charlotte. Across the street from the Arboretum Shopping Center, Levine Hearing is owned and operated by Madison Levine, a second generation Hearing Instrument Specialist. Her mother started her clinic nearly 30 years ago in Macon, Georgia, and Madison has modeled her own practice after her mother’s, as an independent operation, with the focus on patient care first. Skin Therapy of Charlotte staff celebrates Best Day Spa. The staff includes (from left) Ray Zoller, Carol Zoller, Regina Earnhardt and Aubry Gallagher. Grant Baldwin/UCW photo

Being independent means that Levine Hearing is not owned by any hearing aid manufacturer, allowing Madison to choose the best treatment plan and hearing devices to fit each patient’s individual needs and budget. She has accounts with all major manufacturers, including Starkey, Resound, Phonak, Widex, Oticon, Unitron, Rexton, Siemens and others. This makes it very simple for patients to transition their care to her practice if they are moving to Charlotte from out of town or if they are just looking to switch providers locally. With the newest technology available, any of these brands can be sold through Levine Hearing, but Madison makes selections based on her patient’s needs and budget.
Madison says that her goal is to be the most trusted hearing care practice in Charlotte and she believes that starts with straightforward advertising. Madison says, “I am building my practice on happy patients, not on advertising gimmicks or flashy spending.” Those savings are then passed on to her patients, who in turn refer others to the practice. Patients are referring their friends because the price, service and outcome have all resulted in that trust that Levine Hearing is working so hard for. She goes on to say, “People tell me all the time that they know someone who isn’t happy with their hearing aids and I just say...well, send them to me, because my patients are happy!” Levine Hearing’s online reviews (they are 5 stars across all sites, just google “Levine Hearing”) reflect that Madison takes the time to educate the patient on their test results and also on the whole range of treatment options. She says that it is essential to get that transparent advice so that a patient doesn’t choose the budget option, only to realize it was a waste, or vice-versa, to overpay when a more affordable solution was within reach. Levine Hearing keeps the focus on good customer service, excellent clinical care, and reasonable pricing, to ensure that they will be around to service Charlotte for a very long time!

Best of the Weekly can bring out the worst
T
his issue marks the culmination of Charlotte Media Group’s second annual Best of the Weekly campaign. A couple of months ago, we began publishing ballots in our newspapers and directing readers to vote online for their favorite businesses. Readers submitted thousands of votes, and we pres- Justin Vick ent the winners in this special edition. Congratulations to the businesses whose goods and services resonated so well with their clients and the community. Winners tend to be companies that cultivate relationships with customers. Some have developed brand recognition through advertising. Others have merely asked their most loyal customers on social media to vote for them. From my experience at other newspapers, I expect to receive some phone calls and emails from people that are disappointed their businesses didn’t win any awards. These people remind me of my younger sister. She angrily threatened in elementary
school to write a letter to Nintendo because the “Castlevania” game “cheated.” The game didn’t cheat. She didn’t know how to play the game. There’s always that person that calls in after the contest ends to ask several questions about the process. They want you to think they are curious, but they harbor a vendetta. You can hear it in their voice. By the end of the conversation, they talk junk about the winner, question the integrity of the contest and curse future generations of Vicks. I once had an angry caller tell me that she wasn’t aware of the newspaper’s Reader’s Choice competition because we didn’t promote it enough. Well, I guess if you don’t read the newspaper, you don’t have a choice. While I’m terrible at consoling people (especially sore losers), I enjoy getting feedback about the campaign. Feel free to shoot me an email to suggest future categories. I promise to write down your ideas and keep them in a transition folder in case I am killed by someone who didn’t win Best Toilet Store. Justin Vick is managing editor of Charlotte Media Group.

Sardis Marketplace carries wide range of finds Contributor
It seems with each passing day, we hear of another retailer closing due the increasingly stiff competition from online shopping. So when it comes to discovering a unique gift or find for the home, it can be difficult to decide whether to join the online bandwagon or shop at a major outlet found in nearly every major city in the country. Fortunately for us here, we have Sardis Marketplace, located in Matthews. Sardis Marketplace is best described as a destination-shopping boutique where you can find nearly anything, including toys, furniture, culinary delicacies, community art, jewelry and fashion. It would be daunting to list the opportunities located in the 20,000-square-foot emporium. Opened last year, Sardis Marketplace is the offspring of Consignments on South that was previously located on South Boulevard. Consignments on South was opened and operated by Ruth Purrazzella and it was her daughter, Jennifer, who took up the reins and is expanding the business. What makes Sardis Marketplace stand out is the high level of involvement and combined experience of Ruth and Jennifer. Ruth has been a longtime creative entrepreneur with experience in antique malls, Black Lion and refinishing furniture.

New Zealand Café has crunchy culinary history by Matthew Barnes Contributor
What is it that comes to mind when you think of New Zealand? If you’re like most Americans, it’s somewhere between nothing, beaches, white wine or Lord of the Rings. Perhaps kiwis if you’re into that sort of thing. But what if I told you one of the best places in town to get sushi is aptly named, New Zealand Café? While raw rolled-up fish may not be the first image one conjures thinking of the tropical island territory, it is a booming and blooming cuisine on that side of the Pacific. With globalization, the Asian population in both New Zealand and its neighboring country, Australia, have shot up so steeply that the integration is comparable to how the United States became a Hispanic-speaking country. But at the heart of every culture is their food, and here in Charlotte, the New Zealand Café has brought its artisan sea cuisine, inspired by this union of lifestyle to the Queen City. The New Zealand Café, located right off Sardis Road North, offers a wide and genuine selection of the various styles of sushi. Here, one may take the common entryway with maki-zushi, rolled up rice and fish alongside preferred ingredients in dried seaweed. If you’re looking for lighter fare, consider Nigiri-zushi, more finger-like shaped and bite sized. Either way, it’ll come with wasabi, and if the stories of people making the awful mistake of taking it as guacamole hasn’t reached you, I’ll mention the green garnish to be one of the hottest chomps to be had (though avocado often does come as a garnish). The venue is headed by co-owner Jackie

Chen, whose culinary history provides the integrity of the restaurant. He spent nearly three years honing his sushi-making craft in Hong Kong before taking it to both New Zealand and New York. But of all the major cities, why did he choose Charlotte? His principle reasons include the weather, as many transplants can agree shoveling snow every year is no fun. But that leads to the second, the growing population. New Zealand Café has been at the forefront of Charlotte’s growth, having seen it rise over the past 13 years and has accumulated a loyal following in the surrounding neighborhood. Its small interior of about 25-seating capacity is supported by a thriving take-out as people come on lunch break or after work for modestly priced dishes, such as the King lobster roll, a popular favorite, or dessert on the run, which includes fried bananas and ice cream.
