The list is extremely impressive, but it’s easy to see why he is so coveted. Not only is he a huge individual, and at least two inches taller with his current hairdo, but Carter is smart, instinctive and can move really well for such a big guy. But Carter is far more focused on having a great senior season than

ootball is back. Every team has its expectations, coaches are pumped up for what could be and the players are so excited to kick off the season and finally hit someone on another team when it really matters. To me, high school football season is the best season of them all and especially so after sitting idle over the summer. Every year there are surprises, disappointments and programs that take the next step in solidifying their place among our state’s football dynasties. This season is great because we have all of that. We have bigtime college coaches checking out practices in the area looking for the next mega star. Many of the bonafide stars are already cemented with their college choices, but plenty of intrigue remains with where others will end up playing on Saturdays. But the biggest mystery of all is the teams. Where will they end up in the standings? Are there any teams making big jumps this season? Who are the next big stars?

Most big-time college recruits fortunate enough to be in a similar position to that of Butler offensive lineman Anthony Carter Jr. have nearly every move of theirs magnified and scrutinized. Carter is no exception. When the 6-foot-5, 300-pound left tackle dropped news June 5 on

Twitter that he’d narrowed down his list of the 30 or so college programs wooing him down to his final 11, it got 100 shares and more than 1,200 likes. For the record, his final 11 included, in no particular order: Illinois, Central Florida, Louisville, North Carolina, N.C. State, Texas A&M, Syracuse, Boston College, Michigan State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

A dozen matchups with major storylines to follow this fall The schedule is loaded with can't-miss games every week and it'll be tough to decide where I should spend my Friday nights. I assume most fans are loyal to their school, but these are the games I'm most looking forward to because of the rivalries and for what they could potentially mean come playoff time. Aug. 22 Butler vs. Hough; Charlotte Christian vs. Sun Valley The season kicks off with a pair of games at the Matthews Sportsplex, which is a great venue to watch anything. The heavyweights will be out in full force here. Hough's Evan Pryor is one of the state’s best running backs, but Butler can run the ball themselves. In the early game, the Knights have never shied away from competition, but must stop Sun Valley’s star receiver Gavin Blackwell to keep their 21-game win streak intact.

August 20th, at 7:00 p.m.

P ROVIDENCE

Butler and Mallard Creek is always must-see football. These two powerhouses don’t like each other at all, but there’s always respect when they face off. Former Butler running back Quasean Holmes is now Mallard Creek’s main ball carrier, which should be fun. South Meck and Independence will be interesting for a number of reasons. First, the Patriots are expected to be pretty good, but former Indy coach Joe Evans could score a big upset for his new Sabre team with an upset. Sept. 27 Providence Day at Metrolina Christian Providence Day is expected to challenge for the NCISAA Division I title while the Warriors nearly won the Division II title last year. A Metrolina win would validate that this is most certainly a program on the rise.

Aug. 23 Myers Park vs. Olympic There is much expected of the Mustangs this season, and rightfully so. They need to get off on the right foot against Olympic because their bye week comes in the second week of the season so they better go into feeling pretty good about Week 1.

Oct. 4 Charlotte Catholic at Weddington The Cougars are the defending NCHSAA 3-A champs while Weddington won the 3-AA crowns. The running back and linebacker play in this game will be phenomenal, but the Warriors will be upset minded with star Will Shipley.

Aug. 30 Butler at Mallard Creek; South Meck at Independence

Oct. 11 Butler at Myers Park This is quickly becoming

one of the best rivalries in the state as the two jockey for Southwestern 4A supremacy. Coaches Brian Hales and Scott Chadwick are two of the very best in the business and will have their teams amped for this one. Oct. 22 Charlotte Christian at Providence Day; Country Day at Latin These games could be previews of the NCISAA Division I (Christian vs Providence Day) and Division II (Latin vs. Country Day) finals. Country Day won last year after upsetting Latin, and the Chargers have hopes of knocking off the mighty Knights. Nov. 2 Independence at Rocky River These two conference rivals so don’t like each other that last season there was an on-field scrum that led to the teams forfeiting the rest of the season. There won’t be another incident, but the game will be intense and could be for third place in the Southwestern 4A as both teams should be much better than in 2018. Nov. 8 Ardrey Kell at Providence These two teams meet on the last day of the season with potentially everything on the line in the So. Meck 7. They are bitter rivals to begin with, but if there is more on the line this could be the game of the year. - Andrew Stark

BREAKDOWN (continued from page 1A)

Coach: Brian Hales, ninth season (86-20) 2018 Record: 9-3, 7-0 in Southwestern 4A Returning Starters: Offense, 6; Defense, 7 Inside the Huddle There may not be a tougher opening three weeks in the state than Hough, Mallard Creek and Richmond all away from home, but the Bulldogs never shy away from competition. This year, new quarterback Parish Metzger will cut his teeth early, but he's poised to lead the talented offense. The run game should be the strength once again with Jamal Worthy and Lamont Brooks running behind the offensive line featuring three-year starter Leo Arredondo and big-time recruits Anthony Carter and Trey Richburg. Bo Huff can block, but is more of a pass-catching tight end. Josh Barnette is the most experienced of the receivers, but there is plenty of skill and athleticism to work with. The defense gave up the most points in four seasons last year, but expect that unit to be better. Mainstays John Park and Bryce Dixon lead the defensive line, but Richburg, Arredondo and Carter could spend time there, too. Isiah Burney will be in on a lot of tackles at middle linebacker and the

Which teams will take a step back this season after big performances last year? So many questions, huh? Below is my annual conference breakdown that has it everything a football fan needs to know – from the stars to make sure you watch for, to predictions for each team, the order of finish in each conference and much more. Here we go:

The Bulldogs have been a model of consistency since coach Brian Hales took over before the 2011 season and will be exceptionally good again this year with returning talent, including (back from left) Donovan Law, Isiah Burney, Jacalyn Morrison, Leo Arredondo, Trey Richburg and (front, from right) Darius Law, Lamar Brooks and Josh Barnette. Andrew Stark/MMHW photo Law twins return to man the outside of a good linebacking corps. Jacalyn Morrison is back in the secondary to lead a unit that has plenty of athletes. Bottom Line Overall, the Bulldogs remain a model of consistency and will be right in line with Myers Park to compete for another league title. If some of the newcomers gel on both sides of the line and Worthy and his big offensive line can consistently move

INDEPENDENCE Coach: Mike Natoli, third season (8-15) 2018 Record: 5-6, 2-5 in Southwestern 4A Returning Starters: Offense, 7; Defense, 9 Inside the Huddle Coach Mike Natoli has done a magnificent job wading the Patriots through some tough times both on the field and off and now is set to reap the rewards. Independence returns five senior starters to the offensive line including 6-foot-5 left guard Malik Kelly.

Arnold Taylor is the Patriots' new quarterback after transferring from Berry. He has some major weapons to get the ball to, including Shai Wheeler (40 catches, 582 yards and eight TDs) and Trevor Bryan (33 catches, 583 yards and three TDs). Brevin Caldwell and Brian Morgan are also dangerous and capable receivers, and big-bodied defensive standout Tyson Clawson gives them an intriguing target at the goal line. Another name to know is running back David Nelson, who missed all of last year. He is a 5-10, 220-pound junior who Natoli is very high on. Clawson (50 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks and 10 QB

hurries) is the leader of a good defensive front that also includes Sirr Robinson, a run-stuffer who missed all of last season. All three linebackers return including Zazueta and Robinson, the team’s leading tacklers last season. Wheeler has a knack for the ball wherever and is one corner opposite Elijah Puranda in a talented secondary. Bottom Line The Patriots' time may have come as they look to further restore a proud program. This team has a great mix of talent and skill. The experience they got playing together last year should pay big dividends. The first four games of the season will be key, but if they can start 3-1, this team will be back in the playoffs.

Southwestern 4A Projected Order of Finish Myers Park 11-0; 7-0 Butler 8-3; 6-1 Rocky River 6-5; 4-3 Porter Ridge 6-5; 4-3 Independence 5-6; 3-4 Hickory Ridge 4-7; 3-4 Garinger 3-8; 2-5 East Meck 0-11; 0-7 The Southwestern 4A is a league with clearly defined contenders, middle of the road teams who could surprise in a good or bad way and the non-contenders who will struggle greatly in the league. Last season, it was Butler who cruised through the league unscathed, but it was Myers Park with the long playoff run and the final statement as they overwhelmed the Bulldogs 33-8 in the playoffs. Those are clearly the two teams atop the league this season, although there are many questions behind them. Myers Park is loaded offensively. They tout Alabama commit Drake Maye at quarterback, Moose Muhammad (Texas A&M) and Porter Rooks (N.C. State) among the talented receivers, Logan Mauldin will make a big impact at tight end and play on Saturdays and brothers Tim and Jacob Newman are receiving plenty of recruiting interest. Mustangs big horses has team on rise

BREAKDOWN (continued from page 3A)

by Andrew Stark andrew@cmgweekly.com

CHARLOTTE – It took Myers Park coach Scott Chadwick a couple of seasons to get his feet wet in the Southwestern 4A conference and it took him a couple more to finally topple mighty Butler, a team who had owned the Mustangs and beaten them in 18 straight games dating back to 2000. But Myers Park has now ended the Bulldogs season each of the two past years in the playoffs and the Mustangs have made themselves into a state-wide power coming off a school-record 13 wins and a trip to the regional final. The scary thing is this team, full of stars headed to play big-time college football when their time in green and white is over, can be even better. Sure, there are some questions. The offensive line will be young and untested. The linebackers opposite mainstay Roe Chitwood will be new and there is some concern about the depth of both lines. But there are answers, too. At receiver, the Mustangs boast seniors Porter Rooks, an N.C. State commit who caught 50 balls for 652 yards in eight games with Providence Day last season, and Moose Muhammad, a Texas A&M recruit who hauled in 58 passes for 1,003 yards and eight touchdowns and is one of the elite return men in the state. Muhammad is a four-star recruit ranked No. 3 overall in the state and the No. 23-ranked wide receiver in the Class of 2020. Rooks is a threestar ranked No. 5 overall in the state. He’s the 26th-ranked receiver in the Class of 2020. The two have known each other for years, having played with and against each other in middle school. They teamed up at Providence Day in 10th grade. Now after a one-year hiatus, they are back again. “We saw the opportunity,” Rooks said with a smile. “We all have the same goal. Of course, we’re all going different places to play and to play at a high level, but we have to finish this year. We have a whole season ahead of us, so we’re trying to make it a special one.” The receiver duo should each have huge seasons in Chadwick’s offensive system, and especially so catching passes from Alabama commit Drake Maye, who threw for over 3,200 yards and fired 36 touchdowns against just five interceptions. Maye is a four-star recruit ranked No. 5 overall prospect in the Class of 2021 and the No. 7 overall dual threat quarterbacks in the country. Before committing to the Crimson Tide, Maye was the only player in the class to hold

Myers Park senior stars (from left) Moose Muhammad, Cameron Roseman-Sinclair and Porter Rooks are just some of the standouts looking to take the Mustangs back to the regional finals and beyond. Andrew Stark/MMHW photo

offers from Alabama and Clemson among his cache of recruiting interest. Logan Mauldin and Jordan Bly caught just 17 balls between them last season, but should see a big uptick this season. That’s especially true for Mauldin, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound tight end who is sneaking up the recruiting rankings. Joining that group is Twan Flip, a Country Day transfer who averaged eight yards per rush attempt and led the Bucs with 23 receptions for 483 yards and nine touchdowns in their 2018 NCISAA Division II title run. He’s also an exceptional return man who should help further ignite the Mustang offense. “The athleticism and talent on this team speaks for itself, but we just have to do all of the little things right,” Muhammad said. (“Coach Chadwick holds us to a very high standard. Everything we do, we do as a team. He preaches to us that your team is as weak as the weakest link, so we’re always pushing each other. It’s a brotherhood and we connect more off the field than we do on it. When it’s gametime, it’s just bread and butter.”) While the offense will be cooking on game days, the key to how far the Mustangs can go rests on the capable shoulders of North Carolina commit Cameron Roseman-Sinclair and the defense. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s top safeties, Roseman-Sinclair is a 4-star recruit ranked No. 9 in the state and the No. 9 safety in the country by 247sports.com. He said despite some questions up front and at linebacker, the defense is coming together

We have a whole season ahead of us, so we’re trying to make it a special one.” • Porter Rooks

nicely and ready to keep the Mustangs around last season's 10.2 points per game average, the lowest number from any Myers Park defense in 20 years. “We go against the best offense every day of the week in practice, so we don’t worry about game day," he said. "Game day is going to be easy compared with what we face out here every single day. We’re just working out here every day. For us, consistency getting to the ball and communication are the key. This year, we’re really big about communication before the play, so that’s what’s going to hold us.” Muhammad and the offense said no matter who they’re playing on Friday nights, the preparation will be the same. The Mustangs know this could be a very special season, and especially so with this rare collection of talent on the same field. But they won’t get ahead of themselves in the pursuit for the school’s first title. “We’ve been playing together for years and now we’re here together for one more season.” Rooks said. “It’s our last ride, so it’s a different attitude because this is our last chance to get a ring. The next level is going to be a lot harder to get a ring, so we’re focused on doing it right now.”

the Mustangs may start three sophomores, which could be an issue early. North Carolina commit Cameron Roseman-Sinclair is always around the ball and joins Roe Chitwood among the defensive leaders. There are huge expectations on this team as they look to join the handful of elites in the state, and a title would quickly validate the work coach Scott Chadwick has done with this program. Butler is the mainstay powerhouse who has remained among the state’s top teams in all of coach Brian Hales' eight seasons. This year will be no exception. They will be able to run the ball at will with power back Jamal Worthy picking the holes made behind Trey Richburg, Leo Arredondo and Anthony Carter. If the other side of the line develops and Lamont Brooks can get a few touches, the run game can be elite. New quarterback Parish Metzger will have to throw some to keep defenses honest. He’ll love throwing to long and nimble receiver Josh Barnette. Muhammad Al-Taher, Isaih Burney, twins Donovan and Darius Law, Jacalyn Morrison and John Park will have the Butler defense as one of the league’s best again. While Butler and Myers Park are the clear-cut favorites, there is an interesting mix of four teams – Rocky River, Independence, Hickory Ridge and Porter Ridge – who could go either way. I think the Ravens are the team who will make a big jump. Rocky River’s duo of Kalib Jennings and Kirkland Williams, who also is the team’s top returning receiver, will be among the league’s rushing leaders despite splitting carries. MYERS PARK

BREAKDOWN (continued from page 4A)

Coach: Scott Chadwick, 6th season (47-19) 2018 Record: 13-2, 6-1 in Southwestern 4A Returning Starters: Offense, 5; Defense, 6 Inside the Huddle Myers Park has upped its win total during each of the last five seasons under Scott Chadwick. This year, the Mustangs boast arguably the state’s top group of wide receivers with Mushin Muhammad III and Porter Rooks, a Providence Day transfer who will benefit from playing with star quarterback Drake Maye, an Alabama commit among the nation’s top junior signal callers. Throw in receivers Jordan Bly and Country Day transfer Twan Flip along with next-level tight end Logan Mauldin and there may not be a better group of pass catchers in the state. The offensive line will be mostly new and will start at least three sophomores including Cam Nichols, so that unit is the key to the run game, featuring brothers Tim and Jacob Newman who are both electric ball carriers. Defensively, the Mustangs have a top-tier secondary featuring North Carolina commit Cameron Roseman-Sinclair, Bly and Independence transfer Caleb LeGrand. Up front, they are big and tough with strong guys like Andrew Bookman and Joseph Bakhole. Linebacker Roe Chitwood leads that unit, which is replacing two starters.

The Mustangs have increased their winning total in each of coach Scott Chadwick’s seasons at the helm. This year, with huge expectations and talent at every position, Myers Park will rely on guys like (from left) Blake Wicks, Roe Chitwood, Tim Newman, Jordan Brown and Parker Mendenhall as they look to win their first state title in school history. Andrew Stark/MMHW photo Bottom Line Overall, this is as talented a team as any in Charlotte as they look to improve upon their regional final appearance. The offense will be unstoppable at times both through the air and, if the line gels, on the ground. The key is finding a pair of linebackers to match Chitwood’s intensity, but that’s just nitpicking a team with very few weaknesses and next-level talent oozing from every position group.

Depth Chart Offense QB: Drake Maye; RB: Tim Newman/Jacob Newman; WR: Muhsin Muhammad III; WR: Porter Rooks; WR: Twan Flip; TE: Logan Mauldin; LT: Cam Nichols; LG: Parker Mendenhall; C: Jack Malloy; RG: Bo Crutcher; and RT: Kyle Novak. has plenty of other weapons to throw to including receivers Isaiah McIlwain and Tyrone McNair and big tight end target Sinceer Scott. The offensive line is stout and experienced, and there is depth to get them off the field at times. Kaishaun Royster, Kalil Alexander, Brian Grier and Korian Sharpe are all-conference level players who will lead a defense that should greatly improve a unit that allowed more than 25 points per game a season ago. Independence is another team headed in the right direction and possibly headed for their first playoff berth since 2015. There are playmakers galore with guys like Shai Wheeler, Trevor Bryan, Brian Morgan and Brevin Caldwell leading a very underrated receiving corps and stud defensive lineman Tyson Clawson is a red zone threat at tight end. The defense, which returns Clawson, Omar Zazueta, Dante Anderson and Sean Pruitt among others, allowed over three touchdowns a season ago but will be much improved. Porter Ridge rode the coattails of a wonderful senior class and made it all the way to the regional finals. With those losses, there has to be some fallout and I think there will be a little. But there is still plenty of talent. The only returning offensive starters are linemen Sean Ahaotu-Simelane and Jason Gonzlaez, but watch out for some of the skill guys, including receiver/running back Kirkland Harris, receiver Nick Horstkamp and running backs Brandon Perry and Alex Chapman. New quarterback Nathan Cox has looked great this see BREAKDOWN, Page 6A

The Panthers are coming off a great second half of 2018 that saw them finish 5-1 in the league, and they hope to carry that momentum forward. The Panthers should contend for another crown with returning players such as (kneeling) electric playmaker Jake Snapp and (back, from left) star kicker Eddie Czaplicki, Harrison Hellner, Jalen Brooks, Charles Charnock and Rece Hider. Andrew Stark/MMHW photo

PROVIDENCE Coach: Weslee Ward, first season 2018 Record: 6-6, 5-1 in So. Meck 7 Returning Starters: Offense, 2; Defense, 5 Inside the Huddle Coach Weslee Ward takes over the Panthers after serving as an assistant for the past three seasons. He’ll inherit a team that lost 16 seniors, including the majority of the starters from last year’s co-conference championship team that struggled early before coming on late in the season. Ward sees the loss of those seniors as a chance to grow some in-house talent and continue right where they left off last season. New quarterback Holland Stallings started the past two seasons on JV and is ready to roll. He’ll have a consistent receiving corps that includes Rece Hider, soccer convert Josh Colston and speedy junior Jake Snapp. Charles Charnock is a three-year starter at tackle and is joined up front by Adam Boguski and big Jalen

Brooks. Snapp headlines a quick secondary that also features playmakers Darrin Rice, Mason Bryant and Dewayne Gissendanner. Linebackers Sam Decker and John Balas are both just sophomores and the D-line, led by Mason Adkins, transfer Chris Gates and Jack Brown, is a physical bunch. Eddie Czaplicki has already been offered by N.C. State and is one of the region’s top kickers who will also handle punting and kickoff duties. Snapp is a very dangerous return man and will get many chances. Bottom Line The Panthers could easily win the So. Meck 7, which has been a coaching carrousel of late. They’re a little inexperienced overall, but the Panthers will only get better as the year goes on as the tal-

ented underclassmen learn on the job. 11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection According to some industry experts, there are over 33 physicals problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection. A new report titled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” identifies the most common problems found, and what to do before listing your home. If a building inspector flags any of these 11 items it could cost you delays at your closing, or worse, possibly losing a potential buyer. So if you’re considering listing

summer and is more than capable of leading that group. Lineman Davidson Carroll and linebacker Dylan Burdette lead a cache of nine starters, including Harris, Chapman and Perry, that may make the loss of all of that offense a moot point. Sam Grenier is out after one year as coach at Hickory Ridge, who turns to Jupiter Wilson. The Ragin’ Bulls went just 5-6 with Grenier a year after he improbably led Harding to the state title, and there isn’t much hope they’ll improve too much. Quarterback Silas Cruse played well in spot duty last season. Running backs Mookie McWilliams and Nolan Carey are capable on the ground but six of the Bulls top seven receivers from last year graduated so they’ll need guys to step up there. Charlie Blazi and Tyrell Davis lead a defense averaged barely over two touchdowns a game but lost lots of talent. In 2018, Garinger won three games under veteran coach Jeff Caldwell, who ended the Wildcats 55-game losing streak in 2017 and has the team undeniably headed in the

right direction. However, life in the Southwestern 4A allows him a very small ceiling. Quarterback Antonio Smith led the team in passing and rushing last season and is back as one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the conference. Peter Guest and Shawn Hatchett lead a defense that allowed more than 35 points per game and must improve. East Meck is going to struggle once again after closing the season with seven consecutive losses. It’s more of a numbers problem with the Eagles, who have so many guys going both ways and depth an issue at most positions. Quarterback Trey Truitt led the team in passing and rushing and will be a key once again. The line is a little small in numbers, but they have talented backs in Andrew Scott and Marques Flemming. Linebacker Lawrence Campbell is one of the top returnees, but the unit gave up an average of 36.7 points per game.

Coach Orlando Gray has the Ravens soaring back to the top of the Southwestern 4A standings after a few down seasons. Now, with (from left) Korey Hailey, Korion Sharpe, Kaishaun Royster, Kalil Alexander and Brian Grier, Rocky River is ready to take the next step. Andrew Stark/MMHW photo

ROCKY RIVER Coach: Orlando Gray, third season (8-15) 2018 Record: 4-6, 2-4 in Southwestern 4A Returning Starters: Offense, 6; Defense, 4 Inside the Huddle Last season, an incident in a win over rival Independence stained what was going to be a 6-6 campaign with two winnable games still left on the schedule forfeited. Coach Orlando Gray has the Ravens headed in the right direction. The conference has heavyweights Butler and Myers Park but the Ravens have the potential to finish third and make the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Korey Hailey took over at quarterback and looked very good in his limited time a season ago. He’s back along with the two-headed rushing attack of Kalib Jennings and Kirkland Williams. Jennings is the top returning receiver, but the Ravens are high on that group, including tight end Sinceer Scott. The offensive line, anchored by all-conference tackle Korion Sharpe, is young yet experienced as most have started the past three seasons.

Sharpe will play a little defensively up front as well, but the run stuffers are Yusef Shah and Kaishaun Royster. All-conference middle linebacker Brian Grier had right at 100 tackles, and Kalil Alexander is inline for a big season as well. The secondary has some two-way players, but is full of athletes. Bottom Line It looks like the turnaround is in full circle and the Ravens are trending in the right direction. The offensive line should key a good run game, and Grier and Alexander may be the conference’s best two linebackers. There’s a lot to like about this team, but the key will be putting it all together in a tough conference. Depth Chart Offense QB: Korey Hailey; RB: Kalib Jennings/Kirkland Williams; WR: Isaiah McIlwain; WR: Tyrone McNair; WR: AJ Collins; TE: Sinceer Scott; LT: Kendall Stanley; LG: Anthony Gunter/Michael Berry/Edwin Freeman; C: Alfredo Alvarez; RG: Gabriel Palacios; and RT: Korion Sharpe. Defense DE: Kaishaun Royster; DE: Yusef Shah; DT: Isaiah Brutton; DT: Korion Sharpe; LB: Brian Grier; LB: Jaquan Scott/Miles McNeil; LB: Kalil Alexander; CB: Tyler Jennings; CB: Jevon Mciver; S: Kalib Jennings; and S: Jacorian Cosby. Special Teams K: Alex Elzey; P: Alex Elzey; P Ret: Kalib Jennings/Isaiah McIlwain; and K Ret: AJ Collins.

Malik McGowan, Charlotte Catholic OL Profile: 6-4, 350 pounds Recruit: 3-star prospect ranked No. 40 in N.C. Class of 2020 Committed: North Carolina

I just want to do all that I can to lead my team into victory each and every game. Mostly, I want to finish every block on every play. If I do that, we can be successful.”

Andrew Stark: Congrats on committing to North Carolina. They are getting a lot of top-level talent in the state including yourself, but what was it that stood out to you? Malik McGowan: It was fun. We worked hard and they were grinding and trying to get some of those other guys to commit, too. AS: This is a good offensive line and you have some really talented backs to block for. What should we expect from this offense? MM: We’re going to go undefeated. I’m putting that out there, but we’re going to try to go undefeated. I know we’re going to get back to states and win another one. AS: What are your goals as a senior offensive lineman leading the two-time defending champs and a team with a big target on their back? MM: I just want to do all that I can to lead my team into victory each and every game. Mostly, I want to finish every block on every play. If I do that, we can be successful.

ship game MVP, how have your goals changed coming into 2019? Lamagea McDowell: My goal for this year is to definitely go back and win another state championship, and I definitely want to be a good leader on this team. One of my personal goals is to all-state this year, but I’m looking forward to having a good year as a team and as an individual. AS: I know you have quite a few offers and schools are definitely starting to take an interest in you. What is the recruiting process been like for you? LM: It’s going pretty well. I have offers from (Old Dominion), UNC Charlotte, Liberty, Campbell, Eastern Kentucky and Fordham. Liberty and Old Dominion are the ones that have been talking to me a lot, and I plan to set up an official visit soon with those two. I probably won’t commit until later in the season because I want to see if I can get a Power 5 (offer). I’m definitely looking forward to this year and seeing if that can happen. AS: You seem to get stronger the more carries you get in a game and also as the season wears on Catholic has always relied on their run game. How are you able to do that? LM: I don’t know. I just think I’m doing all that I can to be a great leader any way that I can. David Billiard, Covenant Day Strongside Defensive End Profile: 6-foot-3, 260 pounds Summer school: Was named a top five defensive linemen at VTOs All-American Challenge in June. Double Duty: Billiard will play both ways this season. Andrew Stark: You guys are taking a big step up in competition

Julian Swann, Country Day Defensive End Profile: 6-foot-1, 280 pounds Colleges: Swann is receiving plenty of interest from Coastal Carolina, Wofford, the Charlotte 49ers and others. Andrew Stark: Country Day hadn’t won a title since 2000. What was it like for your team to break through that last season? Juliann Swan: It was a great feeling. I thought we worked all summer and all fall last season, it transferred to the field and we got what we deserved. AS: How does that transfer into this season? You may have snuck up on some teams last year, but now you’re getting everyone’s best shot. JS: This year, we made a few changes in terms of X’s and O’s, so it’s a little more fast-paced. I think we also have a winning mentality because I understand a few years back it was kind of rough with the wins and losses. I feel

like this state championship put a lot more confidence in the team. AS: How is this season different for you coming in as a leader on the defending state champions? JS: I’m trying to step up as a leader and be a great teammate. I’m here to work and to make us better and make everyone around me better. AS: You’re getting lots of recruiting interest and have schools after you and watching you. Does that change the way you prepare at all? JS: It pushes me to play harder, to practice harder and to make myself better overall as a player.

and have a new coach this season, so how has the offseason been overall? David Billiard: It’s been going really well and I really like our new coach (Pete McSwarin). He’s a great guy and he really knows what he’s doing out there for sure. I think we’re going to have a great season. We don’t have as much depth as I would like, but that’s something we just have to deal with being a small school. AS: I know you get to play both ways again this season and are getting recruited as a defensive player, but just curious which one you like better. DB: I like defense. I haven’t gotten to play defense as much as I like this season, but this year I have a feeling I’m going to take on a much bigger role and be out there a lot on defense. AS: How is the recruiting process going for you? DB: I’ve had some interest from some FBS or FCS schools. I don’t have any offers yet, but I think that during the season I will get some, and I’ll be able to make my decision at some time after that. AS: What are your goals this season playing a tougher schedule and playing some of the state’s top private schools again? DB: One of our goals is to continue to have a winning season. We haven’t had a year (two JV seasons included), where we didn’t have a winning record. I think we want to continue that and make the playoffs again. AS: You do it in the classroom as well I see. Do you know what your grade-point average is and what you want to study? DB: It’s a 3.5 I think. I go back

and forth between engineering and exercise science, but something like that for sure. JB Awolowo, Charlotte Christian RB/WR/DB Profile: 5-9, 195 pounds Offers: Notre Dame College, Eastern Kentucky and North Caroli- Awolowo na Central Key Stats: 15.7 yards per rush; 21 catches for 221 yards; 512 kick return yards; eight total touchdowns; 54 tackles, five sacks and two interceptions Andrew Stark: People on the outside will say Charlotte Christian will be down after all that they lost. We know that’s a mistake, but why will you guys be able to bounce back so quickly? JB Awolowo: Yes sir, they may but we have a lot of really good players, and we will prove them wrong. AS: You did everything last season including punting some. Does your role change any this season? JA: I don’t think so. Last year, I was sort of a role player but was still able to be a big factor. This year, I’m going to have to do a lot better than last year. I have to run the ball, catch the ball, maybe throw it, play linebacker and at safety. I have to three all three phases and make a big impact. AS: You’ve got a lot on your plate. How are you able to juggle all of those roles? JA: It’s a good opportunity in my opinion because it’s going to teach me how to be a leader. It’s not hard, but I have to be vocal, I have to work and I have to show them how to work because we have a young group. Last year, the seniors did a great job, so now it’s our turn to teach them. AS: What is the key to making this another successful season? JA: It’s just listening to coaches. Coach Estep always says he’s giving us the gameplan, we just have to go out and execute it. We have to pay attention to details like stepping with the correct foot, running the right plays and the right routes. That’s all it is. AS: You guys have such a rich tradition of winning. How is this program able to keep that intact year after year? JA: The key is just playing hard. There’s nothing to it. We changed the offense once and it worked so we have to play fast and play physical and that’s all that it is.

I haven’t gotten to play defense as much as I like this season, but this year I have a feeling I’m going to take on a much bigger role and be out there a lot on defense.” • David Billiard

AS: How do you guys get back to the championship and defend your title? JS: Consistency and a tough mentality. We have to be smart about everything and take on all challenges as they come. see COVER GUYS, Page 2B

Best Passing Attack: Myers Park

I’m not scared of anyone bigger than me. That’s never been a fear of mine, so I can play with those guys.”

The Mustangs are blessed to have their collection of skill guys that have them thinking this is the year they could win it all. Last season, Myers Park averaged nearly 36 points per game despite calling off the dogs in many of their blowouts. The scary part is this offense could even be better with (back, from left) tight end Logan Mauldin, receiver Moose Muhammad, quarterback Drake Maye and receivers Patrick Rooks, Jordan Bly and (in front) Country Day transfer Twan Flip. Andrew Stark/MMHW photos

• AJ Tobler

Best Running Game: Butler Butler’s bread and butter has always been its ability to run the ball and oppose its will on opponents. That’s what the Bulldogs want to do, and perhaps no squad in the state is better equipped at running the ball than this 2019 team. The Bulldogs started linemen Anthony Carter (76) and Trey Richburg (73) as freshmen and Leo Arrandando (52) joined them as a sophomore two seasons ago. They’re big and nasty and will open big holes for senior running backs (kneeling, from left) Lamont Brooks and Jamal Worthy.

Best Linebackers: Charlotte Catholic

COVER GUYS (continued from page 1B)

AJ Tobler, Charlotte Latin DT/C Profile: 5-foot-10, 205 pounds On film: Tobler plays much bigger than he appears and has a knack for getting home to the quarterback or grounding ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage. Andrew Stark: You are going to play important roles on both lines again this season. How do you prepare for the pounding of the regular season? AJ Tobler: We’re going out there everyday and working hard in the summer to get better. That’s what drives us. AS: What are some of your goals for your senior season? AT: As a team, I want to make a future for the Charlotte Latin football program after we leave. So this year is important and especially so as a senior. I want to win a state championship for this team and build that feeling in the school. That’s what I’m excited about.

In one of the craziest streaks in all of North Carolina high school football, Charlotte Catholic has posted an incredible 83-1 record in conference games since 2004. Since the 2017 conference realignment, the Cougars are 14-0 in the Southern Carolinas and have dominated mostly on defense. Over the past two seasons, they’ve allowed roughly 8.3 points per game, which led them to a 31-1 record and both 3-A titles. This year, linebackers (from left) Jacob Schachte, Liam Barbee, Billy Brewer and Ty Foley have each already posted over 100 tackles in a season and will lead another talented defense.

AS: You’re not the biggest guy to be the dominating lineman that you are. What is your mentality when you’re out there? AT: I’m not scared of anyone bigger than me. That’s never been a fear of mine, so I can play with those guys. AS: You mentioned leading this team to a title. The talent is there to win the Division II title, but what do you think needs to happen to make it successful? AT: We need to get better every day and get better every week. It’s step-by-step every day and that’s how we’ll get better.

Covenant Day will take a big step up in competition in just their second season of varsity action, but players like (from left) Ben Blackard, Seth Shannon, Edwin Barnes and Ben Walton hope to make first-year coach Pete McSwarin’s first go a successful one. Andrew Stark/MMHW photo

COVENANT DAY

Coach: Pete McSwarin, first season 2018 Record: 6-5, 2-3 in NCISAA Piedmont Returning Starters: Offense, 7; Defense, 8 Inside the Huddle To say the Lions' first season was a success would be a major understatement. They took their lumps (58-0 loss to Charlotte Christian in Week 2) but scored some major upsets (28-14 win over Cannon, their first-ever varsity win) although their schedule as a whole was quite soft. First-year man Pete McSwarin inherits a talented roster that will traverse a much more challenging schedule, so the challenges could still be coming. Robert Stone started last year and had some really big games through the air. The lefty will have good targets in Edwin Barnes, a next-level talent who plays some running back, Josh Lee, Will Turner and Nicko Henderson. David Billiard is 6-foot-3, 250 pounds and will anchor both lines although he’s a college recruit as a defensive end. Seth Shannon, Ethan Clark, Adam Ellington and Jacob Shubert will play both ways a lot, so finding quality depth behind them is the key on both lines. The linebackers – Ben Blackard, Turner and Ben Walton – are a talented bunch while Barnes will double as a safety.

Bottom line It may be a tough season with the uptick in competition including games with Charlotte Latin, Country Day and Charlotte Christian – teams that outscored the Lions 19033 in four losses last year. Their six wins came against teams who combined to go just 12-35 last year, but there is talent here with Billiard, Stone and Barnes in particular. These are just the growing pains a new program often takes. For each of the past five seasons since taking over at Myers Park, coach Scott Chadwick has improved the Mustangs’ win total every year. Last season, he guided them to a school record 13 wins and a trip to the Western regional final, so improving on that will be tough but not impossible. After averaging a school record 35.9 points per game last year, this offense comes back potentially even better, although a new offensive line must hold up for them to reach their full capability. Myers Park has a passing game featuring quarterback Drake Maye, receivers Porter Rooks, Muhsin Muhammad III, Twan Flip, Logan Mauldin and Jordan Bly along with what could become a star-studded running game with brothers Tim and Jacob Newman, so they’re loaded. The key to this year will again be on the other side of the ball, though. While the Mustangs can score with anyone, this defense will need to come close to matching last year’s squad, which surrendered just over 10 points per game. Roe Chitwood returns at linebacker and the secondary is excellent with Bly and Cameron Roseman-Sinclair, one of the country’s best safeties. All in all, this could be a magical season for the Mustangs, who enter the year nationally ranked in many polls and atop the Super 7 maybe to stay. 2. Charlotte Catholic The Cougars are coming off another state title – their second consecutive and third in four seasons. With an elite offensive line featuring North Carolina commit Malik McGowan and stud running backs Lamagea McDowell and Paul Neel leading the way, this team is already able to run the ball with great efficiency, something that will serve them well once the weather cools down. In the meantime, expect a defense that features next level linebackers Ty Foley, Billy Brewer, Jacob Schachte and Liam Barbee to become household names as they limit teams run games and allow the Cougars to once again compete for another title. 3. Charlotte Christian To outsiders, it would appear the Knights lost too much from their unbeaten state championship team, but that would be an oversight. No team can retool as quickly and coach Jason Estep is a master of mixing his schemes to fit his personnel. However, don’t expect this team to look much different than last year. Estep is high on new quarterback Matthew Tuomala. He has a ton of options to get the ball to, including Logan Jones, JB Awolowo and running back Henry Rutledge, who will share carries with Chip Kasay. Freshman Liam Groulx will fit into that offense somewhere, and he could be their next mega star before his four years are up. This team won’t skip a beat on offense, and if LJ Brown can stabilize a new secondary, it could be a third straight title for the Knights.

although Lamont Brooks will get more than his fair share. Whoever has the ball will run behind a seasoned line featuring Anthony Carter, Trey Richburg and Leo Arredondo that could end up being one of the area’s top units. Jacalyn Morrison and the Law brothers – Donovan and Darius – will help shore up a defense that is mean and hungry after ending last year with a painful 33-8 loss to Myers Park in the playoffs. 5. Providence Day Something went terribly wrong for the Chargers who entered the season with such high expectations only to start 0-3 and end on a threegame slide to finish 5-6. Aside from losing some key personnel, not much changes for Providence Day, who is again expected to challenge Charlotte Christian for CISAA supremacy. To do so, Jacolbe Cowan and Kedrick Bingley-Jones will need to have big seasons. Both are major college recruits and terror on the ends. Teams can’t double both of them, and either can change the course of a game. Offensively, Cody Cater is in his third year as the starter and has complete control of the scheme, which should lead to a big year for him and speedy receiver Jesiah Davis. 6. Ardrey Kell

The Knights backdoored their way into a shared So. Meck 7 title as they went 5-1 in league play to reverse a horrendous 1-5 start. Last season, they barely gained over 1,000 yards rushing as a team and averaged under four yards per carry. New coach Greg Jachym seems to have a plan to improve upon that. Out of necessity, Michael Hetzel and Cedric Gray combined to catch over 110 balls between them and could again statistically have the biggest impact of any pair. The key is going to be if they can limit points, but the Knights have stars on defense as well with Gray, the outstanding cornerback, and tackle machine Steven Bauer back at linebacker. The Knights have a chance to establish themselves in a conference that is up for the taking this season. 7. Charlotte Latin The Hawks played young last season at nearly every position, but that’s paid big dividends as now they are the experienced team with 14 seniors playing big roles in 2019. That experience will go along way, but the talent is definitely on the roster to have the Hawks more than competitive in the CISAA and among the top Division II in the state. Jake Helfrich is back at quarterback and running backs Carter Stockwell and Ja’Varis Bufford will split carries and keep each other fresh. All-conference returnees AJ Tobler and Randy Johnson key a defense that allowed just over 17 points per game last season, but should be even stingier this time around.

4. Butler

The Bulldogs love to start their offense with the run game, and that’s going to once again be a very big strength for this year’s squad. Big back Jamal Worthy no longer has to split carries,
