lenger Dan McCready in the race for the Ninth District House of Representatives seat. Bishop finished with 3,937 more votes than McCready in the Sept. 10 special election, according to unofficial results. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence campaigned on Bishop's behalf throughout the Ninth District on Sept. 9. Trump spoke in Fayetteville, while Pence campaigned in Charlotte, Marshville and Wingate, among other stops. Trump tweeted support for Bishop a few times on Election Day, urging North Carolinians to vote for the Republican. “Dan Bishop was down 17 points 3 weeks ago,”

CMS explains dips in state test scores CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools saw results on state tests stay flat, with advances in college and career-ready science scores as well as declines in elementary and middle school literacy scores for the 2018-19 year. Nearly three-fourths (71.7%) of its schools met or exceeded growth expectations, compared to 75.6% a year earlier. CMS said year-over-year comparisons were impossible due to the state changing the math calculation, noting that North Carolina introduced new math scales and a new end-of-course test in Math 3. The state also changed the way it determines which students count as English learners.

For CMS, the percentage of students testing at or above grade-level proficiency declined 0.7 points in reading for grades three through eight and increased 0.8 points in science for grades five and eight. The district outperformed the state on Math 3-8, Science 5 and 8, Math 1, Math 3 and Biology. “CMS is committed to giving each and every student the best education possible,” Superintendent Earnest Winston said. “We are not where we want to be, but we have a high-quality curriculum and high expectations for all students. With our strategic plan in place and the curriculum changes implemented this year, we are focused on helping all students achieve and further our

equity goals.” The district is working with two new curriculum partners, EL Education for English language arts and Open Up Resources for math. The curriculum is being adopted in kindergarten and grades one, two, three and six for English language arts and grade eight for math. The limited release will allow the district to provide targeted learning and support before the curriculum expands to other grade levels and content areas. College- and career-readiness rates measure the percentage of students who scored a 4 or a 5 (the highest score) on the state tests. In see CMS, Page 2A

CHARLOTTE – All eyes were on North Carolina as the Ninth District voted for its congressional representative in the Sept. 10 special election. Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. with voters and canvassers hoping to make an impact on the state’s future in Congress. While voters only see the majority of canvassers outside of their polling place, many of them have been campaigning for months leading up to the election. “This election is going to come down to just a handful of votes,” voluntseer Rachelle Salo said. “And every vote matters.” While Salo was canvassing for a candidate in Charlotte's primary election, she said her special election vote would go toward Democratic candidate Dan McCready. Canvassers supporting Republican candidate Dan Bishop also understood the importance of the election. “There’s been a lot of interest for this campaign and the value it’s going to add to Congress and our country,” Susan Austin said. Winston-Salem resident Joan Fleming drove to Charlotte at 4 a.m. to show her support and volunteer for Bishop at William R. Davie Park. “I want to win this state back red,” Fleming said. At the same polling location, canvasser Debra Wallace hoped to see a blue future for North Carolina. “I have lots of problems with Dan Bishop and his history and see ELECTION, Page 2A

Coach Nicolas Sosa has only lost seven times in 56 matches as the coach of the Providence boys soccer team, but on Sept. 9 all the cards were stacked against him and his team to add to that total. The Panthers had struck first in the game when freshman David Sturgis slipped a shot past the Charlotte Catholic keeper to put Providence up 1-0 just 13 minutes into the game. But in less than three minutes, the Cougars had already answered and tied the game at 1, a score that would remain unchanged through halftime. But with 6:36 to play in the opening

half, the Panthers were dealt the first of their three strikes. Chasing down a Catholic forward on a breakaway, a Providence defender yanked the Cougar striker down by his jersey and was given a red card, making the Panthers play the rest of the match down a man. Worse, by the time 10 minutes had passed in the second half, Charlotte Catholic’s Patrick Fenton had put in two goals within 30 seconds of each other to give the Cougars a 3-1 advantage that looked insurmountable. But Sosa began to see his team had a chance and he knew why. Sosa said he takes his team to the beach see SOCCER, Page 4A

Trump tweeted before all the precincts were in. “He then asked me for help, we changed his strategy together, and he ran a great race.” Trump also criticized CNN and MSNBC for barely talking about the District 9 race as it looked like Bishop was going to win. Bishop had 96,081 votes (50.74%), followed by McCready's 92,144 (48.66%), Libertarian Jeff Scott's 767 (0.41) and Green Party Allen Smith's 371 (0.20%). McCready had 7,084 more absentee one-stop votes and 289 mail-in votes than Bishop heading into Sept. 10. Bishop supporters made up that deficit and then some. Bishop had 11,310 more votes than McCready on Election Day. Bishop thanked Trump, Pence and other supporters during his victory speech at W.H. Harris Lighting Company in Monroe. “The White House leadership and all our Republican and conservative partners who were there for us every step of the way because they all understood what was at

Bishop had a lot of support in Mint Hill, with more people voting for Bishop at Blair Road United Methodist Church, Mint Hill Masonic Lodge, Mint Hill Town Hall and Philadelphia Presbyterian Church. Bishop also had more voters at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Matthews and the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in South Charlotte.

ence,” Bishop said. “I think it puts us over the top.” Bishop also said he could see a clear surge in the number of his supporters. “We started off just six months ago in a race in which our opponent’s been in for two years,” Bishop said. “We’ve caught him and I believe we’ve passed him and I think we’ll see a convincing win tonight.” Trump endorsed Bishop heavily on Twitter in the days leading up to the election. Democratic presidential hopefuls Beto O’Rourke and Elizabeth Warren also took to Twitter to endorse Dan McCready. “Dan is running to flip a seat Republicans have held since 1963 – and today, you can help him do it,” O'Rourke tweeted. “If you’re in North Carolina’s 9th district, get out and vote to elect Dan and send a message that Democrats aren’t only coming for safe seats. We’re coming for all of them.”

due to a change in the subgroup definition. By contrast, college- and career-readiness rates stayed steady or increased in all subgroups in science for grades five and eight, with the largest gains recorded by Asian and white students. “Our community and board of education are focused on the college- and career-readiness of our students,” said Frank Barnes, chief equity officer. “We continue to make progress as we work to narrow the gaps in all subgroups.” Economically disadvantaged students showed a gain of 2 points, black students 1.8 points and students with disabilities 1 point. Scores for Hispanic students were unchanged from last year. The district’s graduation

rate also increased slightly, from 85.4% to 85.5%. Asian students increased by 2.2 points and had the highest graduation rate across student subgroups. Hispanic students increased by 0.5 points and black students by 0.3 points. White students have historically had the highest graduation rates, but this year their graduation rate declined by 0.7 points. Nearly 72% of schools met or exceeded growth expectations, and 73% received a school performance grade of A, B or C. CMS had 17 A schools, 53 B schools, 55 C schools, 39 D schools and 7 F schools. Sixty-five percent of schools maintained their school performance grades from 201718, and 31 schools (19%) improved from last year.

Week 4 Game Picks Independence (2-1) at Ardrey Kell (2-1) This is a very intriguing game for two teams looking to make early season statements. Cedric Gray and Kaci Seegars can cover a lot of ground on the AK defense and may need to against Indy’s air raid offense. Patriot running back Davion Nelson has helped make the offense go and could be the key. Winner: Ardrey Kell Country Day (3-0) at High Point Christian (4-0) The defending champ Bucs have come out playing really good football and have a star in running back Quentin Cooper. High Point Christian is also unbeaten, so something has to give. Winner: High Point Christian Wake Christian (3-1) at Covenant Day (1-2) The Lions earned Pete McSparin his first win last week in a 44-0 rout of Pine Lake Prep, which was a bit of an upset. They’d love to get another upset this week, but Wake Christian has been sound this season. Winner: Wake Christian

Myers Park (2-0) at South Meck (0-3) The Mustangs have put their first two opponents away before halftime, which lets them rest their starters and develop even more in-game depth. The Sabres have one of the most brutal early season schedules and are looking for any positives right now. Winner: Myers Park

SOCCER (continued from page 1A)

Central Cabarrus (2-1) at Providence (1-2) The Panthers will put the memory of their 63-3 loss to Myers Park behind them and move on to a more winnable game. Central Cabarrus won’t roll over easy though, and the Panthers could be headed for a second straight 1-4 start with Butler coming up next. Winner: Central Cabarrus Timberland (1-0) at Providence Day (2-0) The Chargers have looked really good in their first two wins and will look to take another step with their stud defenders Kedrick Bingley-Jones and Jacolbe Cowan. Timberland may be left wondering what hit them, but an upset would spoil PD’s hot start. Winner: Providence Day

Independence High School may not be able to beat Ardrey Kell. MMHW file photo Rocky River (0-2) at Harding (2-1) Rocky River more than hung with Mallard Creek for much of two quarters before the dust settled and the Mavs offense took over. Harding is one of the biggest surprises so far, and the Rams would love to get another win. Winner: Harding

over the summer to train in the heat and humidity. It’s not fun, but he thinks the conditioning is what separates his team and has led Sosa to a 42-7-7 record in two-plus seasons with the Panthers. “I tell the guys that teams can stay with you for a half because they’re in decent shape,” he said. “But it’s the second half where we’re going to come through because we do the type of training professional soccer teams do. It showed today.” The Panthers first got on the board at the 32:45 mark when Jackson Youngstrom came through with his first goal of the game. Youngstrom was the So. Meck 7 Player of the Year last season, when the all-state forward scored 40 goals and added 20 assists. He got the first goal started with a nice touch, and got the Panthers back to within one goal. But the Cougars subbed in defenders and packed the back lines to prevent much of the Providence attack. “It was probably about the 30-minute mark or so where I could see them getting tired, so I told my guys to keep attacking and good things would happen,” Sosa said. The Panthers had their chances. Youngstrom got free around the 10-minute mark and fired a shot at the goal which Charlotte Catholic keeper Andrew Gilles saved. Four minutes later, Matt Vetack launched a long shot that was deflected back out, but then came the chance Sosa and the Panthers had been waiting for. With a ball unsecured bouncing around the box, Gilles made a play at it in the

air but the ball got past him and right to the foot of Bennett Proctor, who deposited it in the goal with 2:16 to go. The end result was a tie, but it could ignite them as they kick off the So. Meck 7 schedule on Sept. 17 against Harding. “It’s a rivalry game and they used to be in our conference so we know them,” Sosa said. “It was probably the first game since I’ve been here that we were faced with that much adversity and came out of it. “Normally I tell my guys that a tie for me is like a loss, but this is the first time I told my guys a tie actually feels like a win. We could have tucked our heads and went home and let them keep scoring on us, but we didn’t and we fought. It was awesome.” Following the game, Charlotte Catholic coach Oscar Del Pino said Youngstrom and the Panther attack was among the best the Cougars will see all season. “It’s never fun to come up with a draw, but for what we showed - being down by two with not much time left and down a man - it kind of shows what we are as a team,” Youngstrom said. “Catholic is a good team and it was a hard game, but it was good for us and I think we’re still trying to come together.” The win, played on a humid night in a chippy atmosphere that saw multiple yellow cards, was sort of a playoff-like environment. It was also the type of win that could spur a big season for a team already ripe with expectations. “When you find yourself in those positions you have to do what you have to do,” Youngstrom said. “We only scored with two minutes left so we had to play hard the whole game, keep fighting and it happened for us. It was a good comeback for us and shows where we want to be.”

Instagram accounts you should know about By Karie Simmons @hardyboysrecordsandcomics

>> I feel like I see the same posts on Instagram every day... friends who seem to travel all the time and never work, influencers not-so-subtly plugging another product, pictures of my aunt’s cat, clothes from brands I can never afford and Kim Kardashian’s butt. If you can relate to at least one of these, it’s time to shake up your feed. Here are 15 Instagram accounts to follow if you want some variety in your life (sorry Kim):

@twentythirdandfifth

@stumptownath

@daphnessbakery

@thepizzapeel Seeing cheesy pizza, loaded nachos, burgers and tacos in your feed will make you want to lick your phone screen in the middle of the workday, so try to refrain. The Pizza Peel also posts food and drink deals and info about trivia nights and special events at their Cotswold, Plaza Midwood and Matthews locations.

#OMG Don’t forget about us! Folllow @mmhweekly for extra photos, news, community coverage and announcements.

@minthillevents This is a great account to follow if you’re looking for things to do in the area. Mint Hill Events posts regularly about live music, sports games and free lessons, pep rallies and other ways to enjoy all the town has to offer.

@daphnessbakery Have a napkin handy to wipe the drool as you scroll through Daphne’s Bakery. The Mint Hill bakeshop posts pictures of all their creations from pecan bars and cupcakes to s’mores brownies, muffins and coconut cream pies. Peek their custom cakes and cookies if you have a special event coming up. @hardyboysrecordsandcomics If you’re on the hunt for vinyls, following Hardy Boys Records is a must. Owner Dean Hardy posts classic records he finds at garage sales, antique malls and estate sales before they’re stocked in his shop, which is located upstairs in Home Styles Gallery in Mint Hill.

@sardismarketplace Sardis Marketplace is a 20,000-square-foot retail store in Charlotte with home décor, furniture, antiques, gifts, apparel and consignment items from more than 60 vendors. They post new and unique stuff, so you can browse before going in person. @renfrowfarms This account is a spinoff of Renfrow Hardware and focuses mostly on what’s grown on the family farm and then sold in the Matthews store. You’ll be the first to know when seasonal produce and flowers are in, so you can get them before they’re gone. see FOLLOW, Page 2B
