CHARLOTTE – Lured by the potential of winning gift cards ranging from $5 to $100, shoppers began lining up outside of the new Lidl as early as 11:20 p.m. the night prior to the grocery store's Dec. 4 opening. Once the doors opened around 8 a.m., the aisles were packed with people. Some were loading up shopping carts. Others carried reusable shopping bags. Many were carefully studying the prices. Latoya Thomas, of Mint Hill, left Lidl with some muffins after realizing there was a buy one, get the second half off deal. She attended the grand opening to compare prices to other stores in the area, such as Aldi and Food Lion.

Will Harwood, communications director for Lidl, said the grocery store offers hundreds of fresh, organic and gluten-free products at the best prices. Lidl makes quality goods at an obtainable price. While the majority of products are sourced in the U.S., the store has the ability to offer unique specialty items. Justin Vick/MMHW photo

have traditionally enjoyed covering town and city politics over state issues, but there are plenty of reasons why I'm a little more alert than usual heading into the 2020 election. For one, the boundaries for the N.C. House and Senate have changed. Most of Mint Hill, for example, will vote for a representative in House District 99 (Nasif Majeed's seat) and Senate District 40 (Joyce Waddell's seat). When I posted photos of the new legislative maps on Facebook, reader Larry Bumgarner noted how Mint Hill will be “washed away to east Charlotte.” He urged us to do a story about this. Admittedly, looking precinct by precinct in the Matthews, Mint Hill and south Charlotte areas was a bit like looking through a “Where's Waldo” book. South Charlotte residents that voted in Tariq Bokhari's Charlotte City Council district just a month ago will be represented by one of five state representatives and two state senators. Consecutive precinct numbers are strewn all over the place. But I'm up for the challenge. see VICK, Page 5A

Hunt, Brawley set for District 103 rematch by Justin Vick

CHARLOTTE – The 2020 election will likely include a rematch of the tightest N.C. House race from 2018. N.C. Rep. Rachel Hunt officially filed for reelection to her District 103 seat on Dec. 2 with members of Mecklenburg County's Democratic legislative delegation. Republican Bill Brawley filed the next day accompanied by Charlotte City Councilman Ed Driggs. Both may wind up with opponents in March primaries, as residents have until Dec. 20 to declare their candidacy with the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections.

Unofficial results from Election Day 2018 showed Brawley with a 52-vote edge over Hunt, which would have earned him the designation of being the only Republican to win a House race in Mecklenburg County. However, Hunt won the race by 68 votes after additional absentee ballots were counted. The battleground for the 2020 race has changed. District 103 includes fewer voters from Mint Hill. Only precinct 220, which votes at the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge, remains. The district includes all of the Matthews precincts, as well as nine precincts within Driggs and Tariq Bokhari's Charlotte City Council districts (precincts: 85, 90, 91, 96, 99,

103, 113, 118 and 227). Brawley, of Matthews, said this will be the fifth different district he's run in. He served eight years in the N.C. House. “It has changed so many times that almost every precinct that's in my district now has been in see REMATCH, Page 5A

CHARLOTTE – N.C. Rep. Nasif Majeed has made decisions over the course of his public service that have helped shape the city from the west side to the east side, but he finds himself in unfamiliar territory heading into the 2020 election. The freshman legislator's constituency now includes five precincts in Mint Hill, in addition to east Charlotte. “It's going to be new for me,” Majeed told Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly shortly before submitting paperwork for his campaign on Dec. 2. by going to neighborhood and town council meetings, as well as social activities. Majeed, a Democrat, captured nearly 82.4% of the vote to defeat Republican Joshua Niday in 2018. So far, no one else is running in the race. The deadline to apply is Dec. 20. During the 2019-20 legislative session, Majeed introduced 225 bills. He was a primary sponsor for nine of those bills, including the Hate Crimes Prevention Act (HB312), Agricultural Relief Act (HB855) and Augment Disabled Veteran Property Tax Benefit (HB945). “We had a meeting with the small town see MAJEED, Page 5A

“This store is bringing in more jobs to the community, as well as what we call the Lidl effect,” said Desmond Anyanwu of LIDL US Operations LLC. “Not only we'll be saving you money by shopping at Lidl, it will also be driving prices down in the area.” Charlotte City Councilman Tariq Bokhari was on hand to welcome Lidl to Charlotte. He helped cut the ceremonial ribbon to mark the store's grand opening. “I have never been in one of the stores before but I just walked in,” Bokhari said. “You're in for a treat if you haven't. The first thing you'll notice is an amazing smell coming out of that bakery.” Bokhari said shoppers will also notice how unique it is once they walk around inside. “It's very compact,” he said. “They really choose with great specificity what they put inside their stores, so the experience for you is one of a kind and uses your time wisely. The

pricing is pretty impressive, too.” Will Harwood, communications director for Lidl, said stores are designed to provide customers a fast and simple shopping experience in which they also save a lot of money. Lidl also touts fresh fruits and vegetables, organic and gluten-free products, European specialty items and an ever-changing selection of food and non-food specials.

of the back-and-forth bickering at the national level will trickle down. It'll be worse that usual with the Republican National Convention in town. I'm not a Democrat or Republican. Close to putting it all together Butler on right track after buzzer-beater losses by Andrew Stark andrew@cmgweekly.com

MATTHEWS – Every team goes through changes from season to season, and this winter the Butler boys basketball team is going through some serious challenges after losing five of their top six scorers to either graduation or transfer. The only holdover of that group – sensational junior point guard Jordan McPhatter – is doing his thing, but the other Bulldogs are having to grow up

in a hurry. “We’re young and inexperienced right now,” Butler coach Myron Lowery said following his team’s 55-54 loss to Charlotte Catholic at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge on Nov. 30. “I tell them that it would be better if we could get over some of this inexperience in practice instead of during the games. But they fight, they listen and they’re fun to coach. I think they are going to get better, although some of that stuff may need to come sooner than later.”

The Bulldogs lost on a shot from Catholic with about 10 seconds remaining on the clock. That came a day after the Bulldogs lost 53-52 to Vance on a buzzer-beater. McPhatter scored 18 points in the loss to Vance and joined 7-foot sophomore center Patrick Wessler (12 points and nine rebounds) in double figures. Those two dominated the scoring in the close loss to Catholic as McPhatter scored 26 points to go with six see BUTLER, Page 2B

Tough tests have Indy ready to defend its SW4A title by Andrew Stark andrew@cmgweekly.com

CHARLOTTE – Independence boys basketball coach Preston Davis has led the Patriots to a four-year run of at least 21 wins a year and the 2017-18 title. His Patriots wanted to quickly find out where they stacked up after losing all five senior starters from last season’s 22-7 conference championship team. In the opening week of the season, the Patriots played four games starting with North Meck, who throttled the new-look Patriots 79-55 in both teams opener on Nov. 19. Two days later, the Patriots got past South Meck and snuck past Northside Christian 55-54 the following day behind 19 points from Anthony Allen and

17 from senior Nygell Verdier, who is among the area’s most improved players. After falling by six points to unbeaten Davidson Day, the Patriots got a week off before taking on Concord First Assembly at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge on Nov. 30. The Patriots led by two at halftime, but couldn’t hold on as they fell 68-64 to drop to 2-3 on the season. “We just didn’t make enough tough plays,” Davis said following the loss. “I felt like a couple of times we could have taken some charges and I feel like there were times we didn’t get the rebounds that we could get.” The Patriots held a 20-10 rebounding margin at the half, but held just a see INDY, Page 2B

hat the hell did I watch on Sunday? Most of the casual fans out there honestly have no clue what’s going on during a Carolina Panthers football game with the complex blocking schemes, stunts from the defensive linemen or the difference between a 3-4 and 4-3 defense. Apparently this Panthers defense doesn’t know either. This season, there was little talk of the defensive switch, but the Panthers went from the traditional 4-3 defense to a 3-4, essentially adding another linebacker while taking away a defensive end. The only result I can see is that it’s taken the Panthers from a perennial top 10 defense to one that now can’t do anything right despite having stars Luke Kuechly, Shaq Thompson, James Bradbury, Mario Addison, Gerald McCoy and others on that side of the ball. The Panthers couldn’t stop Washington at all as Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice continuously gashed the defense with running plays right up the middle Sunday. Every time I watch a football game with my father, he talks to the TV when teams run right up the middle. That never works, he says. Well, against this defense it does. So does anything else you want to try. On the most critical play of see STARK, Page 3B

Rocky River boys basketball playing waiting game by Andrew Stark andrew@cmgweekly.com

The Rocky River boys basketball team has opened the season against some tough competition, but they have come out of it well with a 2-1 mark. They played at Harding on Dec. 3 after Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly’s press deadline, but won’t take the court again until Dec. 10 when they open conference play at Butler.

While there hasn’t been that much of a serving size, there has been some things to like with this season’s Ravens. In their 54-45 win over Mallard Creek on Nov. 26, they pulled away in the fourth quarter turning a two-point lead into a nine point cushion with a decisive 14-7 spurt. Christian Rudisill led the Ravens with 16 points while Stephon Richards added 12 and eight rebounds. Rocky River shot just 1-of-12 from

3-point range, and went 19-of-25 from the free throw line, but got the win with the help of Aaron Hall (11 rebounds), Nick Burns (seven rebounds, five assists and two steals) and TJ McNair (four points and six rebounds). The win got the Ravens back on track after they dropped their first game of the season to Olympic, 57-51. Burns scored 14 points and Hall added 10 boards in the loss. The Ravens (2-1) have had success despite

some early season trends including poor shooting with Rocky River shooting just 40 percent from the field, 27 percent from 3 and 64 percent from the line. On the positive, the Ravens are an athletic team that rebounds the ball well, especially from the guard spot with 6-foot-2 Richards averaging 8.0 rebounds while Hall grabs a team-high 9.0 per game. At any rate, the Ravens have a few unknowns, but lots of talent as they set to clash with Butler.

rebounds. Wessler poured in a career-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting and added 13 rebounds. Although those two have established themselves as the leaders of this year’s team, Lowery said there needs to be more balance going forward. “We can’t have that,” he said. “Yeah it’s good there are two players with 50 points, but we can’t have them have 50 of the 54 that we score. We have to get a little more scoring from everybody. They had opportunities, too, they just have to make plays.” Outside of McPhatter and Wessler, the Bulldogs combined to shoot just 2-of-17 from the floor against Catholic with only sophomores Chastin Gatewood and Amar Lane cracking the scoring column. Still, Lowery was pleased with the effort of guys like Moses Payne (five rebounds, five assists and three steals) and Carson Evans (five rebounds and six assists), who played well against Catholic, and sophomore Ty Black who scored six in the loss to Vance. And he’s proud of the fight of his team, who seemed dead in the water early in the fourth quarter against Catholic, only to claw back and even take the lead before the late 3-pointer dashed their comeback attempt. “It was 52-44, we called a timeout and scored 10 in a row,” Lowery said. “But it’s not only those plays at the end, it’s through the course of the game when we’re making mistakes, making too many turnovers and going 5-of-10 from the line. We had a lot of

34-32 advantage on the glass at the end. That, combined with shooting 6-of-23 from 3-point range contributed to the latest loss. But with the schedule Davis plays, a few losses to start the season is expected. As of Dec. 2, South Meck and Northside – the teams the Patriots have beaten – have combined to go 6-5 on the season while the three losses came against teams with a combined record of 20-1 on the season. “Five out of our first seven games are against ranked teams in our area,” Davis said. “In our first 13 games, we only have two home games, so one thing is we’ll definitely be battle-tested. It doesn’t get any easier because we play Ardrey Kell (Dec. 3).” The Patriots have had some bright spots, though. Allen has taken over as the Patriots leader, and the sweet-shooting senior is averaging 15.6 points per game and has made 11-of-26 3-pointers so far. Verdier averaged 2.6 points last season as a reserve but had thrived in the starting lineup this season and is contributing 13.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists per game while shooting 32% from deep. Butler transfer Jalen Hinton (8.4 points per game) and holdovers Omarion Bodrick (6.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.2 blocks per game) and De’Drick Givens (5.8 points, 6.2 rebounds) have provided much of the scoring punch this season. One potential problem for the Patriots could be 3-point shooting. Outside of Hinton, Allen and Verdier, the team has made just 1-of-14 3-pointers. Independence can offset that with size and rebounding with Bodrick and Givens inside. Still, with the Patriots' up-tempo style on both sides of the floor, they are going to give teams fits this year as they look to claim their third straight Southwestern 4A title. “We’re not far off, we just need to grow up a little bit still,” Davis said. “We have some gelling that we still need to do, but it’s tough when you feel like you’re so close and you let it slip away like we did (against First Assembly).” But Davis knows the tough schedule should only help what should be a tough conference season to navigate with the Patriots, Butler, Rocky River and Myers Park all talented. “We’ll be fine, I think, we just need to get tougher and clean some of this up,” Davis said. “We’ve played a lot of basketball and we’ve played quality competition along the way so far, so I hope it helps us in the long run.”

Sophomore Patrick Wessler prepares to shoot a free throw during Butler’s game against Charlotte Catholic on Nov. 30. Wessler, a 7-0 center, scored a career-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go with a career-best 13 rebounds. Andrew Stark/MMHW photo

opportunities, but we’re not making plays. We can make the hard plays it seems, but we can’t make the easy ones. We’re missing a lot of wide open 3’s right now. They’re just wide open and you’d think we’d make some of them.” The Bulldogs are still a work in progress at 2-3 on the young season, but Lowery has had great success at the school, winning at least 20 games in each of his five seasons at Butler. With the conference season approaching, he said this week is critical as the Bulldogs look to work out the kinks and get ready for what should be a nightly battle in the Southwestern 4A with Butler, Independence, Rocky River and Myers Park expected to challenge for the league title and

with Porter Ridge and Hickory Ridge not far behind. “We played two very solid teams the past two nights,” Lowery said. “That’s how our conference is. Everybody is good in our conference and everybody can beat us and we can beat anybody. These last two nights have proven it.” Butler only has one game this week with South Pointe, but open Southwestern 4A play with a trip to Myers Park on Dec. 10 and then they host Rocky River three days later. “We have a good foundation, but we have to get better at it,” Lowery said. “It's the little things at this point. It’s not brain surgery, but we have to do the simple things better and make open shots.”

Young Lions growing up on the court by Andrew Stark andrew@cmgweekly.com

MATTHEWS – When you only have two seniors and a freshman starter at point guard among the regular rotation, there are going to be some growing pains but the Covenant Day boys basketball team is figuring it out on the fly. A big chunk of the team’s early season has come from their talented freshman point guard and two senior starters.

Aden Holloway is the freshman, already locked into an offer from Syracuse before he played his first high school game. So far, he’s more than lived up to the hype. Holloway is averaging a team-best 16.2 points and 3.2 assists. He’s been great, but also very economical as he’s shooting 57 percent from the floor, 9-of-16 (56 percent) from 3-point range and 86 percent from the free throw line to start the season.

The seniors – guard Jacob Dahlberg and forward Hamidou Sidibe – have been the steady leaders for the Lions, who have started the season 4-2 after beating Queens Grant 6626 on Nov. 26. Sidibe is averaging 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while providing an athletic presence inside on defense. Dahlberg starred as the Lions point guard last year, but has switched more off the ball this season. Still, he’s averaging 5.4 points, 2.2 assists

and a team-best 2.8 steals per game. Junior Thomas Hailey (11.0 points, 6.2 rebounds) and Britt Anderson (7.0 points, 4.6 rebounds) round out the starting lineup for Covenant Day. The Lions had a tough matchup with Charlotte Catholic on Dec. 3 after Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly’s press deadline, but will next play Arborbrook Christian on Dec. 7.

SPORTS SHORTS Providence girls make statement at tournament CHARLOTTE – The Providence girls basketball team made a bold statement by defeating perennial power Providence Day 65-52 at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge on Nov. 29. Providence Day held a one-point halftime lead, but a 20-8 third-quarter spurt proved to be the difference. Yale commit Nyla McGill led four Panthers in double figures with 15 points. Cameron Mulkey scored 12 points, Eva Butler and Marlow Chapman added 11 points apiece and Amari Davis chipped in with nine points. The Panther defense also forced 27 turnovers and limited Providence Day to just 35% shooting for the game. Overall the Panthers (5-0) are averaging nearly 60 points per game, but the defense has allowed 50 or more in three of their past four games. The Panthers play at Porter Ridge on Dec. 6.

Covenant Day girls bball win as a team MATTHEWS – The Covenant Day girls basketball team hasn’t had a winning season in two years, but the Lions are looking to turn that around after beating Queens Grant 6523 on Nov. 26 to get to 4-2 on the season. The Lions defense held Queens Grant under 10 points in each quarter. Freshman Alexis Hailey scored a career-high 17 points to lead four scorers in

the game to that point, the Panthers totally lost Washington receiver Kelvin Harmon and rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins made an easy throw to put the game away for the time being. But Carolina wouldn’t go away. After Kyle Allen – more on him later – scored on a rushing touchdown and Jermaine Carter secured the first Panthers on-side kick in 90-something tries, they had light. Allen led the team to the 1-yard line, where the Panthers had 1st and goal late in the fourth quarter. They were down eight points, so needed to score twice, but it was almost as if they tried not to get the ball in the end zone.

double figures, including Eseosa Imafidon (career-high 13 points and 10 rebounds), Katherine Ashley (10 points) and freshman Hannah Keefer (career-high 10 points). That scoring distribution has been one of the keys to the hot start. Four different players have led the Lions in scoring in the past four games, making them much tougher to defend. Ashley leads the team at 8.5 points per game, but Caroline Cady (8.3 points, 6.2 rebounds), Viktoria McCue (7.8 points, 4.7 rebounds), Hailey (7.0 points), Imafidon (4.0 points, 4.3 rebounds), Keefer (3.8 points) and Cooper Clark (4.7 rebounds) have all contributed to the early season success. The Lions don’t start conference play until a Jan. 7 matchup with Providence Day, but for now they look as though they could be a factor in the CISAA this year.

NCSCA selects all-state soccer teams CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Soccer Coaches Association recently announced its annual all-state teams. The first play was a run up the gut to Christian McCaffrey for -1 yards. The second play was a run up the gut to McCaffrey for -1 yards again. Now 3rd-and-3, Allen threw the ball away to set up the game, 4th-and-goal with the season literally on the line. Win, we have a chance at the playoffs. Lose, those chances are out the window and this season, like so many lately, is wasted. With all that on the line, what did Allen do? First, he missed Jarius Wright wide open in the end zone. Next, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen an NFL quarterback do this, he retreated 25 yards with Washington linemen chasing after him before finally taking a sack. He never even threw the ball away. Some of you fans groaned that Allen was the franchise quarterback and Cam Newton should be let go when/if he

ever gets over his injury. I wrote about it and several people emailed me how Allen was the man. Doesn’t that sound silly now? I seriously thought this team had promise, even with Allen. Now they sit 5-7. They won’t make the playoffs. If they end with a losing record, which is likely, it will mark the ninth time in the last 12 seasons they’ve finished without a winning record. I want to think the Panthers are good, but teams that post three winning seasons over the past 12 years are no winner. With all the stars, all of the possibilities, all of the promise this team has fallen flat on its face again. It’s getting tiring watching it happen week after week. But to their credit, at least they’re creative in the ways they lose, I guess.
