Size may not matter with SouthPark high-rise by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com

CHARLOTTE – Dominion Realty Partners LLC has high hopes for the redevelopment of the Fifth-Third Bank branch on Fairview Road, across the street from SouthPark Mall. The firm envisions a building up to 185 feet tall with 1,500 square feet of non-residential uses on the ground floor and up to 325 multi-family units. The 1.8 acres could

include a four-level parking deck and 500 square feet of open space. The South Park Small Area Plan recommends office, single-family and multi-family uses for the site, capping residential density at up to 20 units per acre. This project calls for about 177 units per acre. The project's proposed height is also 65 feet more than what is typically allowed for mixed-use development projects, according This rendering shows a view along Fairview Drive. MATTHEWS – Matthews Alive will not happen this year. Lee Anne Moore, the event’s executive director, emailed sponsors and exhibits May 15 to break the news about her board’s decision to cancel the Labor Day festival. “It is an extremely difficult decision to make, but we feel that it is the most responsible one – and the best way to keep everyone safe at this time,” she wrote. “We hope to come back stronger than ever in 2021 and want you to be with us again when that time comes!” Organizers had planned to wait until June to make a deci-

sion, but realized the logistical issues would not change in the next few weeks. They felt there was “no sensible way” to work out social distancing and sanitization for the 100,000-plus people that flood downtown Matthews, Moore wrote. There are many touchpoints of exposure throughout the festival grounds — handrails, rides, bounce houses, vendor booths, seating, dance floors, parade floats and food items — all of which would have to be cleaned continuously during the four-day event. Matthews Alive dates back at least 27 years. It has served as a fundraising source for many see MATTHEWS, Page 4A

It's a cruel summer: Flip to Page 1B for a list of the region's most cherished family traditions that have either been canceled or postponed due to COVID-19.

CHARLOTTE – Summer is just around the corner, but the question remains: how and when will pools open? Phase One of Gov. Roy Cooper’s three-part plan to reopen North Carolina amid COVID-19 contains a provision that keeps swimming pools closed until at least May 22. Aside from that, there’s been little to no guidance from the state as to what happens next. (Cooper was expected to give an update on Phase Two mid-week, after our press deadline.) Even Jeff Gaeckle, president of Carolina Pool Management, feels like he’s out of the loop. His company runs 160 pools in the Charlotte region, from homeowner association to private membership pools, country club pools, and the pool at Queens University of Charlotte. Carolina Pool Management handles lifeguard staffing and management; pool and facility cleaning; inspections and onsite visits; and water quality and chemistry for these clients. Gaeckle said he’s under the impression pools can open once the state enters Phase Two, but he hasn’t received any direction on capacity, cleaning or how to operate them. “It’s a challenging place to be right now because we don’t have see POOLS, Page 5A

Brittney Thompson, Piedmont Thompson recalled entering Juliet Banning's kindergarten class at New Salem Elementary 13 years ago. Banning comforted her during the first day of school with the book, “The Kissing Hand.” Thompson is now pursuing a career in teaching. She recruited other students impacted by Banning for the tribute, including a member of the Class of 2033.

Jessica Guion, Forest Hills Guion learned from Jennifer Whitley how differentiation helps all students be successful. “Miss Whitley was the absolute best in making sure all of her students were successful according to their abilities,” Guion said. She mentioned how Whitley provided test prep for juniors, served as a club advisor and cheerleading coach, and advocated for public education. Katie Helms, Forest Hills Helms admits it took time to understand and love engineering. Tim Stegall taught her that challenges spark innovation. “He taught me that engineering was a great key, unlocking doors for students who wanted to innovate, create and discover,” Helms said. Helms will study mechanical engineering in the fall at N.C. State University. Kohen Goble, Marvin Ridge Goble's tribute video paid homage to “The Bachelor,” with teachers earning apples instead of roses. Advanced Placement History teacher Justin Jones won all the apples. Goble described Jones as a role model and confidence-builder. His classroom was educational and entertaining, as well as a place where Goble felt he belonged. Samantha Venturo, Marvin Ridge Journey's “Don't Stop Believin'” served as the soundtrack to Venturo's tribute to marketing education teacher Lisa Hall. She helped Venturo cope with not playing sports her freshman year and encouraged her to join DECA, which built confidence. “Miss Hall never stopped believing in me and I know she will continue to believe in anyone

Pamlico Capital donates $1M to COVID-19 fund CHARLOTTE – Pamlico Capital is committing $1 million to support the COVID-19 Response Fund. Foundation For The Carolinas and United Way of Central Carolinas launched the fund in March to support those most impacted by the pandemic. More than $18.5 million has been raised so far. The fund has issued nearly $6.5 million in grants to nonprofits, ranging from large institutions to smaller grassroots groups on the frontlines of the crisis. They've provided food, shelter, economic assistance and health care to people most in need. “Our entire team contributed to this effort and feels a strong commitment to invest in our community at this critical moment,” said Eric Eubank, a partner at Pamlico Capital. “These are unprecedented times, which we felt called for an unprecedented response from those of us who have the ability to make a difference.” Pamlico Capital is committing another $150,000 directly to nonprofits chosen by its employees, including Loaves & Fishes, Renaissance West, Freedom School Partners and E2D. “This fund was created to support people through our local nonprofits, which is critical in this time of desperate need,” said Laura Yates Clark, CEO of United Way of Central Carolinas. Donations to the COVID-19 Response Fund have ranged from a $2 commitment from an anonymous online donor to $1.3 million from Mecklenburg County. Visit HelpCharMeck.org to contribute to the COVID-19 Response Fund. Corporations and foundations wanting to donate may contact either Catherine Warfield at 704-9734515 or cwarfield@fftc.org or Clint Hill at 704371-6359 or chill@uwcentralcarolinas.org.

Nicole Cristy, Porter Ridge Words alone could not describe the impact math teacher Jennie Yearick had on Cristy, so the graduating senior wrote and starred in a music video set to the tune of “Baby” by Justin Bieber and Ludacris. Some of the rap bars include “You know she is amazing cuz she got my grades raising; And now my heart is breaking, because I have to graduate.” Samuel O’Grady, Sun Valley O'Grady presented the Academy Award of teaching to speech therapist Chris Antony. O'Grady has worked with Antony since the sixth grade. She not only has challenged and pushed him to make new friends and communicate better, but she has also supported him by going to after-school events and helping him get his first job. Kaitlyn Wesley, Sun Valley Wesley explained how Adam Tarlton's passion for teaching motivated students in English I, II and III classes. But his compassionate mentorship also resonated with her. She recited a message he'd tell students every Friday: “Have a good weekend, make good choices, wear your seat belts, bring back your fingers and toes, and remember you matter.”

Dates to Remember D-Day June 6, 1944

During World War II (1939-1945), the Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. During the first 24 hours 4,414 allied soldiers had lost their lives.

Flag Day June 14, 1777

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

U.S. Army Birthday June 14, 1775

Start of Korean War June 25, 1950

The Korean war began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. The Korean War ended in July 1953. In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in what many in the U.S. refer to as “the Forgotten War”. Almost 40,000 Americans died in action in Korea, and more than 100,000 were wounded. Today, they are remembered at the Korean War Veterans Memorial near the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Celebrating its 245th birthday this year, the U.S. Army was founded on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.

MINT HILL – The Mint Hill Board of Commissioners convened for only six minutes May 14 at town hall, but the meeting marked two major milestones for elected officials. It was the first time the town broadcast a commission meeting online and it was the first time they've convened since Mecklenburg County and North Carolina began restricting large mass gatherings due to COVID-19. Mayor Brad Simmons and the four commissioners sat at the dais with a seat in between each member. They approved the minutes of the March 12 meeting and eight items in the consent agenda, which consists of routine actions. “I'm really missing being out in the town, being around the people and going to our restaurants,” Commissioner Dale Dalton said. “Everybody please be careful and hopefully we can get over this very soon.”

nonprofit groups across the region. Hundreds of volunteers from nonprofits work alongside event volunteers and staff in areas such as trash collection, ticketing, drink sales, parade production and game management. The proceeds of the festival are then distributed to all of these groups. Last year, Matthews Alive organizers presented $147,716 in proceeds from the festival to nearly 40 area nonprofits. One of those groups was Boy Scout Troop 502, which has been participating with Matthews Alive as a source of fundraising for more than 15 years. Fundraising chairperson Cindy Schnall wrote in a May 15 post on the troop’s website that proceeds typically go toward scouts' dues, or in the case of next year’s

Commissioner Mike Cochrane has lived in Mint Hill his whole life, but he can't remember a time he's been more proud of what the people in town are doing to help each other. “I've seen a lot of people giving of themselves to help those in need,” Cochrane said. “That's something that I think this pandemic has brought out in a lot of areas and that's people helping other people.” Mayor Brad Simmons commended town staff, including Town Manager Brian Welch, Police Chief Tim Ledford and Fire Chief David Leath. He's worked with them on phone calls, emails, Zoom and occasionally in person. “Through this whole thing they've had to change the way they do business, but they have not stopped doing business,” Simmons said. “ We are still moving forward on the things we set out to do at the retreat, and I just hope the citizens realize what a great staff we have here in Mint Hill.”

proposed high adventure trip, toward trip fees. “We do realize that most of us enjoy working the festival as it is a lucrative way to pay dues, so we will try to explore some other fundraising opportunities to help scouts pay their dues obligations for the coming year,” Schnall wrote. Blessed Assurance Adult Day Care also has a long history of partnership with Matthews Alive. The nonprofit, which cares for older and disabled adults in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties, has been volunteering at the festival for over 20 years. CEO Nate Huggins said volunteers worked the game prize tents for many years, as well as the beverage tent. Huggins said he’s disappointed Matthews Alive won’t be held this year, but he’s not surprised. He had a feeling the event might be canceled after noticing many other fundraisers doing the same and Blessed Assurance made adjustments to its bud-

get in anticipation. Huggins said the lack of funding from Matthews Alive this year won’t be a huge loss to the organization. He believes canceling the event was the right decision. “I think those guys are very smart. They realize the health of our community is more important than an event,” Huggins said. “I’m quite sure if they made this decision, it wasn’t haphazardly made. They put a lot of thought into it.” Moore wrote in her letter that organizers realize the loss of the festival proceeds is not ideal for the nonprofit partners. They plan to highlight groups, their needs and their works on the Matthews Alive website and on social media over the coming weeks in the hopes that people contribute to them directly. “We will do all we can to make sure that the public is aware of what a cancellation means to our nonprofit beneficiaries,” Moore wrote.

No one spoke against the rezoning during the hearing. None of the council members expressed concern over the size or density of the project either. In fact, city staff is recommending approval. While the project exceeds density requirements, Pettine said it is consistent with the recommended mix of uses for the area. “As we're looking for an urban infill development in

this area, staff did feel that it was within good urban form and context,” Pettine said. Dominion Realty Partners is contributing $150,000 to the Charlotte Housing Trust Fund and $150,000 to support pedestrian improvements, including the SouthPark Loop Trail. The trail consists of a three-mile bike and pedestrian path around SouthPark that connects key destinations. A six-foot sidewalk will be added along Fairview Drive. Jeff Brown, an attorney representing Dominion Realty Partners, said the project helps the SouthPark area evolve from suburban office park with a mall to more of a town center. “All of this is trying to make the walkability a real critical feature of this development,” Brown said. According to the CDC, “There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water.” The water may be safe, but the state has yet to give any direction on how the owners of pool facilities should handle social distancing and the spread of germs on high-touch surfaces like lounge chairs and bathrooms. On May 11, the Weekly emailed a list of questions related to the opening of pools to the governor’s press office. Communication Manager Kelly Haight Connor responded with a link to a N.C. Department of Health & Human Services website. The page included Gov. Cooper’s executive order, frequently asked questions about the order, a chart titled “What Phase One Means for North Carolina” and other materials for businesses. There was no information on the website about opening pools. While companies like Carolina Pool Management wait for guidance from the state, so does Mecklenburg County. A spokesperson from the Mecklenburg County Public Health Department said in an email that the county anticipates more information and next steps from the state before the end of Phase One. When that

Councilman Tariq Bokhari, who represents the SouthPark area, also thanked Dominion Realty Partners. “We have to figure out congestion in this part of town,” Bokhari said. “This is how we make it more walkable, more livable – connecting live, work and play. We don't have a lot of solutions other than this right now. It is something that is very exciting. I am excited about the future of SouthPark.” The city council could vote on the rezoning as early as next month.

happens, an official opening date and guidelines for pools will be shared on the county’s public health website. “In the meantime, the county is continuing to perform pool inspections by appointment with social distancing measures in place,” the spokesperson said. A call to the Union County Coronavirus Hotline confirmed Union County is also waiting on information from the state about pools. When guidelines from the state are eventually released, Gaeckle hopes the responsibility to enforce them doesn’t fall solely on the lifeguards. He thinks it should be a cooperative effort between the owner of the pool and the pool management company. “Lifeguards have to watch the pool,” Gaeckle said. “They can’t be in a position to enforce social distancing. That’s a distraction to the lifeguarding component.” “They don’t have time to clean every lounge chair every time someone gets up,” he added. There’s also just not enough staff to handle extra tasks. Gaeckle said lifeguards usually train for their American Red Cross certification between March and June, but pools have either been closed or class sizes have been reduced to comply with state and local orders. “There’s a significant shortage of certified lifeguards at this point in the community as a whole,” he said. Regardless of how difficult it may be to manage the pools this year, Gaeckle said it’s important that they open. It’s just not clear right now, or at any level, how and when that will be. “It’s up in the air at this point,” Gaeckle said. “There’s a lot of gray to be determined.”

MONROE – Performing has always been a part of Union County resident Pete Lents’ life. It all started by telling jokes to his friends as a child and grew in high school with singing in the choir and playing in the band. College brought the performer out even more in Lents, and after graduation, he built a reputation as a diversified musician who traveled more than 100 times a year through the Southeast. When COVID-19 struck several months ago, though, Lents’ career and income immediately stopped. “It destroyed my economy, there are so many dates that have been scribbled off my calendar,” Lents said. “I have dates that I have in the future that have been scratched because We are out of they weren’t sure if they were going to be able to work with no signs of when have a show or not.” Lents says he has lost we are going upwards of $8,000 in to start again just two months because because our of cancellations. Efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 led to the postponement and cancellation of many of the region's most cherished family traditions. The pandemic soured St. Patrick's Day, kept the Easter Bunny at bay and sank Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Here's an update on major festivals that have been either canceled or postponed. BeachFest Matthews • Originally scheduled: May 8 to 9 • Venue: Stumptown Park in Matthews • Status: Postponed It's bad enough that hanging out at the beach is frowned upon. It's a double bummer that this two-day beach music festival has been postponed to Oct. 16 and 17 – plenty of time though to rehearse those shag dance steps.

Disabled Army vet creates radio station for veterans by Karie Simmons karie@cmgweekly.com

MONROE – Memorial Day is a time to celebrate and honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our nation’s armed services. This year, it will also signify the launch of Christian Warrior Radio, a platform dedicated to veterans, their spouses and those still serving in the military. After being furloughed from his job at I Heart Media, partially paralyzed disabled Army veteran Darryl Badley Jr. decided to use his newfound free time to create his own digital radio station for vets.

“On the same day we honor those who died, I wanted to birth something for those who are still here,” Badley said. Christian Warrior Radio goes live at 6 a.m. May 25 at www.CWRadio.net, on social media and through an app for Apple or Android devices. The station will be digitally broadcast 24/7 out of Badley’s home in Monroe and feature uplifting music, storytelling by veterans, sports, news and current events. There will also be programs that address issues many vets face, such as mental illness, benefits, finance and job searching. Badley, whose grandfather served in World War II, said he felt there was a

need for this type of programming, especially on the radio. He said many organizations provide resources for veterans, but there tends to be a lack of communication. He’s hoping Christian Warrior Radio will be a “one-stop shop” for veterans to get information and inspiration. “I wanted to create a platform where veterans could call in and get advice because it’s a veteran owned and run operation,” Badley said. “There’s a bond from veterans that we trust each other.” In addition to the music and programs, listeners who tune in to Christian Warrior Radio will hear a variety of bugle see RADIO, Page 3B

Charlotte Pride Festival • Originally scheduled: Aug. 1 to 2 • Venue: Uptown Charlotte • Status: Canceled The festival would have celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. July 4th Parade • Originally scheduled: July 4 • Venue: Downtown Indian Trail • Status: Canceled Indian Trail is one of the most patriotic towns in the region and one of the best at throwing a good old fashioned parade. So it's doubly disappointing the town canceled its signature Fourth of July event.

Mint Hill Madness • Originally scheduled: May 15 to 17 • Venue: Mint Hill Veterans Memorial Park • Status: Postponed The town's signature festival is a tradition going on 37 years, so it was a sigh of relief for many that the event would not be canceled but postponed to Aug. 6 to 8. Attractions include outdoor concerts and fireworks. Queen's Cup Steeplechase • Originally scheduled: April 25 • Venue: Mineral Springs • Status: Canceled The Charlotte Steeplechase Foundation was set to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. The silver jubilee would have offered top-notch tailgating and horse racing while raising money for the Alzheimer's Association. Speed Street • Originally scheduled: May 21 to 23 • Venue: Romare Bearden Park in Charlotte • Status: Postponed Speed Street is the festival that celebrates NASCAR's presence in Charlotte. It's the perfect way to prep for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It has been moved to Oct. 8 to 10 – just in time for the Bank of America Roval 400 on Oct. 11.

Heroes Con • Originally scheduled: June 19 to 21 • Venue: Charlotte Convention Center • Status: Canceled Heroes Aren't Hard To Find has organized its annual Heroes Convention since 1982. The comic book store is already booking guests for the 2021 show, allowing cosplayers more time to perfect their outfits.

Summer Pops • Originally scheduled: June and July • Venue: Symphony Park at SouthPark Mall • Status: Canceled The Charlotte Symphony traditionally performs a series of outdoor concerts that culminate with a Fourth of July performance. "Celebrate America" provided the perfect occasion for a picnic and fireworks.

Kaleidoscope Festival • Originally scheduled: May 16 • Venue: Downtown Waxhaw • Status: Canceled This spring arts festival usually draws about 5,000 people to downtown. Last year's event integrated food with a Taste of Waxhaw theme. Artists and restaurants will have to keep their distance for now.

Taste of Charlotte • Originally scheduled: June 5 to 7 • Venue: Uptown Charlotte • Status: Postponed Usually a kickoff to summer, the festival will now usher in fall. Save up your money to buy tokens for the event Sept. 18 to 20. Tokens can be redeemed for samples from dozens of Charlotte restaurants.

Matthews Alive • Originally scheduled: Sept. 4 to 7 • Venue: Downtown Matthews • Status: Canceled Organizers said they could not work out the logistics of social distancing for the thousands of people that flood downtown for the annual Labor Day festival. This is a huge blow for the dozens of nonprofits that split the festival's proceeds.

Wells Fargo Championship • Originally scheduled: April 27 to May 3 • Venue: Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte • Status: Canceled The golf tournament allows local fans the opportunity to support and watch up close the best players in the world. The PGA Tour canceled all events through May 10; however, pro golf will return to south Charlotte with the 2021 President's Cup.

and grew to include 15 million active users in 2018. Twitch now offers an assortment of content that people can view either by creating an account or through a browser window. Lents was introduced to Twitch a couple of months ago by a neighbor and has since created a channel where people with accounts can request a variety of songs. “You come into my channel and into my chat room and I can see who is interacting, who is in the chat and then people will type a song request into the chat or into the song streamer page and I will play it for them,” Lents said. “They can donate money if they want.”

Lents said requests range from AC/DC to Billy Joel. He performs live three days a week with shows on Monday and Wednesday starting at 5 p.m. and lasting for an hour or more. Friday’s show starts at 7 p.m. and lasts for two hours depending on the crowd and the number of requests. Lents recently finished a four-hour set where he raised $3,000 for Walk to Cure Arthritis for the Arthritis Foundation. His 5-year-old niece has juvenile arthritis. Lents gave the money he raised to the team that walked for his niece in the fundraiser. A challenge Lents faces on occasion is getting requests for songs he has never played before. He uses a technique he developed during his 25 years of performing to help manage the 300 songs in his catalog on Twitch. Over the years, Lents notices songs follow similar chord shifts and melody lines. Using the similarities, Lents takes attributes

in one song to figure out the progression in another. “You start learning songs really, really quickly,” Lents said of his technique. “And when someone asks you ‘Can you play that song?’ You say, ‘Let me listen to this really quickly’ and it gets easier and easier to learn new songs.” Lents’ musical career has taken him to Chicago and much of the Southeast. He currently performs in three acts. One is a Genesis tribute band while the other is a soft rock musical group called Thurston Howell. The latter has Lents wearing a sailor cap and a white party suit much like the group’s namesake all while performing songs by Michael McDonald, Hall and Oates, and Toto. Lents also performs in an act where he and another piano player take requests from the audience. “It is game of cat and mouse to try and get them to sing along,” said Lents of finding

The concerts on Twitch have not only supplied a place to perform and a way to financial stability, but also an oasis for his listeners during difficult times. “It is a great feeling because something I am doing is giving someone enjoyment,” Lents said. “Yeah, so it does make me feel good. … It’s a good experience and I am glad I can make people happy.”
