‘Little gem on the east side’ Stevens Creek Nature Preserve opening early fall by Karie Simmons karie@cmgweekly.com
OPEN THIS WEEKEND! 9AM - NOON

MINT HILL – After more than a decade of planning, public input, engineering and construction, Stevens Creek Nature Preserve and accompanying nature center will finally welcome visitors this fall. The preserve spans 281 acres owned by Mecklenburg County and includes a 12,000-square-foot nature center at 15700 Thompson Road in Mint Hill. It features
a network of pedestrian trails and exhibits that teach visitors about stream ecology and stormwater management. The plan for Stevens Creek preserve and nature center was put out in the public realm as early as 2007, but placed on the back burner once the recession hit. It was reenergized in 2015 and construction began three years later. Crews are working on installing the exhibits see NATURE, Page 7A

The Matthews Board of Commissioners held a special meeting July 20 with CMS Board of Education ChairwomMcCool an Elyse Dashew and district six Boardmember Sean Strain. In this meeting, we intended to get some clarifying information on Plan B-Plus Remote for the upcoming school year. Unfortunately, I left with more questions unanswered than answered. First, I asked about how many students have enrolled in the full remote academy. Neither board member had a clear answer. Second, I asked if our teachers were involved in the development of this plan. Again, I did not receive a clear answer. Chairwoman Dashew informed us that the district put out a survey to CMS staff, but that survey has been criticized for being confusing and not accurately portraying the plan. Third, I asked what lunch will look like in the first two weeks of in-school learning. Once again. I was given no clear answer. We were told of the possibility of having the students eat boxed (lunches) at their desks to ensure compliance with social distancing requirements. Fourth, I asked about funding of the arts and sports. Since games will not be played and events will not be held, it's only natural to assume that key sources of funding for these programs will be lost. Yet again, I was

CHARLOTTE MEDIA GROUP’S BEST OF THE WEEKLIES AWARDS ABOUT: MATTHEWS – Charlotte Media Group recognized several companies for winning Best of the Weekly awards on July 21 at Mario’s Italian Restaurant. Readers of Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly, Union County Weekly and South Charlotte Weekly voted for their favorite companies in upwards of 100 categories each. We published a list of all the winners in last week’s newspaper and published descriptions of all of the companies online. We also invited winners to an informal recognition ceremony. The ceremony was split into two events to avoid creating a large crowd. Participants wore masks, practiced social distancing and avoided the handshakes and hugs that normally take place at such an occasion. We saw some familiar faces, such as Laurie Horne, of Backyard Birds in Matthews, Betsy Lamb, of Nothing Bundt Cakes in Marvin; and Nicole Moore-Johnson, of Charlotte Kennels in Indian Trail. We also saw some new faces like Dr. Jack Miller, of Miller Animal Hospital in Matthews; Cassandra Tindell, of Mainely Cupcakes in Indian Trail; and Susan Blumenthal of United Faith Christian Academy in Charlotte. In between bites of brushetta and stuffed mushrooms, we talked to a few of the winners about how they’re operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ll share some of those stories next week. In the meantime, we’ve posted photos from the event on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. The handles for each account are @mmhweekly, @ucweekly and @southcltweekly.

INDIAN TRAIL – Imagine majestic views of sprawling mountains. Walks on untouched beaches as clear crystal waves fall upon the shore. Think about kayaking a meandering river as red maple and oak trees reach into the Carolina blue sky. Sound inviting? Well, a family from Union County experienced all that and more for just under $250. Morgan and Gregory Bartos and their four children joined the North Carolina State Parks Passport Program and visited the 41 state parks in a year’s time. The family, who lives in Indian Trail, was rewarded with gift cards and a care package from the state park system. “I always tell families you can do this,” Morgan said. “It’s not that crazy. It may sound overwhelming but isn’t that what life is? You set your goals and you work hard to get there.”

MATTHEWS – As a teenager in England, Jonny Sinclair and his friends loved playing soccer anywhere. A vacant field or parking lot, it didn’t matter. All they needed was a soccer ball and two goals and they were playing. Anything beyond some fun pickup games, though, was a different story. Sinclair’s high school had a team, but unlike in the United States, prep programs only
"It’s not about always paying to play for a good program. It’s more about being on a good team because you will work hard to be good." practiced once a week and games were more like scrimmages. If Sinclair and his friends wanted to get better, they knew the professional leagues were the only way to go. Those were by invitation only. “There were a lot of hidden gems that didn’t get a chance,” Sinclair said of the talent that
missed out. Sinclair’s math teacher, Andrew Mollitt, noticed the discrepancy and along with another staff member at the school created a soccer team that was free for local youth. They called themselves the Richmond Mavericks. The see SOCCER, Page 6A

INDIAN TRAIL – A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer faces misdemeanor charges after his 3-year-old son accidentally shot himself in the hand July 18. Timothy Justin O’Lear asked his son to get a pair of socks from a dresser drawer, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office, adding the boy was injured from an unsecured handgun his dad forgot was in the drawer. The boy's parents rushed him to Novant Health Matthews Medical Center for treatment. The sheriff's office said O’Lear routinely kept the firearm in a locked gun safe but recently relocated it to a sock drawer as an added security measure for his wife while he was at work. Sheriff’s detectives charged O’Lear with the Storage of Firearms to Protect Minors law, a Class 1 misdemeanor. “This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of securing firearms, regardless of who the weapon belongs to,” Sheriff Eddie Cathey said in a statement. “It only takes a second for someone to be seriously injured or even worse. We are very thankful this child’s injuries were not life threatening and we certainly appreciate the full cooperation of Mr. O’Lear and his family but are left with no choice, under the circumstances, to file this charge.”

given no clear answer other than an assurance that it would "be looked into." Fifth, I asked if CMS has considered setting up an IT hotline for the students if something goes wrong with their technology during remote learning. Both Chairwoman Dashew and Boardmember Strain pointed to the district's IT department. However, Boardmember Strain added that the best way students should deal with these issues is with their teachers. I cannot disagree more strongly with him on this issue. Our teachers are overworked as it is. We ask them to teach, to be counselors, and to be a point of contact for parents. In the midst of a global pandemic, how can we possibly ask them to also become healthcare workers and IT specialists? Teachers teach because they love their students, but we should not be putting them on the front lines of this crisis and making them do more work, and they all have to do it with no hazard pay. We need to advocate for our teachers more, and we need to do it now. This week I spoke with multiple teachers who were concerned about the reopening of our schools. One teacher told me that they were so concerned about teaching during the pandemic that they drafted their will. Though the district says that two weeks of in-person learning should be safe, we are still putting individuals at risk to contract the virus and instilling fear into our teachers. What type of learning environment are we providing for our students if our teachers are afraid to teach? We should all be concerned if their plan for the first two weeks is as vague as their plan for remote learning. It is becoming increasingly clear that CMS is not prepared for our teachers to return to work in two and a half weeks. CMS must answer these questions and the questions from the rest of the Matthews Board of Commissioners, and they must do so transparently. I am calling on CMS to publicly release their detailed plans for re-opening under Plan B-Plus Remote. In addition, the district needs to host a series of virtual town hall meetings to answer the questions of our worried parents. Silence is not an option on an issue as big as this. Lives are at stake. If a student didn't know half of the questions to a test, they would receive a failing grade. Why are we letting our elected school board members get away with only answering half of our questions? INDIAN TRAIL – The town has retroactively declared Grace Laney as Mayor for the Day for July 4. Mayor Michael Alvarez explained Indian Trail usually recognizes a Mayor for the Day ahead of the July 4 Parade, but the town had to cancel the event this year due to COVID-19. “We still wanted to recognize one of our residents for their contributions to the community, and I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving this year than Grace Laney,” Alvarez said. “It is heartwarming and inspiring to see someone so young do so much for others.” One of Grace’s favorite quotes, “She believed she could, so she did,” inspires her to work hard and help make
a difference for those around her. Here are some ways she has given back to the community: • Sewed and donated more than 1,000 masks to the community, including essential workers and first-responders. • Stuffed goodie bags for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Bright Blessings in Matthews. • Sewed and donated more than 500 pillows to animal shelters in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. She received the Gold Presidential Award in 2019 and 2020 for logging more than 250 hours of community service. Grace, a rising eighth-grader at Porter Ridge Middle

Mapping Union County's future
PARKS (continued from page 1A)
Leaders weigh three scenarios for 2050 development plan by Karie Simmons karie@cmgweekly.com
WAXHAW – Union County leaders are working to update the comprehensive plan and land use map to better reflect a clearer vision for the county’s future. Planning Director Lee Jenson recently presented the new plan, called “Union County 2050,” to the Waxhaw Board of Jenson Commissioners. The plan includes three scenarios developed by a coordinating committee of 10 county residents appointed by Union County commissioners. This committee is advised by five resident-led focus area subcommittees. The first scenario is based on the 2014 comprehensive plan’s land use map. It features employment corridors that run along major roadways like NC 75, US 74 and US 601 and a sizable agricultural area in the southern and northeast regions. This land is designated for “rural” residential uses, working forests and farms. The first scenario also has a mix of single-family and high-density residential (apartments, townhouses) near more populated areas of the county. Jenson said employment corridors were originally chosen to help solve the imbalance of jobs in the county. On the western side, Jenson said only 12% to 35% of people actually live and work in the county. “A lot of them are driving into Ballantyne or SouthPark or uptown Charlotte, so we got a lot of people that are leaving, not a lot of job opportunities for them to stay and work in Union County,” he said. The second scenario, or “Management Scenario,” includes these same employment corridors. “Our coordinating committee liked the idea,” Jenson said. “They recognize that Union County does have that job imbalance and they wanted to keep avenues for employment located in Union County open.” Agricultural areas get a little bigger in the Management Scenario, especially near Mineral Springs, south of Monroe and around Marshville where it is currently zoned single-family and high-density residential. This means more “rural” residential and open farmland and less high-density development. Jenson said the committee and public felt townhouses and apartment complexes shouldn’t be in unincorporated parts of Union County and may be more appropriate within the towns. Only a few high-density areas remain in the Management Scenario and they’re very targeted – mainly around major intersections and commercial nodes to encourage more mixed-use development. A unique aspect of this scenario is the transition zones aimed to fix “donut holes,” or areas of unincorporated county land completely surrounded by municipalities. Jenson said the county wouldn’t approve new development requiring rezoning in these areas. That should occur as part of an annexation into the adjacent town. This plan includes no new programs
This is the county's existing land use plan, showing agriculture or "rural" areas in green and residential development in yellow and orange.

Finally, this plan includes committhat would require tax increases, such as building new parks, but does increase ting resources to expanding broadband stormwater regulations and advocates internet into rural areas, as opposed to for expanding broadband internet into simply advocating for them. “Not just going out and telling people rural areas. “
The parks hold a special place for each family member, but one stood out the most for Morgan. “It has to be Fort Fisher,” Morgan said. “With it being on state property, there was no trash and the water is cool and clear. It was just a beautiful beach.” The family planned visits based on the time of the year by going to parks with water activities during the late spring and summer months. Parks in the mountains were better fits for the fall and early spring. Morgan said water bottles and an extra pair of warm clothes were a few of the essential items needed during the trips that totaled more than 6,600 miles. “You sort of had to just learn along the way,” she said of planning. Documenting their journey was also important as the family brought a camera to record hikes, mountain climbing and their canoe trips down the assortment of water ways. Morgan regularly updated a blog on their visits which totaled $246. Most of the cost went to recreational activities like renting canoes and paddle boats and admission fees but didn’t include gas or food. In comparison, the cost for a one-day ticket to Disney World and the company’s other theme parks in Orlando for someone 10 years or older is $109. A ticket to a Carolina Panthers game starts out close to $100. “That is such a great deal,” Morgan said of the state parks. “I am so passionate about this. I tell families they should go and do this. It is all right in our own backyards. They should take advantage of this. They really should.” The Bartoses liked how the parks kept their children excited by giving each one a passport. When they visited a new state park, a ranger would stamp the booklets to verify they have been there. After completing the 41 visits, the family emailed the state park representatives who then sent the care package that included a free annual pass and six gift cards to an outdoor store. The cards were used to purchase a tent for a trip to a state park in South Carolina this past May. Morgan said she hopes her children – Sophia (8 years old), Zoe (6), Henry (5) and Eva (2) – would build an appreciation for the state as well as the natural environment it offers. She also wants them to realize the importance of sticking with something they started. The months since finishing the program have been challenging as COVID-19 has dampened the family’s opportunities to visit the National Park System. The Bartoses have been to one in Ohio and have six more on their list in the coming year. The couple is expecting their fifth child in two months. When their daughter arrives, the family has no doubt the parks will be on their to-do list. “When you enjoy something, and you get used to it, there is a pull to go back out there and do it again,” Morgan said. Want to go? Visit www.ncparks.gov/passport-program to find out more about the passport program.

Highly recruited goalkeeper commits to Florida by Lee Noles Contributor
MONROE – Jayden Emmanuel was 8 years old when she made a big decision in her young soccer career. Instead of choosing to play forward and score goals, Emmanuel wanted to be the one stopping them. Becoming a goalkeeper proved a good choice as the junior at Sun Valley High School made a verbal commitment this month to the University of Florida’s women’s soccer program. West Virginia, Wake Forest and 21-time national champion UNC-Chapel Hill were among 17 schools that contacted Emmanuel, but the connection with Florida coach Becky Burleigh was big behind her decision. Burleigh has guided Florida to a national title and 14 Southeastern Conference championships. “I have never played for a female coach before,” Emmanuel said. “I could relate to her and
the openness she had was good for me. And the fact that I also could be open with her.” Academics and volunteering are just as important as Emmanuel’s on-field success. She maintains a 4.4 grade point average as a member of Sun Valley’s National Honor Society and BETA club. She was involved in a school event for underprivileged children and tutored middle and high school students. Outside of school, she annually goes with her parents, Darleen Cooper and Jonathan Emmanuel, to volunteer at a soup kitchen. “I always want to give back to my community whenever I can,” Emmanuel said. COVID-19 had Emmanuel developing creative ways to stay sharp after the lockdown stopped team sports. She created a workout to include hiking and biking. From the mental side, she watched videos of goalkeepers and read books on growth mindset and persevering. “It was different, but we had to make the most of what we could,” Emmanuel said.
The decision at 8 years old to focus on being a goalie started a quick ascent as Emmanuel played on teams with girls two years older than her. By the time she was 12, her teammates were 16-year-olds. “It was definitely a new experience for me. I was nervous at first,” Emmanuel said. “But I knew if I did it, I would get better and I knew I had to adapt to the harder shots.” This past year brought a great accomplishment but another tough decision. Emmanuel’s club team, Charlotte Soccer Academy, participated in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The academy’s purpose was to bring top programs in the United States together to develop players for the U.S. Youth National Team. The downside was the 10-month commitment. “I had to look at my options for the future and the college coaches come out to the (Development Academy) games,” said Emmanuel, who started as a freshman at Sun Valley.

opportunity helped Sinclair get to the cusp of playing in one of the highest leagues in England and eventually move into the coaching ranks. When Sinclair moved to the United States in 2005, he saw another group of talented players missing out. This time the cost proved daunting, as some families couldn't afford the thousands of dollars needed each year just to play in leagues. Extra coaching, game uniforms and practice attire can add hundreds more in expenses. It was then Sinclair thought about his former teacher and created a nonprofit that provides free soccer through the generosity of individuals and businesses. “It always stuck with me how much he gave to us and as I got older, I wanted to give back,” Sinclair said about Mollitt. “And I was looking for an avenue to do that here and I started the Matthews Mavericks.” The Mavericks launched in fall 2019 with children at any skill level playing pickup games on Fridays. There are no drills. No zealous coaching or overbearing parents. Just children playing for fun. “I will be there with all the equipment and everyone can play,” Sinclair said. “That is what I loved about soccer growing up. Less structure and playing with your friends … It’s all about enjoying the sport.” The ability of several children had Sinclair deciding to participate this fall in one of the most competitive leagues in the area. The Carolina Champions League features teams from the Carolinas that come from as far as Asheville and Spartanburg in addition to the Charlotte area. Although they are joining a top-flight division, Sinclair is keeping the Mavericks free. “It’s all about the process. The process is to enjoy soccer. Appreciate soccer. Love soccer,” said Sinclair, who will field boys and girls teams between

Walk to End Alzheimer’s will spread across the community CHARLOTTE – The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s will look different this year. Instead of hosting a large gathering, the Alzheimer’s Association – Western Carolina Chapter is encouraging participants to walk as individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks and trails across Charlotte on Oct. 17. The fundraiser will include three parts: - An opening ceremony will feature speakers and a presentation of promise flowers to honor the reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, all delivered to participants' smartphones, tablets and computers. - Everyone will walk in their own neighborhoods with their family and friends.
- The Alzheimer’s Association will create a promise garden in a “view only” format that participants can drive by on walk day to honor all those impacted by Alzheimer’s. The event attracts thousands each year to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease – the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 16 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In North Carolina, more than 180,000 people live with the disease and 479,000 people serve as caregivers. Visit www.act.alz.org/charlotte or call 800-272-3900 to sign up as a walker or team captain or to learn more about becoming a sponsor of Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Charlotte.

“I had to sacrifice my high school soccer to get that full training.” The U.S. Soccer Developmental Academy stopped operations because of what was stated on its website as a financial situation brought on by the circumstances from COVID-19. The change had Emmanuel’s club switching to another development program. It also means there is a chance she plays for the Spartans in 2021 if restrictions from the pandemic are lifted. “It was so much fun playing for my school and building bonds,” Emmanuel said. “I enjoyed the camaraderie I had with the people I go to school with.” Fall sports status The N.C. High School Athletic Association announced July 15 that the start of fall sports has been delayed until at least Sept. 1. Phase 1 of the NCHSAA's summer conditioning and workouts will continue for now.
the ages of 8 to 10 years old. “It’s not about always paying to play for a good program. It’s more about being on a good team because you will work hard to be good.” Sinclair is surrounding himself with like-minded coaches. Nicolas Sosa played professional soccer and was the conference coach of the year this past fall at Providence High. Ian Dargavel has directed soccer camps throughout the Southeast and coached from the recreational to Region 3 levels. “You are going to be surrounded by people who have a passion for the game,” said Sinclair, who has coached collegiately at the Division 1 level. The support from businesses and individuals is another important factor. Dr. Greg Abrams has played in adult leagues with Sinclair for several years and helped kick-start the program by donating money for soccer balls and jerseys. Businesses and families have also joined to support the competitive team. “The support is personally rewarding for me,” Sinclair said. “The parents who I have known for years and have stayed by me means a lot. It is now up to me to repay them by helping the kids enjoy the game.” The children’s enjoyment is more important to Sinclair than wins or titles. The belief derived from his father, John Sinclair, who despite being an avid athlete himself, never pressured his son in soccer. Sinclair takes the same attitude and honors his father, who passed away in October from cancer, by giving out an award each Friday which he calls the Cappy award. The hat goes to a player who isn't the most talented but exemplifies the joy for the game. John Sinclair’s nickname was Cappy after he fell asleep with his hat on in his first day in the military. “Looking back at the time I didn’t realize until I got older, but he was my biggest idol,” Sinclair said. inside the nature center. Once finished, Stevens Creek will be the county’s fourth nature preserve, joining Reedy Creek, Latta and McDowell. “It’s been good steady progress,” said Chris Matthews, county park and recreation division director of nature preserves and natural resources. “We had some weather slow-ups and of course, COVID slowed things down. We had a really wet year last year that slowed down the building process.” Protecting a habitat The preserve is located along Stevens Creek, which is considered to be a critical habitat for the federally endangered Carolina Heelsplitter. According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the creek provides habitat for one of only six known populations of this rare mussel. However, it doesn’t live there anymore due to erosion caused by development and farming. “The county bought the property to kind of protect that habitat in case it was ever able to make a comeback,” Matthews said. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services restored the stream by making it curvier, which will allow it to better handle large rain events and prevent future erosion. “You could have driven a school bus through there,” said Kristen Haas, manager of Stevens Creek Nature Center. “It was really deep. It was really wide and the trees were falling.” Crews also built a bridge over the creek that connects the nature preserve and center to four miles of existing pedestrian trails owned by the county. Matthews said the stream restoration project will play a large role in the education at the nature center. “Part of our exhibits are going to talk about that project and that process,” Matthews said. “Our environmental educators will also be able to take residents down to the restored stream and they’ll learn how streams get fixed and why.” Thoughtful design Naturalized berms and rain gardens serve as just a few of the integrated educational tools to help teach visitors about water cycles and creek health. Even the parking lot is a mixture of gravel and pavement to help curb runoff. The nature center is the gateway to the larger site, which is rich with native grasses and wildflowers. “We’ll have three seasons of color and we’re not going to mow it,” Matthews said. The entrance path to the building floats over rain gardens, immersing the visitor’s senses with experience of water. Matthews said the walkway is considered a public art piece and was created by an artist from Connecticut. “I think it’ll be really cool once everything

grows in,” he said. “It’ll take about a year for all the plants to come in. It’ll be a pretty neat little gem here on the east side.” Rain chains carry water from the roof of the nature center down into a collection system that filters it through various water features around the site. A living plant wall greets visitors before they walk inside to see a welcome desk, gift shop and map of the county’s watersheds – also a public art piece. Educational exhibits include a 5-foot-tall model of a Carolina Heelsplitter and an Augmented Reality Sandbox – a hands-on sandbox exhibit combined with 3D visualization applications to teach visitors about elevation and water flow. There will also be an aquarium that looks like a stream with water flowing through tanks with fish, turtles and other species found in Stevens Creek. Visitors will be able to see how the stream exhibit works through a window into the pump room. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and lead educational programs. The nature center has community meeting rooms, youth classrooms, offices, a technology and education center as well as a warming kitchen and outdoor fire pit. Several garage-type doors can also open on both sides of the building. “On a really nice day, you can kind of open everything up and get a nice breeze going,” Matthews said. “We’re trying to bend this idea of an indoor-outdoor space.” Matthews said county staff toured nature centers across the country to gather innova-

tive ideas for designing Stevens Creek. One of the most unique features they came away with was bird-friendly glass that reflects on a lightwave birds can see. This way, birds will not injure themselves by flying into the nature center’s many windows. “We’re here and we’re impacting the environment,” Matthews said. “We have to give back. We can’t just take all the time.” A home for history In addition to exhibits that teach visitors about the surrounding environment, the nature center also houses a collection of bivalve mollusks and freshwater fish for the county’s natural resources team to curate and take care of. The collection includes an estimated 75 species of fish and 40 species of mollusks gathered across the county and state by Ed Menhinick, a professor at UNC Charlotte. Some species were collected in the early 1960s and are no longer alive. “It preserves the natural history of what we have in Mecklenburg County, or what we used to have,” Matthews said. Part of this university-caliber collection is also housed at Reedy Creek Nature Center. “It’s very unusual for a parks and rec program to have this,” Matthews said. The idea for Stevens Creek Nature Preserve and center has been a long time coming. Haas hopes that once it opens in the fall, it creates a sense of wonder for visitors, sparks curiosity and prompts questions. “I’m hoping they feel a connectedness to
the land and water,” Haas said. “Their actions have impacts and they can have really positive impacts.” “It provides an opportunity not only now, but for the future, to take some of these places with really nice forests, really nice woods and a stream that’s been restored and make it a really special place,” Matthews added. Want to go? Stevens Creek Nature Center, located at 15700 Thompson Road, Mint Hill, will be open to the public for free starting sometime in the fall. A grand opening date has not been announced. THE EVENT:

Boyfriend makes marriage proposal during dance lesson by Colleen Boyle Contributor
Jarryd Boyle had made a dance lesson reservation for July 11 at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Columbia, S.C. as a birthday gift for his girlfriend, Megan Michalski. Jarryd and Megan met at Clemson University and had continued to date long distance for an additional 2 and 1/2 years while Megan finished college and Jarryd had moved to Des Moines, Iowa to work for Principal Financial as an actuarial associate. Megan was looking forward to spending the weekend with Jarryd and attending their professional dance lesson. Megan, who danced for years, loved the thought of dancing as a couple. Unbeknownst to Megan, Jarryd advised the Dance Studio that at the end of this dance lesson would be a proposal of marriage. Jarryd arranged for a photographer to be there. When they arrived, the dance studio advised Megan and Jarryd that they were having an event there later that afternoon, the photographer had come early to warm up, and asked if he could take photos of them in order to get the right lighting and angle shots. Megan and Jarryd said “Of course.” The instructor, Brittany, choreographed a dance where toward the end, Megan would walk away from Jarryd for four steps and then turn around and walk back. On the last dance, Brittany told Megan and Jarryd to remove their masks so the last dance could be more intimate. Sure enough, Megan walked away from Jarryd for four steps, and when she turned around, Jarryd was on his knee with the ring, uttering the words, “I love you! Will you marry me?” Megan’s response “A thousand times yes!” Arthur Murray Dance Studio really was extraordinarily helpful in assisting Jarryd with his surprise proposal! They worked on choreography that would give him time to drop to his knee, came up with a storyline for the photographer and had champagne waiting for them after Megan said yes. The couple is dreaming about a 2021 wedding.
Times have changed, our mission has not. Caring professionals dedicated to quality services in a community where our Members live longer, healthier and happier lives. The Weller Life.

The Joedance Film Festival not only showcases local movies for community enjoyment, but also raises money for the Levine Children’s Hospital. Premier Property Solutions has been among the charity’s supporters. Photos courtesy of Bert Woodard
Joedance Film Festival is going virtual this year CHARLOTTE – Joedance Film Festival is making a strategic pivot in wake of COVID-19 and will reimagine the 11-yearold event as Joedance Virtual Film Festival on Aug. 6 to 8 rather than the traditional venue. The plan is to return to Charlotte Ballet for the 2021 festival. The COVID-19 pivot was necessary, according to Diane Restaino, Joedance founder and president. “Part of the magic of Joedance is the sense of community and ambiance of our nights at the Charlotte Ballet,” Restaino said. “But there is no question that our priority right now is the health and well-being of our filmmakers and audience. Having this year’s festival virtual is the right thing to do, and I think it will be its own ‘reimagined’ success.” Joedance Virtual Film Festival will livestream Thursday and Friday from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday, for student films, 1 to 2 p.m. Tickets, which start at $10 (students) and $20 (regular) and $70 (all-access passes), can be purchased through www. joedance.org/tickets. “Transitioning to a virtual festival was a difficult but necessary choice for us to make as we are committed to keeping our patrons, volunteers and staff safe. We are excited to bring Joedance to your living room or driveway this year and continue to provide a platform for supporting filmmakers as well as the important work we do with Levine Children’s,” said Joedance Festival Manager Ben McCarthy, who has experience with a variety of film festival formats.
Joedance honors the memory of Joe Restaino by raising money and awareness for pediatric cancer research at Atrium Health’s Levine Children's through an annual film festival featuring directors, producers, writers and actors who share a connection with the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. The family chose a film festival to honor Joe Restaino because of his love of movies. Joedance supports research and clinical trials for pediatric sarcomas, blastomas and brain tumors. To date, Joedance has donated more than $205,000 to Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s in 10 years, including $35,000 in 2019. Want to help To donate to Joedance, visit www.joe dance.org, or mail contributions directly to: Joedance Film Festival, 301 W. 10th St., Unit 407, Charlotte, NC 28202.
