Proposal offers 'unbundled' senior living Cypress Senior Living wants to add a new form of senior living to Matthews. The six-acre site, located between the new Lidl store and a church at 9832 Idlewild Road, is zoned for residential uses. The firm is seeking rezoning to allow for a single building with 128 apartment units, leasing office, amenities and 144 parking spaces. A representative with

Cypress Senior Living said during the Oct. 12 public hearing most people are paying on average $3,000 a month for senior living in Matthews, because they're getting bundled services they may or may not use. Cypress Senior Living is unbundling the services and providing a more affordable base rate. Extra services can be obtained à la carte. Town staff compared the

project's 19 units per acre to multi-family communities, noting the average is 12.75 units per acre. Collin Brown, who represents the development team, doesn't characterize the project as multifamily as the average independent living unit has 1.1 residents vs. 1.9 per multifamily unit. Brown said there will be less traffic and no school impact. Commissioner Ken Mc-

Cool had concerns about the height of the building, which is proposed for 57 feet high. Commissioners Renee Garner and John Urban wanted to see visuals of the project. “It still doesn't need to look like Anywhere, USA,” Urban said. “It needs to take into context Matthews.” Commissioners will reopen the public hearing for the project on Nov. 9.

Bill Brawley recalls a point in 2015 when leadership within the N.C. General Assembly sought to change the way the state dis- Brawley tributes sales tax revenue, potentially costing Mecklenburg County upwards of $65 million in 2016. Despite these being members of his political party, Brawley could not in good conscience support a measure that would hurt his district. Brawley, who chaired the N.C. House finance committee at the time, fought the measure. He found an ally in Gov. Pat McCrory, who intended to veto the bill if it reached his desk. They were successful. “I did not have to have enough votes to defeat the bill,” Brawley said. “I just had to have enough votes to sustain the veto.” Brawley served four terms in the N.C. House. He was edged out of his District 103 seat in 2018 by Democratic challenger Rachel Hunt. He’s running again on the premise of good policy that benefits his district. Stopping the redistribution of sales tax was a huge win for Brawley in 2015, but his most significant legislation was the Strategic Transportation and Investments law, which accelerated the funding of several highways in the Charlotte region. The 2013 bill prioritized district, regional and state transportation projects based on factors such as reducing traffic congestion and improving safety. This removed politics from the funding formula. “The idea of STI was to build the roads where they needed to be built and do it with data,” Brawley said. Brawley has a reputation for having a deep understanding of issues and clarifying policy. But his legislation has a tendency to take on the theme of stopping people from getting picked on. This dates back to his first bill in 2011, which allowed citizens to recover legal fees if they successfully sued a municipality. He sponsored a bill that would prevent women from facing prostitution charges if they were forced into having sex against their will. He made it easier for child victims of trafficking to get help from the Department of Health & Human Services as abused children. He’s also worked to keep taxes in check, repealing the privilege license

Like any newly elected representative, Rachel Hunt spent most of her first term in the N.C. House of Representatives learnHunt ing the ropes, and there was a lot to learn. For starters, she didn’t realize the party that controls the house, which is currently Republican-led, has more influence in what bills make it through. “I naively thought any good bill would come to committee,” Hunt said. That wasn’t the case for Hunt, a Democrat who pushed for education funding, environmental protections and animal rights. Hunt said she had trouble getting any of the bills of which she was the primary sponsor even heard in committee, let alone voted on the floor. Hunt promised that will change if she’s reelected to a second term. “Now that I know how things work and which legislators I can talk to and would be interested in my issues, that makes it easier,” she said. Hunt and her husband, Olav, live in Charlotte’s Raintree neighborhood and have two children, Katia and Jonas. She has been in the House District 103 seat since 2018, when she beat incumbent Republican Bill Brawley by 68 votes. The district covers Matthews, Mint Hill and parts of south Charlotte. Hunt will battle Brawley for the position again on Nov. 3 but said she’s not worried. She feels confident that her wants are in line with most residents in her district. “I feel like I’m just like many of my constituents,” Hunt said. “So, I relate to them and they relate to me. We have a good relationship and that’s going to continue and the fact that I’m willing to listen to everyone, no matter what party they’re in.” Like her father, former N.C. Gov. Jim Hunt, Rachel Hunt is an education advocate. The first bill she wrote in office (HB 428) would have allocated funds to put more full-time teacher assistants in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms. Hunt said the idea was that teacher assistants would allow teachers to focus more on kids instead of paperwork, which would boost K-3 reading and literacy programs. Hunt’s passion for education comes from her mother and grandmother, who were both teachers. In the House, she wants to focus education investments on improving facilities,

Ridenhour touts experience by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com

Matthew Ridenhour remembers a point in 2018 when his colleagues on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners wanted to increase teacher pay. He pored through the county budget find- Ridenhour ing opportunities to carve dollar amounts here and there so commissioners would not have to raise property taxes to pull that off. For every win in which he saved taxpayers money or helped constituents enhance cherished green space during his six years on the commission, he can point to several smaller wins that are just as meaningful. This includes helping constituents navigate the appeals process following a revaluation or connecting someone to the appropriate staff member when a tree fell on their backyard fence. “The fact that I helped get someone’s fence repaired is not going to make the papers,” Ridenhour said, “but I can rest well enough at night knowing I can make a difference in someone else’s life. That’s what I signed up to do.” Two years removed from his last term as a commissioner, Ridenhour is running against political newcomer Laura Meier for the District 5 seat held by Susan Harden. Ridenhour said his experience sets him apart in the race. He has the experience to know who to call within county government to get things done. You could also plug him into the commission’s economic development committee without much explanation. “Right now, there’s really not a lot of time for a learning curve,” Ridenhour said. With budget season on the horizon, Ridenhour said pandemic recovery will be a priority for the new board. Commissioners will need to talk about what

4 things to know: Matthew Ridenhour • Since joining the Marines in 2001, Ridenhour has volunteered twice for deployments in Iraq. He served in security-related roles in both deployments. • In parting words to the county commission in 2018, Ridenhour not only mentioned the core values of the Marine Corps, but the history buff also paraphrased Founding Fathers Alexander Hamilton and George Washington. • He helped preserve Butterfly Park after residents in the Sedgefield community told him Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools intended to sell the land to a developer. He’s helped enhance Midwood Park and a greenway in the Lakewood community. • Ridenhour successfully campaigned against a quarter-cent sales tax to fund the arts that the public shot down in the 2019 election. He also fought against proposals to use taxpayer dollars to upgrade Memorial Stadium for a Major League Soccer franchise.

recovery looks like as the community tries to return to work, overcome the challenges of remote learning and strive for improved mental health. Ridenhour, who works as a risk manager, believes he would have shaped the county’s response to COVID-19 by pushing to get more information to the community early in the pandemic and advocating for more risk-based decision-making to protect public health. He believes commissioners can break silos by engaging more consistently with other leaders rather than waiting until there’s a pandemic or impending school bond to build consensus. He also sees more opportunity to involve the public through social media posts, newsletters and town halls. “Elected officials have a responsibility to engage their constituents,” Ridenhour said.

id you just start singing the theme song from the 80s/90s sitcom “The Golden Girls?” If not, I bet you are now. Oh, how I loved that show. I grew up watching those four silver-haired ladies go through one life adventure after another and it really made me excited to grow older. I still watch it to this day and laugh out loud at least twice an episode. What I loved most about that show was the friendship those retired roommates shared. Three of them were widowed and one of them was a divorcee who still had to deal with her toupee-wearing ex-husband. I can’t be certain but part of me believes that my love of newspapers was born from that show because they often placed personal ads and phony funeral announcements in

their local Miami-based publication. Either way, the show gave me a chuckle and still does to this day but the theme song was quite possibly the best part. I do have a point to this, and it’s not about silver-haired ladies with impeccable fashion sense living in Miami back in the late 1980s. I want to say thank you all for being a friend, truly. We launched our Voluntary Pay Program nearly four weeks ago and I was, honestly, quite hesitant about it. I know the state of our local economy and the struggles that families are dealing with in this moment. This year has been hard and that’s an understatement. So, when I decided to launch our VPP, I did so with some trepidation. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect as far as the response we might receive from the community. To say I’ve been humbled is an understatement. Between the letters we’ve received along with the many donations from loyal readers like you, I’ve never felt so honored to be a part of such an incredible community. I’ve read the notes that you all have sent many times

over. I’ve saved them all. Some of them made me tear up and others gave me much needed laugh. Thank you for taking the time to write, it really means more than you know. For those of you who took the time to write a check or contribute online, and for those of you who are still considering doing so, I don’t know how to thank you enough. We will be closing out our official Voluntary Pay Program at the end of the week, but don’t let that stop you from continuing to write us letters. We really enjoy hearing from you. If you’re still considering making a contribution, you have time to do so by visiting the link below or mailing us a check. Lastly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for being our friend. A slap in the face Biden’s halfhearted speech was an insult to state voters by Pat McCrory Former N.C. Governor

Joe Biden’s cursory visit to Durham on Sunday was a grave disappointment. Between its shocking brevity and its heavy reliance on stock messaging, it sent a clear message that Biden doesn’t care very much about North Carolina voters. The people who showed up for the event in person – as well as those who tuned in to watch Biden’s speech on television or online – spent more time waiting for the candidate to appear than Biden spent behind the podium. After keeping his audience waiting for about half an hour, the former vice president only spoke for just over 15 minutes. That’s less time than it would have taken someone just to drive to his speech from Raleigh. And it wasn’t as though Biden came prepared to speak directly to the interests and concerns of North Carolinians. For the most part, his speech was a collection of well-worn talking points that he routinely uses when speaking to a national audience, with the words “North Carolina” sporadically – and generically – thrown in. Rev. Tony: Rotary's Four Way Test has many applications Tony Marciano Reverend

T

he Four Way Test has been a part of Rotary for over 70 years. The author is Herbert J. Taylor, who wrote the test, not for Rotary, but for a troubled business he had taken over. In 1932, Herb took over a nearly bankrupt cookware manufacturer called Club Aluminum Company of Chicago. The company owed $400,000 more than its total assets and was barely afloat. He took an 80% pay-cut and invested thousands

of dollars of much needed capital into the company to cover operating expenses. Looking for a way to turn around the culture of the company, Herb searched for a means to inspire his employees to build a better connection with customers. Herb first wrote a statement of the things employees “should think, say or do” in their business dealings. The Four Way test. Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and better friendships? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Many were skeptical of the Four Way test. One colleague told Herb that if he followed the maxims, he

impression that some low-level campaign staffer simply penciled the name of our state into blank spots in Biden’s stock stump speech. It was also obvious that Biden was more interested in speaking about Scranton, Pennsylvania and his home state of Delaware than he

would starve to death. Others dismissed the test as naïve and simplistic. Nevertheless, Herb made the Four Way Test the basis for decisions large and small at Club Aluminum. He promoted it among all of his employees. From advertising, to production, to sales, all company actions were measured against the Four Way test. Just five years after Herb instituted the Test and still deep in the Great Depression, the company’s indebtedness was paid off. For many years into the future, the firm earned millions in profit. In 1942, Rotary adopted it as part of its culture. I’ve had a few instances where I’ve had to implement the Four Way Test. More recently was on a phone

was in mentioning anything that might have been relevant to the Tar Heel State. Apart from a few obligatory shout-outs to local Democrat politicians and candidates, Biden didn’t address North Carolinians in a remotely meaningful way until about 10 minutes into his speech. When he did, he devoted less than one minute to a vague commendation of black-owned businesses on Parrish Street before pivoting back to his standard messaging.

call with a colleague. He was talking about another organization that had two changes in leadership in a brief period. All he said was that the first leader only lasted a short time. I wanted to correct him (note my personality in the DISC is High C – Correctness). While he was correct, it was a lack of information. I knew more of the background of the story and wanted to make myself feel important by pointing out the error of his ways (sounds like a page out of the Dale Carnegie book – “How to Win Friends and Influence People”). Let’s look at it through the eyes of the Four Way Test. Is it the truth? Yes. I had information that was not being disclosed. Is it Fair to all Concerned? I felt it was fair. He needed to know the full

Considering that North Carolina’s “Black Wall Street” has been the subject of extensive academic attention, it doesn’t seem like too much to ask for Biden to have one of his staffers spend, say, 15 minutes putting together a short list of talking points that might have allowed the candidate to sound like he at least had a passing familiarity with the subject. It would also have been nice if Biden had discussed the double-whammy that North

back story. I was sure about that. Would it build goodwill and better friendships? No. I knew that. Is it beneficial to all concerned? No. I would make myself feel superior and make him look inferior. I would not be building a bridge in our relationship. Instead, I would build walls with a moat filled with alligators. I never said anything. I listened to his comments and we continued on with the conversation. Point three of the Four Way Test has helped me pause and not give into the temptation of being right. It’s really asking you, “Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?” I’ll be back soon. Until then, live well my friend.

Carolina small businesses have suffered in recent months as a result of out-of-control riots and the inconsistent, politicized COVID policies put in place by our state’s executive branch. After all, he claims to oppose lawlessness and support a coherent response to the pandemic. Pat McCrory is the former governor of North Carolina. He also served as the 53rd mayor of Charlotte.

Letter: Learn where candidates stand on cancer funding This year’s news has rightly been focused on COVID-19, but it's important to remember that the coronavirus hasn't stopped our fight against cancer. Now more than ever, it's easier to see that many important decisions about health issues, including cancer, are made not just in the doctor’s office, but also in Congress and the White House. As a cancer advocate, I know first-hand how these decisions impact North Carolinians and how important it should be for voters. It was encouraging to see the candidates rise above partisan politics and share how they plan to save lives and make cancer a national priority in their responses to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Voter’s Guide. This year alone, 59,620 North Carolinians will hear the words: you have cancer. Now

more than ever our government – including our future U.S. Senator – has a critical role to play as a partner in that fight. The major candidates shared their positions on the importance of increasing funding for cancer research and programs, access to health care, addressing barriers to care in our rural areas such as Albemarle and ensuring health equity in medical research – all issues critical to North Carolina families. Our lawmakers have the power to fund groundbreaking research and enact policies that will help people prevent and fight cancer for generations to come. Find out how they responded by visiting www.cancervotes.org. Victoria Crocker, Charlotte Volunteer, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)

Matthews leaders have opted not to take advantage of the legislation. They’re trying to work more collaboratively with CMS to address overcrowding after the district threatened not to build schools in town. Brawley said there’s misinformation out there about state education funding under the Republican majority. “We did expand education funding beyond the

increasing teacher pay, funding early childhood education and childcare and providing more high school apprenticeships and vocational programs. An increase in teleworking and remote learning during the COVID-19 crisis has exposed the need for broadband internet access in unserved and underserved areas. Hunt has been working on a bill (HB 112) to encourage private and local government action and reduce regulation to allow access to affordable and reliable internet. “We were making strides, but we have a long way to go,” Hunt said. place where we found it when we took control,” he said. He credits Republicans for cutting taxes and resisting the urge to spend savings on “insert policy here, insert project here.” The result, he says, was the flexibility of enduring four hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic to respond to increased needs without making major budget cuts.

to focus on if reelected, including expanding access to healthcare, creating a financially stable transportation budget and ensuring environmental regulations are enforced and strengthened to protect the state’s natural resources. She said the environment has always been one of her main platforms, but she wants to push for more legislative change. Hunt has so many areas she’s passionate about and she wants more time to see them through. She said being a state legislator can be frustrating at times, especially because government moves slow, and it’s a 24/7 job, but she loves every second of it. “There’s a ton of work to do. It’s not a job where you get days off,” Hunt said. “Something comes up every single day, but I like being able to help people and feeling like I’m making a difference.”

A lifelong dream

Children’s author loads 'Relish' with joy, teachable moments

Couple decorates front lawn with movie characters for Halloween by Karie Simmons karie@cmgweekly.com

The force is strong at the home of Greg and Elizabeth Thomas and their neighbors don’t seem to mind. Every Halloween, the couple transforms their front yard into a scene featuring characters from the “Star Wars” franchise, and each time, the display gets bigger and bigger. The Thomases, who have lived on Kelford Lane in Heritage Woods for 12 years, are used to people stopping by to take pictures or compliment their decorations. “We look forward to it every year,” said a neighbor walking his dog. “We aspire to have a theme like you.” “It’s awesome,” said a boy across the street. The couple said the decorations bring joy to the neighborhood and resonate with people of all ages races and ethnicities. “Outside of liking ‘Star Wars,’ that’s why we do it every year,” Greg Thomas said. At first, the display was small with just a few characters from the movies. Now, their front yard is home to over a dozen fan favorites like R2-D2, BB-8, Jabba the Hutt, Baby Yoda, stormtroopers, Tusken Raiders, Darth Maul, the Mandalorian, droids, Jawas and Han Solo in carbonate. Emperor Palpatine guards the front door, making sure no rebels get inside. “He’s more menacing in the daytime,” Greg said. Lights and a fog machine add to the ambiance at night, but Greg said Halloween is when the display will really come alive. He plans to project one of the “Star Wars” movies onto the front window of his home. Elizabeth Thomas is often revered for supporting her husband’s over-the-top Halloween tradition, but the reality is she’s just as into it. Elizabeth said she grew up watching “Star Wars” and became even more of a fan after meeting Greg. Elizabeth said she admires how much time and effort he puts into making the characters and enjoys seeing them come to life. “It’s a form of art,” Elizabeth said. “It’s creativity.” “Everything is either a mask or things he pieced together, like little pieces and parts,” she added. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on movie-quality “Star Wars” mannequins,

Waxhaw seeks major park grant for updates by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com

Waxhaw leaders will enlist in an engineering firm to update its downtown park master plan so the town is better positioned to go after major grants. Town commissioners adopted such a plan just three years ago. Parks and Recreation Director Dena Sabinske said that plan didn't include the community corner and downtown connectivity. It could use some updated community input as well. “Grants that are highly sought after, you need the most updated plan

to help you get your point system up and help you understand the community needs and wants at this moment in time,” Sabinske told commissioners Oct. 13. “We're going to take these bones from this plan and update it to what our needs are now for Waxhaw.” Waxhaw has somewhat of a reputation for creating plans. In fact, the company charged with updating the downtown master plan, Benesch, recently helped Waxhaw create a parks and recreation strategic master plan. As parents, one thing we aspire to is making our children happy and providing them with moments they’ll cherish forever. Ever since he became a father, first-time author Rich Scalea has had a special love for children. Now, as a retiree, Scalea released “Relish,” his debut children’s picture book about a cuddly little Dachshund with a big personality. Published by Charlotte-based Warren Publishing, the book fulfills a lifelong dream for Scalea. “I always wanted to see a child happy, not sad. If I could bring joy to their lives, that’s what I needed to be doing,” Scalea said. “When I wrote 'Relish' and came to a part I thought would bring a child a smile, I would stop and imagine a parent sitting on a couch or bed with their child, holding my book and reading it to them. That’s what mattered the most to me.” The book follows Relish as he explores the home he shares with his favorite person of all, Rosie. But when the Dachshund becomes too mischievous, Rosie’s dad sends him away. From there, he becomes a service dog who wants nothing but to bring joy to ev- I always wanteryone he meets ed to see a along the way. child happy, Indian Trail not sad. Cohn said when Scalea • Rich Scalea wasn't volunteering at his church, he was pitching in at Common Heart. He makes people smile. Scalea has brought a sense of compassion and altruism to his new book, Cohn said. “In a world that is, for now, no longer what it once was, this book is sorely needed to remind all of us that what is lost can be rebuilt and that the satisfaction found in giving is much greater than what we reap when we take,” Cohn said. Scalea was first inspired to write “Relish” when he met a woman who was walking with her Dachshund at the Jersey Shore, near where Scalea was born and raised. He was eating a hot dog at the time – topped with relish. “With my audience being so young, I really wasn't trying to send a message,” said Scalea of the book’s themes, which include pet rescue and adoption. “Instead, I was hoping to bring out their emotions to the different situations Relish was experiencing. His innocent yet mischievous antics, his sadness and happiness. I leave the opportunity of lessons that may be present in 'Relish' to the parents. I wrote the book in a way that can encourage a parent to ask their child questions about Relish’s experiences – how a love between a child and a dog can be so powerful and lead to rescuing Relish from a doggie shelter – and the ensuing journey that follows.”

Bike Charlotte shares virtual rides Bike Charlotte is celebrating all things cycling virtually by sharing well-traveled bike routes of all lengths and ability levels. expressed some skepticism about the process. McMillon said she wanted to see action and detailed-oriented plans as opposed to “more paperwork, more planning, more consultants.” Sabinske convinced commissioners that she would be using the latest plan as a checklist. She covets the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, which provides grants for up to $500,000. While PARTF grants require a local match, they could help the town knock out infrastructure costs, she said. Such grants have been used to fund Crooked Creek Park in Indian Trail, Dogwood Park in Wesley Chapel, Fairview Park, Stallings Municipal Park and others. Waxhaw has never received one. Sabinske told commissioners that Benesch has a track record of securing $35 million in PARTF and Land and Water Conservation Fund grants over the past 20 years.

Check out some of the classic Open Streets 704 routes, discover a new neighborhood loop or ride an entire century on the greenway at https://bikecharlotte.org/ virtual-rides/. Participants are encouraged to ride the routes through Nov. 8 and share their experiences on social media.

Grants help park projects Several communities have used grants from the NC Parks and Recreation Trust Fund to build out parks. Here's a partial list: • Fairview: Fairview Park (2015) • Indian Trail: Crooked Creek Park (2016) • Lake Park: Lake Park Community Recreation project (2000) • Matthews: Squirrel Lake Park improvements (2009) and Rice Road land acquisition (2013) • Mint Hill: Brief Road parcel acquisition (2015) • Monroe: Parks Williams Athletic Complex (2003 and 2004) and Belk Tonawanda Park (2021) • Pineville: Lake Park (2017) • Stallings: Stallings Municipal Park (2003 & 2005) • Union County: Cane Creek Park (1997, 2003 & 2004) and Jesse Helms Park land acquisition (2004) • Wesley Chapel: Dogwood Park (2000) • Wingate: Wingate Town Park (2000) and Wingate Community Building (2004) Source: NC Division of Parks and Recreation

Jon Wood, a senior project manager with Benesch, said his firm recently helped secure more than $400,000 in PARTF grant funding for Monroe by preparing a plan for Belk Tonawanda Park's expansion. “There's still some paper involved, but there's going to be more design, more site plans that you'll get to see, touch and feel,” Wood said. The plan will serve as a transition between the parks and recreation strategic master plan and more schematic design plans for a

downtown park. The public will have a chance to provide input on that design. Town Manager Jeffrey Wells wants the public to know that the plan needs to be realistic. “We can't just jam all kinds of things into a piece of property like that,” Wells said. “We have to be very mindful. We want to do some really great, cool things and have some great ideas programmed in there, but we also have to be able to do it with what we realistically can spend on it.”

Common Symptoms of Vein Problems: • Aching/Throbbing Legs • Heavy Legs • Leg Swelling • Leg Cramps • Leg Restlessness • Visible Spider Veins & Varicose Veins

Preferred Diagnostic Test: • Ultrasound evaluation of leg veins

If you have tired, heavy legs, or if your legs are cramping or restless it’s a good idea to get your veins checked out. The main test used to determine whether you have vein problems is an ultrasound of your legs. This test takes about 20-25 minutes per leg and allows the structure and function of your leg veins to be evaluated. Testing and treatment for vein problems is covered by most insurance companies. If you’ve met your deductible now may be the perfect opportunity to take the first step towards better legs. OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Why am I always propping my legs up? Many people with aching, throbbing, heavy legs have no idea that they may be suffering from a common problem with their leg veins. When the veins in your legs aren’t working properly your legs can feel weak and tired, and it may feel like you don’t have the energy you used to. Many people with leg vein problems find that they are often looking for a place to sit and may even find themselves propping their legs up to reduce leg discomfort. The most common condition affecting leg veins is venous reflux. In this condition the valves inside the leg veins have stopped working properly, which results in increased backpressure. Although this condition is generally mild and not life threatening there are degrees of severity, and some people can progress to develop more advanced problems including irritated or discolored skin, or wounds around the ankles. Millions of people in the United States are affected by venous reflux, and the majority of people don’t even know they have the condition! Venous reflux can affect everyone from young adults to the elderly and can affect both men and women. People with a family history of vein problems are particularly vulnerable. Other risk factors include being overweight, jobs or careers that involve prolonged sitting (with the legs hanging down) and prolonged standing. Women who have been pregnant are also at higher risk. The overwhelming majority of people with leg vein problems have great treatment options. If your leg veins aren’t working properly there are now multiple procedures that can fix this problem.
