WHAT'S INSIDE:

District 6 includes Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville and the southern-most parts of Charlotte. County results showed Rodriguez-McDowell had 17,139 absentee by-mail votes compared to Levy's 9,038. The remaining votes were reported by precinct. Levy had more votes in 23 of the 29 precincts. Levy certainly noticed, telling followers on Facebook that he fell short 1,400 votes with 100,000 votes cast. “I am proud of our campaign and thankful to my family and supporters,” he wrote. “This map shows that the Republican message has broad appeal. God bless!” Levy had 3,428 more votes in Mint Hill

precincts and 1,890 more votes in Matthews precincts than Rodriguez McDowell. Rodriguez-McDowell had more votes at the following precincts 235 (Lebanon Road Elementary in Mint Hill), 231 (Pineville UMC), 229 (Christ the King Lutheran in Charlotte), 148 (Community House Middle in Charlotte), 129 (Pineville Elementary) and 122 (Good Shepherd UMC in Charlotte) If the results hold up, Rodriguez-McDowell will join returnees Elaine Powell, Vilma Leake, George Dunlap, Mark Jerrell, Ella Scarborough and Pat Cotham as well as newcomers Laura Meier and Leigh Altman on the commission.

here were 10 races on ballots in southern Mecklenburg and western Union counties that I thought were going to be competitive or compelling. Most were but I can't say that anything in our coverage area surprised me. The bulk of Union County voted Republican while Mecklenburg County continues to ride the blue wave of the Democrats. A true apples to apples comparison of whether the blue wave is permanent will occur next in 2022, when there isn't a polarizing presidential campaign on the ballot that pushes apolitical people to the polls. If I had to pick one race that surprised me most it would be N.C. Senate District 39 in Mecklenburg County. I'm not shocked Democrat DeAndrea Salvador defeated Republican Joshua Niday but surprised by her margin of victory. Salvador won by 26,741 votes, or nearly 62.2%. District 39 is a seat previously held by Republicans Rob Bryan, Dan Bishop and Bob Rucho. Salvador, 30, is new to politics but grew up in the district. The Waddell High alum founded RETI, a nonprofit specializing in energy efficiency, and she has served on the Mecklenburg Air Quality Commission. “For me, running for office is really about working for our community to drive forth the solutions we want to see,” she told South Charlotte Weekly before the election, specifically mentioning health care and gerrymandering. My hope is that when the memory of this election begins to fade, we'll continue to see names like Niday, Bill Brawley, Joel Levy, Matthew Ridenhour, Amy Bynum, Don Pomeroy and others stay involved in the community.

Here's how select precincts in Charlotte Media Group's distribution area voted:

(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump won key battleground states in Ohio, Florida and Texas on Election Day. Former Vice President Joe Biden took Arizona. But the race in other swing states remained too close to call as Americans awoke Wednesday still not knowing the winner of the presidential election. And they might not find out for awhile, either. Results in Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – where millions of votes, much of them mail-ins, were still being counted as of 6 a.m. eastern time Wednesday – will determine the winner. In early morning comments before supporters, Trump said he was poised to win Tuesday night but questioned why races weren't called in Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where he held leads as votes were still being counted. In unofficial results in Mecklenburg County, Biden had 375,503 to Trump's 178,066. In Union County, Trump put up 79,778 votes compared to Biden's 48,199. “We had such a big night,” Trump said. ... “We were going to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election,” claiming that the integrity of the election was in question. A few hours later, new vote counts in Wisconsin and Michigan gave Biden a slight lead in the two states while Trump was leading in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina. Before Trump spoke, Biden told supporters he was confident he would still win despite deficits in the remaining key battleground states. "We feel good about where we are," Biden said. "We believe we're on track to win this election." Trump so far has been declared the winner in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kan-

sas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and West Virginia. Biden won Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Nebraska and Maine are the only two states that split their electoral college votes by Congressional districts. In the 48 others, all electoral college votes are awarded to the winner of the respective state. Biden held a 238-213 electoral vote advantage over Trump at 6:20 a.m. eastern, according to The Associated Press. Either candidate needs to secure at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency. The battleground states of Georgia (16 electoral college votes), Michigan (16), North Carolina (15), Pennsylvania (20) and Wisconsin (10) will determine the outcome. Trump held leads in all but Wisconsin. If Trump ends up winning in the states he held leads in early Wednesday, he would be reelected. But if the race remains close in these key swing states, it's possible

– maybe even likely – that a winner won't be known for days as more than 99 million Americans voted early or by mail before Tuesday's polls even opened. States have different rules for counting and processing mail-in votes. Some wait until after all polls close in the state. Some states also will accept mail-in ballots for days after Nov. 3. In the key swing state of Pennsylvania, for example, some counties don't expect to start counting mailin ballots until Wednesday or later. During Pennsylvania's June primary, roughly half of counties were still counting ballots a full week after Election Day. And in states where the final, unofficial results are particularly close, both Trump and Biden have attorneys on standby to legally challenge any potential discrepancies. That could drag out the presidential outcome for weeks. In 2016, Trump won the electoral vote and the presidency despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by nearly 3 million votes. By winning the key swing states of Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin, Trump claimed 304 electoral votes to Clinton's 227. Dan McCaleb is the executive editor of The Center Square.

Dates to Remember 245th Birthday of the United States Marines

Founded on November 10, 1775, the United States Marine Corps, also referred to as the United States Marines, is the maritime land force service branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for conducting expeditionary and amphibious operations with the United States Navy as well as the Army and Air Force. What sets Marines apart from any other fighting force on the globe isn’t just how they’re trained, the equipment they use or their tactics. It’s something much more primal—it’s the fighting spirit that lives within every Marine and drives them to accept nothing less than victory in all situations. That determination to win, eagerness to fight, and high standard of excellence are all traits strengthened in the Corps.

Cooper wins reelection as N.C. governor by Nyamekye Daniel Contributor

(The Center Square) – Gov. Roy Cooper was re-elected for a second term Nov. 3, defeating his Republican opponent Forest Lt. Gov. Dan Forest. The Associated Press called the race for Cooper at 10:35 p.m. With 97.5% of precincts reporting, Cooper had 51.5% of the vote to Forest's 47%. "North Carolinians have made their first voices heard tonight, but the hard work of listening to all voices will be ongoing," Cooper said after being declared the winner. "So let's take the time to imagine what it's like to be in each other's shoes. Let's dedicate ourselves to really hearing one another. Let's take the time to see what is really true, what

is not and what is worthy of debate today and for the next four years." Forest said he had “a lot of good things planned” for the state in a speech to supporters after his lost Tuesday. “I'm not happy with the result,” Forest said. Forest had an advantage in Union County, earning 76,751 votes (59.35%), but Mecklenburg voters favored Cooper with 380,258 votes (67.81%). Cooper's campaign spokesperson Liz Doherty said the results show North Carolinians trust Cooper and reject Forest. "These results show that North Carolinians want to expand Medicaid, boost public education and keep health and safety first during this pandemic," she said. "North Carolinians rejected Dan Forest’s campaign of fear and division and dangerous lies and opted instead

CLT Trail Guide offers insight into exploring the city The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority has launched the CLT Trail Guide on www.charlottes gotalot.com, a new tool that gives visitors and residents alike the ability to choose their own adventure by selecting one of six interactive itineraries highlighting over 22 miles of trails, dining with outdoor amenities, local businesses and attractions. Though some may not associate this bustling metropolis with the great outdoors, Mecklenburg County is threaded with over 52 miles of developed greenway trails and the Charlotte region is home to one of the world’s most premier outdoor recreation attractions, the U.S. National Whitewater Center, which boasts over 45 miles of trails on its campus alone. The new CLT Trail Guide is an interactive digital resource designed to provide a guide for navigating Charlotte’s outdoor recreation offerings. A neighborhood guide accompanies each trail, so users can take a deeper dive into the communities they’ll be passing through. Trails include biking, running or walking paths designed to be inclusive for all fitness levels. The itineraries also thread through some of Charlotte's most Instagrammable spots, so users are guaranteed to find the perfect backdrop for their next photo shoot. The mobile-friendly trail resource allow users to send itiner-

aries directly to their phones via text and/or open them directly in Google Maps to get around and visit recommended spots with ease. Each trail itinerary includes several routes and recommended stops, as well as breaks down distance, intensity level and average time by foot or by bike it takes to complete. The six trails available now are: • The Community Trail, Midtown (2.3 miles) — This trail cuts through popular parks and gathers spots in the Midtown area including Cherry, Elizabeth, Dilworth and Myers Park. • The Award-Winning Trail, South End (1.8 miles) — This trail follows along the light rail allowing users to test out some of the city’s best offerings as they cruise segments of the Charlotte Rail Trail, a 3.5-mile stretch of sidewalk along the LYNX Blue Line that’s bordered by economic development and colored with interactive art installations. • The Skyline Trail, Uptown (3.5 miles) — Users will follow this trail to explore what Uptown Charlotte has to offer, such as The Green, a 1.5 acre park in the heart of the city. • The Adventure Trail, West Charlotte (0.8 miles) — The U.S. National Whitewater Center is the focal point of this trail, which gives users recommendations for activities to try, food and drink to sample and trails to trek.

Looking for new trails to explore or ways to enhance the experience beyond running? The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority has plenty of ideas. CMG file photo

• The Neighborhood Trail, South Charlotte (6 miles) — This trail explores the suburban areas of Charlotte – home to beautiful neighborhoods, shopping centers, restaurants, hotels and green spaces, such as Four Mile Creek Greenway and Lower McAlpine Creek Greenway. • The 49ers Trail, University City (8.4 miles) — For those looking to

see what the university area has to offer, the 49ers trail guides users to take the light rail for a stroll through the UNCC campus and its botanical gardens, the Shoppes at University Place and nearby greenways. The CLT Trail Guide is the newest addition to resident and visitor resources launched by the CRVA this year, including the Pitch In

Take Out restaurant database and the Your Table is Ready initiative, which works to support the food and drink industry during this uncertain time. The CRVA will continue to unveil more interactive trails in the future and encourages visitors and Charlotteans to keep an eye on https://www.charlottes gotalot.com/trails for new routes.

Nothing Deters Charlotte’s Giving Spirit

by Mara Campolungo

Co-Founder And Executive Director of The Sandbox and Founder of Ordinary Angels

In a year overflowing with more critical needs than ever before, The Sandbox decided we’d not only care for our own families, but also

lend a helping hand to other organizations as well. There were plenty of organizations from which to choose, so we set out to be intentional about where and whom we served. So many moments and stories stand out. One of our own Sandbox families spurred a giving movement, and we were honored to be a part

of it as we lent our hands to help the homeless. Vincent Guy, a nineteen-yearold Sandbox HERO, succumbed to his illness this past June. Vinny had harbored a dream of starting a nonprofit, one that would help kids with special needs. His heart was pure gold, and he was a warrior when it came to thinking about others and serving—a true Sandbox BELIEVER! His grieving mom and her daughters set out to make Vinny’s dream come true, even though he was no longer here to see it come to fruition. They started Vinny & Friends, a nonprofit founded on October 5th, which now serves our community. During the Sandbox’s Cabarrus Blessing drive, they collected over 5,000 items through their new nonprofit. I have no doubt Vinny is dancing in heaven’s nonstop prom! 2020 is a celebratory year for our charity. It’s the 10th Anniversary of our “An Evening of Believing” prom. Instead of balloons, a red carpet, and limos to commemorate this special prom season, we have done two things: We’ve planned a special weekend getaway for our families and we have pounded the

ground, harder than ever before, to support these ten deserving organizations in our area. KW Collards looks to spend some green by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com

Respecting all life Green burials provide environmentally friendly option

by Karie Simmons karie@cmgweekly.com

An hour west of uptown Charlotte, just over the state line in South Carolina, sits 36 acres of hardwoods, dogwoods, wildflowers, ferns and meadows called Kings Mountain Preserve. A creek runs through the property, as do three miles of hiking trails. It’s a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and also a peaceful, eternal resting place for loved ones. The land is a conservation burial ground for “green burials,” or environmentally friendly burials, and also boasts a retreat center, pavilion and outdoor chapel. Terry Robertson, owner of Robertson Funeral and Cremation Service in Charlotte, purchased the property at 321 Indian Springs Road in Blacksburg, S.C., to give families more options. Located 20 minutes from historic Kings Mountain State Park, it’s the first combination conservation burial ground and funeral home on the East Coast and the second in the nation. “It celebrates life through the interconnectedness we have with nature as one whole community,” Robertson said. Robertson has been in the traditional funeral industry since the early 1990s. He started thinking about alternative burials after he was diagnosed with neck cancer. Doctors told him exposure to carcinogens while in the embalming room may have caused his disease and gave him a 30% chance to live. That was 20 years ago. Robertson wants people to know they don’t have to be embalmed (preserved with formaldehyde-based chemicals) when they die. A green burial uses non-toxic or no chemicals and burial containers are 100% biodegradable. This reduces carbon emissions, conserves natural resources and makes the process safer for workers and the envi-

ronment, Robertson said. Kings Mountain Preserve doesn't look like a traditional cemetery. Instead of a field of tombstones among trimmed grass, burial spaces are located along nature trails and among the trees and plants. Native stones which can be engraved are all that mark the graves. Scattering of cremains (cremated remains) is not allowed as it can kill the plants, and vaults (concrete containers that enclose a coffin to help prevent a grave from sinking) are prohibited. Only natural, biodegradable materials are used. Robertson said workers hand-dig all graves, removing the dirt in three layers and replacing it the same way. This helps foster plant life and maintain the ecosystems in the soil. “No traditional cemetery does that,” Robertson said. “They take a backhoe and they dig it out and they put it back in.” see PRESERVE, Page 4B

Brokerage secures trendy spot in Montford Park Barclay Realty Group has had an exciting year that will be capped off with a new location in Montford Park. Kristi Miller opened the independent brokerage firm to agents in January just before COVID-19 began crippling the economy. The brokerage started in an interior office space in SouthPark but quickly outgrew that location. “I definitely knew it was time to make a change,” Miller said. “We kept growing and I wanted more of a retail location with exposure to our client base.” That led to landing a location in the growing Montford Park area of Charlotte. Nestled between South Park

Union County is offering economic incentives to KW Collards to put down roots. The company, which specializes in producing high quality collard greens, leases space in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties. Company officials reached out to Monroe-Union County Economic Development in September about opening a permanent location. “What makes KW Collars unique is that they are 100% vegetarian and vegan and they are sold in glass jars to ensure flavor retention and long shelf life,” said Ron Mahle, assistant director of economic development for MUCED. “There is no meat whatsoever in this product.” Mahle told commissioners Nov. 2 that KW Collards plan to invest $3.2 million into a permanent location that would include a 25,000-square-foot processing plant with a commercial kitchen, greenhouse and hydroponic system to grow tomatoes and green peppers for their product. Kizito Wademi, president of KW Collards, told commissioners he's looking for a 120-acre site that would produce about 20% to 30% of what the company needs. The rest will come from local farmers. Commissioners approved a economic incentives of up to $60,800 over five years. The funding is contingent on the $3.2 million investment and creation of 10 fulltime jobs. Company officials expect upwards of 38 jobs. The company would also pay a projected $116,944 property taxes over the grant period. Commissioner Stony Rushing said he

and Madison Park, the area has exploded in growth over the past few years. “You have Brawley’s Beverage, which is a Charlotte staple, but just down the street they have updated the classic Park Road Shopping Center,” Miller said. “New apartments and retail are popping up everywhere. This area has become so walkable and convenient.” The local real estate market took a hit early in 2020 but eventually began to boom as interest rates plummeted and inventory became scarce. “It was an interesting year to open a new brokerage, but we are seeing success and are excited to move into our new location,”

The burlesque dancer. The barber. The carpet installer. The lawyer. The day trader. The wedding planner. The web designer. These are some of the people listeners will meet on “Work It,” a new podcast from WFAE and winner of the “Queen City PodQuest.” The first episode will be available Nov. 13. “Work It” looks at the complicated relationship people have with their work. The podcast delves into the joy, pain and insight people get from their jobs. And how do those factors shape people’s views of the world and their place in it. “Work It” is the brainchild of Jill Bjers and Stephanie Hale. For more than 15 years, Hale has been asking people about their jobs. After reading Studs Terkel’s book, “Working,” the idea for a podcast solidified. Bjers’ is a self-described “Jill-of-alltrades” – mother, wife, author/playwright, organizer and travel junkie. Recently retired from a job of 20 years, Bjers has been evaluating what to keep and what to change in her work life. When Hale asked Bjers to help with the podcast, she jumped at the idea. Neither had any podcasting experience when they entered “WFAE’s Queen City PodQuest” contest in 2019. The contest attracted nearly 400 entries. More than 31,000 people cast almost 100,000 votes for their favorites. The top five vote-getters moved on to a mentoring phase. Over two months, teams honed their ideas and created a podcast trailer. The teams pitched their podcasts to a panel of judges and an audience at the finale event. As the winners, Bjers and Hale worked
