The 6-3, 230-pound Mock is raking in offers from the likes of the Ivy League schools, Richmond, Eastern Michigan and others. ootball is back. Every team has its expectations, coaches are pumped for what could be and players are excited to finally hit someone on another team when it really matters. To me, high school football season is the best, especially after sitting idle over the summer. Every year there are surprises, disappointments and programs that take the next step in solidifying their place among our state’s football dynasties. This season is great because we have all of that but the biggest mystery of all is the teams. Where will they end up in the standings? Are there any teams making big jumps this season? Who are the next big stars? Which teams will take a step back this season after big performances last year? So many questions, huh? Below is my conference breakdown that has it everything a football fan needs to know – from the stars to make sure you watch for, to predictions for each team, the order of finish in each conference and much more.

Weddington’s run to last season’s state championship was nearly the perfect storm. The Warriors won two more games (they finished 15-1) than they’d ever won in school history. Their 6-1 conference mark was the best in school history, and the high-powered offense averaged just a smidge under 38 points per game, which is the school’s best.

But what may not come to mind right away is how smothering the Weddington defense was. They allowed just 12.44 points per game. It wasn’t the best in school history – the 2013 team finished at under 10 points per game – but that was a stout defense nonetheless. Leading tackler Eamon Murphy is one of four of the top nine tacklers who graduated, but there is a lot to love about this year’s defense, starting with Alec Mock (150 tackles, 15 quarterback hurries, 14 tack-

for loss, 6.5 sacks, a pair of blocked kicks, two forced fumbles and an interception. Alsbrooks is also heavily recruited, with many programs waiting to see how he transitions from his defensive end position to linebacker alongside Mock. “It’s going really well between us, and it isn’t a big deal at all. We’ve played together since the third grade, so it’s going well out there,” Mock said. “We’ve looked good. We’re playing as a team, everyone is picking up everything, all of the new guys are doing well and Malik (Mustapha) came in and has done a good job. We’re able to plug him right in, so it’s going really well. There are no issues, really.” One potential issue is the switch Alsbrooks is making, but he said the kinks are already getting worked out. “I’ve had little growing pains here and there, but Alec has helped me out with everything,” Alsbrooks said. “The biggest challenges for me is just tackling, really. You have to know where you are on the field and you can’t just bulldoze past everybody. You’ve also got a lot more responsibility with your gaps. I just have

to improve my vision and see where to go, but it’s coming along. I’ve gotten better every day, but a lot of guys have stepped up. Everyone is in a bigger role, but we have guys stepping up everywhere to help fill in the voids.” The Warriors will also feature major contributors, such as Joe Zovistoski (73 tackles and a team-high eight sacks), Will Shipley, Noah Niemeyer, Bryson Parker, Colby Barsz and Mustapha, the Ardrey Kell transfer who already holds at least eight offers as a defensive back. While the offense will sizzle with Shipley and his running mates, the defense will ultimately determine the Warriors' fate. It’s a challenge Mock and Alsbrooks are looking forward to. “The key is everyone being on the same page,” Mock said. “We run a complicated defense and we’re switching around a lot, but if everyone is on the same page and if everyone is doing their job, then everything will be just fine.” If that’s the case, Alsbrooks thinks this team could have another storybook ending. “We’re coming together and getting better every day,” he said. “We have to be a team, be focused and all come together on that one goal. If we can do that, I think we have the team to do it again.”

Coach: Thomas Langley, ninth season (54-30) 2018 Record: 8-4, 4-0 in NCISAA Western Returning Starters: Offense, 6; Defense, 9 Inside the Huddle The Warriors came within a fourth down stop of winning the NCISAA Division II championship game last season. Much of the talent is back from that team and hungry to get back. Angel Gonzalez returns at quarterback after serving as a backup and fill-in-starter for each of the past two seasons. He’s more than capable and will put up big stats in this offense if he stays healthy. Basketball convert Luke Gaskins will open as the primary ball carrier with Tommy Miller and track star Jadus Davis serving as his complements. Davis, Jed Wooten and Colby Girard will open in a three-receiver set with tight end Indiana Moen a capable receiver. Those receivers, especially Davis, can go the distance any time. Andrew Threatt is the top offensive linemen for a team that brings back quite a bit, including Alex Green, who missed all but two games with injury. All four members of the secondary – Davis, Girard, Miller and Luke Roffler – return, making

that unit a strength. Moen and Colton Fitch lead the 3-4 linebacking core, and while a little thin up front, Josh Owens and Threatt will be among the anchors. Sophomore Bryce McFerson is ranked within the top five kickers nationally in his class, and a big weapon. Bottom Line It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibilities that this is the team that gets the Warriors their first-ever state title. Davis and his receivers are electric, Gonzalez has been waiting for this chance and the defense can shut teams down so all of the pieces seem in place. Inside the Huddle It’s been three straight losing seasons for the Cavs, but new coach Trey Kavanaugh has breathed new life into this program. Despite their lack of experience, the Cavs hope to switch up their looks offensively and play solid defense after allowing more than 36 points per game in their worst defensive performance since the team’s inaugural 2009 season. That unit will start the turnaround with the big boys, including stud linemen Rickey Weekes, Gavin Thomas and Tyrell Dawson. Andreau Rastia returns as a starter at linebacker, but expect a big season from AJ Goodloe as well. Jackson Cheek picked off

three passes last year and is the career leader in interceptions for the Cavs. The offense will look a little different this year with mostly new skill guys. Evan Bernard takes over at quarterback with Jack Rhinehart as the primary ball carrier. Look out for Myles Teasley, an athlete who can throw, catch and run the ball. Jay Rector, Seth Eighmy and AJ Colombo will get a lot of looks at receiver while converted lineman Trevor Tate takes over at tight end. Myles Lopez is the best of the line, but the Cavs are big and tough up front. Bottom Line This team will be competitive every night. However, in

the Southern Carolinas, it’s probably at best a race for third behind state champs Catholic and Weddington. It’ll take some time, but this program is trending up. Offense QB: Evan Bernard/Myles Teasley; RB: Jack Rhinehart/ Myles Teasley; WR: Seth Eighmy; WR: Jay Rector; WR: AJ Colombo; TE: Trevor Tate; LT: Myles Lopez; LG: Andrew Lucas; C: Nick Robinson; RG: Adrian Aligwekwe; and RT: Alex Sanchez. SUN VALLEY

BREAKDOWNS (continued from page 1A)

Coach: Tad Baucom, sixth season at Sun Valley (40-24); (133-109 overall) 2018 Record: 10-3; 5-2 in Southern Carolinas Returning Starters: Offense, 6; Defense, 5 Inside the Huddle The Spartans have a new identity and may start with freshman phenom Carson Black under center, although he has to beat out incumbent Jacob Bowman to win the role. While the passing game is electric with elite 2021 receiver prospect Gavin Blackwell running precise routes, the team may rely more on the running game with Tacory Robinson and Deuce Wilson (and maybe a dose of freshman sensation Toney McFadden) running behind a big and physical line led by 2021 OT Michael Gonzalez. His big linemates should have little trouble opening holes for whoever runs it. The defense will rotate a lot of bulk up front, including Ryan Gundersen, who returns to the team after missing most of the past two seasons with knee injuries. Eli Carter and Ethan Lunsford lead a good linebacking core. The secondary with track star Jalen

Bethune, Kolbi Andreson, Matt Norton and Jeremiah Holmes is among the elite of the county. Bottom Line The Spartans are entering a new era after the graduation of four-year starter Sam Howell at quarterback, but they will move forward with an athletic and talented set of skill guys at running back, receiver and in the secondary. With so many new starters, it may take some time for Sun Valley to get a firm footing, but once they do, the Spartans should assume their usual place among Southern Carolinas contenders. Depth Chart Offense QB: Jacob Bowman/Carson Black; RB: Tacory Robinson/Deuce Wilson; H-back: Toney McFadden; WR: Gavin Blackwell; WR: Adrian Ealy/Brance Westbrooks; WR: Christian McIntosh/Rodney Ivey; TE: Mason Tinsley; OL: Jimmy

FOREST HILLS Coach: Cory Smith, fourth season (7-27) 2018 Record: 3-8, 2-2 in Rocky River 2A/3A Returning Starters: Offense, 7; Defense, 7 Inside the Huddle The Yellow Jackets were doomed last season by a defense that gave up 22 or more points in every game. In its three wins, the team allowed 17.3 points per game while surrendering 48 per contest in the eight losses. That’s a huge area of concern entering 2019. The Jackets will turn to linebackers Brett Springs and Sean Hunter to start the turnaround. Both had

Southern Carolinas There simply isn’t a better 3A conference in the state. Charlotte Catholic (3-A) and Weddington (3-AA) both won state titles last season and nobody would say you were crazy if you said both were the favorites to repeat. Right now, they probably are. Mix in Monroe’s high-powered offense, Sun Valley’s playmakers and grit on defense and a few teams, including Piedmont and Parkwood, I think could be a lot better this year.

productive seasons and return a year stronger and more experienced. Up front, Romel Wright plays like a grown man and along with Zach Evans is in line for a very productive season. Defensive backs Ahmad Stafford, Markyle Crowder, Tyquan Rushing and Queshawn Blakeney are lightning quick to the ball and interchangeable in the secondary. Hopefully, Derrick Bright and JJ Williams, once he returns from injury, can provide depth and get those guys off the field some. The offense will again be lethal after scoring nearly 26 points per game last season. The offensive line entered 2018 having not started a single varsity game between

The Spartans are loaded with returning talent and newcomers alike, but it will be a question of how quickly it all comes together. them, but are now a strength led by Jake Mullis and Harrison Hinson. That will benefit Stafford and Crowder, who will split carries early on as they look for one to emerge. Quarterback Cannon Davis has been productive on the JV level and will have Rushing, Blakeney, Bright, Burch and Travis Horne all looking for touches on the outside.

Tyquan Rushing/Derrick Bright; WR: Queshawn Blakeney/Jaqulin Burch; WR: JJ Williams/Travis Horne; TE: Romel Wright; LT: Jake Mullis; LG: Brian Smith; C: Harrison Hinson; RG: Rowen Starnes; and RT: Christian Kirby/Luke Baker.

Bottom Line Behind their experienced offensive line and an improved defense, the Yellow Jackets should take a big step forward this year. With their playmakers on offense, new quarterback Cannon Davis could push them even further. Depth Chart Offense QB: Cannon Davis; RB: Ahmad Stafford/Makyle Crowder; WR:

Defense DE: Romel Wright; DE: Zach Evans; DT: Jonathan Helms; DT: Luke Baker/Shyheim Burch; LB: Brett Springs; LB: Sean Hunter; LB: JJ Williams; CB: Ahmad Stafford/ Makyle Crowder; CB: Tyquan Rushing/Derrick Bright; S: Queshawn Blakeney; and S: Jayden Avalos/ Travis Horne. Projected Order of Finish: Weddington 10-1; 7-0 CLT Catholic 9-1; 6-1 Monroe 7-4; 3-4 Sun Valley 6-5; 4-3 Marvin Ridge 5-6; 4-3 Piedmont 3-8; 2-5 Parkwood 3-8, 1-6 Cuthbertson 2-7; 1-6 People think Weddington will take a hit, but I don’t see it. Will Shipley is brilliant, but just one of a half dozen other superstars who have them thinking repeat. Charlotte Catholic lost a lot of talent, too, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be just as dominant in 2019. Lead back Lamagea McDowell is a big, strong ball carrier with excellent speed and elite left tackle Malik McGowan anchors a stout offensive line so the Cougars can run it. The linebackers are as good as anyone’s and they are 73-5 in coach Mike Brodowicz’s five seasons. Monroe is a team I really like. Quarterback Matt Bennett has an offer from Southern Miss, and a wide receiver corps that will give defensive coordinators nightmares with stars Shaleak Knotts (51 catches, 757 yards and 10 scores) and Salen Streater (24 catches, 397 yards and six touchdowns in 7.5 games last season). see BREAKDOWNS, Page 4A

BREAKDOWNS

like what they’ve seen from the offense as a whole. While the offense is inexperienced, the Pirate defense is the opposite with nine starters back. All-conference end Davidson Carroll headlines a defensive front that gets after opposing quarterbacks. He’s joined by Chris Capers, Malik Jordan and John Gamoneda. The linebackers are fast and explosive behind all-conference pick Dylan Burdette. The secondary is another strength with Harris, King, Perry and Chapman pulling double duty.

(continued from page 3A)

Metrolina Christian transfer Jack Crump and holdover Tezien Grier will tag team the run game, so the offense will sizzle. The problem is, many of those guys must go both ways so conditioning and depth are always big concerns. Sun Valley has posted 21 wins over the past two seasons, marking a school record for a two-year span. Tacory Robinson is three-year starter while junior offensive lineman Michael Gonzalez and receiver Gavin Blackwell (51 receptions, 1,136 yards and 19 receiving touchdowns) are Power 5 recruits. Defensively, eight of the top nine tacklers are gone though. Marvin Ridge quarterback Sully McDermott was good in spot duty last year and can lead an offense, but they have a brutal non conference schedule with Northwest Cabarrus (13-1 in 2018), Ardrey Kell (So. Meck 7 tri-champion), Porter Ridge (10-5, 4-A regional champs) and Rock Hill (8-3) all on the road and Jay M Robinson (6-6, but improved) at home. Star junior Ian Hutter (74 catchers, 874 yards and five touchdowns as a receiver) is a superstar receiver, but the Mavs imploded late last season. They have a lot of talent, but can they put it together? New Piedmont coach Jon Castator comes in as a very highly regarded assistant from Porter Ridge, and he’s set on turning around a team that went just 2-9 last season and hasn’t had an outright winning season since an 8-5 mark in 2013. Castator will lean on running back Conner Purser (1,228 yards, 5.7 yards per rush and 13 touchdowns) once again, but this season he’ll have some help after accounting for over 43 percent of the team’s offensive production in 2018. Junior Brooks Gsell will be a main beneficiary of increased targets. But the defense must improve upon the 33.5 points. Austin Cain was more than 30 percent of Parkwood’s offense last season and made over 80 tackles on defense, but they may just be a precursor to 2019. see BREAKDOWNS, Page 5A

Bottom Line The Pirates will look much different on offense, but these guys have patiently waited their chances to star Friday nights. Harris, Perry and Chapman will have big years on both sides of the ball. If Cox and the passing game keep up, they could have another banner year in the Southwestern 4A.

On paper, it appears the Pirates would be decimated with the loss of all of their stars from last year’s regional finalist squad, but it’s quite the opposite. (From left) Connor Henderson, new quarterback Mason Cox, Davidson Carroll and Brandon Perry are just a few of the stars who emerge. Andrew Stark/UCW photo

PORTER RIDGE Coach: Michael Hertz, fourth season (25-15) 2018 Record: 10-5, 5-2 in Southwestern 4A Returning Starters: Offense, 2; Defense, 9 Inside the Huddle In each of his three seasons, coach

Michael Hertz has increased the Pirates' win total. Hertz led Porter Ridge to 10 wins and a regional final appearance last year, but he will have to retool after having to replace much of the offensive firepower from a season ago. New quarterback Mason Cox can rely on the Pirates' three-headed rushing attack that will feature Kirkland Harris, Brandon Perry and Alex Chapman. All three will receive significant carries. The Pirates will look to throw a little more, and Nick Horstkamp should be one of the main beneficiaries of that. Up front, Sean Ahaotu-Simelane and Jason Gonzalez are Porter Ridges’ only two returning starters, but the Pirates

It’s intriguing because a win over a Southern Carolinas Conference team this early in the season would have to give the Warriors a boost. However, if new Cavs coach Trey Kavanaugh can knock off the NCISAA Division II runner-up early it could snowball into something big.

The Cougars are the defending NCHSAA 3-A champs while Weddington won the 3-AA crown. The running back and linebacker play in this game will be phenomenal, but the Warriors will be upset minded with star Will Shipley looking to run past the Cougars outstanding defense.

MONROE

BREAKDOWNS (continued from page 4A)

Coach: Johnny Sowell, 15th season (127-62) 2018 Record: 7-6, 3-4 in Southern Carolinas Returning Starters: Offense, 7; Defense, 7 Inside the Huddle There may not be a better trio of receivers than what the Redhawks can put on the field with Salen Streater, Jordan Black and super sophomore Shaleak Knotts (51 catches, 757 yards and 10 touchdowns). That athleticism is their biggest strength. New quarterback Matt Bennett, an Ardrey Kell transfer who began last season as the Knights starter, should flourish behind an offensive line featuring the Rushing twins and Montavious Watters. The line is very big physically, but a little thin in numbers. Monroe graduated its top six rushers from last year, but Metrolina Christian transfer Jack Crump should help soften that blow after he ran for more than 1,000 yards and scored 11 touchdowns as a sophomore. Like on offense at the receiver position, the Redhawks can go six or seven deep in the secondary, and they’re all interchangeable parts. Elijah Funderburke and Jyilyque Holeman may be the standouts of that unit. Crump is a sure tackler. He will team with Damian Sanchez and Ricardo Brown to form a good set of linebackers. Up front, like on offense, the Redhawks are talented but will need to stay healthy. Bottom Line The Redhawks made some noise in

Sametrious Drakeford, Wyne McGriff, Brooks Mushington and Kyle Knox will try to take more pressure off quarterback Brock Cain, but the defense allowed nearly 37 points per game, and must get shored up. New Cuthbertson coach Trey Kavanaugh is as upbeat as coaches come, and he starts with a clean slate with just seven of the 22 starting spots filled with returnees. Six of the top seven receivers, their quarterback, three leading rushers, stud kicker and top three leading tacklers are all gone from last year’s team that underperformed in many people’s eyes, including mine. Evan Bernard, AJ Colomobo, Jackson Cheek and Robbie Crump are a few guys destined for stardom this year, but the Cavs need time to grow in this league. Union Academy has a change in offensive philosophy that will see them run the ball more as more of a ground-and-pound team. That suits Illinois commit Phifer Griffin and the rest of the offensive line, which will help open holes for Isaac King. New quarterback Josh Harris will run some too, although he can’t forget Derek Young (68 catches, 987 yards and 12 touchdowns). The Cardinals will be fine on offense, but they must improve on the other side of the ball, where they averaged 32.5 points per game. Projected Record: 5-5, 3-4 in Southern Carolinas (fifth place) Metrolina Christian star DB/WR/RB/KR Jadus Davis won’t come off the field, and that’s a huge plus for Metrolina. Quarterback Angel Gonzalez has started parts of the last two seasons, and he’s ready for a big year.

Much is expected of the Redhawks, who come in with a fiery offense and a big, run-stuffing defensive front. With (from left) Je'marion Rushing, Omar Webb, Jaqulin Burch, Elijah Funderburke and Omarion Rushing among its stars, Monroe should be one of the conference’s best teams. Andrew Stark/UCW photo league play last year, even upsetting Marvin Ridge. Expect that trend to continue this fall with athletes on both sides of the ball who should help keep Monroe in every game. Health is always an issue, but Bennett has to play well and stay on the field if the team is to reach its full potential. Depth Chart Offense QB: Matt Bennett; RB: Tezien Grier/Jack Crump; WR: Shaleak Knotts; WR: Salen Streater; WR: Jordan Black; WR: Elliott Reid ; OL: Je'marion Rushing; OL: Omarion Rushing; OL: Montavious Watters; OL: Jadarius Perry; and OL: Omarion Huntley/Zeke Griffin.

PIEDMONT Coach: Jonathon Castator, first season 2018 Record: 3-8, 1-6 in Southern Carolinas Returning Starters: Offense, 7; Defense, 6

The Rebels are ready to take the next step and feel they’ll be more competitive than in the past, especially with talent like (from left) Kyle Knox, Brooks Mushington, Daniel Morrison, Matthew Isom and (kneeling) Brock Cain. Andrew Stark/UCW photo

PARKWOOD Coach: Tim Speakman, third season (4-18) 2018 Record: 2-9, 1-6 in Southern Carolinas Returning Starters: Offense, 5; Defense, 5 Inside the Huddle The Rebels haven’t had a winning season in five years. It’s tough to move too far up the ranks in the Southern Carolina Conference, which produced two state champions last year in Weddington and Charlotte Catholic. There will be three or four very tough teams at the top again this year, but Parkwood will look to improve on the one conference win and have the talent this year to do so. Although not the fastest team in the league, all-conference do-it-all performers Austin Cain and Kyle Knox will get the Rebels going. Cain caught more than 30% of the team’s targets last season and made 84 tackles, which was second on the team. Knox was fourth in tackles and second to Cain in receiving yards. They won’t come off the field. Brock Cain has improved at quarterback and is in line for a big season. Linebacker Daniel Morrison led the team in tackles and is a big, physical presence

to help lead a much-improved defense. Bottom Line The Rebels aren’t ready to compete for a league title just yet, but they should win several games this year and be much more competitive in many more. Running back Sametrious Drakeford could be a difference-maker, but Parkwood will surprise a lot of people. Depth Chart: Offense QB: Brock Cain; RB: Sametrious Drakeford/ Brandon Logan; H-Back: Austin Cain; WR: Brooks Mushington; WR: Kyle Knox; WR: Wyne McGriff; OL: Matt Eisen; OL: Trenn Yetter; OL: Amir Joseph; OL: Jacob Baker; and OL: Zach Bevelhymer.

Inside the Huddle The Panthers haven’t won more than three games since 2015 and haven’t had a winning season in six years, yet there is optimism around the program starting with “Coach Cas,” a former Porter Ridge assistant. Piedmont will again rely on their two-headed backfield monster of Connor Purser and Troy Hagin, who return after running for 1,900 yards and 13 touchdowns between them. But after running the ball on 83% of their offensive snaps last year, the team is looking to open it up and throw some more with quarterback Henry Saunders. Part of the redesigned offense will feature junior Brooks Gsell, who will be asked to a lot this season. The Panthers are also very happy with their collection of receivers, including Evan Sawyer and Caleb Baucom. A big change will also be at tight end, where defensive standout Ty Nicholas and fellow tight end Nic Fincher will look to get more involved. The offensive line, led by Colby Williams, returns nearly intact from last season and will be very good. Gsell leads the secondary, which features Caleb Baucom and Clint Danielson if he

doesn’t win the quarterback job. Also look out for freshman Layton Duke, who will start at corner from Day 1 and is an exceptional talent. Nicholas, who plays both sides of the ball, is a disruptor at defensive end. Eli Vinn and Williams round out the defensive front. Harrison Davis was second on the team in tackles and leads a solid linebacking core. Bottom Line The Panthers should be more competitive, but significant change in the Southern Carolinas standings will not be made overnight, although it looks like they’re heading in that direction. Depth Chart Offense QB: Henry Saunders; RB: Connor Purser/Troy Hagin; WR: Brooks Gsell; WR: Evan Sawyer/Quame McClendon; WR: Caleb Baucom/Austin Holton; TE: Ty Nicholas/Nic Fincher; OL: Colby Williams; OL: Matt Austin; OL: Patrick Dennehy; OL: Will McNeil; and OL: Will Hart/Luke James. Davis, Colby Girard, Luke Roffler and Tommy Miller form one of the best secondaries in the county. Projected Record: 8-2 Cannon Davis takes over at Forest Hills quarterback for a team filled with elite playmakers such as running backs Ahmad Stafford, Markyle Crowder,Tyquan Rushing and Queshawn Blakeney. The Yellow Jackets averaged more than 23 points per game last season and should have very little problem matching that. But for the team to improve much from the three wins in 2018 the defense has to get much better. Projected Record: 4-7, 2-2 in Rocky River 2A Porter Ridge returns two offensive starters in linemen Sean Ahaotu-Simelane and Jason Gonzlaez, but watch out for some of the skill guys including receiver/running back Kirkland Harris, receiver Nick Horstkamp and running backs Brandon Perry and Alex Chapman. New quarterback Mason Cox has looked great this summer and is more than capable of leading that group. Projected Record: 6-5; 4-3 in Southwestern 4A

CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC Coach: Mike Brodowicz, sixth season (73-5) 2018 Record: 15-1, 7-0 in Southern Carolinas Returning Starters: Offense, 5: Defense, 4 Inside the Huddle The two-time defending champs have gone 31-1 over the past two years, but lost 31 seniors – and at least 13 major contributors – from that team, so this must be a down year, right? Don’t count on it. The Cougars' bread and butter is still their running game. They are loaded on the left side of the offensive line with returning starters Davis Hodgens, Matthew Hayek and left tackle Malik McGowan, a 6-foot-4, 330-pound North Carolina commit. Taking advantage of that will be running backs Paul Neel, Lamagea McDowell and Garrett McKernan. McDowell is the battering ram at 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, but he ran for 1,270 yards and 12 touchdowns. Neel accounted for over 900 yards of total offense and scored 11 rushing TDs. McKernan, a converted tight end, is expected to excel in the 2-back position, which is a hybrid running back/

tight end position. The Cougars did lose a lot defensively, but linebackers Ty Foley, Billy Brewer, Liam Barbee and Jacob Schachte have all had close to 100-tackle seasons. Those guys are the key. Although Catholic will be new in spots, they are still big up front and quick in the backfield. Watch Connor Daughtrey, Ariel Rodriguez and Davis Barnette as new full-time starters. Bottom Line Sure, the characters have changed, but the Cougars are still an elite program under coach Brodowicz and will win a ton of games. Plus, when the weather gets cold, the Cougar run game takes over. They’re very tough to beat. Depth Chart Offense QB: Jake Smith; RB: Lamagea McDowell; 4-Back: Paul Neel; 2-Back/TE: Garrett McKernan; WR: Luke Lewis; TE: Ethan Major;

Inside the Huddle The Mavs started super hot last season, but fizzled out with four straight losses and a .500 finish that was a program-wide disappointment. They’ve moved on. Coach Aubrey Carter said he’s most excited about his quality depth at nearly every position and his playmakers that will help ease quarterback Sully McDermott’s transition to full-time starter. McDermott should put up huge numbers in this offense, and he has some big targets to throw to, including Ian Hutter (74 receptions, 874 yards) and Bryce Kennon. Tight end Aidan Twobly is another big body who should find work around the goal line and will help with the run game. There are plenty of options to turn to at running back, including Daniel Daenecke and Jacob Terwilliger. The O-line will likely start five seniors, including Sean O’Brien who is one of the county’s best two-way linemen. Defensively, the Mavs will be more than solid up front with O’Brien, Tavion Breland and space-eater Geremiah Sherman. The secondary is also a big strength with guys like Hutter and Jack Makarewicz patrolling the air. One question could be at linebacker, where that group has some game experience, but none of them have been full-time starters before this season. Another weapon the Mavs can lean on is the big leg of 6-foot-5 Caden Noonkester, who will kick and punt. Bottom Line Last year was hopefully just a blip on the radar, but the

It only pushes us harder. Now we want to succeed for the people who were there before us and it definitely gives us a new drive and motivation this season.”

Andrew Stark: With four straight losses down the stretch, last season probably didn’t end the way you wanted. How do you come into this year with a different mindset? Chase Speicher: It only pushes us harder. Now we want to succeed for the people who were there before us and it definitely gives us a new drive and motivation this season.

• Chase Speicher

AS: Coach Carter has been there for a while now and has his systems in place. Even so, what are going to be the differences this year? CS: I think the communication is easier and everyone is on the same page. Last year, we had little mistakes here and there, but we’re going to tighten it up and be on the same page. AS: There are a lot of new faces, but this is a proud program that will make everyone forget the end of last year. How is this program able to bounce back when it needs to? CS: We have some younger guys stepping up and playing big roles on the field, and we have some seniors who will get their chance this year. We just need to have a good year and put it all together. Kirkland Harris, Porter Ridge Key stat: Averaged over eight yards per carry as a reserve last season. Andrew Stark: The senior class last season was very good and led you guys to the regional finals. Now there are a lot of guys hungry to step in and make their name. That has to be exciting, right? Kirkland Harris: Those were some pretty good seniors, and they definitely showed us how to do it and paved the road but we had a lot of young talent, too. We’ll be straight with what we have. AS: Coach Hertz has said you’re going to be a really big part of the offense this season. How do you get yourself ready for that kind of roll, and especially the way he likes to run the football? KH: I just have a love for the game. I’m always ready to go, but it helps with the teammates that I have. Knowing I have them backing me up, I feel like I can do anything.

AS: You guys play in a tough conference with Butler and Myers Park, but you almost beat Myers Park and aren’t backing down from any of those teams. What is your mindset heading into the season knowing it’s going to be tough again? KH: It’s tough, but our coaches put us through a lot during the offseason and in our practices, so we’re ready.

spective, Sun Valley is probably more talked about for who it lost (all-American quarterback Sam Howell) as much if not more than who is returning. There are a lot of talent still here, so what’s it going to take to put it all together? TR: We have a special bond. Just because we lost one dude doesn’t mean we’re going to fall out. We’re going to prove them all wrong.

Tacory Robinson, Sun Valley Key stat: Robinson ran for 992 yards as a sophomore, but injuries and scheme limited him to 250 last Robinson season. He’s healthy and ready for a big year.

AS: You guys are loaded offensively with a good line blocking for you. What do you need to do to make this a successful season? TR: We take ourselves out of the game when we’re down, so we need to stay mentally focused this year and stay up.

Andrew Stark: You’re a threeyear starter now coming into your senior season on a team that’s won a school record 21 games over the past two seasons. With guys looking at you for leadership, does you role change at all? Tacory Robinson: Not really. I’m just trying to get back into rhythm, but I’m excited to have this O-line with Michael (Gonzalez) and Mason (Thompson) blocking for me. I can’t go there without them. AS: From a state-wide per-

I just have a love for the game. I’m always ready to go, but it helps with the teammates that I have. Knowing I have them backing me up, I feel like I can do anything.” • Kirkland Harris

Billy Brewer and Ty Foley, Charlotte Catholic Key stat: Linebackers Billy Brewer (6.6 tackles per game) and Ty Foley (7.7) wreak havoc on opposing ball carries. Andrew Stark: You guys are the two-time defending state champs, yet people are probably thinking this is the year to pounce on Catholic due to all you lost. That has to get old a little, right? Billy Brewer: We obviously lost a lot of talent, but we have a lot of guys coming back and everyone is going to be making plays. The young guys will have to play better, but we have plenty of talent. If we get the right schemes and stuff, we’ll be fine. AS: Ty, same thing. There’s a lot of talent in your locker room. Ty Foley: We have players that have been starting for three and

even four years, so we know we have guys who are going to come out and make plays for us. That’s the bottom line. We definitely have the talent to make a run at a state championship, but we need the guys who haven’t been there the whole time to fit in. AS: Coach Brodowicz’s record speaks for itself here, but what is it about his coaching style that leads to such consistency? BB: He’s been coaching for long enough where he knows what to tell us and where we need to be. He just knows how to win, I guess is what it is. TF: He does a really good job of simpling it down for us so that we know when we’re out there we can look at our keys and plays. We don’t have to think, we just make our moves and go. BB: He instills to never think, just play. We know what to do so we’re not out there having to think about it, we just know where to be. Jadus Davis, Metrolina Christian Key stats: 896 rush yards on 100 carries; 41 catches, 632 receiving yards and 20 total TDs; 2,194 yards total offense; 30 tackles, three INTs, eight pass breakups Andrew Stark: I heard you may have left Metrolina, but I’m glad you came back. What were you going to miss most about being here? Jadus Davis: I’m really happy to be here. It’s more of a home, I feel very welcome and it’s my senior year, so I didn’t want to go through the process of changing schools and everything. But this is home to me. AS: You came within a ridicu-

lously crazy fourth-down play of winning a title last year. You have yourself and all of these guys back in the secondary, and Angel Gonzalez and the offense should be fun to watch. What will it take for you guys to build off that? JD: We have to practice hard, and our O-line has to be the best that it can be every single day. Our seniors have to push the underclassmen, and we have to believe we can do it. AS: You did everything playing at running back, receiver, kick returner, cornerback and whatever else was needed. What do you do for an encore? JD: I want to try my best to help my school win a state championship - whatever that means. Connor Purser, Piedmont Key stat: Ran for 1,228 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior last season. Andrew Stark: Purser You have a new coach and a new energy at Piedmont. How has everything been going these past few months? Connor Purser: It’s been going great. He pushes us harder, wants us to get better and makes sure that we’re going to get better while you’re doing it. Everything is up tempo, but he takes the time and gives us all of the resources to succeed. He’s got us going in the right direction for sure. AS: You had a great season last see COVER GUYS, Page 2B

AS: You know you want to run the football, but it’s a lot of responsibility on you and the line. How do you prepare for that? PG: I need to make sure the newcomers - and especially the freshmen and sophomores - aren’t messing around in practice and staying on top of their responsibilities. If they do that, we’re good.

year, but they plan on using you a lot more even this season. How do you prepare for that? CP: I’m blessed, obviously, to be able to do what I did last year. My expectations are high for this year, and I’m ready for it.

Weddington has won two of the past three state titles, including last year. Their high-powered offense lost a lot of pieces, but the ones that remain will give opposing coaches plenty of indigestion with (from left) Chase Turner, Will Shipley, Dante Casicola, Landyn Backey and Malik Mustapha. Andrew Stark/UCW photo

AS: What is that is going to make 2019 a successful season for Piedmont? CP: We need to play together and not be selfish. We were a little selfish last year with a few players, and you can’t be selfish and win games.

Best Secondary: Metrolina Christian The Warriors have always been an explosive offensive team under coach Thomas Langley, but they turned the corner last season because of their defense. That won’t change this season with the county’s best secondary, featuring (from left) Luke Roffler, Colby Girard, Tommy Miller and Jadus Davis. Andrew Stark/UCW photo

Best Offense: Monroe The Redhawks are going to turn some heads this season with their collection of skill guys that will rival anyone in the county. Phifer Griffin, Metrolina Christian Key stat: The six-footsix, 290-pound offensive tackle has committed to Illinois. Griffin Andrew Stark: You had offers from a number of other schools. Why did you choose Illinois, and how has the recruiting process gone? Phifer Griffin: It’s been fun and a great experience to have the ability to get the exposure you’re talking about. Being able to tour different schools, meet new coaches and have a bunch of contact with these people has been really neat. Illinois made me feel like family. They made it seem like I will have early playing time and that I was needed and not just wanted. AS: What are your goals for this season? PG: We’re definitely going to be a run-first team, and we have a lot of chemistry that we’ve gained throughout my four years playing. That, and the ability to move different players around the field in different positions, is what’s go-

Derek Young Jr., Union Academy Key stats: 68 catches, 897 receiving yards and 12 TDs; 78 tackles and five passes defended Young Jr. on defense Andrew Stark: You had a huge statistical season. What do you take away from that as far as you’re involved in nearly every positive play for this team and a huge focal point of opponents? DYJ: I was a part of a good team, and now that all of those seniors left, we need to take over that. Me and Phifer are the leaders on this team, and this year we’re going to help carry this team and make sure we make it back to the playoffs. AS: You want to run the ball more, so you’ll have to block a lot, too. How much pride do you take in that part of your game? DYJ: I take a lot of pride in it because I’ll do anything to help my team win. Whether I’m getting the ball or not, I’m doing all I can to help us win. AS: Defensively, it was kind of a struggle last year. How are you going to be better in 2019? DYJ: Our linebackers and line are better this year, so we have more pressure.

Inside the Huddle For the next two seasons, Will Shipley will continue to make the price of admission worth it. He is the No.1ranked all-purpose running back in the country and is sensational on both sides of the ball. He’s the biggest star on a team full of them even after the Warriors graduated 16 seniors that included at least eight starters. Defensively, they allowed 12.5 points per game, and this team can come close to that with Elon commit Trey Alsbrooks and second leading tackler and big Division I target Alec Mock at linebacker. Mock is a terror at middle linebacker, and holds more than a dozen DI offers. Shipley, Bryson Parker and Malik Mustapha help form an above-average secondary. Offensively, Shipley will headline the bunch, but Dante Casicola filled in last year at quarterback and did a great job. He’ll have plenty of other weapons, including Chase Turner, Colby Barsz and Will Cobb. They will be heavily involved.

The Warriors have already retooled and are looking to defend their 3-AA title with (back, from left) Dante Casicola, Alec Mock, Trey Alsbrooks (Kneeling) Will Shipley and Malik Mustapha. Andrew Stark/UCW photo who made 70 of 71 extra points, made 18 field goals and averaged 40 yards per punt. They will be just fine.

Bottom Line The Cardinals were disappointed with last season. They will be making changes to try to keep the ball in their possession longer and switching to a 5-3 to help cut down on the run game and keep their opponents contained. The Pac-7 is a brutal 1A league, but the Cardinals should be better.

Inside the Huddle The losses started mounting for the Cardinals after a 3-2 start last season as they lost six straight games to close it out. But the page has turned, and coach Justin Frashier is optimistic about the changes he’s made. Offensively, they will run mostly a wishbone-type offense spearheaded by new converted quarterback Josh Harris. Ideally, running back Isaac King would get 20 carries or more, but he’ll split time with Parkwood transfer Jarvis Landry. When the Cardinals do throw it, athletic receiver Derek Young Jr. (68 catches, 987 yards and 12 touchdowns) will most often benefit from it, although Jalen Hickman and Colson Honeycutt will get plenty of balls thrown their way, too. Up front, Illinois commit Phifer Griffin leads the biggest line Frashier has had in his five years. Defensively, the Cardinals will use a 5-3 defense with Griffin, Young and Josh Pyrock leading the way. Colson Honeycutt, Elijah Landry and Elijah Williams make up a great linebacker corps while King and Landry lead a good, yet thin, secondary. The Cardinals haven’t yet settled on a kicker or punter.

Union Academy lost six straight games down the stretch and finished near the cellar of their conference. Mega-stars Derek Young Jr. and Phifer Griffin are hoping to turn around the fortunes of a team much more talented than last season’s record would suggest. Andrew Stark/UCW photo

The 3-AA champs open the season atop the Super 7 despite graduating a good chunk of their starters from a season ago. But the defense won’t skip a beat with their collection of star linebackers, the secondary is very good and they have they have the guys up front to bang with anyone. Offensively, this team is multi-dimensional, but it doesn’t hurt to have the nation’s No. 1 running back lingering in your backfield in Will Shipley. There is a lot to like here, and the Warriors have a real shot to run the table if they can finally topple Charlotte Catholic. 2. Charlotte Catholic Speaking of Catholic, the Cougars come in as the “1A” team in the county after winning the 3-A title last season. Like with Weddington, they lost a lot but they are also nearly unbeatable since Mike Brodowicz took over as coach. They will be able to run the ball at will with Lamagea McDowell, that huge offensive line and the Wing-T they employ. Jacob Schachte and the linebackers are the best foursome in the county. They have some bigrun stuffers up front to force teams to pass on them where the above-average secondary will take over. There aren’t many weaknesses despite the loss of their huge senior class. 3. Metrolina Christian The Warriors have gone from the little private school trying to find its way among the big boys of the NCISAA to nearly becoming a state champion. The defense will be outstanding with two-way stars Jadus Davis, Colby Girard and Luke Roffler patrolling. Most of the rest of the defense returns intact, which should put the Warriors right back in the title hunt. As a luxury, even if the defense isn’t quite as good as last season, the offense will be exceptional with quarterback Angel Gonzalez, receivers Jed Wooten and Davis and new running back Luke Gaskins. 4. Monroe

The Redhawks appeared in and out of the Super 7 last season, but they feel like a mainstay and one of the top teams in the

Southern Carolinas this year. Quarterback Matt Bennett started last year at Ardrey Kell and can make all the throws. He’ll benefit from throwing to star receivers Shaleak Knotts and Salen Streater, who will both accrue gaudy statistics in the Redhawks' passing game, and the running of Metrolina Christian transfer Jack Crump, who surpassed 1,000 yards on the ground last season. Towering twins Omarian and Te'marion Rushing will anchor a defense that should be able to slow the high-powered Southern Carolinas offenses especially if linebackers Crump and Damian Sanchez have big years. 5. Sun Valley

The Spartans have won a school record 21 games during the past two seasons, but enter a new era. Skill guys like Tacory Robinson (nearly 1,000 rush yards in 2017), Decue Wilson (740 rush yards last year) and Gavin Blackwell (51 catches, 1,136 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns) will key the offense, but the Spartans are far more than just finesse with a line featuring Michael Gonzalez. That side of the ball will be fine, but there are some questions about the defense. 6. Porter Ridge

Kirkland Harris, Brandon Perry and Alex Chapman will be tasked with taking pressure off new quarterback Mason Cox as the Pirates welcome nine starters to that side of the ball. There probably will be an adjustment period to get that side of the ball up to speed, especially early on. But it won’t last long as Porter Ridge is too good on both sides of the ball not to be among the county’s top teams. 7. Marvin Ridge

The Mavs are the biggest mystery team of the season to me. While receiver Ian Hutter turned into a bonafide star last season and new quarterback Sully McDermott flashed signs of brilliance at times last year, there are questions surrounding the run game and the offensive line. The Mavs are also introducing six new starters to the defensive side of the ball, so their season will depend on how quickly everyone can become acclimated to their new roles. - Andrew Stark
