INDIAN TRAIL – Town leaders approved rezoning May 12 to allow for a new hotel concept at The Hub, a multi-use development being built at U.S. 74 and Indian Trail Road. The Moser Group lost the original hotel brand and developer due to the pandemic, according to Mackenzie Moser, broker-in-charge. However, the hotel has been upgraded to a Hilton brand. The five-story hotel will be a dual-brand concept shared by Hilton brands Home2 Suites and Tru. Moser explained Home2 Suites specializes in suite-style rooms with kitchenettes while Tru is a lifestyle brand focused on all types of customers.

Each brand will have 75 rooms. They'll share a 1,250-square-foot conference room. Vic Shah, of Om Ventures Hospitality, told the town council that the conference room will be designed more for business use during traditional business hours as opposed to a banquet-style space. The proposal had to go through the rezoning process again because it was significantly different from the original plan, according to Planning Director Brandi Deese. The previous concept was four stories with 105 rooms. “I know a lot of business owners and people will be very happy to have a hotel in Indian Trail,” Councilman Todd Barber said. N.C. Rep. More than 650 graduates will cross the stage during four in-person ceremonies May 14 to 16, the last a much-delayed celebration of 2020 grads.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this year’s graduates, as well as those who finished their degrees in the midst of the COVID outbreak, their moment in the spotlight,” Wingate President Rhett Brown said. “Fortunately, rising vaccination rates and the governor’s loosening of gathering see GRADUATION, Page 5A

MONROE – Elder law is personal for Lisanne Mangum. She became a caregiver at age 14 to a grandmother with Alzheimer's disease. Seeing there weren't many resources available, she grew up wanting to work with older adults. Mangum eventually worked her way up to running assisted living centers as a health care administrator, but she felt drawn to law. “On the legal side, I can provide them with resources when they're going through a really tough time in their lives,” Mangum said. “My family didn't have that growing up.” Mangum has worked with Collins Elder Law Group for about two years. The firm helps clients with estate, retirement and Medicaid planning; long-term care, assisted living and

WINGATE – Wingate University will be enlisting in a group of stakeholders to determine next steps after learning its namesake was connected to slavery. The university wasn't aware of this until President Rhett Brown recently received information from Nathan Hatch, president of Wake Forest University. “This truth hurts,” Brown said. “It casts a shadow over our university, my alma mater, and is not in keeping with who we are today, what we Brown value and how we strive to be more inclusive for the students who study here and the people who work here.” Washington Manly Wingate served as president of Wake Forest University when the institution sold 16 enslaved people to fund an endowment. Wingate University was named after the administrator 17 years after he passed away at the suggestion of the son of a trustee, who was teaching at Wake Forest. Wingate issued a statement acknowledging its namesake's connection to slavery. “Knowing that the stain of past transgressions can never be eliminated and that the debt to people of color can never be repaid, Wingate University officials do believe this deeply upsetting news can serve as an opportunity for reflection, reconciliation and growth,” according to the statement. Wake Forest renamed Wingate Hall to May 7, 1860 Hall after the date the slaves were sold. Since the death of George Floyd last year, many communities have renamed landmarks to severe ties with slavery. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools renamed Vance High School and Barringer Academic Center after prominent African Americans while Union County Public Schools eliminated the Rebels mascot at Parkwood High School. “While we can’t erase history, we can learn from it,” said Joe Patterson, chairman of Wingate's board of trustees. “The board of trustees eagerly awaits the group’s recommendations on how to move forward.”

Victory in Europe Day, generally known as VE Day (United Kingdom) or V-E Day (North America), is a day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May 1945.

On Aug. 31, 1949, Defense Secretary Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the armed forces under one agency -- the Department of Defense.

The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Memorial Day is a somber holiday dedicated to honor military fallen, with a special focus on those killed during military service or through enemy contact.

The instrument of surrender signed 7 May 1945 stipulated that all hostilities must cease at 23:01 (CET), 8 May 1945, just an hour before midnight. Since that time would be already 9 May in the USSR, most Soviet states including Russia celebrated Victory Day on 9 May.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated the third Saturday in May.

Wear a poppy to honor those who have worn our nation’s uniform. Poppy donations are used for programs that support veterans, the military community and their families. Poppies are offered through the American Legion Auxiliary

Other Important Days in May National Day of Prayer May 7, 6, 2020 2021 May

It was first commemorated on May 30, 1868 at the Arlington National Cemetery by future president James A. Garfield with these words: “We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke, but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, made immortal their patriotism and their virtue” In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be commemorated on the last Monday of May.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. The formal memorial is on May 15, and Police Week is the calendar week in which the memorial falls.

Expo connects older adults to community resources by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com

INDIAN TRAIL – There are three types of people that attend an expo – those who go from table to table looking for freebies, those who look for something very specific and those who talk to everyone there. I used to be in the freebie category but I have evolved into one of those people that talks your ear off. Our newspapers held our first event in more than a year on May 7 at Chestnut Square Park. We called it the Thrive Outside Micro Expo. The scaled-down event was designed to connect older adults to resources in the community that can potentially improve the quality of their lives. Some of the 20 vendors at the expo were Beltone, Charlotte Dermatology, Collins Elder Law Group, Ivy Rehab, Pineville Rehabilitation & Living Center and Tar Heal Pharms. Each of them had something unique

to offer older adults. I got to talking with just about every vendor and realized many of them have cool stories. Eric Alksnis reinvented himself by launching Erinis Group LLC this past year after working in sales. He views himself as an accountability partner for people trying to position themselves for an improved financial future. “People need help,” he said. “I personally got out of debt four years ago and it was life-changing for me.” Dr. Crystal Myers has been a physical therapist for 10 years, but she started her own venture, Meaningful Movements, in July. She had envisioned going on her own two years down the road, but she started developing the idea during downtime. “It was great because a lot of people didn't want to go into the traditional health care setting,” Myers told me. We'll share some of their stories in upcoming editions, but in the meantime, you can check out photos from the event on our Facebook pages.

verything I know about soccer, I’ve learned from watching Apple TV’s hit show, “Ted Lasso.” If you haven’t watched, you should. It’s one of the only “feel-good” shows on any streaming channel or cable network. It’s a great story about a hokey American coach who really has no business coaching soccer at all, but he manages to instill some pretty amazing core values into his team of underdogs. Now that Apple TV owes me some promotional dollars for that plug, (just kidding) that one is on the house, I would like to share something about south Charlotte’s newest soccer team, Stumptown AC. Their season opener was May 8, when they won against the Maryland Bobcats. But, their first home game here in Matthews was May 12 at the Sportsplex. I love local teams and this one is no different. I also love seeing children get involved in their community. And, of course, having this new team in town got me thinking. What if we had a local school-aged kid be our sports editor for a day and cover the one of the new team’s practices and attend

a home game? I know there are a lot of kids out there who are incredible writers who just happen to love sports as well. If this sounds like your child, I’d love to hear about them. Please have them email me about why they love soccer and why they’d love to be our Junior Sports Editor for a Day. We will pick one lucky kiddo and coordinate with the good folks at Stumptown AC to have them attend practice to interview the players and put their unique spin on the story. Historically, capital credits are retired (paid) in the fall of each year. However, in June 2020, the co-op retired $3.48 million worth of capital credits to eligible members in an effort to assist those impacted by the pandemic. Checks were issued and mailed to the last known address associated with the member’s account. Any checks that were returned/marked undeliverable by the U.S. Postal Service are listed on our website. To see if your name is listed, visit unionpower.com/member-resources-services/capital-credits, then type your name into the search bar. If your name is listed or if you have questions, please call 704-289-3145 to speak with a customer service representative. Union Power would like to return all outstanding capital credit checks to their rightful owners. Remind your family, friends, and former neighbors to check for their names, too, as they may have moved away from the service area without leaving a forwarding address. It is the duty of Union Power Cooperative to return all unclaimed capital credit checks to the State of North Carolina or to the state of last known address, if different. Union Power Cooperative is a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative, which provides electricity and energy-related services to more than 80,000 member accounts throughout Union, Stanly, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, and Rowan counties.

Pump prices rise as pipeline targeted by hackers CHARLOTTE – Gas prices in the Carolinas have increased significantly on the week, as the Colonial Pipeline outage threatens pump prices and possibly supply, according to AAA. AAA forecasts gas prices to climb even more this week in reaction to the shutdown, which delivers approximately 45% of all fuel to the East Coast.

“The impact of this pipeline outage will vary regionally,” said Tiffany Wright, spokesperson, AAA – The Auto Club Group in the Carolinas. “The outage will have implications on both gasoline supply and prices. The longer it is offline, the larger the impact on the East Coast.” The Colonial Pipeline announced it was the victim of a cybersecurity attack over Mother's

Day weekend, and as a precaution, shut down the pipeline, which runs from Texas to New York Harbor. The pipeline is a primary fuel pipeline for North Carolina. Some lateral lines have reopened, but there was no word prior to The Weekly's deadline of when the mainline, including the gasoline line, will be operational. This prompted Gov. Roy Cooper

to sign May 10 an executive order declaring a state of emergency in North Carolina and temporarily suspending motor vehicle fuel regulations to ensure adequate fuel supply throughout the state. “Today’s emergency declaration will help North Carolina prepare for any potential motor vehicle fuel supply interruptions across the state and ensure motorists are able

to have access to fuel,” Cooper said. On the week, North Carolina’s gas price average increased by 6 cents to $2.73 as of May 10. This is 10 cents more expensive than last month and $1.06 more expensive than a year ago. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Hann estimated May 12 that 71% of Charlotte gas stations had no gasoline.

Stein: Pay taxes, not scammers by Josh Stein N.C. Attorney General

Nearly 30 million visitors traveled to the Queen City in 2019, spending $7.8 billion in local businesses, attractions, restaurants and hotels across the region. COVID-19 put a dent in the tourism industry, but officials have reason to be optimistic. CMG file photos

Tourism officials optimistic about rebound

CHARLOTTE – Before the pandemic, travel and tourism in the Charlotte region had experienced 10 consecutive years of growth, generating $7.8 billion in direct visitor spending, employing 147,000 residents and producing more than $125 million in hospitality tax collections in 2019. That strong growth trend plummeted in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19. Several positive signs are pointing to recovery – welcome news as the hospitality industry observed National Travel and Tourism Week from May 2 to 8. “We certainly have many more reasons to be optimistic now than we did at the start of the year,” said Tom Murray, CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. “Our industry has

been devastated, but we have proven to be resilient – that’s the power of travel. Both the research and our customers are telling us that things are improving, and Charlotte is poised to come out strong as leisure, group and corporate travel returns. Before the pandemic, we were a city on the rise and I’m confident we will be again.” The CRVA has positioned the hospitality industry for recovery through strategic sales and marketing efforts, health and safety tools and awareness campaigns over the past 14 months. A “Rediscover Charlotte” awareness campaign is underway in target markets and has generated more than $15.5 million in hotel revenue and see TOURISM, Page 4B

Nonprofit leader leaves First Tee for TreesCharlotte CHARLOTTE – Jane Singleton Myers has succeeded Chuck Cole as executive director of TreesCharlotte. Myers, the first woman named to the post, most recently served as executive director for The First Tee of Greater Charlotte, which under her leadership became a top 10 chapter among the organization’s 150 affiliates. Prior to First Tee, Myers worked at Bank of America for 14 years in roles that included finance, investment banking, human resources, marketing, communications and corporate services. “Jane comes to us with great experience in both the corporate and non-profit sectors,” Board Chairman Thruston Morton said. “Her experience, drive and determination and ability to connect with people are key strengths she

will bring to bear at TreesCharlotte, as we seek to preserve and expand the tree canopy in our fast-growing city.” Myers will work to grow the 10-year-old nonprofit as the city faces significant population growth, aging trees and increased storms and environmental hazards. “With approximately 100 people moving to Charlotte each day, navigating the rapid rate at which Charlotte is expanding is critically important,” Myers said. “This mission is key to not only the health of Charlotte’s people but the city as well. We must preserve and grow The City of Trees.” Myers grew up in the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area and graduated from Guilford College. Cole retired as executive director after nearly four years as executive director.

This year, the IRS and the N.C. Department of Revenue have both extended the deadline for filing your income taxes to Stein May 17. That gives you more time to file your taxes, but it also gives scammers more time to try to trick you into sending them your money. Every tax season, scammers will try to scam people by getting their W-2 information. Sometimes, they’ll spoof your company’s HR or accounting teams’ email addresses and request your employee information. They might also pretend to be the IRS and call or email you asking you to verify income or other tax-related information. If you’re not sure whether these messages are real, do NOT respond and check with your employer directly. If the email is not legitimate, you can report it to your IT department and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Guard your personal and financial information closely during tax season. Your email is not a secure way to share information – don’t email or share your Social Security or bank account numbers. Don’t trust sudden emails that claim your tax refund is ready and available, or password resent links so you can claim your refund. Report unsolicited emails to phishing@irs. gov. If you’re using a website to e-file taxes, make sure it’s legitimate. Look for the lock icon next to the address bar and a URL that begins with https. Do not trust anyone who calls you from the IRS and demands tax payments or threatens you with arrest if you don’t pay immediately. Legitimate government officials do NOT contact you to threaten arrest. If the IRS needs to contact you about your tax debt, it will do so via a letter. Don’t answer these calls or respond to these messages. You can always call the IRS directly with questions. And if these callers are asking you to pay what you owe through a prepaid debit card, gift card or by wire transfer, hang up! It’s definitely a scam. Scammers will also try to get their hands on your tax refunds by filing tax returns in your name and then collecting your money. If you receive a notice from the IRS stating that more than one tax return was filed in your name, contact the IRS immediately using the contact information available in the letter. It has been a year of immense financial hardships for so many North Carolinians. Losing your tax refunds or identity to a scammer would only add to your pain. Please protect your personal and financial information, and if you think you or someone you know has been the victim of an IRS scam, file a complaint with our office at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or https://ncdoj.gov/complaint. Josh Stein serves as North Carolina attorney general.

124,000 room nights sold since October 2020. A local in-market campaign called “Together Again in Charlotte” will debut this summer to give residents inspiring ways to reconnect with loved ones across the city. The $126.9 million expansion of the Charlotte Convention Center, slated for completion later this summer, will be a strong selling point with meeting and conference planners looking to book business or give attendees a new experience. The recently completed $20 million connector facility between Bojangles Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium, which added meeting space and expanded on-site catering capabilities, is another new offering for local and out-of-town gatherings.

Top 10 reasons to get your legs checked out – You might have a vein problem Varicose veins are a widespread problem that affects millions of Americans. Many people are unaware that vein problems can affect the legs in various ways. Here are 10 reasons to get your legs checked out. 1. Unexplained leg pain Vein problems commonly cause lowgrade aching discomfort in the legs. Many people with vein problems report their legs feel heavy, weak, and tired. Leg symptoms can occur any time of the day, but commonly occur towards the end of the day, or after being on your feet for long periods of time. People with vein problems frequently develop leg cramps and leg restlessness, which can interfere with getting a peaceful night’s sleep. 2. Unsightly spider veins Spider veins are small skin surface veins that vary in color from pink to purple to blue. Normally spider veins not medically serious and are primarily of cosmetic concern. However, some people with spider veins will experience tingling, itching, or burning discomfort. A range of treatment options are available that can eliminate spider veins. 3. Bulging varicose veins Veins that protrude and bulge through the surface of the skin are known as varicose veins. Many people with varicose veins will have an underlying condition called venous reflux, where the valves in the upstream veins have become dys-

functional, typically due to weakening of the vein wall. For most people, varicose veins are a nuisance problem, but they can cause symptoms including pain and tenderness and can predispose to superficial blood clots. 4. Skin discoloration Vein problems can result in darkening and discoloration of the skin around the ankle area and lower leg. Typically skin discoloration is maximum maximal between the ankle and the upper calf. 5. Leg swelling Many people with vein problems will develop intermittent or progressive swelling of their lower legs and ankles. In this situation, leg swelling is caused by increased pressure within the veins, which results in fluid leaking from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. The medical name for leg swelling is edema. Prominent “sock marks” above the ankle at the end of the day is often the first sign of leg swelling.
