iNSiDE Editor's pop culture corner • The ninth season of “Married at First Sight,” which airs June 12 on Lifetime, follows Charlotte couples as they stumble through the ups and downs of marriage with complete strangers. I had a fun chat with Dr. Viviana Coles, who is a relationship expert guiding the couples, that we’ll publish soon. • “To Have & To Hold” is a little bit closer to everyday life, delving into issues related to finances, intimacy and parenthood. The show, which features Charlotte couples, debuts June 1 on OWN. • Why are people complaining so much about the final season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” feeling rushed? I’d say 90 percent of TV shows go unresolved due to cancellation or the network ordering fewer episodes in a season. I thought the ending was satisfying and left viewers with enough rope to arrive at their own theories or predictions as to what will happen with characters. – Justin Vick

We spend so much of the year counting down the days until summer only for the season to come and go without us noticing. Our 80 Days of Summer edition is a guide to maximizing your time. The dozens of ideas that follow spare you from annoying your friends with complaints about there not being anything to do.
If you're staying around the Queen City this summer, you should... Cheer on the Charlotte Knights There are several reasons why the Charlotte Knights are the hottest ticket in minor league baseball. For starters, the Triple-A affiliate plays at BB&T Ballpark, where the Charlotte skyline serves as the perfect backdrop for the stars of tomorrow. Second, promotions like Bark at the Ballpark and Friday Night Fireworks are just plain fun. Other intangibles include affordable tickets, competitive games and summer nights.

Watch films made locally If you find yourself mumbling under your breath during a Marvel Studios trailer how Hollywood is devoid of original ideas, then you may want to give the 10th annual Joedance Film Festival a try. Think Sundance, but with this festival, the submissions all have connections to the Carolinas. Named after the late Joe Restaino, a 20-year-old who lost his life to cancer, the event raises money for pediatric cancer research at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital. The event takes place Aug. 1 to 3 at The Charlotte Ballet.

NASCAR stars to rappel from 10-story hotel CHARLOTTE – Matt DiBenedetto, Kurt Busch and Rusty Wallace will be among NASCAR stars rappelling 100 feet down the side of the Embassy Suites Charlotte Uptown in the fall to raise money for charity. The second annual Over the Edge Charlotte fundraising event is set for Sept. 24 and 25. Celebrities will descend the 10-story hotel on Sept. 24. The first 130 people raising $1,000 in support of their rappelling will follow on Sept. 25. “Last year my wife, Taylor, signed me up for the event without me knowing, initially because I'm afraid of heights,” said DiBenedetto, a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver. “But the event is for a great cause, so I couldn't say no.” DiBenedetto said the fundraiser helped him with his fear of heights. He's enlisted in his wife to join him this year. Nearly 100 rappellers, including seven NASCAR drivers, raised nearly $200,000 last year for The NASCAR Foundation and NASCAR Hall of Fame Foundation. Proceeds provide resources to children battling pediatric cancer and provide scholarships to children for STEM education workshops. Register at www.OverTheEdgeCharlotte. org.

AAA : Cheaper gas prices after holiday weekend CHARLOTTE – The 1.7 million Carolinians who hit the road this past Memorial Day weekend found major savings at the pump compared to last year’s holiday. Charlotte gas prices averaged $2.59 on May 28, $2.62 on May 21, $2.67 on April 28 and $2.76 on May 28, 2018. The state's $2.59 average is three cents less than a week ago, 14 cents less than last month and 20 cents less than last Memorial Day. “For most of the Carolinas, gas prices are on the decline, and that’s a trend motorists can expect to continue into early June,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA Carolinas spokesperson. “Stable crude oil prices are helping to push prices down at the pump despite tight domestic gasoline supply and high demand. An increase in demand could push prices higher, but only by a few cents.” Today’s national average is $2.82, which is cheaper than last week by two cents, last month by six cents and last year by 16 cents. Gas price averages across the nation can be found at www.gasprices.aaa.com.

REGION AROUND THE
If you'll be traveling around the region, or staying home this summer, you should... Join a book club Reading a book can be very relaxing, but sometimes you get a hold of one that makes you want to hop out of bed and tell your friends about how awesome it is. Book clubs offer an interactive element to reading. Most libraries in southern Mecklenburg and western Union counties offer them. Park Road Books in Charlotte also holds a handful of monthly book clubs, including ones for foodies and self-described geeks.
Try a three-course meal Day in and day out, you go through the drive-thru or nuke a TV dinner in the microwave. Why not give a fancy restaurant a try? Queens Feast: Charlotte Restaurant Week offers three-course meals at more than 100
of the region’s best restaurants for just $30 or $35. Places like Sante in Matthews, The Trail House in Indian Trail and dozens of eateries in SouthPark and Ballantyne have been known to participate in the January and July promotions.
$ Read books for enrichment Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Union County Public Library offer summer reading programs and dozens of education programming to prevent children’s learning skills from getting rusty. CML’s program, dubbed “Summer Break: Read, Learn, Explore,” spans June 1 to Aug. 10. Youth earn badges for the minutes of reading they log. UCPL’s program, “A Universe of Stories” runs June 1 to Aug. 3. The library system is
rewarding prizes for different age levels and hosting space-themed events.
Shop at a farmers market Farmers markets give residents the opportunity not only to support local farmers and artisans, but also connect families to fresh produce and breads at their dinner tables. Several communities have them, including Indian Trail, Matthews, Mint Hill, Monroe, Pineville, south Charlotte and Waxhaw. Most open Saturday mornings through the fall. Some like the Matthews Community Farmers Market, offer entertainment, such as cooking demonstrations and music.
Donate the gift of life Blood banks are most vulnerable during the summer as families take vacations. The American Red Cross and OneBlood, formerly Community Blood Center of the Carolinas, host blood drives throughout the region. OneBlood also collects blood daily at its Charlotte (4447 South Blvd.) and Ballantyne (12239 N. Community House Road) centers. Visit www.cbcc.us or www.redcross blood.org for details. Hang out at the mall Shopping online is convenient, but you miss out on people watching and the sweet scent of Cinnabons. Summer offers opportunities to catch up on what’s new. Build relations with police Aug. 6 marks the 36th anniversary of National Night Out, a campaign designed to build connections between communities and law enforcement. Some neighborhoods throughout Charlotte hold their own events, but some communities like Matthews, Mint Hill, Waxhaw and Indian Trail have been known to hold town-wide events or festivals that promote best-practices in safety.
Escape the monotony Trying to escape with your friends from a locked room may sound like the premise of a 2000s horror movie or a 1980s big hair action adventure show (MacGyver was the man), but it’s actually a great team-building activity. The region has several escape rooms, including Breakout Games in Pineville, Escape Risk in Matthews, Masterpiece Escapes in Indian Trail, Timed Out in south Charlotte and Waxhaw Escape in Waxhaw.

Bounce on trampolines If you want your children to beat the heat but still get out that extra energy, then an indoor trampoline park could do the trick. Urban Air Adventure Park in Mint Hill, Defy Gravity in Charlotte, as well as Sky High Sports and Sky Zone in Pineville, offer more than mere jumping up and down. These venues offer attractions like dodgeball, obstacle courses and even laser tag.

out Mecklenburg and Union counties. The Cross Charlotte Trail will connect trails from Pineville to UNC Charlotte. The Carolina Thread Trail has identified more than 1,600 miles of connected trails in several counties, including Mecklenburg and Union. The thread trail has identified 100 miles of trails in Union County. Thirteen miles currently exist, including sections in Indian Trail, Mineral Springs, Monroe and Waxhaw. have to be a stuffy affair. You don’t need a suit, top hat or monocle to enjoy the Charlotte Symphony’s Summer Pops program. Follow the group to free concerts at Stumptown Park in Matthews (June 7), Mallard Creek Recreation Center in Charlotte (June 10), McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville (June 14) and Belle Johnston Park in Pineville (June 30), just to name a few.
Embrace womanhood at convention The Southern Women’s Show combines shopping, food, fashion, beauty and health under one roof. It returns to the Charlotte Convention Center from Aug. 23 to 25. Guests so far include Miss North Carolina Laura Little and Tamara Richardson, The Southern Bell Medium. There’s also a mother-daughter look-a-like contest.
working eight days a week. Seems like you’re fixing a hole in an ocean. Well, here comes the sun in the form of FabFest, Charlotte Beatles Festival on June 15 ($30) and 16 ($25) at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Uptown Charlotte. The festival includes bands, trivia, marketplace, crafts and too much monkey business.
$ Summer safety tip: Heat kills more than 600 people in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Preventing heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion, is important for people of all ages, but extreme heat poses the greatest risk for people under age 4 and over 65, and anyone who has a pre-existing medical condition or who lives in a home without air conditioning. Find air-conditioning during hot hours, wear cool clothing, drink plenty of liquids and pay attention to heat advisories. Unprotected skin can be burned by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes, but can take up to 12 hours for the skin to show the damage. CDC recommends staying out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when its UV rays are at their highest level. Sunscreen is recommended for anyone working and playing outside in the summer, even on cloudy days. Hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves are also recommended for outdoors activities.
