Novant has several medical facilities across the Charlotte region, but Ehtisham said what sets the Ballantyne site apart is the dedication to green space in honor of the Hall family. There will be walking trails all around the property, as well as space for community events like yoga and a farmers market. “I want the community to think this is their hospital, use it as their hospital and utilize the acres around it,” Ehtisham said. “It’s not a medical complex, but more of a healing environment for the community,” he added. City Councilman Ed Driggs, who represents the Ballantyne area, has been an advocate of the project since its inception. Driggs voiced his support during the planning and development process, which included rezoning the site and a series of changes to the hospital’s planned footprint. Driggs said at the Feb. 25 groundbreaking that the new hospital will not only be more convenient for patients in south Charlotte but also alleviate the strain on bed capacity at other facilities. He added that the project also creates jobs for both construction workers and health care professionals. “This is a welcomed development,” Driggs said.

Two years from now, doctors, health care workers and medical professionals will be getting ready to welcome patients to Novant Health’s Ballantyne Medical Center off Providence Road West. Novant is investing $180 million into constructing a 168,000-square-foot, 36bed hospital and a 56,000-square-foot medical office building on 38 acres previously home to the Hall Family Farm. On Feb. 25, senior leaders from Novant Health, Robins & Morton, HDR Architecture and the city of Charlotte ceremoniously broke ground on the project, which is expected to be completed in April 2023. Saad Ehtisham, president of Novant Health Greater Charlotte Market and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, called Ballantyne Medical Center “a legacy building” for the hospital giant. “This will bring health care right into the backyard of the communities we serve,” he said. Once finished, the campus will offer emergency care, inpatient care, women's care (including birthing suites), expanded diagnostic services and surgical services (two operating rooms and a dedicated

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools rewarded Superintendent Earnest Winston with a three-year contract Winston extension through 2025 and a 3% base salary increase to $288,400 annually during the Feb. 23 school board meeting. Sean Strain was the lone school board member not to support the extension. Strain said executive incentives should be tied to performance and CMS's performance metrics were not where they should be even before the pandemic. “I cannot support executive reward by way of extension, raise and very significant expansion of benefits given the results and the performance of our district, for which our chief executive should be fully responsible and accountable,” Strain said. Rhonda Cheek said she was proud to have Winston at the helm of the district, crediting his calm demeanor. “It takes a very special person to lead during such a pandemic,” Cheek told Winston. “We have struggled mightily as a board, as a community, as neighbors, as friends, as a staff to try to do what's best for kids and you have helped guide us through that.” Chair Elyse Dashew thanked Winston for his integrity, grace and humble style of leadership. “Particularly in the pandemic, there is no decision that isn't going to make some people very angry and even without a pandemic, that's the job that you've accepted and that takes a lot of courage,” Dashew said. Winston was promoted to superintendent in 2019 following the district's split with Clayton Wilcox. His new contract states that if he is fired from the role, CMS will pay him the amount remaining on his contract or two years of severance pay, whichever is less. His paid time off also increases from 10 days to 20 days. “I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge an incredibly dedicated team that I have working alongside with me in this endeavor,” Winston said. “It is a huge and important endeavor. It's never lost on us each day the role and the impact that we play in the lives of so many.”

Driggs said the city needed to accept the concerns of people who live in single-family neighborhoods as well as those in the development industry. Further complicating the issue is a state law requiring municipalities approve comprehensive plans by mid-2022. Councilman Tariq Bokhari, who represents SouthPark, advised the council to “pump the brakes” on the current proposal, pass a plan that meets minimal legislative requirements and then continue perfecting the plan they've been working on for a few years now. South Charlotte representatives on the city council cautioned colleagues about moving too quickly on approving a comprehensive plan after hearing from constituents and representatives from the development community. One of the fundamental issues with the proposed growth plan is that it would make it easier to build duplexes and triplexes in single-family districts and allow for quadraplexes on arterial streets when affordable housing is provided. Councilman Ed Driggs, who represents Ballantyne, took issue with staff and colleagues treating objections to the proposal as questions rather than discussion points. He said there were people who went to meetings but didn't feel like their views were addressed.

(The Center Square) – Enough COVID-19 vaccine doses will be available by the end of May that every American adult who wants one can receive it, President Joe Biden said March 2, though it might take more time to administer all of the doses. The news came the same day that drugmaker Merck announced it would help Johnson & Johnson produce millions of doses of its recently approved vaccine, Johnson & Johnson received emergency

Report: Nursing homes see sharp drop in COVID cases by Dan McCaleb Contributor

(The Center Square) – Nursing homes in the U.S. are seeing the lowest number of new COVID cases since the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services began tracking the data in May 2020,according to a new report from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living. The health care groups, which represent 14,000 nursing homes and long term care facilities in the U.S. that provide care to about five million people annually, say the study shows that the COVID-19 vaccines are working. Specifically, nursing homes have seen an 82% drop in new cases since the peak during the week of Dec. 20, when there were more than 30,000 new resident cases, the report says. “We still have a long road ahead, but these numbers are incredibly encouraging and a major morale booster for frontline caregivers who have been working tirelessly every day for a year to protect our residents,” Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL, said in a statement. “This new data showcases just how important it is for nursing homes residents and staff, as well as the general public, to get the vaccine

We must continue to encourage folks to get vaccinated, especially caregivers and staff,” Parkinson said. “Public health officials must also continue to ensure that long term care residents and staff remain the highest priority for accessing the vaccine, as the on-site clinics with CVS, Walgreens and other pharmacy partners are coming to a close.”

like to cook, but I’m the kind of person that needs to follow a recipe. I usually turn to Pinterest or the small collection of cookbooks on my kitchen counter for ideas, but lately I’ve been opening TikTok when I don’t know what to make. Here are three popular recipes I’m going to try over the next few days and hopefully they taste as good as everyone says. Bon appétit! 1. Crispy Smashed Roasted Potatoes TikToker @meatlikemike describes this method as “the best way to roast your potatoes,” but it could also be called the most innovative, too. You don’t even need any fancy kitchen gadgets to pull it off — just a cup. Directions: • Boil baby potatoes in salted water until fork tender. • Drain off the water and put the potatoes in a big bowl. • Drizzle potatoes with a generous amount of olive oil and season with salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, fresh rosemary and fresh thyme. Toss to coat. • Dump the potatoes on a lined baking sheet and use the bottom of a glass cup to smash each potato about a half inch thick. • Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through. 2. Crunchwrap Supreme Dupe This is a fusion between the TikTok viral “wrap hack” and one of fast food’s most popular menu items: the Crunchwrap. If you haven’t seen the wrap hack yet, it’s basically the most genius way to make a wrap (see step six). You’re welcome. Directions: • Make a cut from the middle of a large tortilla down to one edge. • In the first quadrant next to the cut, spread sour cream and top with a broken tostada, Nacho Cheese Doritos or any kind of tortilla chip. • In the next quadrant, add shredded lettuce in an even layer and top with diced fresh tomatoes or pico de gallo. • Spread nacho cheese or queso on the next quadrant and top with a layer of seasoned cooked ground beef. • Fill the last quadrant with shredded cheese. • Fold the wrap onto itself, starting with the first quadrant with sour cream and ending with the shredded cheese. • Sear both sides until golden brown over medium low heat in a skillet or sandwich press. 3. Baked Feta Pasta Unless you’ve been living under a rock in 2021, you’ve probably heard at least one person say the words “TikTok pasta.” This is the recipe everyone is talking about and it’s why feta cheese is even sold out in some stores. TikToker @thehungerdiaries said it’s easy and “perfect for a weeknight dinner.” Directions: • Cover the bottom of a baking dish with cherry or grape tomatoes and toss in olive oil, salt, pepper and a couple cloves of garlic.

• Place a block of Greek feta cheese in the center of the dish and top with a little more olive oil, salt and pepper. • Sprinkle red pepper flakes (optional) or any other seasonings you like over the entire dish. • Bake at 400 degrees for about 35 minutes or until the tomatoes have burst their skins. • Meanwhile, boil your pasta of choice until al dente. • Mix the feta and tomatoes until creamy and add the cooked pasta. An Alive Day marks the day a service member nearly died in combat, but through the modernization of battlefield medicine, grit, determination and camaraderie, service members are surviving wounds that could have killed them just a decade earlier. Home to some of the finest military installations in the country, North Carolina breeds our nation’s frontline war heroes. The freedom of many is protected by the bravery of a few. That bravery shines especially brightly in North Carolina. On April 24, 2010, Waxhaw resident Michael Verardo suffered catastrophic and life-changing injuries in Southern Afghanistan. Verardo was awarded his first

Purple Heart just two weeks earlier when he was riding in the turret of a M-ATV as the gunner and the vehicle hit a buried improvised explosive device. He was ejected out 30 feet and medically evacuated. While recovering in Kandahar, Verardo requested to be returned to his unit as their casualty count was high, and he wanted to help continue the mission. On his very first foot patrol, just two weeks later, Verardo was hit again, this time with life-changing consequence. The IED ripped off his left leg, much of his left arm, left him with severe burns, facial damage and in need of a field blood transfusion to be kept alive. Verardo’s military brothers loaded him onto the medical evacua-

tion, believing it was the last time they would see him, as the injuries were not conducive to life. Verardo clung to life aboard the medical flight, flatlining several times and staying in a comatose state through Germany and ultimately reached his final destination of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he remained on status: death imminent. Verardo survived, and April 24, 2021, will mark 11 years of life for him post-Afghanistan. Like many of our nation’s most catastrophically wounded heroes, the fight is lifelong and the family fights right beside them. Verardo has endured 120 surgeries and years of speech, visual, physical and occupational therapies. He lives at home with his wife

and three daughters where he requires full-time care. For heroes like Verardo, the battlefield may be in the past, but the battle rages on at home. Verardo earned two Purple Heart medals on behalf of a grateful nation. What he and others like him continue to give, deserves our endless respect. Under the proposed “North Carolina Wounded Heroes Day,” North Carolinians will join together to honor the sacrifices made by our state’s heroes. N.C. Rep. David Willis and N.C. Sen. Todd Johnson led the charge to introduce the bill in honor of wounded Heroes in North Carolina, identifying Verardo’s Alive Day, April 24, 2010, as the day to recognize all North Carolina wounded Veterans.

In a time where so much divides us, let us remember that it is the most sacred duty of all Americans to support those who allow us the freedom to disagree. We urge all North Carolinians to honor the sacrifices made by our wounded veterans and join together to ensure their heroic stories are never forgotten. Indian Trail adding Fitness Court to Chestnut Square Park Indian Trail Parks & Recreation will soon unveil an outdoor Fitness Court at Chestnut Square Park. The capital project is a featured part of a 2020 initiative launched by National Fitness Campaign, a consulting organization that partners with cities and schools to plan, build and fund healthy infrastructure. Indian Trail was among dozens of recipients to receive $25,000 grant from NFC to support the program. The town is also using bond money for parks to make the project possible. It is also looking for sponsors to help cover the costs. “With the challenges of this past year, including many gyms closing, people have had to get creative with their fitness,” said Hayden Kramer, the town's parks and recreation director. “After learning about the NFC grant, the town felt the Fitness Court would be a great way to offer a free place for our residents to workout, no matter their fitness level. In the parks and recreation department, we’re always trying to

find new opportunities to enhance our offerings and think this will make a great addition to Chestnut Square Park.” The open-air wellness center allows users to leverage their own body weight to get a complete workout. The Fitness Court is adaptable for all fitness levels. New users can download the free Fitness Court App, a coach-in-your-pocket style platform, for iOS and Android. National Fitness Campaign developed the trademarked seven-station system in 2012 hoping to inspire municipalities to transform public spaces into community fitness hubs. There are 100 locations across the country. Mayor Michael Alvarez thanked the town's parks and recreation department for bringing the amenity to town as well as the public works department for constructing it. “Within our parks, we want there to be something for everyone to enjoy,” Alvarez said. “The Fitness Court will be an asset for those looking for a unique way to work out. Study demonstrates minimal COVID-19 infections among day campers DURHAM – A Duke Health analysis of COVID-19 cases among youngsters attending YMCA camps in six central North Carolina counties shows minimal spread of symptomatic infections among the children and the camp counselors. The study, appearing online Feb. 3 in the journal “Pediatrics,” adds to a growing body of literature documenting nominal spread of the pandemic virus among children in group settings when known mitigation measures are strictly followed, including masking, social distancing and hand washing. “Our study suggests that appropriate measures to reduce the spread of disease can create an envi-

ronment where normal childhood activities such as day camp, school and after-school recreation can be provided with minimal risk,” said lead author Emily D’Agostino, an assistant professor in Duke’s Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. “The study also highlights the critical importance of academic partnerships with community organizations for promoting pediatric health.” D’Agostino and colleagues, including co-senior author Ibukun Akinboyo, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Duke, analyzed data collected from 54 YMCA camps in the greater Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. The study period

spanned from March through August, when community cases of COVID-19 were escalating. Of the camps, 39% primarily offered indoor activities, 38% were outdoors and 23% offered activities in both settings. All of the camps required staff to receive training in COVID-19 mitigation strategies, and camps adhered to symptom screenings for children and staff, masking, hand washing/sanitizing, daily cleaning/disinfecting and minimizing group sizes to no more than 10 children. With those measures strictly enforced, the researchers found only 19 cases of symptomatic disease among 6,830 children and staff members. The limited number

of confirmed infections among the 10 children and nine staff members occurred despite rising incidences of COVID-19 in the community. Only two cases were possibly traced to campers passing infections to others at camp; the majority were infected outside of camp. The researchers noted the study used data gathered before the larger, second wave of infections arose after the holidays. Additionally, testing for COVID-19 in the first months of the pandemic was limited to people with symptoms, so potential cases of asymptomatic infection were not identified. The study adds to research published in January in “Pediatrics” by

another group of researchers from Duke who reported that transmissions of COVID-19 within schools was rare. The research team – representing Duke Clinical Research Institute and other universities as part of the ABC Science Collaborative -- studied 11 school districts in North Carolina over a nine-week period of in-person instruction. That study reported there were 773 community-acquired COVID-19 infections among school children and staff, but only 32 infections acquired within schools. No instances of child-toadult transmission of COVID-19 were reported within the schools. “These data should be helpful to school systems and childcare providers as they navigate this exceedingly difficult time, yet work to promote the wellbeing of children and primary caregivers,” Akinboyo said.
