Caroline Marta. Bachelors of Design (Major in Branded Environment Design)

As an environmental graphic designer in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, I ha ve taken Branded Environment Design as my major for the Bachelor Degree Program at Swinbur ne University of Technology in Melbour ne. In addition to three-years studying in Australia, and I also got a once-in-a life time study exchange experience for six-months at Drexel University in Philadelphia. All those years was beyond imagination and has given me the opportunity to explore my ideas and aspirations in the design field in which my creative knowledge and skills have directed my career interest in areas such as environmental graphic design, exhibition and retail design, photography, and art management. My chosen major enables me to engage with people’s emotions and can connect them to a space on physical and emotional levels. I conceptually explore a strong personal ethos to guide me through designing spaces and experiences that are honest and human-focused. Now I am all set to break into the industy full of challenges.

Typography for Design Assignment

10

I chose to produce an editorial small booklet design about Futura and Paul Renner as the historical typographic topic. The final design outcome of my design has applied contemporary design for the layout of the booklet with the combination of 1920’s elements through the styles, design inspirations, and design techniques. The chosen layout had a great arrangement with the positive and negative space in the spread and looked pretty well with the black-and-white images and geometric shapes. The main design style of the booklet is the collage technique which well known in the 1920’s. Also, I want the booklet to appear neutral and minimalist so I simplified the color palette and make it cleaner aesthetically. This overall booklet simply gave a modernity look on it, and it could be easy for the reader to read this editorial publishing clearly.

museum of art. Tour ist y P lace Booklet Desig n

During my exchange semester at Drexel University, I took typography for design as my elective. For the final publication design project, I was assigned to produce an A4 booklet of a touristic place in Philadelphia, immediately after which I chose Philadelphia Museum of Art as my topic. It contains the museum’s history, their architecture building, and also the iconic rocky steps and statues. I developed all the contents using my original photographs that I took by myself and authentic design and gridding style for this booklet.

Brand & Ident ity Design Assignment

14

For this brand & identity design final project during my exchange semester, I produced this branding series of a chosen local good market. I decided to go with the Indonesian theme, as I wanted to bring and celebrate my culture internationally. I created brand & identity for “Warjo” (Waroeng Jadoel”, an Indonesian local goods market located in Philadelphia. I used the actual painted real batik fabric for the identity, scanned it, then put it together with the typographic logo that I made. For the final outcome, I managed to produce their stationery design, menu, paper shopping bag, and also the packaging for the “sambal terasi”. It was a really fun assignment to explore my skills in visual communication design, and learn how to make a series of the actual prototype.

For this project, I designed and produced an interactive ePUB using the Adobe InDesign and Flash and I chose “We-The-Fest festival as my local hometown-event topic. The focus here was to explore the visual and narrative flow over multiple pages, resolving sophisticated typography yet considering the readability of the article. This first ePUB project also taught me how to ensure that all the design elements go along well in eReading environment. To make it more interactive and engaging, I also included simple animations, bitmaps, videos, and sounds to integrate the ePUB to its readers.

Experimental Image Making Assignment

18

This “LANY” vinyl album cover was produced for my experimental image-making assignment in the senior year. I redesigned LANY’s album, which incorporated their music genre, style, vibes, and also the philosophy of this album. I played around with my 35mm pictures I’d taken before for the front cover images, and mixmatched it with LANY’ colour palette and new typographic logo that I designed for it. There was also a small zine as the additional insert (based on track 10 “Pancake”) to provide some pancakes recipe of what they should have while listening to each track of LANY album. This was the best outcome that I could give and was well-liked.

Swin 2018. Br and & Ident it y Desi g n

I joined the committee of GradX Design Graduate Show as the Exhibition Design Team, which held in November 2018, when my team and I were assigned to create this exhibition’s identity, starting from designing few “X logos with different typefaces that differentiate each design faculty at Swinburne. We, then, applied all of the final identities to their website interface, graduation booklet, invitation card, and also signage and way finding. It was really a great experience for me to join this committee team since I was the only branded environment design and international student here, learning lots of new things from my teammates and also got to know how to create a design exhibition based on the art & project management on a larger scale.

shibori. Exhibit ion Design

For my branded environment design studio final assignment, I was required to design one of the brands that were going to be exhibited at DENFAIR 2018 in which I came up with Shibori as my local brand, it was a boutique textile agency renowned for pushing the boundaries of this ancient Japanese craft with modern applications and a relaxed Australia feel. The concept here was to show that an exhibition stand could be more than just displaying the products, yet visitors went home with an unforgettable amazing experience. A dip-dyed full scale of fabric hot air balloon and the Shibori’s bean bag space fully engaged with visitor’s emotions and connected them to a space on physical.

Branded Environment Design Stud io 2 Assignment

28

Australian Open is one of the biggest sport events in Australia. In BE design studio 2 class, I finished this final project for the entire semester, starting from demonstrating the research, iteration, presentation, drawing thumbnails, design refinement, until making the final drawings and models. I focused on developing their brand and wayfinding strategy and environmental design of Australian Open X Tesla festival structures. Creating a memorable experience and celebrating the new brand partnership as well as increasing the commercial revenue of the Australian Open event was the main goal of this project brief. As the outcome, I succeeded in delivering new concepts of the AO entrance signage structure, AO merchandise and retail stall, ticketing and information booth, AO festival entertainment pavilion, and Tesla demonstration space. It was quite challenging for me since I have to deliver the whole idea of this event through space designs.

(Final Thesis)

32

In the course of my final thesis, I was challenged by this capstone unit; therefore, I decided to go with designing an educative and memorable experience through a themed restaurant before I started to look up on the existing restaurant. Since I wanted to do the authentic restaurant theme by showing its culture in different emotional experience, I chose “NUSA” the Indonesian gastronomic restaurant based in Jakarta. The idea was aiming at educating the visitors not only through their food for sure, but also thorough the edible story behind its food - Indonesian culture and history, and about how we improvise Indonesian traditional cuisine with the modern technique like “gastronomy” and bring it internationally. At the end of the day, I can see that I tried and succeeded in resolving and communicating my final designs through developed drawings, diagrams, and other visualization methods. Overall, it was a great project to find my true color in design style.
