SPRING PROGRAMME

JANUARY - APRIL 2014

WELCOME... ... to our jam-packed Spring season. We are thrilled to announce that we have recently received the Mayor’s Award for Access, which is in recognition of our positive contribution to improving access and opportunities for the people and Borough of Guildford. We also had our very first Family Festival during the October half term, which was part of a nationwide initiative. It was lovely to see so many familiar and new faces. If it was your first visit to the Theatre then we hope that you had fun. We have another festival coming up in February. Have a look at page 8 to find out more. Highlights this Dpring include our Indie Film Festival in January (p4), comedian Lee Hurst with his new stand up show (rescheduled from November last year, p5), Guildford Spring Music Festival (p12, 13), The Jungle Book, performed by our resident youth theatre The Man In The Moon (p14), and a special family Easter treat - Jack and the Beanstalk performed by the acclaimed Lyngo Theatre (p15). Our season is also packed full of musicals and plays performed by fantastic local performance groups which include The Music Works, Godalming College, Surrey Mozart Players, Guildford School of Acting, the Performance Preparation Academy, The Pranksters Theatre Company, George Abbot School, Guildford Opera, Lost for Words and Guildburys Theatre Company. We hope to see you at the Theatre soon!

The Electric Theatre Team

GATA is an umbrella organisation of about 20 societies and groups including theatre and opera companies, singing and youth groups, as well as dancers and film makers. The Association works towards advancing public education in the dramatic arts in and around Guildford. It has been a major ally of The Electric Theatre, having been instrumental in its founding. Many of the groups perform at The Electric Theatre year in, year out – why not drop in and see what they’re up to, and maybe join in too? THE FRIENDS’ QUIZ NIGHT Following a full house last year, The Friends of The Electric Theatre are hosting another Quiz Evening with Paul Kassell as their new Quiz Master. Bring along your friends and enjoy your own picnic in the break (all drinks must be purchased at the Café Bar) during this fun filled, ‘puzzling’ evening. Proceeds go towards purchasing amenities for the Theatre. FRI 24 JANUARY LIVE NATION

LEE HURST “THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO AAARGGH!!!” In his new tour, stand up comic Lee Hurst is travelling throughout Britain to find out what really winds you up. Mostly people get on with living their lives, but everyone has at least one thing that pushes their button and sends them over the edge. What's yours? Come along for a night of laughter and letting off some steam. Lee is known throughout the comedy business as someone who can pull laughs out of thin air with his razor sharp ability to improvise and ad lib comedy on the spot. Everyone witnessed this when he first hit our TV screens on Have I Got News For You and They Think It's All Over. He is also a regular guest on Channel 5's The Wright Stuff.

SAT 25 JANUARY THE MUSIC WORKS

LET’S MAKE MUSIC! The Music Works presents "Let's Make Music!". As a local music school based in Milford Surrey, they are excited to be staging their latest concert. All their students aged from four to 80 are performing, showing off their skills in singing, keyboards, guitar, drums and classical instruments. There will also be some special guest performers. Friends and family will join them for three fun performances with the audience making music too.

MON 27 JANUARY GODALMING COLLEGE CONTEMPORARY MUSIC SHOWCASE 2014 Performed by members of the contemporary music additional studies course at Godalming College. This showcase gives many keen musicians the opportunity to get involved with popular music performance. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for the BTEC Music Technology students to provide all of the live sound for the evening, giving them invaluable work experience. There will be six College bands delivering a wide range of styles, and a couple of special guests who are well known in the local area.

JAZZ CAFÉ Laura Jurd is a London based trumpet player, composer and improviser who is making enormous waves on the British jazz scene. She won the prestigious Dankworth prize for composition at just 19, and at the age of 21 was the first woman in nearly 20 years to take the Worshipful Company of Musicians' Jazz Award. “sophisticated and technically awesome...delivered with the assurance of a budding trumpet-improv original.” John Fordham, The Guardian

Neither musical, play nor revue, Songs for a New World is closer to a theatrical song cycle. It is the first show written by Jason Robert Brown where he combines songs written for other venues and events. Featuring a vocally demanding score, the music is heavily influenced by a broad range of musical genres including pop, gospel and jazz. Many of the songs combine elements of two or more of these genres.

WED 19 FEBRUARY GUILDFORD JAZZ

JAZZ CAFÉ A consummate performer, and one of Britain’s top jazz saxophonists, Art Themen is a busy and sought after musician who is known for his originality and individual style. He regularly plays in large and small venues throughout the UK and worldwide, and is a regular feature at many jazz festivals. A winner of the 2008 British Jazz Awards, Art first appeared on the jazz scene in the late 1950s. A member of the award winning Cambridge University Jazz Band from 1958 to 1961, he became involved in the early London blues scene, playing alongside Alexis Korner, Jack Bruce, Mick Jagger and Chuck Berry. He also fronted the Stan Tracey Quartet for 20 years from 1976. He has played and recorded with many US and British luminaries including Alan Barnes, John Donaldson, John Critchinson, Dave Newton, Georgie Fame, Don Weller and Mornington Lockett, as well as international musicians such as Nat Adderley and George Coleman.

Frustrated and bored by their mundane lives in the town of Eastwick, three women have a shared longing and desire for “all manner of man in one man”. This devil like character then comes to life in the form of a charismatic stranger, Darryl van Horne. Seducing each of the women in turn, Darryl teaches them how to further expand the power locked within, though their new unorthodox lifestyle scandalizes the town.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL Adapted by Simon Reade from the novel by Michael Morpurgo Private Peaceful is, after War Horse, the best known work of former children’s laureate Michael Morpurgo. This adaptation by Simon Reade follows brothers Tommo and Charlie Peaceful from a sunny childhood in Devon to the horrors of the trenches and the awful realisation that the enemy is not always on the other side of the wire. SPRING SING! Community Vox presents a day of singing workshops for everyone who enjoys a good sing. The day will comprise of three singing workshops each led by accomplished and diverse singing workshop leaders, including English folk singer Anna Tabbush (director of Guildford Vox Community Choir) and Member of Spookey Men’s Chorale Philip Read. To round off this uplifting day of song we will have an evening’s participatory performance by virtuoso Roma band the Gypsy Diamonds.

There is no age limit and no previous experience of singing is necessary. All music will be taught by ear so you don’t need to know how to sight read to participate.

JAZZ CAFÉ Jacqui Hicks is one of those rarities, a great singer, gifted saxophonist and a consummate musician. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama she toured and recorded with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before joining the jazz/funk band Shakatak, with whom she has toured extensively. Jacqui has also worked with the Latin/Pop band Matt Bianco and has released a number of acclaimed jazz CDs under her own name. She is currently appearing up and down the country with Paul Lacey's Back To Basie Orchestra. Jacqui will be joined for this rare performance in Guildford by trumpeter Martin Shaw, one of the UK’s leading jazz musicians and is much in demand for both live performance and studio dates. WEEKLY DRAMA WORKSHOPS With the emphasis on fun and performance, our after school drama workshops are designed specifically to develop skills that will benefit children for life. Activities include an exciting mix of; improvisation, role play, drama games, movement and teamwork, fuelling the imagination whilst working towards performance opportunities with new friends. Above all, they're great fun. All children need to bring with them is enthusiasm. It doesn't matter if they’ve never done any drama before; we all have to start somewhere. We're so confident that you'll love how dramatically different our workshops are that you can even try one out for free! Just let us know when you'd like to come.

PARKING Parking at The Electric Theatre is strictly for disabled patrons. Bedford Road Car Park is just a few minutes walk from the Theatre on Onslow Street. Parking is £1.20 an hour during the day and £1 per evening visit after 6pm. On Sundays parking is £1.50 per visit. For further information and up to date charges visit Guildford Borough Council’s website at www.guildford.gov.uk TRAIN Guildford mainline Station is only a short walk from the Theatre. BUS An extensive local bus service (including Park and Ride) is available from the Friary Bus Station, again a short distance from the Theatre. ON FOOT From the town centre, there is an underpass between New Look and TK Maxx in Friary Street. Alternatively, if you are coming from the Friary Shopping Centre, Bus Station or Train Station, there are pedestrian crossings. CYCLISTS Bike racks are located alongside the Theatre, just by the main entrance.
