PIAZZA GARIBALDI

Piazza Garibaldi

Cortona, Italy

6

I completed this project while studying abroad in the Tuscan town of Cortona, Italy. This design seeks to bring new life and purpose to a space that is essentially the starting point of the hilltop town of Cortona. Currently serving as a bus stop and main entrance to the town, this piazza has potential to serve as an informative and multi-functional community center. At the entry to the piazza is a vehicular pull in, to continue to serve as a drop off point. The entry arch serves as a waiting area, community news board, and threshold to the space. Through the arch, visitors will see the existing monument to Garibaldi centered among raised perennial planters. The main plaza space is open and surrounds a sunken fountain which invites interaction and play in warmer months and can be turned off in the cold ones. More private than the main plaza, step up into the overlook platform for open views of the valley below and Lake Trasimeno beyond.

CAMUCIA TRAIN STATION

Camucia Train Station

Camucia, Italy

8

Another design challenge I faced while studying abroad in Italy, this project focused on transforming an outdoor space beside a train station in the small town of Camucia. The existing site is an empty paved area. Train stations act as important community hubs in these rural Italian towns, and should be designed as such. The purpose of this design is to provide varied opportunities for social interactions to enhance the experience of waiting for all. This plan takes a very linear design form, intended to create a calm, ordered space for visitors. The strongest lines run parallel to the train tracks, mimicking the linear movement. The lone diagonal path runs directly north and south, dividing the space and enforcing the view from the entrance to the tracks. The “rooms within the space are ordered from more open and public on the eastern side for easy movement and large groups, to more enclosed and private on the western side.

WASHINGTON STREET PLAZA

Washington Street Plaza

Athens, Georgia

10

Located in Downtown Athens, this site currently serves as a parking lot and has the potential to be a beautiful civic space that invites play, rest, and gathering. The intent of this design is to create a public plaza with various uses and degrees of privacy. Multiple unique spaces are defined by pavement material and level change. The main area is level with adjacent sidewalks, making it easily accessible to visitors. The tree shaded seating area hosts wide concrete forms that allow users to face friends, sit alone, recline, or spread out. Sunken two feet below the main level, a splashpad is set within wide steps that serve as a gathering and lounging space. Two feet above the main level and accessible by ramp is a shaded seating area, providing more privacy and an outward view of the plaza. The highest level is the smallest and most secluded “room in the space. It is made into a more serene destination by the high walls, elevation, and white noise of the water feature.

EPPS FLIGHT PARK

Epps Flight Park

Athens, Georgia

14

Focused on bringing new vitality to the Oconee River waterfront and downtown Athens, this design seeks to recognize the legacy of Ben Epps, Athens native and original southern aviator. In 1907, Epps built and flew the first plane in Georgia, and has served as an inspiration for others in his time and since. Through thoughtful planning, this park could inspire generations to connect with nature, engage with their community, and reach greater heights. By implementing a number of public amenities such as social event spaces, sports fields, multi-use lawn areas, a water access ramp, and a performance space, this park design will connect downtown Athens to its often under-appreciated natural treasure, the Oconee River. A strong main spine connects the north end on busy Broad Street to the south end on hectic Oconee street, drawing attention inward. Smaller paths branch off, providing access to other active and passive spaces.

IMPLEMENTATION DOCUMENTS The following document set was created for a class focused on understanding construction details and plans and learning to create them. Over the course of the semester, we learned to create the content of these documents and apply them to a project at the University of Georgia Griffin Campus. The purpose was to detail a proposed courtyard area, including patio space with multiple materials and finishes, a fountain, and a brick wall.

Harrietts Bluff, Georgia

20

My childhood memories are dominated by times spent on my family’s property on the Crooked River in Harrietts Bluff, Georgia. “The Bluff,” as we’ve always called it, was purchased by my great grandfather in 1943, and has for generations since been a place spoken of with love, reverence, and deep connectedness to nature. It is here that my siblings, cousins, and I spent countless days running barefoot through palmetto stands and mud banks, feeling completely safe in the exploration of our outdoor kingdom. I wanted to be able to express my feelings of play, wistfulness, wonder, peace, and sadness for this special place through photography. I drew inspiration from Sally Mann’s black and white photographs of southern landscapes and her family. I manipulated the camera and post-process to create a sense of etherealness reminiscent of childhood memories. In terms of photographic elements, I was drawn to images with symmetry and balance, high contrast, intentional movement and stillness, and interesting sight lines.

SKETCHES & WATERCOLORS

From a young age I found great joy and peace in drawing and painting. Through my pursuit of a degree in landscape architecture, the importance of practicing these skills on a daily basis became apparent. While studying abroad in Italy, I kept multiple sketch journals. The easy pace of life that we slipped into there was conducive to truly observing our surroundings and taking the time to study them through sketch. My time there helped me to form the habit of sketching every single day.
