PROPOSED REDESIGN OF THE

JOHN D. KEHOE DORMITORY COURTYARD UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA CORTONA CAMPUS CORTONA, ITALY CAROLINE COWAN LAND 4900 SENIOR CAPSTONE

Mission: To create a multipurpose space that echoes both the natural Tuscan landscape in aesthetic and the Tuscan culture in function. The Kehoe Courtyard is the epicenter of the John D. Kehoe Dormitory and the UGA Cortona program. Most rooms overlook the courtyard, and it is accessible from almost all sides, but it currently lacks visual appeal and functionality. The hope for the new design of the Courtyard is that it will draw residents outside and be a multipurpose space that echoes both the natural Tuscan landscape in aesthetic and the Tuscan culture in function. In order to best design the courtyard, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints of the existing site were assessed. The findings were as follows: Strengths • Good balance of sun and shade throughout the day. Certain areas get all-day sun while others get all day-shade, and the sun moves well through the space. • Five existing large shade trees also contribute to well-shaded areas. All five trees will remain in the proposed plan. • Existing perennial beds that are in good shape but can be enhanced. • Ample entrance and egress into the courtyard from all directions. Weaknesses • Poor soils: some hints of turf grass but mostly gravel. • The courtyard is flanked by the Kehoe Building and the adjacent terraces, creating an unpleasant wind tunnel due to the Venturi Effect. • Outdated chain-link gate is unsightly and locked except for emergency access. • The site is relatively flat so it lacks visual interest. Opportunities • Remove the underutilized Bocce Ball court. • Allow the students to redesign an iron gate. This could be a semester-long educational/art opportunity. • Existing large ceramic planters can be relocated and better utilized. Constraints • Site boundary is firm and cannot be changed. • Access from the main road during construction is limited. The broad concept for the new Kehoe Courtyard is to create rooms that mirror the varying elements of Tuscan culture. Each part of the day has a distinct behavior and feel, and each of the “rooms” in the courtyard will represent that. Traveling through the space from East to West, the rooms are as follows: “Riposo,” “Passeggiata,” and “Fare Amicizia.” The goals for the Kehoe Courtyard are that it will accommodate all types of users, making the space both functional and beautiful. All the while, it will echo the Tuscan landscape and culture, and be designed to be enjoyed at all times of the day. These goals can be accomplished in three major ways: better organize the space into “rooms” by program, implement a distinct plant palette that is native to Cortona, and design with close attention to sun and wind patterns to make the space suitable for the elements. Additional considerations were given to noise level at various points in the courtyard, the poor condition of the current soils and access to the space from each side.
