HISTORY Main Street, Mornington

Mornington Railway Station

Originally the area known as Schnapper/ Snapper Point named after a local headland, was visited by Matthew Flinders on 26 April 1802. Within the 1840s the first European settlers entered the area seeking timber, fish and taking up pastoral leases. A Government survey by Permein in 1854 was conducted to allow for land sales. A petition was also signed by 70 entrepreneurial townsfolk from the Mornington Peninsula, to request a 46m long pier be built in 1857, giving a vital link to Melbourne and a good deep water port. This was followed by the Courthouse in 1871 now Mornington Peninsula Language and Culture Studies and the Post Office in 1863, currently a Mornington Museum.

The rapid growth of Snapper Point, the township renamed it to Mornington in 186, after 2nd Earl of Mornington who had been British Foreign Secretary. Mornington quickly became a major commercial and legal centre for townships and rural communities across the Peninsula with a population of around 25,000, it remains the largest along the coasts. It became a popular bayside destination for holiday makers and day trippers. Steamers called at the jetty and the train had been running daily since 1889. Today’s Main Street has become vibrant and cosmopolitan seaside town that reflects the changing times over its history.
