Four Tips for Decluttering 1.
Be in the right mood If you are not in a mood to clean and declutter then don’t! My experience has taught me if I want to declutter and reorganize I am much more productive. If however I don't “feel it” then I am wasting my time. If I push on and try to declutter an area and I am not in the mind set to clean then more often than not I only do it half way. So wait to declutter a space when the mood strikes. 2. Choose one area If you need to clean out a kitchen drawer or a clothes closet choose one area and stick with it. Once you have finished one decluttering task make sure you have enough time to complete another task. Frustration will discourage you from clearing and decluttering if you run out of time and do not finish the task. Nothing is worse than looking at a bigger mess than the one you started out with originally. 3.
Be generous Once you have start to declutter establish three piles: trash, keep and give away. If an item needs to be repaired decide if you can fix it yourself or if the expense to repair is worth it to you. If it is worth repairing keep it. If you have no intention of repairing the item then either trash it or give it away. This especially applies to clothing and shoes. Be as generous as you can and help others. After I cleaned out my closet I decided that every time I bought new shoes then an old pair had to leave. I have started practicing that with my clothes as well. There are have two benefits to this practice. #1. I do not have to clean out my closet as often and #2 I have cut down on my spending for shoes and clothes. I have to consider what I am going to get rid of in my closet in order to have something new. Once you decide what you are giving away, pick a charitable organization to give it too or if the items can be resold find a consignment shop or use a reliable online service. 4.
Finish what you start Once you have completed a decluttering task remind yourself how much time it took to finish the job. With that in mind try to keep any area prone to clutter cleaned out and stay ahead of any future decluttering jobs!
