Dear (name of hiring editor as per mediabistro.com), You are looking for a personable writer with excellent communication and interviewing skills, as well as a writer who has experience with transcription, writing magazine articles, and editing books. I have all the necessary skills you are seeking and I am eager to write for Book In a Box. While I have not published any articles, I do have clips written for college assignments available for you to view at issu.com. I am currently finishing my B.A. in Public Relations via distance learning through California Baptist University. I have also written several press releases for The Evening Telegram and The Observer Dispatch newspapers, as well as an online blog journaling my father’s newspaper articles that appeared in The Evening Telegram during the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Additionally, I have transcription skills in my work history and have helped edited several books by authors who reside in my Upstate New York area. I have also written a blog for our local public library while I served as a member of the board, in which I interviewed local authors and wrote about their books. I have attached a copy of my résumé and a list of authors whom I have interviewed and/or edited for. Thank you very much for your consideration. Sincerely, Carol Kinney

For this week’s freelance assignment, I watched the suggested video and decided that I would search for a writing job through freelancewriting.com. As I scrolled through the job postings, one stood out to me as something that I was qualified for. The above pitch letter is for the job posting titled “Book in a Box is Hiring Freelance Writers. After reading the description on the freelancewriting.com site, I clicked on the link which then directed me to mediabistro.com. At Media Bistro, the comprehensive job posting was listed. While I did not click on the apply now tab to find out pertinent information as to who to address the letter to, I was able to do a Google search for the company to find that Book In A Box is a subsidiary of Lioncrest publishing which helps unknown authors self-publish their books. I liked the steps in the process that I took this week. I thought that the freelancewriting.com site was very easy to navigate. I also liked that not only did the site list jobs only available on that particular site, but also instantly redirected my path to other sites with little effort on my part. So far, this site has to be one of my favorites in finding freelance work. I found that as I practice, the process becomes easier and is less painful than that which I felt in week two of this class. As I progress through this class, freelancing is becoming less and less frightening and something that I am considering more and more. I still believe that God is directing me in a different path, but I am also seeing how I might be able to actually use the experience to help me get to my dream job. I am also learning that there are more jobs than I thought that are willing to give inexperienced writers a chance.
