Venice, but not as you know it. The site for the design project is the Marittima-Tronchetto area. The islands were used as the centro storico’s commercial port until 1917, when large-scale shipping began its gradual transition to Marghera, on the terraferma. Today, the site houses the centro storico’s cruise ship terminals and is largely used for car parking: two activities which are contentious in the pedestrian, historic city. In contrast to the human scale of Venice’s historic fabric, this area is built to the scale of the grandi navi; offering a sense of space unavailable anywhere else, except maybe on the water of the lagoon.

Marittima is Venice’s cruise ship port and can house up to six grandi navi at a time. The port is downscaling its activities at present and aims to relocate the cruise ships to mainland terminals by 2022. Without this primary use, the future of the site remains unclear.

The Marittima was reconfigured when commercial shipping activities were relocated to Marghera, the site then became solely used as a cruise terminal.

The Tronchetto has been seen as something of a failure since its construction in the 1960s and development has only ever been partially realised. A hotbed of organised crime, the isolated, peripheral island has been the subject of a myriad of development plans and much speculation. The development illustrated was only partially completed; the majority of the island remains an open car park and informal tourist bus terminal.
