PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Share Your Passion ... A Wonderful Gift It is hard to believe that my year as President of AIA Las Vegas has come to an end so quickly. It has been my privilege to serve you and

the chapter these last 12 months and I look forward to continue working on your behalf as President of AIA Nevada in 2018 as well as the Co-Chair of A’19, the 2019 Conference on Architecture, formerly known as the AIA National Convention. A’19 will be in Las Vegas, June 5-8, 2019, so mark your calendars now. I am pleased, honored and thankful that Eric Roberts, AIA is a Co-Chair for this exciting annual showcase of all things architecture. As you all are aware, the focus this year was “Igniting Interest, Education & Passion for Architecture in The Next Generation of Architects”. The programs included the entire spectrum of education; elementary schools, middle schools, high schools and the UNLV School of Architecture. This was accomplished by working with existing programs, creating new programs as well as connecting and strengthening ties to existing scholastic programs. Elementary School Outreach: The Garden Classroom Partnership, created in 2016 when the Committee on the Environment (COTE) joined with Green our Planet has been helping Clark County Schools find funding and resources to build vegetable gardens at existing elementary schools. AIA COTE joined the effort by providing two additional benefits to the process. Anna Peltier, RLA, an Allied Member is not only a leader of the Garden Classroom Partnership, her company, Aria Landscape Architecture has made it their mission to support this program with passion, manpower, drawings and even funds when necessary……superstars in our community. For more information about the Garden Classroom Partnership, please see the President’s Message in the May Issue of FORUM. Anna could use your help, and trust me, spending a couple of hours with these youngsters is extremely fun and rewarding. I know you will get as much out of spending time with them as they do from you.

Middle & High Schools Outreach: Kyle Fischer, Assoc. AIA, Joe Miller, Glenn Nowak, AIA, Harry Ray, AIA, Robert Holtfreter, AIA, Dominic Armendariz, Assoc. AIA, Stephen Ranck, AIA, Michelle Brigida, AIA, Ibrahim Kako, AIA, Brett Robillard, AIA and of course, Randy Lavigne, Hon. AIA met regularly this year. The committee uses a consistent messaging in a power point presentation when speaking to students. The four-part presentation highlights “What do Architects Do?”, “What does Architecture do?”, “How to become an Architect?” and “What is AIA?” The Student Chapter of the AIA (AIAS) at UNLV School of Architecture took a lead role with Clark County Students on a separate, but parallel path under the leadership of Dominic Armendariz, Assoc. AIA. His leadership resulted in the creation of an AIA Student chapter at the East Career & Technical Academy, joining Advanced Technologies Academy as the 2nd AIAS High School chapter in Las Vegas.

High School Design Competition: Ryan Sisti, Assoc. AIA once again led the 45th annual high school design competition. Glenn Nowak, AIA reached out to Skills-USA to garner interest and participation throughout the state. We broadened the number of schools that are now aware of this competition and are planning on participating. We’ve had as many as ten schools participate but with the loss of drafting education throughout the district over the years, the number of participating schools plummeted to a low of three in 2013. In 2018 we will have six participating schools. We look forward to a wide array of creative design solutions to the challenge at our April 2018 meeting where we will announce the winners during our Art, Architecture & Design month celebration.

Principal Shadow Program: The program, administered through AIA Las Vegas and UNLV SOA pairs 6th year graduate students and a participating architectural office. The intent is that students spend time during a normal business day with a principal or other key individuals, in the real world setting of architectural offices, meetings and conferences. The program allows maximum flexibility for both students and professional offices to coordinate hours spent in an office. I am pleased to announce that Atlas Architecture, BWA, Zimmerray Studios, SH Architecture and Gensler & Associates volunteered in 2017. Thank you Brett Robillard, AIA, Leonard Bergman, AIA, Harry Ray, AIA, Eric Roberts, AIA, and Stephen Ranck, AIA.

The most consistently repeated comment from students in our K-12 outreach programs is that architecture was never considered a career path…….but now they want to be architects.

ADVOCACY

2017 Advocacy Highlights Having succeeded in the 2015 Legislative Session to eliminate the “duty to defend clause from public works contracts, AIA Nevada went to work in 2017 to change the language used in NRS 108 that prohibits architects from filing a lien to receive payment for services they have provided prior to the beginning of construction. Many small firms are caught unaware when payment for their services are held until after construction has begun, when in some cases funding fails or the project is canceled and they have no recourse for receiving payment for services provided. Throughout 2018 and in the 2019 Legislative Session, AIA Nevada will continue to work to change this language so that architects, engineers and other design professionals are protected.

WAYS TO ENGAGE IN ADVOCACY DONATE to the AIA NV PAC, our non-partisan, legal vehicle for individuals to pool resources and make financial contributions in support of issues affecting architects and architecture. AIA Nevada The mission of the Nevada Chapter of the American Institute of Architects is to advocate on behalf of architects in the state of Nevada and to promote design excellence and service to the profession and the community.
