HTC ONE M9 • APRIL PRICE GUIDE 2015

The One you’ve been waiting for. One of the reveals at Mobile World Congress we were looking forward to most at Carphone Warehouse was the HTC One M9. Last year’s HTC One (M8), in our opinion was quite simply one of the best phones we have ever used: beautifully designed crystal clear screen and impeccable build quality. So, needless to say the HTC One M9 has some pretty big boots to fill. For starters, the HTC One M9 is slightly shorter, and a fraction narrower. The most notable change is the finish. HTC uses a dual anodising process which, without getting too technical,

allows for different finishes and colours. One of the handsets on show at Mobile World Congress, for example, was silver with gold edge, while another was more traditional gunmetal grey. Flipping the device over to

admire the colour scheme reveals another significant change, but we’ll get to the camera in a moment. The power button is now on the right-hand side, below the volume controls, which are now two distinct buttons. But otherwise, the HTC One M9 features the design characteristics we know and love from recent HTC offerings. The HTC One M9 still features a 5-inch display, despite being slightly smaller in stature. The display looks bright and colourful, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels to boot. It’s similar to last year’s HTC One (M8) in this regard, but we didn’t have many complaints then either. The HTC One M9 comes with 32GB of internal storage, but you can expand this further thanks to microSD support. And the 2,800mAh battery is a pretty big deal considering HTC sometimes lags behind other smartphone manufacturers when it comes to beefing up its devices’ batteries. No doubt the subject of many debates around the M8 was its Ultrapixel sensor.

The Ultrapixel technology found in last year’s M8 hasn’t been junked though. HTC have relocated this camera to the front facing position instead. Remember the bit about it shooting great in low light conditions? Well, it turns out that this works rather well for selfies and not just because most selfies are taken in dark nightclubs or at 4am when you’ve exited the Nightlink. Taking a selfie with a flash means you get big white shot of your face and not much else.

It’s something that allows you to use your phone like an entertainment centre that doesn’t have to be personal. Pull out the headphones, crank it up to 11 and let everyone else hear. The HTC One M9 now comes with Dolby virtual surround sound to enhance the already great sound quality we’ve come to expect from HTC.

There are some pretty nifty software features to be found here. One in particular that we like is the customisation. You can take a picture, press “theme” when viewing it in the gallery, and the HTC One M9 will present you with a cropped section. It then analyses this and creates a theme based on the colours and style in it. It’s a very clever and personalised touch that many will appreciate. It allows you to say, “This One M9

The HTC One (M8) was one of last year’s best devices. While the HTC One M9 isn’t a huge departure from its predecessor, you get the feeling that it doesn’t have to be. The camera may divide users; on the one hand, it could be an acknowledgement that UltraPixels weren’t the way to go, but on the other hand, HTC is giving users what they want. But overall, the HTC One M9 is well designed, it is immensely powerful, and it comes with some novel software features.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

The newly designed HTC One M9 is revamped with some quality improvements while its internal specs have been given a minor lift. The HTC One M9 features an excellent 5” display, which is bright and colourful. It’s powered by an octa-core Qualcomm processor and 3GB RAM, making it capable of handling everything you could throw at it. The biggest change is the camera, which is now a 20 megapixel sensor rather than an UltraPixel sensor. Overall, the HTC One M9 is a great handset with gorgeous design, excellent build quality, and topnotch specs.

Samsung has made some big changes for its new S range, including a glass and aluminium build for the first time. The S6 features a large 5.1” screen without feeling too big in the hand and a Super AMOLED display at a massive resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. There’s a 16 megapixel camera on the back which has a superfast aperture of just f1.9, great for low light and taking shots quickly. Selfie fans will get great use out of the 5MP front-facing camera and everyone will enjoy the blazingly fast speed thanks to a quad-core Exynos chip and 3GB RAM.

Samsung announced a double threat at Mobile World Congress this year, with the Galaxy S6 Edge sharing its siblings top drawer spec while adding the unique touch of a screen which curves away from the user on either side of the handset. The upside for you is that the S6 Edge looks and feels great (especially thanks to the revamped build quality) and the curved screen area provides some unique functionality. In sleep mode, you can use it to view and dismiss notifications or access extra buttons without having to use the main screen.
