The History of Krispy Kreme Krispy Kreme was first launched in 1937 and customers have been enjoying their freshly made doughnuts made from premium ingredients for over 80 years. In 1933, Vernon Rudolph was 18 years old and brought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans-French chef. He then opened a doughnut shop in Paducah, Kentucky and began selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts to local grocery and convenience stores with his uncle Ishmael Armstrong. The delicious smell of his doughnuts cooking dri ed into the streets and people walking by stopped to ask if they could buy his hot doughnuts. It was said that Rudolph then cut a hole in an outside wall and started selling his hot glazed doughnuts directly to passers-by on the sidewalk. On 13th July 1937 then Rudolph moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he opened his own and first Krispy Kreme Doughnut shop. Some people say he was attracted to the City because that’s where his favourite Camel cigarettes came from. The Krispy Kreme logo was designed by Benny Dinkins, a local architect and the first Krispy Kreme bakery that was opened outside of the South region was in Akron, Ohio in 1939. In 1944 a er the war, the Krispy Kreme Display Case was designed and the top of the case served as a counter in the shops. The display case showed o the variety of doughnuts that were available including; cake doughnuts, yeast doughnuts and cake sticks. The Krispy Kreme display case is still renowned today and you can’t miss it in the Krispy Kreme shops and outlets. In 1955 the Krispy Kreme bowtie logo was trademarked with familiar green and red colouring. In 1989 the first Krispy Kreme Retail Store opened in High Point Road in Greensboro, North Carolina. The store brought the Krispy Kreme doughnuts out to customers on the 180 curve production line. The company branded themselves by talking about own blend of genuine ingredients for their doughnuts which included each of their unique employees.

In 1992 the Krispy Kreme ‘Hot Now’ light was developed which told customers that if the light was glowing fresh doughnuts were being made and they could buy them hot, just delicious. Krispy Kreme expanded quickly as a public company between 2000 and 2016 and its ambitious growth plans proved unprofitable so in 2016 Krispy Kreme was brought by JAN Holding Company in Luxembourg returning it to private ownership. In 2018 Krispy Kreme launched a new and exciting Theatre Store in Blanchardstown, Dublin Ireland where customers can taste fresh, hot doughnuts as they are produced.

Every year participants in Raleigh, North Carolina race 2.5 miles to a Krispy Kreme store, eat a dozen doughnuts and then run back to the finish line in under an hour. Proceeds of the race go towards North Carolina Children’s Hospital. In 2017 the proceeds totalled a massive $190,000.
