Welcome Welcome to our Winter issue of Drivetime. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us, this year, while introducing Drivetime to you as a free magazine for the Carriage Driving Community. As a result of the enthusiastic response, we have now been able to produce the magazine as a Quarterly publication, on a National basis, and still retained it as free-to-pick-up. We care passionately about Carriage Driving and will endeavour to promote all aspects of the sport. Considering the huge costs involved in transportation and all the new legislation, people are still determined to travel the length and breadth of the country to attend shows, so lets hope that 2010 brings some better news on the financial front.

op carriage driver Georgina Frith, sponsored by Abbey Saddlery, handed over the reins to Boyd Exell earlier this year as she awaited the arrival of her first baby. Based near Dorking in Surrey, Georgina is supported in her efforts by Abbey Saddlery who provide Pro-Equine boots for the horses and Abbey Bits. Saracen Horse Feeds also provide Georgina with feed. Drivetime catches up with Georgina who recently gave birth to her daughter Sophie Ann Collingwood Hunt and is now looking forward to getting back in the driving seat.... Will you be up and running for the World Equestrian Games 2010 in Kentucky? Definitely! The horses have been ticking over this year. My pregnancy has given me the opportunity to take a step back and analyse more carefully what needs to be done to achieve that aim rather than be on the merry-go-round of a competition every other weekend which inevitably makes you focus short term. Each horse has had more individual attention as I stopped driving four-in-hand some time before I stopped driving pairs and singles. They are also being worked under saddle and from the
Words by Linda Warburton ground to help with suppleness, obedience and muscle building. I will put every effort into preparing myself, my team and my support crew so that we are in a position to represent the country a professional way. However the reality is that without BEF funding for the flights I am not personally financially in a position to make the trip, and have to be realistic about the number of fairy god mothers there really are! Boyd Exell has done so well this year, but how many of your horses has he used during this season? Boyd bought one horse from me last year who he used very successfully at Royal Windsor. Unfortunately he slipped and damaged his knee on the exit of the last obstacle after a very fast winning round and has had to have surgery and rest for the rest of the year. Luckily one of my wheelers was able to take his place and he uses him for all phases of the competition in the wheel (either side depending on who he is driven with).
my daughter is only a few months old and I am already on the box seat What made you decide on Boyd, other than his obvious winning form? Boyd and I have a long-standing friendship from when he first moved to England and worked for Alwyn Holder just down the road from me. We have worked together on numerous projects from breaking and training, to displays and championship preparation and execution. Importantly I trust him to look after my horses and have great faith in his insight into

each of their characters which
ensures that they are treated fairly and encouraged to give their best performance. We have similar amounts of competitive spirit which makes the whole thing a lot of fun! When finding a horse for driving do you generally prefer mares or geldings or would you aim to mix the team? I used to mix the genders without hesitation when I drove ponies, but with the horses I have a strict no mare policy and the yard is much more peaceful as a result. I like my horses to be horses as much as possible and herd them together for as much relaxed turn out as possible. They are now too valuable to risk them fighting in the playground over who’s kissing whom behind the bike sheds! If your horses are going to be fit for 2010, do you think you will be under pressure to match
your own fitness following the pregnancy? Of course. It would be irresponsible to sit behind such a powerful competition fit team if I didn’t feel up to it. However, my daughter is only a few months old and I am already on the box seat so I think I have enough time through the winter to achieve full fitness by the beginning of the season. What happens once she’s toddling is another question!

A
lthough in terms of value it isn’t ‘expensive’, good quality leather driving harness and equipment costs a lot of money. Carefully looked after, it holds its value very well and provides service throughout the life of the horse or pony. Badly treated, it can be well nigh valueless. But of course, it isn’t just the cosmetic appeal that is important. Welfare and safety are big issues too. Like any articles made from leather, if it isn’t cared for and ‘fed’, harness will dry out and may crack – even break. ‘Time’ is a big factor. Arriving home – maybe late and tired – after splashing through puddles and mud, it’s tempting to put cleaning off until the next day. That’s fatal! The mud will have dried and hardened and be ten times more difficult to remove! Far better to wipe all the mud off immediately – and then put the harness somewhere it can dry out slowly – well away from a widow where heat from the sun can penetrate in the summer – and never near a radiator or other artificial heat in the winter.
Some golden rules n H arness should be taken apart on a regular basis. Preferably once a week, less often if time is really scarce – but always consistently. Every item should be checked over carefully for wear – and this applies to both the leather and the metal parts. n Avoid potential accidents by arranging repair immediately any wear is detected. In the case of made-to-measure harness, it is advisable to return to the original harness-maker who will match the materials and stitching exactly. n Repairs to off-the-peg harness should be undertaken by a Society of Master Saddlers’ Master or Qualified Harness-maker. n Use proprietary leather care products strictly in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. Avoid the temptation to use a little more than advised – too much is equally as bad as too little!

n The surface of patent leather is sealed and it will not absorb dressing. After any mud and splashes have been removed, it can be ‘shined’ with a proprietary spray (some drivers prefer to use Pledge or Sheen!). n Clean the metal parts thoroughly. Brass parts can be polished with Brasso which is easier to use than liquid polish. Stainless steel can be washed in warm soapy water and then polished with a soft cloth. n After cleaning is completed, the harness should be reassembled. It is best hung on a curved, custom-made rack but if this isn’t available, a saddle rack is a fairly good alternative. n Check out insurance policies carefully to ensure there aren’t special conditions or exclusions to the cover provided for tack and equipment. New Wheels in Wales Sensational new club for carriage driving enthusiasts in South and West Wales
Lester Dagge recently hung up his mantle as ‘Hereford Dagge’ and moved back to Carmarthenshire to discover an untapped resource in a wealth of carriage driving talent in West Wales. Used to a very active driving community, Lester found it a culture shock to discover that despite an inkling of driving in the region, there was still room to promote and develop this raw talent. Lester felt the need for better communications and availability of information for the planned events. It was clear to Lester that there was a need for a serious forum for carriage driving enthusiasts to meet and share information. A venue and speaker were found and posters went out... and hey presto a new driving club was borne. The Dyfed Carriage Club was formed drawing on the old collective names of the countries of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. The Club meet on the first Monday of every month at the Whitemill Inn near Carmarthen and they are affiliated to the BDS. DT

Carriage Drive across Ireland

T
he tale starts when Joe Egan, world famous boxer and sparing partner of Mike Tyson and good friend of Robert Bowman of Cumbria found a stagecoach in a very tired state in a barn in County Galway. Robert had always wanted to own a stagecoach that had a colourful history and decided to purchase the vehicle. The Molly Malone did not fail to deliver and during its painful restoration, musket balls fired from a flintlock were found embedded in the woodwork. According to the archives from Blarney Castle by Barrister and QC Jack Colllinson, The Molly Malone was originally built by O’Shea of
Mullingar, who up to that point had only built jaunting carts and originally ran from Limerick to Dublin 1865. The trip took three days, weather and Guinness permitting. On one occasion, for a wager of 100 guineas, the coach completed the journey in two days with an average speed of 12 mph. Travelling at this speed had never been heard of before. On Monday 21st September 2009 at 9am the Bowman family set off from Limerick to recreate the original route that the stagecoach would have taken. George Bowman Snr; well accomplished at driving Stagecoaches and the most experienced was happy to drive the first part of the journey. On
board for the first leg of the journey was The Mayor of Limerick who had a great time and was thoroughly impressed with everything. The Molly Malone Coach looked magnificent with an old fashioned Barrel of Guinness on the top (unfortunately it was empty!) There were three Teams of horses traveling the route and a few spares (16 in total), three horse transporters with trailers and a crew of 22 plus a film crew and photographer from Cavewood Studios, Hull. Each team of horses and driver did two sections of the journey with horse boxes on hand at each changeover. The total mileage for the journey was 133 miles.

People were really generous with donations. All the proceeds went to the children’s charity ‘Barretstown,’ a ‘Hole in the Wall Camp’ which looks to rebuild lives affected by childhood cancer.

The stops over the four days were generally at pubs and hotels in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, Kildare Town, Co. Kildare, Dunboyne, Co. Meath and finally at the Conrad Hotel, St Stephens Green, Dublin. All proved very generous at putting on lunch and Guinness for the entire team plus there were always many curious and happy locals that had gathered to see the coach and horses. Other people had traveled over the Irish Sea from home to offer their support along the way. The journey was on schedule and the coach arrived in Dublin on Thursday as planned. The Mayor of Dublin was invited on board and Steve Collins the Irish Boxer accompanied the coach
Drivetime on horseback as a highway man collecting money and handing out leaflets. When stabled overnight in the hotels such as Racket Hall & Dunboyne Castle the management put local Irish bands on as entertainment, plus during the entire journey, the ABBA tribute band traveled on the coach and sang every night – they were great at collecting money and proved to be a fantastic and fun attention grabber. This was very much a family trip with George Bowman Snr, Robert Bowman, George Bowman 4th & Barnaby Bowman driving. The rest of the crew consisted of Grooms, a horn blower and Horse box drivers One of the highlights of the trip was taking Lord Ivy (The Guinness Heir) through Phoenix Park to Farmleigh his old ancestral house where he was born. It was very nostalgic for him and brought back lots of good childhood memories. Sponsors of this trip included Eddie Stobbarts and Cumbria Homes – whom the team would like to say a big thank you to – And the rest was sponsored by the Bowman family with all money raised along the way going the Barretstown Children’s Hospice. George Bowman 4th said “The Trip was more successful than anticipated and fully enjoyed by all those involved, it was a great experience for all the family and a great way to help charity. Driving ponies: harnessing potential A life Changing Experience
S
ports Driving Unlimited is a charity that aims to make the sport of carriage driving more widely available to anyone who is disadvantaged, has a disability or is terminally ill. The charity, based in Lockerbie, blends the exhilaration and excitement of sports carriage driving and therapeutic involvement with ponies with the expertise of developing individual confidence, motivation and sense of achievement. Participants can be involved in sports driving to any and all levels whether for fun, as a hobby or more seriously in sports driving competitions. The Trustees have a wide range of knowledge and experience including health and social services, Pony Club, training, legal services and equine welfare; and each has an interest
in equestrian sports driving. David Broome, twice Olympic medal winner and consecutive European and world champion is the Patron. Amanda Saville, a sports driving champion at both Scottish and National level, is the primary coach and has successfully trained a disabled driver to be World Disabled Pairs Gold and Bronze medalist. Amanda also trains young drivers who have become National Junior Indoor and Outdoor champions on several occasions. Participants are trained in all aspects of working with ponies, including stable-craft and care of equipment as well as the skills required for successful sports driving. Each person’s training is tailored to their own preferences and abilities. Participants learn to drive a pony at walk, trot and if they wish at canter and group
sessions include competitive games. They can go on to enjoy the thrill of competitive sports driving in open competition and engage in teamwork with other sports drivers, both disabled and able bodied. All these activities help to increase self esteem, self reliance, motivation, confidence and social skills A particular benefit is how children with a disability come out of themselves when interacting with the ponies. Inhibitions fall by the wayside and they start to communicate much more than usual. Feedback received from participants, parents and carers informs us that these activities have had an ongoing positive impact. For example improvements in general behaviour and mood and verbal communication of participants are

attributed to their regular participation in sports driving. Michael Hodgson and his rescued Shetland Pony Winford Brown Sugar (Brownie for short!) retained the Sports Driving Unlimited Shield for drivers 10 – 14 years old at the recent National Indoor Championships 2009. They won the shield for the first time last year. Brownie was rescued from slaughter along with his stable friend, Blackie, and both Shetlands came into the family as un-broken wild stallions. They are now both ridden and driven individually and in a tandem. The caliber of Michael’s driving at these Championships again made him a well deserving winner of the shield. His speed through the obstacles made the adults sit up and take notice, starting at a full gallop and finishing with no reduction in pace!! Brownie obviously just loves his job! The charity is delighted to donate the shield for this competition and even more chuffed that it was won by a rescued pony! DT

ack in the days of yore, Dalmatians were frequently used by Carriage Drives as guards to accompany the horses and carriages on their various journeys. Not only were they used to protect the passengers as they traveled through the wilds of the British Countryside, but they were also handy for hunting and killing the vermin in the stables overnight and to reassure the horses. They were initially introduced into this country at the beginning of the 17th century when younger members of the aristocracy bought them back from their travels in Europe. No doubt part of their appeal was their unusual appearance but Dalmatians also have incredibly strong feet and legs which help them to easily travel long distances, ideal for the rough roads on which the carriages traveled.
Each year the Society holds National Trials which provide a modern competition to demonstrate the Dalmatian’s traditional role as a companion to horses and carriages. It is both an endurance and obedience event and all competing dogs must do a basic obedience test alongside their handler’s horse or carriage. The aim of the obedience test is to replicate, as far as possible, modern horse and carriage working environments, where the dog must be under the handler’s control at all times. The endurance element tests each competing Dalmatian’s stamina and capacity for work. It is essential that the dog shows

willingness and enjoyment of its work throughout the trial. One such driver within the Carriage Dog Society is Anne Dickens who is based in Ashford, Kent and Drivetime caught up with Anne after seeing her take part in the London Harness Horse Parade at the Ardingly

I asked Anne what came first for her, was it her love of dogs or Heavy horses? Anne rides a beautiful Percheron. “Dogs first” answered Anne, “We always had dogs in the family when I was younger, there were many different breeds including a wonderful Dalmatian called Penny. I also rode and had my own cob, but never had anything to do with heavies. I vowed to myself that I would own a Dalmatian again one day. 25 years later, that dream came true when I moved from
London to Sussex. Later when I got my Dalmatian I was riding other people’s horses, after a series of competition horses I felt I was getting back into riding. I was lucky enough to have a dog of a high show quality, so I made friends with lots of other people in the Dalmatian show world. Some of them were involved with starting Carriage Dog Trials in this country. UK trials founder Alison Burgess, also a carriage driver, had been to the United States to observe their trials and decided to get them going over here. That was in 2003 when the first Trials were held. I stewarded at those trials and have competed ever since. Firstly I borrowed horses to work with my first Dalmatian ‘Munin’, now seven and a half years old, in the Road Dog Trials. I then acquired a pony and he and I learned to drive so that we could do carriage work”. Anne explained
how difficult it was to train a new dog. “Some Dalmations” says Anne “have very strong instincts to work with carriages and will work behind them naturally with little actual training. Others require more time and training. Many, including my own boy, have an instinct to work at the front. That is tricky as the modern carriage dog trials requires the dog to be alongside or behind for safety. This means dedicated training. Dalmatians respond well to positive reinforcement, so that is how we train them. They also love exercise and love being out with their owners, so being part of a team with the horse suits them. Dalmatians are endurance dogs and have a highly efficient trot, once they get into a groove behind a carriage they can go for miles without tiring.” Anne does not generally breed her own Dalmatians as she loves having the puppies around but hates to let them go. She did breed one litter as she wanted another dog and now has Fenris who is three and a half years old.

I wanted to know if it was traditional to work a Carriage Dog with a heavy horse and according to Anne this would not be the case. The history of the Carriage Dog is not formally recorded, but pictures from the 18th and 19th centuries show dogs working with lots of different carriages including private road vehicles and coaches. They would accompany and guard passengers and the horses and would also be there to decorate the turnout and look pretty. As heavy horses tended to work with merchants, brewers, farmers etc. with no need to decorate their vehicles with dogs and without passengers to guard, there is no tradition of heavies working with Dalmatians. As Anne states “Perhaps I have started a trend”. Anne is a member of the Working Horse Trust and volunteered to work with them for a season. Whilst working she admired the single Percheron they had in their ‘collection’. She liked the stature of the breed, the height and the bulk with relatively

clean legs. As Anne is 6’ tall herself, she prefers to ride a horse that is over 17hh. She now has her own Percheron ‘Nobel’ who is an 18hh heavy French type. Anne says “they are not particularly fashionable these days, as Percherons are being bred lighter in the UK”. Fashionable or not, I was certainly impressed by Nobel when I saw him earlier this year. Anne’s dogs do most of their work with her pair of 11.2hh spotty ponies. Anne says “It is a much easier turnout to take out on the road. Unfortunately I have no off road where I live so everything has to be done with cars in mind. Also, it’s quite hard to work the dogs behind Nobel’s large wagonette, because they can’t see me way up on the driver’s seat. So we are practicing. I have not had Nobel a year yet, but he is very good with the dogs. I’ve really enjoyed my first year owning a heavy horse. He’s lovely and he gets on with the ponies really well. My dogs have qualified as Silver and Gold carriage dogs having completed 20kms and 40kms respectively.
Some Dalmations have very strong instincts to work with carriages and will work behind them naturally That was with the ponies. Nobel has been to a number of displays at country shows where he and the dogs always turn heads. We usually come last in any driven class, as we don’t have the fancy vehicle and posh harness, but we don’t mind as the spectators love to see him and the dogs. When Anne first bought Nobel he was white. During the time Anne has had him he has developed a few small spots all over his body. Says Anne, “this happened to my second pony too who came to me with about five spots and now has hundreds. Carriages as Status Symbols
Pomp & Power Museum of London to host a two-day conference on carriages as status symbols
T
o celebrate the installation of the Lord Mayor’s Coach in the City Gallery in November 2009, in advance of the launch of the new Galleries of Modern London in Spring 2010, Museum of London will host a two-day conference about carriages as status symbols, and the influence of English carriage design and manufacture abroad. The conference brings together experts from around Europe and the USA who will explore different aspects of the coachbuilding trade in London and examine particular coaches made in Britain and Ireland from the 17th to the 19th century. The social history of carriages will be discussed as well as French and British influences on British carriage design. Rudolf Wackernagel is a key speaker who will be talking about the development of carriages in England and France.

David Mitchell is a fantastic academic who will be talking about innovations in the coach building trade. Janet Jones is an interior designer who worked on the refurbishment of Mansion House, the Lord Mayor’s residence and has done extensive research on the coach décor. Silvana Bessone is Head of Lisbon Carriage Collection, the best collection in the world and will be looking at the relationship between Britain and Portugal in terms of coaches. John Greene will talk about the appeal of coaches as a place of seduction. As you can see there are an incredible range of speakers from all over the world coming together to talk about the magnificence of coaches. The following weekend sees the annual Lord Mayor’s Show in London. This is the annual outing for the Lord Mayor’s Coach, when it can be seen and admired by the public as it would have been over 300
Drivetime years ago. The Museum, along with the City of London, cares for the coach and has a team of expert conservators to ensure the Coach is prepared for the outing. The Coach is one of the Museum’s star exhibits and for the first time the stunning carriage will have a spectacular new home in a purpose built glass-fronted gallery. The Galleries of Modern London will open in spring 2010 and the Lord Mayor’s Coach will be the only exhibit to be on 24 hour display. It has become apparent that the original Article of Agreement that commissioned the construction of the Lord Mayor’s Coach in 1757 is missing. A copy is held in The National Archive and it is believed the original agreement is now in private hands. The Museum is seeking to locate this and would be very pleased to receive any information which may help in the search. Spaces are still available for the conference on 12-13 November 2009.
