Special Olympics Overview

History

HISTORY It all began in the 1950s and early 1960s, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver saw how unjustly and unfairly people with intellectual disabilities were treated. She also saw that many children with intellectual disabilities didn’t even have a place to play, and so she decided to take action. Soon, her vision began to take shape; she held a summer day camp for young people with intellectual disabilities in her own backyard. The goal was to learn what these children could do in sports and other activities – and not dwell on what they could not do.

Throughout the 1960s, Eunice Kennedy Shriver continued her pioneering work -- both as the driving force behind President John F. Kennedy’s White House panel on people with intellectual disabilities and as the director of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation. Her vision and drive for justice eventually grew into the Special Olympics movement. By 2014, more than 4.4 million athletes, worldwide, took part in the 80,000 annual Special Olympics events.

Philosophy

PHILOSOPHY Special Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports every day around the world. We empower people with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all. Using sports as the catalyst and programming around health and education, Special Olympics is fighting inactivity, injustice and intolerance.

About Art Center College of Design

ABOUT ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN Since Art Center was founded in 1930, engagement with industry has been a critical element of the student experience. Industry collaborations take on a variety of forms, but the intention and promise is always the same: high-quality, professional experiences that bring current industry challenges and opportunities into the classroom and provide students the context for imagining future solutions. In one of the college’s most exciting programs, partners have the opportunity to sponsor studios in which select groups of upper-term undergraduate and graduate students work in multidisciplinary teams to explore a broad range of topics. These unique collaborations between design education and industry challenge students to envision the future and inspire partners to create change. Collaborating in projects with nonprofits such as the Special Olympics 2015 World Summer Games

Organizing Committee Inc. have proven to be some of Art Centers’ richest and most rewarding engagements. In the last year alone, Art Center collaborated with 25 different corporate sponsors and civic organizations to explore a diverse range of topics from the future of air travel to new medical devices and services to branded experience for the Special Olympics 2015. Students worked with the Special Olympics Committee for the 2015 World Games. They developed branding, wayfinding, and giving the games a cohesive identity throughout the city LA.

About Art Center College of Design

ART CENTER TEAM The first four months of this project were devoted to ideation, mission and design. In the beginning there were five teams that spent weeks complying study models and concepts, testing each one’s potential. By midterm, we had divided up the class into two main groups, Team Bruisers and Team Orange. Team Bruisers focused mainly on fractals and facets while Team Orange focused on circles and curves. This culminated in a full scale, proof of concept build which took up two full outdoor lawns at Art Center’s Pasadena, Hillside Campus. We even had fabricators help us with the scaled mock-ups. The later months were dedicated to production and execution. WIth a team of mostly new students, the fresh eyes brought many new insights into the project and provided the fine tuning needed to see it through until the end. Overall, we as students learned how to work together as a team as well as working one-on-one with the clients. We are honored to be able to say that we were part of the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015.

Key Drivers

KEY AESTHETIC DRIVERS We were especially inspired by the reach-up gesture and unity of the Special Olympics logo. The full logo represents this gathering and unity of people; the circle of inclusion. The celebratory reach up pose signifies the respect, enthusiasm, acceptance, compassion, heart, and

unified play of all involved. This is shown through our iconic, gestural structures that almost seem to be celebrating as well--dancing with arms reaching to the sky. We wanted to create an all encompassing experience of the Special Olympics brand that no one would ever forget.

TYPOLOGIES WAYFINDING The reach-ups are our realization of the celebratory pose, and are to be placed at the bookends of the festivals areas at every venue in groups of three. They provide spectators a semi-shaded, branded place to sit, relax, and enjoy the outdoor festivities. The directionals provide a universally understandable approach to wayfinding. We wanted people of all backgrounds and languages to be able to get where they need to go with ease. The greeters are to be placed at all of the possible entrances to a venue. They are the first visual cue that you have arrived at the Special Olympics.

A gradient of banners reinforce athlete stories and the color coded wayfinding system. Facade banners are iconic pieces that herald arrival at venues. They too reinforce the color coded wayfinding system while celebrating the joy and dynamism of sport.

TYPOLOGIES STRUCTURES The arches serve as iconic connection points for the spectators. From the large entrance arches, which first connects the viewer to the World Games to the medium arches that doubles as either a finish line for athletes or a smaller welcome piece, to the small photo arches, helping inspire people to connect to the world. The tents are multi-purpose. They are mainly used to provide temporary shaded gathering spaces for spectators to get out of the hot sun. But they can also double as, for example, Special Olympics medical tents. The info booths are the main source of information for spectators. They are to be located in the central hub of the festival areas.

Strategy

SITE STRATEGY Of the thirteen competing and noncompeting venues, there are three basic types:

• Type 1 : Large, Multi-Building Venues (Case Study 1 : UCLA) • Type 2 : Large, Outdoor Sprawling Venues (Case Study 2 : Long Beach) • Type 3 : Small, Quaint Venues (Case Study 3 : LA Equestrian Center in Griffith Park) Over the course of our eight-month exploration, we have broken down and studied these three basic venue types in order to help get a better idea of what is needed and where. Despite their differences, there is an underlying strategic method to each site.

The placement of system elements focuses traffic along the main arteries and festival areas of each event experience. From start to finish, the overall system moves gradually from an individual based experience at entry to a unifying crowd based experience in the sports venues. From engaging with individual athletes and their stories, to celebrating the Special Olympics with fellow international attendees. Traffic is then directional, with experiences and color coded elements pushing event goers to the main festival areas, where there is the highest concentration of people gathering and uniting in celebration. The diagram below indicates our general site strategy and approach. As spectators and athletes get closer to the festival area, the epicenter of each venue, the intensity of objects gets greater. This is to slowly build excitement into a culminating explosion of the Special Olympics spirit while simultaneously unifying people within that built experience.

Location Case Studies

UCLA

Large, Multi-Building Venues Case Study 1

UCLA STRATEGY The UCLA venue was used as the kick-off point of our designs. As a team, we decided that UCLA was one of the most diverse and challenging venues out of all the Special Olympics venue hubs. The campus is large and difficult to navigate through, with indoor and outdoor activities that last for long periods of time. Because the UCLA campus is so large, our focus was to keep self-orientation as easy as possible, all while keeping spectators close together and preventing them from spreading out too much around the venue. First, we overlaid UCLA with a color gradient that goes from warm to cool to hot starting from the right to left. This way, there will be a feel of color zones throughout the campus and visitors and spectators can orient themselves by noticing which color zone they are currently in. We decorated Bruin Walk with large landmarks and Reach-Up structures to channel spectators through this walkway. We also placed the main festivities at Bruin Plaza, at the east end of Bruin Walk, to act as a main hub and largest landmark throughout the whole campus.

54

Special Olympics Los Angeles 2015 Design Guidelines

We first approached these studies by breaking down each site and stripping them to their basic elements. You will see this in the upcoming site strategy maps. We wanted to simplify the amenities spaces to only what people will need to know in order to have a successful Special Olympics. After mapping out the main zones and circulatory journeys of athletes, spectators and automotive traffic we were able to determine the exact locations of where wayfinding would be needed as well as the main festivities areas, which is where the concentration of elements will be located. At each venue, all of the individual sports have been given an identifiable color to help guide people to the correct location. This simplified color key system will provide the attending international audience with an easily understandable system, despite lingual differences.

Long Beach

Large, Outdoor Venues Case Study 2

Long Beach STRATEGY The Long Beach venue is a very complex. It has three different main sport hubs–Alamitos Beach, Belmont Pier, and Marine Stadium. Belmont Pier hosts sailing, Marine Stadium hosts kayaking, and Alamitos Beach hosts the triathlon, cycling, the half-marathon, beach volleyball, and open water swim. We decided to focus on the most intricate of hubs, Alamitos Beach, to determine the best system strategy to use as a reference to the other locations. The system maps are divided into Site Strategy, Sports Paths and Element Location Plan. Since Alamitos Beach is an outdoor and public location, the structures must be set up and taken down every day there is an event. Therefore, the structures placed at this location must be limited and simple. There will not be much festivities occurring at this site (purely for observing or participating in the events), and the more complex structures are limited to one. Also, since the sport events are not happening simultaneously, the structures can be easily moved and repurposed within the Long Beach Venues.

We first approached these studies by breaking down each site and stripping them to their basic elements. You will see this in the upcoming site strategy maps. We wanted to simplify the amenities spaces to only what people will need to know in order to have a successful Special Olympics. After mapping out the main zones and circulatory journeys of athletes, spectators and automotive traffic, we were able to determine the exact locations of where wayfinding would be needed as well as the main festivities areas, which is where the concentration of elements will be located. At each venue, each of the individual sports have been given an identifiable color to help guide people to the correct location. This simplified color key system will provide the attending international audience with an easily understandable system, despite lingual differences.

L.A. Equestrian Center STRATEGY The strategy for this type of site is to create a journey for all its visitors. Centralized in the primary area of activity and spreading out into the rest of the site, bigger structures like the “Arch” are used to bookend the area of use. Unlike the other sites that will be used during the 2015 World Games, the strategy of the equestrian center focuses on creating as much energy within the space as possible without the use of larger structures like the “Reach Up.” This is a smaller space. Using the “Facade Graphics” to emphasize the main gathering hub of the space creates a stronger sense of space and focuses the energy within this main area. There are two scenarios at this site. The first is if the north most parking garage is open to the public; the second is if the north most parking garage is closed.

REACH-UP, GREETERS, DIRECTIONAL (LARGE), DIRECTIONAL (MEDIUM), DIRECTIONAL (SMALL)

The wayfinding structures lead and direct people to their desired destinations using a big, bold, simple and universally understandable graphic strategy. In order of appearance, we start with the greeters who are the first touch points for the spectators. This is followed by a large general directional to acquaint you with the spaces ahead. Then the medium directional, which means that you are getting closer to a specific venue. The small directionals are located directly outside of a specific event. And finally the reach-up. The reach-ups bookend the main festival areas. They are to be in groups of three and surrounded by modular seating to reinforce unification in a spatial gathering moment. The wayfinding utilizes circular panels that represent the unity and togetherness of the Special Olympics. These panels are of many different sizes and are each used for different hierarchical purposes. Each panel is applied to a white aluminum structure that towers over people like beacons. The overall color strategy is the use of vibrant colors against a dark fractaled background. The white type stands out against the dark background. There is also a layering and offsetting of these panels to create depth and interest when applied to the structures.

GRAPHIC ASSETS MAPS (60", 42") The map is used to navigate athletes, fans and event workers through each venue, while still communicating unification of people. It was created using a ¾” square grid and simple geometric shapes to resemble landmarks and provide clear pathways to navigate through the event. There are two sizes of the map 42” and 60”. The large 60” maps will be placed on all reach up structures. The coloration plays an important role in event navigation as well as conveying the brand concept. Each building is coordinated by the color key system and sports iconography. The 42” map is scaled 70% smaller than the 60” map. New maps should be designed in the 60” scale, outlined, and then scaled to 70%.

GRAPHIC ASSETS PICTOGRAM ICONOGRAPHY We have chosen an oversized icon based graphic system because of its universality of understandability. The goal is to have each person from any language be able to understand the graphic and its meaning. Like the Special Olympics itself, the system is more about the athletes themselves rather than the sports. Each icon consists of two parts, a colorful fractal background and a white figure. This color background will dictate the color of that sport and associated venue. For example, the volleyball icon is in front of a blue background. Therefore, volleyball is blue, and so too is Pauley Pavilion. This overview shows how the system works together.

SPORT ICONOGRAPHY FIGURE Inspired by action photography, this iconography uses hard angular shapes to continue brand consistency and message that is present within the logo. An angular shape was developed as a spacing mechanism to create dynamic negative shapes. Although there is no grid for these icons, a consistent stylized persona must remain. Simplicity of shapes, exaggerated poses, and longer legs are important attributes to take into consideration. All iconography has been designed within a 4 1â „2" circle, and then scaled for different uses. Keeping this scale while designing is another important factor to continue consistency.

FRACTAL COLOR CREATION These are 15 examples of possible color combinations for sports iconography and other branding applications. Color and shape consistency is created using the different blending options and opacities listed below. The full chroma color system takes inspiration from the logo construction. The diversity of color helps strengthen the overall brand message, while gradation helps unify and tie the system together in a cohesive manner. The 15 color system may be recycled throughout different venues. For example, volleyball and open swim could potentially be blue because they exist at different venues.

REACH UP

The reach up structures are the realization of the celebratory gesture. They bring an explosion of color to the venues and bookend the main festival areas. The structural strategy utilizes an aluminum tower structure along with a larger base to create seating, branches at the top of the structure with colorful mosaic panels, and seating placed all around the base. They are to be placed in groups three so that they bring a sense of space for gathering, resting, interaction, and community.

REACH UP MOSAIC COLOR PANELS

Utilizing the color mosaic backgrounds from the sport icons, we wanted to create colorful explosion of kinetic celebration. Each of the top panels are sandwiched around the unrolled conduit and can spin on their axis. As the wind hits the structure, the dangling arms will dance with the Special Olympic’s spirit. As for the bottom part of the reach up, there will also be a few of these panels, fixed, just to add even more color. The rings are to appear random. 3'-10" 3'-0"

BANNERS / OUTDOOR

As event-goers and athletes move through the event venue, the banners function as an inspirational color way that allude to the spirit of Special Olympics athletes and spirit of the event. They reinforce the story of the athlete and the color coded wayfinding system. The vinyl R.E.A.C.H. banners can go anywhere where they can be hanged; mostly light poles and

BANNERS / FACADE

Facade banners are iconic pieces that herald arrival at venues. The graphic marks the entrance to each color-coded venue by celebrating the joy and dynamism of sport. The dark to light fractal motif symbolizes how the athletes move away from an oppressive darkness and into the light that is courage, determination, and joy. The faceted graphic represents the celebration of uniqueness, diversity, and competition.

Each banners is created using the particular color of the associated sport dictated by the color key system. This is to reinforce the wayfinding system. As a secondary application, these graphics can also be scaled and used as podium backdrops.

ARCHES The arches serve as iconic connection points and visual landmarks for the spectators. From the large entrance arches which first connects the viewer to the World Games, to the medium arches which doubles as either a finish line for athletes or a smaller welcome piece, to the small photo arches which help inspire people to connect to the world. They evoke moods of empowerment, grandeur and uplifting achievements. In the logo, the multi colored facets represent the flag colors of all of the participating countries which is why a full three dimensional expression of that logo make for a perfect welcome statement, a perfect finish line, and a perfect photo opportunity.

All arches are made of lightweight aluminum sculpted to represent the circle of inclusion of the logo. High tension fabric is then printed and wrapped around the frame. There will also be a small lighting fixture setup located somewhere inside the frame. At night, the goal is to have light slowly graze upwards towards the top of structure. This will make the arches come alive.

The two side panels are another World Games logo (new curved lock up) message in the rise of the arch against the full chroma fractal pattern from the logo. We chose the full chroma mosaic pattern because it represents flags of all nations, backgrounds and cultures which makes for the perfect welcome gesture. The three fabric strips are to be sewn and then zippered on one side. In order to keep the fabric from riding up, it is imperative that it be velcroed to the base.

TENTS The Special Olympic tents will be placed within the designated main tent areas with a few scattered throughout high activity centers. These tents and their dome shape, inspired by the circle of inclusion, represent unity, inclusion and empowerment. These tents act as gathering hubs for people to come together and interact with one another. The tents afford a shaded respite for athletes and spectators. Within the tents, they will be broadcasting current game scores, athlete stories and other applicable information. Their main purpose is to house a fun interactive experience/lounge space but they can also double as medical tents, guest lounges and any other program that might require a little bit more privacy than the open outdoors. Inside the tents there will be a small variety of seating options which will help foster unification and comfort. The dome structures are created using a lightweight aluminum structure covered in stretched printed fabric. The white background provide a suitable background which makes the World Games logo pop.

INFORMATION DESK The information desks provide answers to visitors’ inquiries and questions, as well as house promotional and informational pamphlets and small maps for distribution. They are the main source of information for spectators. The awning, shade structure is inspired from reach-up gestures. It also takes some of its structural form language from the arch structures. Inside the awning, there is to be a lighting fixture which will make the information desk glow at night.

FIELD STAND PERFORATED VINYL INSERT OPTIONS

The top of the field stand is made from two parts, the double sided perforated vinyl which is then sandwiched in between to printed coroplast rings. The vinyl inserts can be changed and repurposed for different events that happen at different times. There are a few different options as to what types of information should be displayed by the field stands. The first option shows the Special Olympics World Game 2015 celebratory figure. It can be snapped on to field stands when needed, and used as an alternative for logo display when floor graphics or banner graphics are not plausible.

The second option is used when stands are placed along courtside as identification numbers or along side long routes to be used as mile markers.

PODIUMS The Unity Podiums are specifically designed for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015. Derived from the unity circle of the brand logo, the podium embraces athletes in a semicircle with the joy & dynamism of sport. Unlike other typical award podiums, The Unity Podium has 8 levels. The reason for this is to show equality between all the athletes and that everyone is a winner. For example, in the team and hybrid podiums, first place has the highest spot, but is in the very back. Similarly, 7th and 8th place have the lowest heights, but are at the very front. Thus, there is equality between all of the athletes and a sense of unity & joy as each receive their medal. The podium is built with a simple plywood framing that is assembled like a box. Each platform has a front, back, and 2 sides. The front and both sides would have a vinyl graphic covering the plywood frame.

This modular construction make it ease to put up, easy to move, and easy to take down. The backdrop is a separate piece of aluminum scaffolding covered with a large vinyl graphic drape. The drape itself can be changed depending on the sport, while the platform graphics can be used for all sports. The Unity Podium is the platform where athletes will be awarded for their participation in the 2015 World Games. As the major media opportunity, the podium is a reflection of the brand as well as what it stands for: unity of athletes from every nation in the world.

DREAM VISION

Dream Vision is a fun crowd-based interaction. It spreads the enthusiasm and energy of the Special Olympics throughout the event venues, web and media outlets. In other words, it bring the high energy levels from inside the venues outside to the festival areas. Dream Vision will re-appropriate the stadium “beach ball experience to capture the Special Olympics Reach Up celebratory gesture from thousands of spectators and athletes in real-time.

HOW IT WORKS The beach ball is embedded with a WIFI camera and thrown into high energy events. As the ball jumps around the crowds, a digital feed is recorded and then sent back out every screen imaginable. The video footage can be streamed throughout the venue, to other venues, and through web and broadcast avenues. Step 1

This is the ultimate unifying experience that connects all of the separate venues together. This interactive experience brings the courage, determination, joy, and energy of the special olympics into every home, cell phone and computer around the world.

Sponsor tents are the same as the Special Olympics tents except they have different fabric graphics. This means that sponsors have two different size choices, medium and large. There will only be a limited number of spaces available for the large sponsor tents because they are 30' by 30'. They will be placed within the designated main tent areas with a few sporadically placed throughout high activity centers. These tents and their dome shape, inspired by the circle of inclusion, represent unity, inclusion and empowerment. These tents act as gathering hubs for people to come together and interact with one another. Within the tents, sponsors will be encouraged to provide their own interactive lounge activities. The dome structures are created using a lightweight aluminum structure covered in stretched printed fabric.
