After completing pre-requisite webinars, our technicians are eligible to participate in distance learning classes in our Ellsworth training room. Several dealers participate interactively with a professional instructor facilitating each class. Dealers are required to make significant investments in multiple dual-screen computers, video cameras and large screens in order to participate in these highly technical, interactive training sessions. Technicians also travel off-site for specialized training along with their ongoing participation in regularly scheduled webinars to keep up with the rapidly changing technology. This training, combined with several hundred thousand dollars in special tools and equipment, plus our extensive service truck fleet, enables our technicians to provide professional, expedient service to keep our customer downtime to a minimum. Our dealership’s up-front investment and training is designed to keep our producers up and running for a more profitable outcome in their farming operations.

Integrated Solutions By Matt Dorman
For several years now we have enjoyed the reliability and accuracy of the StarFire 3000 GPS receiver. It was a huge leap in technology from its predecessor the StarFire ITC. The ability to utilize Russian GLONASS satellites as well as the introduction of 3-D integrated terrain compensation made it the most reliable GPS receiver on the market. In order to continue increasing its lead as being the top precision ag brand in the market, John Deere has introduced its next generation of GPS receivers, the all new StarFire 6000. The John Deere StarFire 6000 Receiver is an enhanced replacement for the StarFire 3000 Receiver and expands on the value that precision agriculture customers have come to expect from StarFire products. The StarFire 6000 Receiver implements an improved antenna, the latest in Global Navigation Satellite System signal processing technology, and a new differential correction signal. All of this new technology adds up to improved performance and reliablility. The StarFire 6000 Receiver offers improved pull-in performance compared to its predecessor. That means the user spends less time waiting for the receiver to achieve full accuracy and can get high-precision jobs like planting and nutrient application started even faster. It also means less time waiting to reacquire full accuracy after an extended shading event, such as running next to trees while planting headlands. The StarFire 6000 Receiver has 252 channels and tracks both GPS (United States) and GLONASS (Russia) satellites. That’s a pretty impressive increase considering the StarFire 3000 already had 66 channels. Tracking as many satellite signals as possible increases the chances of retaining accuracy and performance in challenging areas such as operating near trees. The StarFire 6000 Receiver is also capable of simultaneously tracking correction signals from up to three StarFire correction satellites. The receiver tracks and uses correction signals from all StarFire satellites in view and intelligently chooses one that will deliver the best performance. When the receiver moves into an area where the primary StarFire signal is blocked, such as near a tree line the receiver will automatically switch to an alternate visible StarFire signal to help maintain accuracy and performance. Compare this to the previous StarFire 3000 Receiver that was only capable of tracking one StarFire signal at a time and could wait up to four minutes to switch to the next available signal. Also, software updates will reduce install times from 30 min down to only 3 min! All of these new features are great but I haven’t even gotten to the exciting part yet. We have a new signal available! If you’re not familiar with the different signal levels that John Deere offers through its StarFire network, let me explain. Until recently we have had the option to choose between three different accuracy levels (SF1, SF2 and RTK). SF1 is John Deere’s free signal that comes on all StarFire receivers and has a pass to pass accuracy of +/- 6 inches in a 15 min window. That is much more accurate than a WAAS signal. SF2 is a subscription fee based signal that increases your pass to pass accuracy to +/- 2 inches in a 15 min window. And finally we have RTK which is a sub-inch accuracy signal that has no time limits, allowing your equipment to travel down the exact same pass year after year. Now that I’ve got you up to speed, let me introduce our newest correction signal exclusive to the new StarFire 6000 receiver, SF3. SF3 is like SF2 on steroids. It’s a subscription fee based correction signal that costs the same amount as SF2 but it’s a little more accurate with a lot more repeatability. With an accuracy level +/- 1.2 inches stretched over a 9 month window, this will be a game changer! So if you’re a customer that is looking for RTK accuracy but your fields aren’t in our current RTK network coverage area this would be something to seriously consider. Is SF3 intended to replace the RTK signal? No. There will always be a need for sub-inch accuracy and multi-year repeatability, so you will continue to see Carrico Implement expand and improve its dealer owned RTK network.
Acre Insight
By Ethan Ziegler Do you have years and years of yield data but don’t know what to do with it, or maybe you have soil sample data but you don’t use it to its full capacity. Well look no further, Carrico Implement is proud to Introduce its new Acre Insight program for the upcoming 2017 crop year. To give a brief overview of this all-encompassing program, we take historical yield, soil sampling data, and input cost data and bring you a whole farm precision program. With this data we can start building a plan for the upcoming crop by looking at fertility levels in each field and start benchmarking your field to thousands of anonymized local acres to make better decisions going forward. We can look at hundreds of different layers of data, for example, which seed variety did the best on a certain ph or what population of corn did the best in a certain date range on a certain type of soil with a certain amount of rain? The combination of information that we can compare to is almost endless. Even if you don’t have soil sampling data, we can use yield data going forward to make management zones that we call the A, B, and C Zones. Once we have these zones defined we can then start putting 1 to 4 acre test plots of variable rate seed or fertilizer into an existing prescription. To give you an example we can take an A Zone, as we call it, that always does better than the rest of the field. We have a rate of 24,000 seeds per acre in this zone. We can then put an A Zone high check where we can bump that rate up to 26,000 and since we already have the costs tied to $/bag of seed we can see if what we gained in yield was worth it or not. We can also do this in areas of lower yields so we can stop putting 200 bushel inputs into a piece of ground that only makes 50 bushel. We can do this for fertilizer as well with high checks and low checks. If this is your first time hearing about this it may seem overwhelming, however for the operator there are no additional steps required. This program is designed to make the decision process easier. I cannot do this program justice in this short article, however, if you are interested in knowing more about this program call one of our Precision Ag Specialist to set up a meeting to review what this program can do for you.

New Service Offerings at Carrico Implement By Alan Fabrizius The rapid advancement of technology in our world today has introduced many new ideas, methods and decisions that we now deal with every day. Many of the farming terms we use today weren’t in our vocabulary just a few short years ago. Terms such as GPS, autotrac, field data, machine controllers, swath control, RTK, sub-inch accuracy and many more terms have broken on the scene in the very recent past. And if we believe what the manufacturers are saying, we are just now at the tip of the technology iceberg! With all of the rapid changes in equipment technology, we as dealers are constantly rethinking how best to service and support our customers. Along with the traditional repair role of our skilled and trained technicians, we are evolving additional services to help you get the most out of your equipment and technology. We are very aware that with the cost of equipment & its accompanying technology, you can’t afford to operate at less than maximum efficiency. With those thoughts in mind, I want to talk briefly about three ways that Carrico Implement is evolving to help you optimize your equipment and technology. Continuous training – Each year we make a large investment in the training of our employees. This training is offered in many different forms, and is provided by various vendors. Online webinars and in-house training are offered on nearly a daily basis. Off-site training happens very regularly at times throughout the year when we can allow employees to be gone without lowering our ability to serve our customers. Our interactive training classroom at Ellsworth is also a popular site for training. This facility allows us to access training from the manufacturer without having to travel to a training facility. Overall, it takes a large commitment of time and money to keep our employees educated on all aspects of the equipment, technology and farming practices used in our area. The goal of this training is for them to help you succeed! New services offered – We continue to expand the services we offer to help you succeed. Many of these services are equipment based, such as our popular equipment startup services. We realize that many of our machines are used on a seasonal basis, and it may be difficult to be certain that they are functioning at their best when you begin to use them. Consequently, we offer these startup services to help you optimize your machine from the first acre. A second popular group of service offerings are technology focused. Just as with your equipment, we want to be sure that your technology products are setup correctly and functioning properly every time you go to the field. At times we find that a producer may not be fully utilizing his technology products. We offer services to help you utilize your technology to its fullest, Our newest offerings being focused on helping you succeed agronomically. Services include soil sampling, data collection, data analysis & fertilizing & seeding prescriptions. These services are offered to help our customers maximize production, which can only be accomplished when the proper agronomic decisions are being made. We also want to enhance your profitability through data analysis and proper seed and fertilizer application. Customer Account Management – The final thing I would like to briefly touch on is a process that we have undertaken called Customer Account Management. We feel that the only way we can truly help you be more profitable is by better understanding your operation. We would like to have a better grasp of the areas of your farm that may not be as efficient or profitable as you would like for them to be. We can then help tailor our solutions to your operation to help you. The goal of Customer Account Management is to develop a better relationship with you through a better understanding of your operation that allows us to help you be more efficient & profitable. As always, I appreciate the opportunity to share some insight into our business with you, and I hope that I have been able to clarify some of the changes and challenges we face. I also want to wish you a bountiful and safe fall harvest, and extend a heartfelt “Thank You” for your business.

Ron somewhat reluctantly agreed to have a feature article on him to highlight his career with Carrico Implement as he approaches his 80th birthday this fall. It all began 53 years ago when Ron and Joan made the decision to leave Ron’s job at Boeing in Wichita to go back to Beloit to join Joan’s parents, Paul & Helen Carrico, in the family dealership. Ron and Joan were pleased about returning to their roots in the rural area to raise a family. Ron recalls that the Ford tractor line was added to the existing Minneapolis Moline line when he & Joan returned in 1963. He started out by working in parts for his first six months with the dealership, then moved to the shop as a mechanic. Ron and his family have special memories from the many summer evenings spent out in the country on service calls when his children were young. During this time a significant decision was made to add the Versatile 4WD tractor line which changed the landscape of the region once customers realized the amount of time and manpower that could be saved by operating these machines. The progressive farming practices in the area commanded that the dealership always stay on top of the latest advances.
‘13: Celebrating Joan’s 45th & Ron’s 50th year in the family business
Ron eventually shifted back to parts, which has always been his greatest passion in the dealership. Those of you who know Ron know that he has accumulated a vast amount of knowledge on anything to do with farm equipment, and it is nothing for him to rattle off specific Minneapolis Moline part numbers from 50 years ago. Ron became active in selling equipment, and then took over management of the operation when Paul retired in 1974. He has always been well-known for keeping abreast of the latest technological advances, and leading the way to becoming the 1st Ford dealer in the state of Kansas to become computerized in 1982.
Over the years Ron has served on many dealer councils including Ford, Versatile, OMC, Gehl, Krause and John Deere. He not only gained insights from his peers, but also shared many best practices which were implemented by other dealers. Ron placed the greatest value on insights and opinions he gained from customers. He heavily relied on customer feedback when making decisions which could have significant impact on our producers. This input has proved to be invaluable towards the long-term sustainability for Carrico’s which, when it was formed, was the smallest of 9 dealerships in Mitchell County, and is now the only full-line dealership remaining in the county. Ron’s passion for the business carried through to his offspring whose childhood memories revolved primarily around growing up in the business. Dan, Karen and Craig were all in college when John Deere asked the family if Carrico’s would take on the John Deere line. After careful consideration and customer input, that offer was accepted in March of 1986. Within a few years all three children were back in Beloit working at the dealership full-time, and Ron gradually turned over the management reigns to Karen. The Lincoln store was purchased in 1996, with the Hays acquisition to follow in 2002. By this time Ron was able to start to enjoy his semi-retirement and he and Joan were able to spend time at their Colorado cabin. Ron once again put his mechanical aptitude back to work in spending more time restoring his old cars. He has partially refurbished his ‘55 Chevy Belair & ‘55 Thunderbird and has completely restored his ‘66 Ford Mustang convertible and ‘63 Corvair Monza convertible. His current project is a ‘59 Ford Galaxie retractable hardtop. In his retirement Ron has also followed Kansas basketball and regularly attended K-State football games, and has enjoyed countless trips following his grandchildren around the state for sporting events. He can often be found on his mower during the summer either at his home or at the football field at St. John’s High School. He is looking forward to the next stage of his life, which includes being a great-grandpa with the recent birth of Ava Grace. When asked to sum it all up, he stated “the greatest memories are the friendships of employees and customers formed over the years, and the pride that the philosophy of always putting the customers’ needs first still carries on within dealership.” He still stops in the store on most days when he is in town and is able to witness this ongoing, lasting legacy.
