About photovoice: Picture Dis(ability) photovoice: Picture Dis(Ability) is an art project conceived by Carrie Chui. Carrie is a student artist from Chicago who seeks to promote disability justice in her local community. photovoice: Picture Dis(Ability) uses the concept of photovoice, a participatory creative tool that empowers underrepresented groups in the community to become the actual instigators of change. Photovoice puts cameras in the hands of individuals and asks them to be the tellers of their own stories, crafters of their own art, discussers of their own experiences, producing statements made up of their own pictures and words that communicate their own experience.
Acknowledgements A heartfelt thank you to our fearless participants, Shirley and Phuc, and QuestBridge for making this possible.
Shirley A. Shirley was diagnosed with autism when she was a child at the age of 5. Now, over twenty years later, she is still learning to cope with the challenges of the condition. In her day-to-day life, Shirley enjoys walking around the park and tending her garden. Her favorite season is the summer, when her green beans and squash are most bountiful.
“This is home. I like being around plants and trees. Shirley A.
Phuc L. Phuc was born with a developmental disability, a condition that affects his speech and his movement. Due to language barriers and his disability, he does not work. Instead, during the day, he helps his family around the house. Additionally, Phuc goes to temple every weekend. There, he learns the principles and values of Buddhism. Although his disability is sometimes challenging to live with, he tells me, “Sometimes I get upset, but most of the time my disability does not take my happiness away.
