Beer Belly, a 1,200 sf restaurant & bar in Long Beach is the 2nd installment; its flagship located in Koreatown. Good rapport with the returning client enabled a flexible, unique design with a higher budget; both of which were crucial to this project’s ongoing success.

Completed in Nov. 2016, the space plays on the exposed roof framing & features faceted metal panels, giving it an industrial quality that references a ship’s hull aesthetic within the maritime context of the city of Long Beach.

Millwork & attachment detailing were both large parts of this project. The wall cladding & faceted bar areas needed to be specific depths to allow for bottles and glass storage while keeping with the overal faceted design. Below the bar itself, the facets needed to account for proper knee & toe clearances as well as notch in for ADA compliant clearances. Specific lighting heights were indicated for the cluster of glass pendant lights, giving depth to the dining & entry experience.

Located just north of Downtown LA, this 30,000 sf. tenant improvement consists of creative office, digital production, model making & 3D vis. spaces. Phase 1 of 2 complete, the scope of work is estimated at approx. $1.5 mil. The red undulating tunnel, to be digitally fabricated & machined, will serve as an entry condition, built in reception desk, a display wall for Thinkwell’s projects, a screening element to the open work space and a usable shelving system for the front offices.

Thinkwell had wonderfully clever names for each of their meeting rooms, which influenced the design and finishes. The conference room deemed “Tennis” had a sporty theme, and was clad in recycled Harlem Globetrotters gym flooring. Another, they called “Glass Corner.” This influenced the glass box design with sliding glass doors and floating lid appearance. The copy center & coffee bar mark the center of the open office with peaked walls & hot lava colored floor.

Phase 2, currently in the construction documentation phase, included a large scale amphitheater leading up to the mezzanine. The amphitheater seating had smaller areas carved out not only as a design element, but also to promote small group interaction. When larger scale lectures, presentations or other events were not happening, the amphitheater serves as smaller, casual places to work or meet.

Perched on top of the amphitheater was the “Press Box” meeting room, whose name influenced the design itself. The “Jewel” meeting room, would serve as 1/2 conference space and 1/2 presentation space, for Thinkwell to give private interactive visual presentations. When not being used as such, the hinged doors could and create a wide opening for the space to serve as a walk-in gallery. The upper level of Jewel for small working areas with built-in seating.

Carrie Baranowski

Marquez Terrace residence remodel located in the Pacific Pallisades, involved a third story addition as well as a pool addition. The client was looking for a distinctive style, which lead to a variety of midcentury modern roof studies, paralleled with a lower architectural projection above the garage and entryway. The enclosed entry stairs served as both a mini-mud room, and a grand entrance to the second story; as well as providing privacy for the 1st floor master suite.

In order to add as much square footage as we did, we opted for the 20% RFA bonus with the proportional stories option (see diagram below). The deck connects to the pool in the back yard via a small set of stairs, as shown in the elevation below. Personal involvement in this project included as-builts, schematic program massing & design, 3D modeling & rendering, and CADing & CD’s (SD + DD + CD).

Mandeville Canyon residence was a hillside renovation project involving reworking the outdated and confined interior rooms into more open, functional spaces. The client wanted to add a restroom downstairs, which involved flipping and redesigning the staircase to fit the new stylistic intent.

Specific emphasis was placed on reworking the kitchen and dining room, to completely open up those spaces and create a flow between them. The unusual barn shape of the existing house provided interesting optionsfor reworking the guest room, bedrooms and master suite. Personal involvement of the project included extensive as-builts of the entire property, CADing CDs, and 3D modeling. (SD + DD + CD).

D I A G R A M STRUCTURAL STRUC CTURAL SKIN SYSTEM

The studio under Scott Johnson and David Gerber proposed designing a tall building at least 50 floors tall. The site is directly behind the CBS building on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, CA. Instead of trying to inject open space into an increasingly urban area, I looked at how compartmentalized Hollywood is. A massive hybrid tower with extensive public program compartments fits with Hollywood’s potential for future density. The program for this tower is split between office and residential & hotel, which occupy the larger tower for deeper radial units. STUDENT WORK

SKYSCRAPER STUDIO

Public spaces are inserted between each main program including a concert hall as a central focal point where the towers collide. The structure is a double layered structural skin with two diagrids morphing separately. This allows for a conversation between the two structures creating a dynamic yet column free flexible space.

The skin system morphs to accommodate the differing solar orientations. Known as the Topological Tower, this project served as an analysis of how certain spacial properties are preserved under deformation. In this sense, a performative skin system is developed with a uniform geometry. The acrylic model is a diagram of the two diagrids in conversation. The blue, holding the elevator core and circulation program. 3D printing was also a big part of examining the structure of the building overall, before designing the skin system.
