Use your computer to help repair an old quilt with a worn patch. Put the worn part of the quilt on the flatbed of a scanner (you may have to remove the scanner cover). Print it on paper. Then add a border as a seam allowance by hand. Use the picture as a pattern and cut the fabric patch.

State Flower: Goldenrod State Bird: Meadowlark If the liquid in a snowdome gets cloudy or has partially evaporated, it is very difficult to replace it. Snowdomes with black plastic bases or brown pottery bases made in the 1930s and 1940s can be opened and repaired. The dome is held in place by plaster of paris, which can be carefully chipped away Domes with new shiny black plastic bases, black pottery bases (1940s), or cobalt blue bases (1920s) cannot be opened unless they are some of the few screw-type examples.

Some collectors want tools in restored condition. Others think restoring lowers the value. To restore old tools, wash wood with Murphy’s Oil Soap, dry, sand with steel wool, apply two coats of Minwax or other oil, then use paste wax and buff. Clean metal parts, then coat with clear lacquer.

When you quit smoking, keep your tobacciana collectibles. Tobacco stands without the top parts are good plant stands. Cigarette cases are popular as small purses that will hold a credit card, driver’s license and a little money. Tobacco tins and boxes are interesting storage containers, and the paper labels and cigar bands work well for decoupage projects. Best of all, ashtrays can be used to hold short-stemmed flowers or kept in the bedroom to old earrings and rings overnight.

When cleaning old hairbrushes baked with celluloid, do not plunge the brushes in a sink full of water. If water collects between the brush and the plastic, it will cause damage. (Never keep in direct sunlight. Celluloid, or cellulose nitrate, is flammable.) Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wash ivory. The yellow color is preferred and white ivory has a much lower value. If you have a friend whose hands perspire profusely, have that person handle the ivory, as it will add to the patina and coloring.
