“Space and place are basic components of the lived world; we take them for granted. When we think about them, however, they may assume unexpected meanings and raise questions we have not thought to ask.

Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience by Yu-Fu Tuan

BIO 4

CARRIE LIN

For those who have known me, they were surprised by my career change. For those who have been close to me, my decision to become an interior designer was no surprise at all. The courage to give up what was secure and familiar, however, came as a surprise to us all, especially me. This courage has lead me to discover the thrill of creating, the agony of producing, and the joy of designing. Likewise, I believe this same courage will continue to take me deeper into the world of design, and into the rest of my career.

Epoch Community Center is an adaptive reuse project that aims to revitalize one of Chicago’s most historic industrial districts located in East Pilsen. Breaking the common practice of single-use building types, Epoch is a mixed-use facility that contains commercial, recreational, and educational spaces to cater the needs of its diverse local community. In bringing these different elements into a centralized location, Epoch aims to provide its community members and visitors a new and vibrant Chicago destination.

PENUMBER 14

PENUMBRA

EXECUTIVE RETREAT RESORT

Penumbra is a conceptual project done in a collaborative team of five members. We used penumbra, the lightest part of the shadow, as a metaphor to highlight the developing trends in workplace environments and its potential effects in the hospitality industry. Using light and shadow to highlight the work cycle of a given day, the concept was then translated into programmatic organization and built form.

Our concept for Penumbra was to reimagine the resort experience for an exclusive global demographic in the 21st century. It was conceptualized as a getaway destination for companies and its executive team to meet and collaborate with its global partners. Consequently, our team examined how the incorporation of digital technology affected the spaces and activities of different amenities offered at the resort.

The current school typology remains stagnant in the face of limited public resources, changing educational programs, and neighborhood demographic shifts. An interior design that is informed by “joint use” addresses these problems through common-goal partnerships between the public and private sectors. This results in a facility that enhances the student learning experience while engaging the greater surrounding community.

Joint use strategies respond to current building facility issues by expanding the use of school spaces to its networks of partners and its community members. In doing so, schools can utilize its spaces that are often left empty after school hours, private partners can provide services to developing neighborhoods, and community members can have access to resources that were once unavilable. Through this private-public partnership structure, not only can the facility be utilized to meet both the needs of the school and its partner, it could also revitalize its neighborhood community.

When designing a joint use facility, the occupancy of all spaces is strategically considered within the design. Spaces that are not utilized by students are being occupied by partners throughout the day, and open to the community after school hours. The atrium has several gathering spaces that can host both formal lectures and informal group discussions. After meetings, staff members can easily return to the on site garden and cafĂŠ from the second level walkway.

Space for a New Age of Learning To support a dynamic educational setting, the open space strategy is utilized to provide teachers a flexible classroom to teach in. Using the joint use approach to look at unutilized spaces, the original oversized corridor has been turned into an active learning area as part of the open space learning environment. The original classrooms are then downsized in square footage. However, each classroom is incorporated into the open space plan and can expand its size through the use of adjustable stacked door panels.

Sketch: Design ideation process

DIFFA 29

For DIFFA’s 2013 Dining by Design fundraiser, Harrington College of Design selected five student representatives - three undergraduate and two graduate students - to participate in the event. With only a month and a half to design, plan, and build, our team had to think fast and be proactive about each design idea and decision. We all agreed that the message of sustainability was an appropriate supplication to the cause of the event - to bring out beauty in things that are often rejected and discarded. As a team, we gathered materials from donors, recycled fabric samples, and reused any materials we could use from previous projects. The result was a 10’ x 10’ dining installation that created an atmosphere of leisure and relaxation for diners to enjoy an evening of great food and company.

The goal of the design was to allow the furniture piece “to grow as the child grew. Thus, a module approach was used for this design. The base frame has two height settings. The first setting is for when the child is an infant. It can then be lowered when the child starts crawling and standing. When the child becomes a toddler, the sides can be removed. Once the child is too big to sleep in the crib, the crib can then be turned into a desk, bench or loveseat.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY “Building is a complex activity. It makes people aware and take heed at different levels: at the level of having to make pragmatic decisions; of envisioning architectural spaces in the mind and on paper; and of committing one’s whole being, mind and body, to the creation of a material form that captures an ideal. Once achieved, architectural form is an environment for man.”
