The Escapist

the

escapist

Going off-grid can seem daunting to some, but not you. You can think of nothing better than taking time out, and completely letting go – for a little while at least. A far-flung destination that couldn’t be further from the daily grind, it’s time to take some R&R that’s entirely your own. Find your escape, you deserve it.

The Escapist

Tropical healing

Serenity seekers on the hunt for some well-earned downtime need look no further than A-listers’ favourite, COMO Parrot Cay in Turks & Caicos. The epitome of private island escapism, this minimalist, back-to-nature utopia is home to acres of unspoilt mangroves, a mile long beach and the renowned COMO Shambhala Retreat.

Island living at its best

Arrive by helicopter to the paradisiacal private island of Six Senses Zil Pasyon. Head straight to the spa, built around boulder granite rocks, for some well deserved R&R, or trek through native jungle to ascend nearby Top Hill where you can warm by the bonfire and soak up the views of a superlative Seychelles sunset.

A model of sustainability

The brainchild of Hollywood hero, Marlon Brando, this private French Polynesian atoll is the embodiment of far-flung luxe. Aptly named The Brando, this eco-conscious property strives to preserve its picturesque surroundings, with guests encouraged to delve deeper into the effects of their environmental ethos and get involved in the research, discovery and exploration of the atoll.

We often forget that not taking a risk in life is perhaps the greatest risk of all. This is a journey into the unknown, a journey into both a physical landscape and the landscape of your mind. Intricately choreographed to deliver profound and lasting change, this journey is about finding your bearings in every sense. You are the adventure.

Inside the box are a set of instructions and all the essentials you need to survive. Over the course of the next week, you will be asked simply to complete the journey, with your guide helping at various points along the way. This is no common journey. Travel with a purpose

Travelling more meaningfully and offering access to behind the scenes conservation and community projects is at the heart of eight life-changing itineraries by Wilderness Safaris. Whether you choose to track critically endangered black rhinos in Namibia, help to habituate chimpanzees in Rwanda, volunteer at a children’s camp in rural Africa or observe the darting and collaring of lions in Zambia, you’ll gain unprecedented insight into conserving and restoring Africa’s wilderness and wildlife. What’s more, the camps are luxurious but also designed to have minimal impact on the environment.

Different by design

Relatively remote in unspoilt natural surroundings, Sweden’s Treehotel features seven distinctly designed treehouses including a UFO, bird’s nest and Mirrorcube, all innovatively designed and built using non-intrusive methods. Utilising sustainable practices and doing as much as possible on nature’s terms, each room contains water efficient sinks, local supplied hydroelectric power and eco wooden floors. Those serious about having minimal impact on the environment can get involved in activities that only need the power of nature such as snowshoe walks, dogsledding and cultural encounters.

You will be guided around some of the island’s lesser-known parts, where you can spot leopards in their natural habitat, watch wild elephants swimming, and go whale watching in a stunning aerial safari. This trip will take in four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Float above the Sigiriya Rock Fortress in a hot air balloon; see the world’s oldest living human-planted tree in Anuradhapura; then head into the forest with the chief of the Veddas, Sri Lanka’s indigenous people. Experts will give you an in-depth insight into the country, such as the marine biologist who will meet you before you track blue whales, and an archaeologist who will guide you through Sigiriya. You can even opt to be introduced to one of the country’s famous cricketers. Alongside all of this adventure and culture there is plenty of time to relax, enjoying carefully chosen luxurious eco lodges along the way. Also includes: Return flights, 1 night at Paradise Road Tintagel, 1 night at Wilpattu Camp, 4 nights at Jetwing Vil Uyana, 2 nights at Gal Oya Lodge, 2 nights at Ceylon Tea Trails and 2 nights at Amangalla.
