Going for Gold

Whistler’s epic wilderness is a global stage for winter sports tournaments and a world-renowned training ground for future champions. Hit the slopes, explore the extensive backcountry or ride a halfpipe on a fun-filled day with an Olympic skier or snowboarder. Take your ability to the next level following in their tracks and learning from their technique. Celebrate over après-ski and listen to the best competition stories from their fascinating career.

Head off-piste and try something a little different. With lots of unusual and exciting things happening on, or near the slopes, our favourite ski resorts have quite the interesting winter in store for guests.

Music in the Mountains Swap your snow boots for dancing shoes and follow music from the slopes to the stages with five days of acoustic re-inventions from world-renowned artists at Zermatt Unplugged. Held in April, this unique festival has become essential to the European music scene since 2007, with over 80 concerts and after-show parties across 14 stages spread throughout the village, surrounded by dazzling springtime snow.

A number of legendary musicians have performed here, including the likes of James Morrison, Lionel Richie, Jake Bugg and Ronnie Scott’s All Stars jazz band. To add to the festival feel, local gastronomy delights can be savoured in the Taste Village. Festival passes are available early December, early booking is recommended.

Salutation on the Slopes

Chair, Mountain and Tree Pose; these familiar transformative techniques used by yogi’s are being transferred to the pistes. Meaning ‘union’ in Sanskrit, yoga complements skiing in more ways than one; bringing a sense of calm and rhythm, improving strength and flexibility and aiding breathing in the high altitude mountain air. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced skier, incorporating yoga before and after hitting the mountain gives the body an opportunity to strengthen and awaken muscles in the morning and stretch out those tight hamstrings in the evening. The uber-chic swiss alpine enclave, W Verbier encourages skiers to slip into deep stretches and relaxation through its Warm Up Yoga and After Ski Yoga classes in the double heighted, glassfronted studio overlooking the snow-covered village.

Whether you are a first time skier or snowboarder, or a seasoned rider ready to make the transition from piste to powder skiing, our specialists can offer advice on the best resorts to match your ability.

A Whole New World

Choosing the right ski resort for your first time on the slopes is one of the most important decisions to make, and one that can make or break the experience. A must for any beginner are dedicated nursery slopes with excellent ski schools for developing techniques and building confidence before venturing onto the well-groomed blue and red runs. Other ingredients

14

to consider are off-piste activities for non-skiing days and a cheerful après-ski scene. Courchevel Moriond is a beginners dream; the gentle slope of the fun enclosed beginner area is perfect for those first days on the slopes, accessed by a complimentary beginner lift. With an enviable ski-in, skiout location at the foot of a green slope and ski school right on the doorstep, the impressive Portetta Hotel

and Lofts hosts the perfect spot for alfresco après-ski in the piste-side Fire & Ice Bar while The Herb House Spa soothes tired limbs. Cervinia is one of Italy’s hottest ski resorts, and the perfect resort for beginners with the majority of the ski area dedicated to blue and red wide open runs. The nursery slopes at village level and magic carpet lifts are great for those looking

to gain confidence before progressing upwards on the mountain and for spectacular views of the Matterhorn. Stay at the family-run Hermitage Hotel & Spa, this Relais & Châteaux property offers authentic alpine charm. Further suggestions include: Lech, Austria | Cortina d' Ampezzo, Italy | Saas-Fee and Villars, Switzerland

Intermediate Terrains Cruising blues and a wide variety of more challenging red runs are the intermediate skiers' idyll. Combine these with a seamless lift system and groups of mixed abilities can ski at their level and still meet on the mountain for lunch. Perfect European resorts are Courchevel, San Cassiano and Arosa with Whistler and Vail on the North America continent.

High and Mighty

Challenging black runs, exhilarating off-piste terrain, heli-skiing, spending the day with a guide searching for untouched powder with the chance to create virgin tracks; these are the preserve of the advanced skier. Those looking for a fresh challenge should try St. Anton in Austria, Verbier in Switzerland or Val d’Isère in France; alternatively further afield is the remote and rugged Jackson Hole in Wyoming.

Altapura in Val Thorens offers direct access to the vast Three Valleys. Hotel Goldener Berg commands a prime location, close to the ski school meeting point in Oberlech, Austria. Fairmont Chateau Whistler and The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch, Beaver Creek rank high in North America for unforgettable ski-in, ski-out experiences.

Slumber to Slopes

It’s all about the location at these properties. There is nothing more convenient than clipping on your skis and heading straight to the pistes from your doorstep with the added pleasure of skiing back to your door at the end of a long exhilarating day. Be first on the slopes with the jetset crowd at L’Apogée in Courchevel 1850 whilst

Feel the adrenalin start pumping and toes starting to tingle as the helicopter rotors begin to spin. Fly over the pristine wilderness of the Rockies or Alps to a remote mountain backcountry where it’s all downhill through a terrain of off-piste, fresh champagne powder. Heliskiing is one bucket list experience for any keen skier or snowboarder.
