Write way to the top Lauren Tyrrell was the shy girl in high school who loved to write. At Marywood, that love of writing turned into an interest in journalism. She became a reporter for The Wood Word, the monthly student newspaper. Then section editor. Then assistant editor. Ultimately, editor-in-chief. The reason? Faculty who cared. Faculty who knew her, and who pushed her to go further than she thought she could—as a writer and as a leader.
“If someone had said I would become editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, I would have balked. But here I am. Instead of being a face in the crowd at a large university, I’m known as ‘Lauren, who is a really good writer.’ It’s phenomenal.”
Lauren Tyrrell ’09, English Scranton, Pennsylvania

Searching for meaning in leading Dr. Uldarico Rex Dumdum’s philosophy on developing student leadership comes partly from President James Monroe. It goes like this: The question we should ask at the end of an education is not, ‘What has the student learned?’ but ‘What has the student become?’ Dr. Dumdum wants his students to become something more. It’s why he asks them to dig more deeply into concepts of business, leadership, and self-discovery than they probably ever have before.
“I help students become reflective practitioners, to recognize romanticized leadership that deceives followers with the promise of easy solutions. Instead, students change hearts and mindsets— including their own. It’s a more challenging kind of leadership that makes lasting change.”
Uldarico Rex Dumdum, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Business and Managerial Science Department

A place for leaders with wings As a former Eagle Scout, Michael Jozaitis has drive. But having ambition doesn’t mean he’s always had everything figured out. He needed a college with the right blend of opportunities and support. He found it at Marywood, with what he calls its “cool mix of people who are intelligent but relaxed at the same time.” As a sophomore marketing major in a work-study program, Michael took an initiative that led him to career insights and confidence.
“I walked into the Marywood marketing director’s office one day and said, ‘Hi, I’m doing work-study here. I’m bored clipping papers. What else can I do? That began a pivotal mentoring relationship. I got to know someone who was in the field where I wanted to be.”

She worked for The Magic Kingdom for several years, teaching 2D animation to theme park guests before launching her own online company, www.dallasshaw.com. As artist, owner, publicist, and bookkeeper, Dallas has gained a new appreciation for the term “the business of art.” “Being an artist turns out to be a small fraction of my job.
