Friend of Extension Winners

Agriculture is at the root of our existence, and because of that, we are especially honored to be the recipient of the 2024 Friend of Extension Award from the UGA Extension Office of Carroll County! Together, we’ll continue to support our rural communities.

Load Shed and Rolling Power Outages

What Is Load Shed?

Load shed is a last resort way to balance the demand and supply of electricity through controlled, temporary service interruption. Carroll EMC and its generation and transmission partners closely to monitor weather forecasts and prepare for projected conditions. EMCs maintain a diverse portfolio of electric generation resources and safeguards that are designed to provide reliable electric service.

Why Load Shed?

Load shed occurs when the electric grid is not able to meet energy demands during extreme hot or cold weather events. If extreme temperatures are forecast that are expected to trigger an unusually high demand for electricity, Carroll EMC may call for Members to help conserve electricity, especially during peak hours. If it becomes necessary, the cooperative will notify Members through social media, its website and other avenues. Members voluntarily reducing their electricity use will help decrease the need for rolling power outages.

What Are Rolling Power Outages?

A rolling power outage is a temporary, planned power outage that is necessary at certain times to ensure the stability of the electric grid and prevent a widespread or long-lasting power outage. During a rolling power outage, power will be turned off temporarily in areas for a limited time, and then turned on again as another area is turned off.

How Can You Conserve Energy?

• Turn off and unplug unnecessary electronics, appliances and lights.

• Avoid using large appliances like the oven and delay washing dishes or clothes.

• Close curtains and blinds, and raise the thermostat as high as possible.

• Caulk, weatherstrip or place a towel under drafty windows, doors and gaps.

*If someone in your household is elderly, needs electronic medical equipment or has other critical electric needs, be sure you have an alternate power supply and plan in place for potential power outages.

PaySite Kiosks

The PaySite kiosk location at the Super Foods in Temple is no longer available. A new kiosk location in the area is being chosen, and we’ll include an update when it has been selected.

TIPS FOR INTEGRATING SMART HOME TECH

1. Define goals. Determine the areas in your home you want to make smart like lighting, security and entertainment systems.

2. Choose compatible devices. A smart hub can make integration easier with a central device to control multiple smart technologies.

If you’re new to smart home technologies, keep the following tips in mind as you explore home automation options:

3. Check Wi-Fi strength. Smart home technologies require a stable internet connection to function properly, so consider factors like router placement and signal strength.

4. Prioritize security. Set strong, unique passwords for your Wi-Fi network, set devices to update automatically and limit personal data collection.

Technology at Work for You

Carroll EMC and SyncGlobal Better Together

Carroll EMC and SyncGlobal are dedicated to delivering Crossbeam high-speed internet to our Members and community

The fiber network SyncGlobal is building helps improve efficiencies throughout the cooperative. Employing the vastly improved bandwidth and speed offered by the fiber network, Carroll EMC substations are being equipped with video surveillance, enhanced network availability and the necessary equipment for monitoring critical infrastructure. Fiber is also being deployed to critically placed smart grid devices. By increasing the speed of the self-healing network, Carroll EMC has been able to reduce the impact of outages by 40%, which means improved service to members with fewer interruptions of service.

Creating a Connected Future

Looking forward, the new fiber network will be used to help run the next generation of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), aiding Carroll EMC with energy consumption and efficiency planning, while providing the cooperative with clearer use information to share with Members.

We Value Your Support

We humbly thank Carroll EMC Members who have elected to subscribe to Crossbeam services. Your support has a profound impact on these efforts and contributes to the strength and resilience of our entire community.

There is never a good time for the power to go out, but if it happens on a sunny day, you might be left wondering why. Here are the most common causes of a power outage :

High winds, snow and ice can cause tree limbs to fall on power lines. Other weather effects like wildfires and lightning strikes can cause major damage to equipment

Squirrels, birds, snakes and other animals can inadver tently contact power lines, causing shor t circuits and disruptions to electrical supply.

Close the Blinds

On Hot Summer Days

If you want to keep the hot summer heat out of your air-conditioned home, keep the sunlight out. Close your blinds and shades, and your home will feel cooler and more comfortable. Any heat that comes in with the sunshine will compete with the cool air your central air-conditioning system is pumping out, making your rooms feel hotter and tempting you to lower the thermostat.

Closing curtains and other window coverings during daylight hours will help save your A/C from having to work so hard, which could make it operate more efficiently and even extend its life.

Scheduled

Occasionally, we plan outages to perform upgrades or repairs to par ts of the local grid.

Vehicles can crash into utility poles, bringing down power lines Construction and excavation work can also result in disruptions to underground lines

ENERGY EFFICIENCY TIP OF THE MONTH

Electricity used to operate major appliances accounts for a significant portion of your home energy use. Here’s an easy way to lighten the load on your clothes dryer. Before you dry a load of damp clothing, toss in a clean, dry towel. The towel will absorb excess water, shortening the drying time. If your dryer does not include an autosense feature, reduce the timer to about half of what you normally would. Remove the towel about 15 minutes after the cycle begins. Shorter drying times will extend the life of your dryer and save energy.
