The past two years have brought many challenges, but maybe the most unexpectedly uplifting one is that all the time spent in our own company has prompted each of us to reassess just about everything we see, touch, want and wear. It’s as if each of us had sent the movie or our life to an award-winning film editor and the resulting reel is a much clearer picture of who we are, and how best to present ourselves to this radically altered world.

Our newfound clarity has sometimes felt surprising, even confusing at times, but ultimately, it has been both liberating and gratifying. We have purged our closets, found new jobs, initiated new hobbies, changed hairstyles, addresses, passwords, diets, even embarked on fulfilling new dreams. And unlike most New Year’s resolutions, we’ve no desire to discard this fresh awareness of our personas and self-image. I AM: CHIC CLASSIC ELEGANT

You hesitated because being in the country is so darn calming and blissful, but your life wasn’t meant to be lived in second gear. And not only is it delicious to be back in town again, but what’s even better is that the frantic pace has subsided, taking with it that exhausting pressure you used to have to be in five places at once. City girl that you are, you’ve always gravitated towards smart tailoring, but because you can’t forget all those months at home clad only in oh-so-comfy sweats, your suits now are softer, roomier. Favored dresses now graze instead of cinch. And though you would never pack a weekend suitcase without folding in a Little Black Dress, your new favorite version has sleek racing stripes down the sides. In fact, regardless of where you are headed, you can zip up that suitcase in less than an hour because you’ve curated a wardrobe that is harmonious, chosen for maximum polish rather than flash, understatement with a dash of surprise. You’d never say it out loud because you don’t want anyone to take it the wrong way, but you think the extended time out we collectively endured wasn’t such a bad thing. Of course, your heart goes out to anyone who fell ill, but now that we are where we are, it’s obvious that folks are more grateful, appreciative, and conscious of all they have. How glorious is it to see as many people running and strolling through the park, and restaurants once again filled with diners enjoying each other's company, as much as their meals. You’re elated that the time apart reminded us how wonderful it is to have good friends, to embrace loved ones again, to take the time to look at the wonders around you, regardless of whether you’re abroad or down the block, and to always venture outside dressed as if you just might encounter something, or someone who, may suddenly change your life.

Since you believe in love at first sight (after all, who doesn’t?), you’re unapologetically drawn to clothes that will flow, waft and rustle should you get swept off your feet. That doesn’t mean dresses stolen from the cover of a Harlequin Romance novel. It’s more like having Keira Knightley’s role in a sequel of Love, Actually (unquestionably, your must-watch Christmas movie). You are that person who can’t wait to dance when no one is looking. Heading to a busy city for a vacation is inconceivable when miles of sun-drenched beaches are beckoning. Just say the word, and you are ready to go since all your favorite clothes can be rolled up into your shoulder bag faster than a short order cook can make avocado toast.

But just because you want every minute of your life to be filled with surprise, doesn’t mean you’re frivolous or have your head turned by the next shiny object. Maintaining balance and goodnaturedness requires dedication to making smart, careful choices. So, you’ve chosen a profession as fulfilling as it is lucrative, friends who cheer and support you, a closet filled with clothes that enhance but never upstage and whose lack of construction believe the fact that they’re cleverly designed to flatter you from every angle. Reading affords you insight. Travel arouses the senses with new approaches to food, dress, expression, and gratitude. It’s as if you see the world as one big continuing education program and you’re determined to take as many classes as you can. Because for forty years his brand has cannily and consistently shifted and morphed to accommodate the spirit of an ever-rapidly changing culture, he is that rare designer immediately, recognizable just by saying his first name. Unlike most people, TOMMY (Hilfiger) loves change. Well, the last two years has instigated a seismic reassessment of every aspect of our lives, and it has been a challenge for every business, every ambition, every individual. Not surprisingly, Hilfiger has not only embraced the challenge, but he's coming out of it smiling. Maybe that's because his collection has never looked better.

HR: After all we have collectively gone through, do you detect a different attitude towards getting dressed?

TH: For the last two years, the consumer has been focused on the most casual and most comfortable clothes. Nothing fancy, nothing dressy. But during fall of last year, the mood began changing. People started to desire clothes to wear ‘out’ again; slightly more expensive, definitely more body conscious. The result is women are looking sexier, men are more eager to find a great jacket to go with their favorite jeans, or even a new pair with a slimmer fit. The energy slowed a bit because of Omicron over the holidays, but the fall gave us the impetus to go forward. So, we are elevating everything, better quality, more expensive pieces but chicer, more tonal dressing. It’s clothing that’s more sophisticated but without forgetting comfort.

HR: Also, I noticed more variation in and play on texture.

TH: We’re injecting a lot more color, because during the time we spent at home, wardrobes became more muted than I wanted them to be.

HR: Do you think there is less inspiration coming from red carpet clothes?

TH: People may not be paying as much attention since the glamour of the red carpet is still compromised, but I still think people are going to pull out all of the stops. Folks have been cooped up, not able to enjoy themselves, and now they want to make up for lost time, especially young people. Women want something with some shine, some sparkle, beading, crystals, and fringe. Something fancier. Men are becoming more attuned to quality and eager for something more tailored than what they were relegated to wear during lockup. The red carpet is still fun. Who doesn’t love a parade? But people are realizing they don’t have to spend a fortune at Dior to look great.

HR: Who is today’s Tommy customer?

TH: We are more international than ever before. Deep into Asia, India, Brazil. The business has expanded globally because our e-commerce ships everywhere, and during the pandemic people were shopping online more than we ever anticipated from all different corners of the world.

HR: Don’t you think that will continue, especially since there is a notable increase in older customers, who used to have more resistance, using the internet?

TH: No more. The major players like Amazon and Farfetch put everything you want or need within reach, so they have been instrumental in making shopping online a natural occurrence for everyone.

HR: Do you think that online shopping has made people braver in terms of style?

TH: Yes, because anything is possible and accessible, and you can try it on in the privacy of your home, and if you don’t like it, it’s so easy to give it back in a self-addressed box with a sticker. Nothing to it.

HR: You should know that when your clothes came in for the shoot, it wasn’t just the young members of our crew who were excited about the clothes. There was an age differential of about 40 years, and yet everyone on set liked and wanted them.

TH: It’s been a conscious effort to become broader without abandoning youth. It’s a fine line that we’ve so far been able to walk because jeans and sports inspired sportswear have become ubiquitous.

HR: Fast fashion isn’t going away, but do you think the trend is away from disposable clothing?

TH: Absolutely, both because of the growing importance of sustainability but also because if you buy something great you want to keep it and wear it over and over. People have felt that way about fine jewelry for a long time, because it comes with the promise of permanence but now, I think it has moved into other categories as well. Many people discarded their accessories during the pandemic. Should they take them out of storage? For women, handbags are still the most important accessory, with shoes right behind. Men are obsessed with watches. But both are buying hats, belts, sunglasses.

HR: And fine jewelry?

TH: Jewelry is super important and should be a hot item right now for anyone who likes fashion. But whether people buy it for themselves, or get it as gifts, they want pieces that feel meaningful.

HR: How has being able to shop for everything online changed the way people dress?

RM: Being online gives customers more access to styles or trends that they may not have tried, because in the store you just see items on a hanger, while online you can visualize items on people with all different shapes and sizes.

HR: So, is there still any advantage to shopping in store?

RM: Feeling a garment’s fabrication or an accessory’s construction are some of the biggest advantages!

It’s very hard to tell the quality of a garment or product online, even with a detailed description.

HR: Where do you look for inspiration? What is your favorite element of the design process?

RM: Before the pandemic, I used to love to travel but during the last two years, I’ve had to do a lot of living vicariously online. But I am blessed because there are also so many inspiring women who surround me, that I take inspiration from daily.

HR: What advice would you give someone who is trying to find their individual look?

RM: I would tell them to try a few different styles, including ones that are out of the box for them. Just go for it! Experience the way different items fit. Then you can see more of what works and what doesn't work and start to branch out.

HR: What kind of silhouettes do you always trust?

RM: A great cropped leather jacket, a pair of straight leg jeans, and some killer boots.

HR: When you travel, what can’t you be without?

RM: I never leave home without my Janine sweater!

HR: How essential are accessories in building a wardrobe you can enjoy?

RM: Accessories add that extra special touch to an outfit. And having versatile accessories are invaluable when building a diverse, adaptable wardrobe.
