welcome from the dean
Dear Friends of the Arts,
Each summer, our Visual and Performing Arts team prepares the season brochure. The summer is a time for us to look back on the year that ended, as we try to make continued improvements. But it’s also a time to look ahead to the upcoming season, and all of the events that we will get to share with Carthage and our community!
The 2023 – 2024 season celebrates the past, the present, and the future. This special season marks the 150th anniversary of the Carthage Band Program. It also celebrates our award-winning Carthage Theatre program and the exciting new works that we commission. It’s the inaugural year of our new Photography major, and the season includes special exhibitions for our photography students. We’ve included special features on each of these programs!
The annual Carthage Christmas Festival is a highlight of the Carthage community, bringing together all of our musical ensembles to celebrate the season. This year, patrons will also be able to experience exquisite pieces from Carthage’s Sam and Berry Shoen Art Collection, which will be exhibited simultaneously in the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art. You won’t want to miss this!
Carthage’s award-winning theatre program continues to focus on new and contemporary works. Our 15th new play commission, THE GENDERLESS PLAY EXPERIMENT, celebrates queer joy and the human journey of self-discovery. The theatre department will also produce Eric Overmyer’s play ON THE VERGE is a witty exploration of human “frontiers.” These are just two of the works in our Wartburg Theatre this season – we promise you’ll find it all compelling!
This year, our Performing Arts Season enters its 27th year of bringing international guest artists to campus and into the community schools. We’re celebrating by joining our Carthage music ensembles in concerts with world-class guests Stile Antico, Gaudete Brass, and the Kaia Quartet. You’ll be amazed at all of our guest artists for the series.
We look forward to welcoming you to Carthage for our 2023 – 2024 season. Whether you’re new to Carthage, or a long-time friend of the arts, we know your experience with Carthage Arts will be world class. Join us for one of our cherished traditions or a new exhibition or play –I promise, the artistry will not disappoint!

Along the way they meet strange and wondrous characters, learn slang, experience artifacts from the future, and debate the appropriateness of a lady wearing pants.

When a young woman from a local homeless shelter goes missing, tensions rise between those who knew her and other members of the nearby community. The search for Mandy draws attention to the prejudices that shape the lives of the homeless population. Told through the lens of an investigation and personal interviews, the story unfolds as we are brought into the world of this diverse cast of characters. Character interviews are interspersed with scenes of their interactions, as well as brief glimpses of Mandy, who narrates her own perspective with verses from poems. As the two opposing groups clash and struggle to find common ground, we’re all left with one final question: What happened to Mandy?

carthage theatre honored
Long known for its artistry, Carthage Theatre is increasingly drawing notice for contributions that reverberate far beyond the stage. In the Kennedy Center’s 2023 American College Theater Festival, our program earned two significant national accolades for its original play “Memento Mori.”
Citizen Artist Award – For the third time in the award’s six-year history, Carthage was honored for employing theatre “to promote long-term societal impact through an artistic lens … and to advocate for justice.”
Facilitation of a Brave Rehearsal Space award celebrates faculty whose behind-the-scenes work “prioritizes the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of their student artists, empowering them to safely engage with challenging theatrical stories.”
“These particular awards show we’re doing work that matters,” says director Neil Scharnick, “and we’re doing it right.”
carthage adds playwriting major
Our highly successful New Play Initiative has spawned a new academic offering. The English and Theatre departments joined forces to introduce a playwriting major at Carthage beginning in fall 2023. Students can collaborate with accomplished professionals; our visiting playwrights have won Oscars, Emmys, Obies, Jeffs, and Golden Globes. And playwriting majors can create their own original works through the Verbatim Theatre Project, which since 2015 has given a voice to veterans, health care workers, homeless residents, and social justice advocates.
Watch for their work in future theatre seasons!

celebrating 150 years of band
A series of special events in 2023-24 will commemorate 150 years of musical excellence at Carthage.
According to news reports, students on the previous campus in Carthage, Illinois, formed a six-piece brass ensemble in fall 1873. Among the oldest college bands in the United States, it has grown significantly in both size and distinction over the ensuing century and a half. Today, band activities at Carthage comprise three ensembles: Wind Orchestra, Concert Band, and chamber winds group AMATI. Conducted by Professor James Ripley, the band maintains a rich touring tradition throughout the United States and Japan.
The yearlong celebration culminates in a 150th Anniversary Concert on May 11, 2024, featuring the premiere of “Fortitude” by prominent composer Timothy Mahr. Commissioned specifically for the occasion, the piece serves as a musical representation of 142 — the band room number in the Johnson Arts Center — while depicting the spirit, conviction, camaraderie, and joy that come from playing in a band.
Join us in marking this expansive legacy! All events are free and open to the public.
