"Life Cycle of A Star"

Page 1

Everywhere, in any time. Well, probably not everywhere. This play definitely takes place in America. Mostly in suburban America. And definitely not any time. A time when talking on the phone was still a thing. But think of this world as beyond time and space, a sort-of-modern Grover’s Corner. To borrow from Thornton Wilder’s prologue to Our Town, this play presents the life of a friendship “against the life of the stars.”

director’s notes

True – “forever friendships” are very rare, must be cherished and treated with vigilance, dignity and respect.

Playwright Ali Viterbi who wrote LIFE CYCLE OF A STAR for the Carthage Theatre New Play Initiative, describes this play as an exploration of friendship, and especially female friendship which is something she has wanted to explore for some time. She draws on life experiences in this fictional account, placing great value on how a forever friendship has enriched her life. In Ali’s synopsis of the play she asks “…can a childhood promise survive the forces of Time and Space?” In this play, LIFE CYCLE OF A STAR, she presents the friendship of Anna and Lily “against the life of the stars.”

As the director of LIFE CYCLE OF A STAR, I have faced many questions and challenges during the planning and rehearsal phases of this production. Together with the cast and production team we delved into the empirical

director’s notes

questions this play asks. What gives our life value? What is friendship? What makes a forever friendship? Within the finite experience of human existence how does “Time” fit into this equation? After seeing this production I invite you to share your thoughts and reactions with me at our Friday talkbacks, in the lobby after the show, or through email.

Arts at Carthage acknowledges that the land on which our building stands is part of the traditional Potawatomi, Sioux, Peoria, Kickapoo, and Miami peoples past, present, and future. These homelands reside along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes. We honor with gratitude the land itself, and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place—alive and strong, and this calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as well.
