The major emphasis at Carus continues to be the publication of works for choirs and vocal ensembles. Two important 300th anniversaries are already casting their shadows on the horizon: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was born on 8 March 1714 in Weimar and Gottfried August Homilius was born in Rosenthal on 2 February of the same year. Both composers shaped music decisively after 1750 and occupied key positions in Protestant church music for decades: C. P. E. Bach, Bach’s second eldest son, was Music Director of the main churches in Hamburg from 1767 until 1788, and Homilius was the Dresden Kreuzkantor from 1755 to 1785. In the coming year we will offer vocal scores and performance material for the new Complete Edition of the works of C. P. E. Bach.

The number of vocal works by the father, Johann Sebastian Bach, is continually being expanded. In the coming months we will be publishing several new editions of his cantatas, including such moving works as Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ BWV 177. Also, in an effort to reflect the most current state of musicological research we are replacing an older edition of Actus Tragicus (BWV 106) with a newer one. In order to enable smaller choirs to perform Dvořák’s Mass in D major in a colorfully orchestrated version, Joachim Linckelmann has made an arrangement for soli, choir and wind quintet. Linckelmann has already arranged a chamber version of the Brahms Requiem for Carus which has proven to be successful. Last but not least, we are continuing to expand our musicological complete editions. The Stuttgart Schütz Edition will see the publication of the Cantiones sacrae this year, while the Reger Edition follows with a volume of chorale preludes for organ. Finally, with the start of the first ever edition of the complete works of Giacomo Puccini we will be fulfilling a long cherished wish on the part musicians and scholars for reliable editions of the works of one of the most frequently performed Italian masters, a composer whose music is situated between the late romantic and modern eras. Instead of an opening chorus Cantata BWV 42 begins with a magnificent Sinfonia in the style of the Brandenburg Concertos. It is possible that Bach took this movement from a concerto which he had composed earlier. The first aria, for alto with obbligato oboe and bassoon, could be derived from the middle movement of this concerto. The heroic bass aria, a statement of the certainty of faith, forms a weighty counterpart to the opening movement. After breaking off the annual cantata cycle at the end of March 1725 Bach set a series of cantata texts by the Leipzig poet Christiana Mariana von Ziegler, who maintained one of the first literary-musical salons. The large scale chorale chorus ties this work to the chorale cantatas. The central bass aria “Auf, auf, mit hellem Schall” with solo trumpet is noteworthy since in place of a middle section in the aria, here Bach employs an accompagnato recitative.
The Cantata BWV 177 of 1732 is a setting of the first fives strophes of Johann Agricola’s chorale “Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.” The outer movements are based on this hymn and the cantata itself can be assigned to the so-called annual cycle of Bachs chorale cantatas.

The cantata Freue dich, erlöste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach’s last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John’s Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its extraordinary length (12 movements) made it possible for Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, together with instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra contribute to the generally festive character of this work. Among Johann Sebastian Bach’s largely unknown vocal works is a compilation of wedding chorales which have survived in an autograph set of parts from the 1730s. The chorales can still be performed today at weddings without any great difficulty. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach 300th Anniversary
C. P. E. Bach’s Oratorios and Cantatas now available at Carus In 2013, in anticipation of his 300th anniversary, vocal scores and performance material for four important vocal works by Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach are in preparation. These are based on the Complete Edition of the works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach which is being published by the Packard Humanities Institute in Los Altos, California, in cooperation with the BachArchiv Leipzig and the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften. Leading Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach scholars from Europe and the USA are engaged in this undertaking. It is the aim of the Packard Humanities Institute to make the works of this important Bach son well known again and it supports this goal through a very favorable retail price for these high quality scores. They can be ordered directly from the Packard Humanities Institute (www.cpebach.org), or in the case of the works described here they may also be ordered from Carus-Verlag.
Already available at Carus (selection): Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was an extremely prolific composer who enjoyed an outstanding reputation during his lifetime with the result that his music became known far and wide. The early works were influenced by the Berlin School. In his later works, however, this composer devel-oped a thoroughly individual style, independent of contemporary fashions, which is to be found especially in the sacred vocal works written during his years as Director of Music in Hamburg (1768–1788).

The Morgengesang am Schöpfungsfeste Wq 239 arose through a personal contact between the poet (F. G. Klopstock) and the composer. As in hardly any other work, the poem breathes the spirit of the close of the 18th century. Here, wholly in the sense of the Enlightenment a natural phenomenon, the sunrise, is used as a parable for the resurrection, which is thus made tangible. The spectacle of nature is the starting point for Bach’s composition, an eight-part, through-composed cantata for two sopranos, choir, flutes, strings and basso continuo. This “feast of creation” is intended as a commemoration of Sunday, the 7th day of creation. C. P. E. Bach’s Dank-Hymne is a large scale cantata by the 72-year-old composer written in Hamburg at the beginning of 1785 on the occasion of the birthday of an unknown personality. The cantata consists of two self-contained parts, the first of which is a hymn of praise to the Almighty God and to creation. Only in the considerably shorter second section is the birthday mentioned, albeit indirectly, and in the final chorus a praise of creation is again intoned, ending with the words “Schön ist Gottes Welt” (God’s world is beautiful). The Dank-Hymne is among Bach’s most modern vocal works and clearly points towards Joseph Haydn’s great oratorios. Fahre hin, du Lust der Welt Cantata HoWV II.172 (G) Solo S, 2 Vl, Bc / 13 min ed. Uwe Wolf The cantata written for the consecration of a church, Fahre hin, du Lust der Welt, surely does not fit within the creative output of this Dresden Kreuzkantor. Whereas normally he was not sparing in his opulently scored, large choral movements, in spite of the festive occasion for the work, this chambermusic-like cantata of all three movements is a gem. However, Homilius composed it during the time when, as organist of the Dresden Frauenkirche he was not responsible for polyphonic music. Possibly this lively solo cantata was written on commission for a church in the suburbs of Dresden. Recorded on CD Carus 83.236
12 chorale arrangements for organ and melody instrument ed. Ellen Exner Homilius left behind an unusually large repertoire of chorale arrangements for organ and melody instrument which were probably written during his tenure as organist at the Dresden Frauenkirche (1742–1755). An edition of all of his most wellknown contributions to this genre was published by Carus in 2008 within the framework of the edition of his selected works (37.106). The present edition now offers a selection of chorale arrangements on hymns which are still sung to the same melodies today. The sacred composition Gott will mich auch probieren was written during the early years of his tenure as Music Director at the Court of the Landgraves. In it he attempted to make the genre of the motet useful for church music in Darmstadt through innovative design and varied structure. The present chorale motet is a notably charming and catchy piece of choral music (easy to mid-level difficulty) which is excellently suited for use in today’s worship services.
Liturgically, the present cantata is meant to be performed at the turn of the year. For his setting of the text Buxtehude chose a two-part form with a concluding “Amen.” This plea for a propitious new year is given a special musical interpretation.

The Te Deum of 1832, large scale festive music, impresses through rapid changes of expression and warm orchestral colors. The 15-movement composition unites magnificent sound with at times eightpart choral movements and delicate arias. It experiments with unusual instrumental sonorities and ensemble groupings. The piece becomes highly dramatic when blaring trombones and trembling strings announce the Last Judgment, whereupon a sextet of soloists enter with a plea for salvation.
This is a beautiful and rewarding composition by a former member of the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir in Leipzig and later Dresden Kreuzkantor. In spite of the relatively easy level of difficulty, its effect will not fail to impress. This three-movement Christmas cantata for mixed choir and orchestra makes it possible to perform the piece both in worship services and in concert. Carus 10.020, full score ISMN M-007-14044-1

The Miserere in C minor exists in several authentic versions. The first version from 1735 was intended for the girls at the Ospedale degl’Incurabili in Venice. Carus offers a later version for mixed voices. Originally composed for use within the context of the church festivities during the latter part of Holy Week, this work comprises eight sections each, with a contrasting character. The ritornellos captivate immediately, in which short phrases and sequential units are elaborated into fine lines, as if sung by a bel canto-like solo voice. Instead of trying to achieve the effects of fright and horror, Hasse’s music refers rather to the consolation which is promised those who plead for mercy, and through its beauty wishes to move listeners and to lead them to devotion. The Halleluja and the final piece “Lebt als Kinder des Lichts” follow the principles of multilingualism and the use of double choir. To accompany the multi-voiced choral writing a scoring for winds was chosen, taking into account the festive character of this large symphonic composition. Immediately following his first opera Rheinberger composed a small dramatic cantata for children’s voices in 1863. It is based on a story from the Gospel of St. Mark. Among the highpoints of the cantata is a scene of awakening fashioned as a choral recitative with an expressive piano part and a large final chorus. Both of these helped to make the cantata very popular in Rheinberger’s days with boys’ as well as girls’ choirs. Music for solo voice Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672) Separate editions of Symphonia sacrae II The 27 concerti of the Symphoniae sacrae II are milestones in the development of the German-language sacred concerto for virtuoso solo singers, instruments (mostly violins) and basso continuo. Published one year before what became, by far, the more well-known Geistliche Chormusik of 1648, they show another artistic side of Schütz. In the Stuttgart Schütz Edition the works are now presented for the first time ever in an edition based on a comprehensive new investigation of the sources which does justice to the differentiated source situation. Based on the Complete Edition, published in 2012, all works with performance material will now be released in separate editions.

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839–1901)
A few church compositions have survived from the pen of Pietro Cassti, alto castrati at the Viennese Imperial Court. His 1732 setting of the antiphon Salve Regina is outstanding among these. It is conceived for Alto, continuo and two solo alto trombones or, as an alternative, a viola or a pair of gambas can also be added. This first edition is now made accessible and its unusual scoring recommend it for performance in both church and in concert. Carus 27.703, full score and parts, 26.50 € ISMN M-007-13941-4

Together with the Partita in E flat major the Partita in B flat major is without a doubt one of the most important compositions of Johann Ludwig Krebs, a pupil of Bach. Both works are from a six-part cycle, of which only the these two Partitas and the Partita in A minor have survived. Although in these works Krebs has oriented himself very closely on the model of his mentor Bach, nevertheless they show strong individual moments of creativity, wholly indebted to the sensitive (“empfindsam”) style. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) / Rudolf Lutz Sonata for organ in D minor based on O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden arranged and completed by R. Lutz (2007/8) after the Mendelssohnian fragment in the Bodleian Library Oxford / 15 min Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a gifted organ improviser, yet there exist only a few surviving examples of his improvisations. One of these will be found in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Here a short fragment on the chorale “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden,” which was probably improvised within the context of the great Bach concert which Mendelssohn presented in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1840. Robert Schumann reported in detail how Mendelssohn improvised on this chorale and how he introduced the BACH motive in the course of his improvisation. After careful study of Mendelssohn’s organ sonatas, in 2007/08 Rudolf Lutz expanded the fragment into a sonata in the style of the composer. Carus 18.120, 24 p., 15.50 € ISMN M-007-14002-1

Georg Reutter (1708–1772) Concerto in F major for harpsichord Cemb, 2 Vl, Bc / 10 min First edition, ed. Guido Erdmann Georg Reutter’s concise Concerto for Harpsichord in F major, published by Carus in a first edition, may have been composed in around 1750. The themes of this work in three movements are both succinct and appealing, while Reutter’s modest instrumentation (2 violins and basso continuo) is employed with esprit. In the melancholy, restrained middle movement both violins provide the foundation for the solo passages performed by the keyboard instrument. Especially in places of sacred worship this concerto would be more effective if an organ instead of a harpsichord is used. Carus 27.704, full score ISMN M-007-14070-0

The Edition will contain around 25 volumes. The first volume of the edition, the famous Messa a 4 voci con orchestra, is scheduled to be published in spring 2013. Giacomo Puccini, born in Lucca in 1858, is one of the most performed composers on the international opera stage. Next to Mozart and Verdi, his operas are among the most performed works in the world. His vocal and instrumental works for church and concert hall, on the other hand, have only recently begun increasingly to find a place in the public consciousness, following decades of being relegated to oblivion. In the course of time the awareness grew that Puccini’s complete works demanded a new evaluation. Increasingly he is no longer considered to be the last representative of an obsolete Italian bel canto, but rather as a musician seeking a new departure at the dawn of modernity. His compositional processes are more akin to the experiments on the borders of tonality pursued by such contemporaries as Debussy, Richard Strauss, Mahler and Schönberg, all of whom he knew and for whose works he showed a lively interest.
Favorable subscription price. The prerequisite for a closer examination of such issues and interconnections is a correct edition of his works, which until now has not been available but which will be fulfilled for the first time with the publication of the first scholarly critical Complete Edition of the Works of Puccini. Stuttgart Schütz Edition Heinrich Schütz (1585–1672) Cantiones sacrae SWV 53–93 (L) 4 voices, Bc ed. Uwe Wolf Today the Cantiones sacrae (1625) remain in the shadow of Schütz’s much more well known motet collection, the Geistliche Chormusik of 1648. This is due on the one hand to their Latin texts and to the devotional texts which often are not taken from the Bible, and on the other hand to the highly expressive style of the Cantiones. Schütz demands that the singers be open to a highly unusual music rich with dissonances. The reward for this venture will be an extraordinary depth and expressiveness and music truly beyond compare. In 1992 the Stuttgart Schütz Edition – the edition of the complete works of Heinrich Schütz – was taken over by Carus-Verlag, which has continued to publish it since then. It is a complete edition founded on a critical examination of the sources which presents today’s users an unproblematic, legible rendering of the music. In contrast to other Schütz editions the works are presented in their original keys and ranges, i.e., they are edited untransposed. All editorial additions or suggestions are indicated diacritically. The volumes include all essential information concerning the history of the works, their transmission, performance practice and liturgical function. Original clefs, as well as the ranges of the vocal parts and the upper instrumental parts are prefixed to the first brace of the score.

The composition of chorale preludes accompanied Reger throughout his entire career, even though they were composed primarily in the years from 1900 to 1902 and 1914 (Opus 135a). Each volume will be accompanied and supplemented by a DVD containing facsimiles of all relevant sources presently available. With the aid of the software program Edirom these will be compared and contrasted with commentary. This means differences between the sources will be immediately visible. Furthermore, an encyclopedic section, likewise in digital form, offers primarily information and illustrations relevant to the history of the works, as well as information about the dedicatees of the compositions, those musicians who participated in the first performances, and much more.

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (1732–1795) Thematic-systematic Catalog of the Musical Works Bach-Repertorium, Vol. 4 ed. Ulrich Leisinger
Thematisch-systematisches Verzeichnis der musikalischen Werke Bach-Repertorium Werkverzeichnisse zur Musikerfamilie Bach Band IV
No musical family has made such a significant contribution to the history of European music as the Bach family from Thuringia, in Saxony. From the 17th through 19th centuries one finds outstanding musicians among the family who participated in all levels of musical life whether it be town, court or church music – their works span all genres of vocal and instrumental music and reflect the stylistic developments of the individual eras in which they lived. Carus
Within the framework of the Bach-Repertorium research project at the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig, thematic catalogs are being compiled for all members of the Bach family. With catalogs which include incipits, texts, tables and indexes, the compositions will be described using a unified set of criteria and they will be based on the latest musicological research. To distinguish him from his brothers, in the 18th century Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was known as the “Bückeburger” Bach. His extensive opus encompasses all genres of instrumental and vocal music. Systematic research has led to the rediscovery of a number of works previously believed to have been lost, as well as to works which until now have been completely unknown; furthermore the existence of other lost works also has been verified. Thus today, for the first time an overview of the creative output of the second youngest Bach son is possible, which now occupies its own independent position in the history of 18th century music.
