In May, we recognized 23 Movers and Shakers who are making a considerable impact in our community. On June 7, we were able to honor these young professionals at the Movers & Shakers Party for a night of food, drinks, and live music at Chatham Station. HUGE thanks to all of the participating local businesses that made this possible, with a special shout-out to Astral Tequila and SideBar for drinks, City Barbeque for the delicious food, and Thrio for lending us their musical talents for the evening. See you next year!
Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls
hosted a grand opening event on May 26 to celebrate its newest location in Cary at Waverly Place Shopping Center. This is the second Mason’s restaurant in North Carolina, with another location in Raleigh also owned by Jon and Amy Narducci. masonslobster.com
Ricky Moore, chef-owner of Saltbox Seafood Joint in Durham, won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast. This is a huge honor, as Moore was one of only 22 chefs nationwide to take home an award at an event widely-recognized as the “Oscars of the food world.” Congratulations, Ricky!

THE TOWN OF CARY hosted an
interactive Community Voice Tree Summit on July 11 at the Herbert C. Young Community Center. Attendees answered questions, identified preferences, and gave feedback on Cary’s tree-related initiatives and programs to help shape the vision for Cary’s tree canopy.
With the help of Apex resident and co-author Catherine “Cat” Lewis, Christi Hales, a Cary native and owner of Papillon the salon, is the subject of a new book titled Bittersweet: Faith Lost and Found, and the DNA Test That Brought A Baby Back to Life. Cat, who overcame personal tragedy to tell Christi’s story, tells a tale of hope and reconciliation in Christi’s voice.
The Cary Fire Department
celebrated its 100th
Anniversary at the beginning of June with a movie on the lawn, fire truck parade, street dance, and fire station open houses.
In observance of Juneteenth — a holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US — becoming an official Town holiday, the columns of the Cary Art Center were lit in red, yellow, and green to honor the heritage and meaning of the day.
The Annual Triangle Restaurant Week
summer event ran from June 6 to 12. Participating restaurants within Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, and surrounding areas offered a special two- or three-course prix fixe menu, offering residents and visitors a great way to indulge in the area’s finest cuisine.
Chapel Hill-based digital artist MATT MCCARTHY displayed MAGNUS CATTUS — featuring 20+ giant cat pieces — at the Cary Arts Center from June 2 to 28 and hosted a meet and greet on June 3. McCarthy’s humorous work has been seen by millions after going viral on social media.

MACKENZIE HICKS, a 12-year-old Apex resident, appeared in the Amazon series The Summer I Turned Pretty, an adaptation of a popular young adult book written by Jenny Han, a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. The show was filmed in Wilmington and aired on June 17. Mackenzie appears as the flashback version of the main character.

Following requests from Cary citizens, the newly launched CARY EBIKE PILOT PROGRAM now allows temporary use of electric-assisted bicycles on greenways until December 31, 2022. Be safe! Cary residents had the chance to shop for hidden treasures at the Annual Senior Center Yard Sale
on June 11. Shoppers sifted through antiques, collectibles, electronics, clothing, furniture, and much more! All proceeds went to support the Cary Senior Center and senior clubs.
Cary resident Joya Joseph, an Indian American first-time
filmmaker, had a screening of her first major short film entitled Blaming and Shaming at the Lotus Movie Theater on May 21. The story focuses on Indian American characters and actors
set in NC, and Joseph is the director, writer, producer, and leading actor.
The Cary duo The One Eighties,
consisting of Daniel Cook and Autumn Brand, released their single “Dead Star Light” on June 3. The song combines traditional roots instrumentation, guitar, drums, bass, and pedal steel guitar with lush string arrangements and vintage synths. They plan on releasing a series of singles before putting out their debut album in early 2023.
On June 11, the Town of Apex held its annual Apex Pride Festival
in celebration of our LGBTQ+ community members and loved ones. Attendees enjoyed a day of music, food, games, vendors, and other fun activities.

ROMEO’S PIZZA opened its newest location in Cary at the end of June, located on Mills Park Drive. The new Cary location joins the successful Apex location that opened in 2018.
