About Sosúa has an interesting history, as during and after the end of the Second World War, the then dictator, Rafael Trujillo offered to accept up to 100,000 Jewish refugees and in the end about 800 German and Austrian Jewish refugees settled in Sosúa where the government provided them with land and resources with which they created a dairy and cheese factory. Descendants of the original settlers still live in Sosúa, where they maintain a synagogue and a museum. The town was little known until tourism took off in the island in the mid 1980s. There are several different beaches and all are within a 12 minute walk from Casa De Compai.Playa Sosua is the town’s main beach and is a fun, colorful and lively beach which is approximately one kilometer long, with a row of shacks along the back, selling food, drinks and souvenirs. The beach has sheltered, calm waters, and around 100 meters out there is a good reef for snorkeling. It is a great place to spend the day.There are four other beaches, and others come and go following the effects of storms. These tend to be quieter for those who want a more relaxed beach day.
