THE ARTANE SCHOOL OF MUSIC
SOME WORDS OF WELCOME
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the National Concert Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity for you all to see at first hand the talent and potential that is developed in our School of Music. We are particularly exited this year as we now have three wonderful new ensembles to entertain you-The Artane Youth Choir, Artane Community Choir and the Artane String Group. These new ensembles show that our school is ever growing and expanding, and heading in new and exciting directions These new initiatives complement our existing ensembles and have given a great opportunity for many in the community to take part and enjoy music as never before. These are exciting and new directions and bring fresh approaches and challenges to us all in Artane. These new ensembles reflect the hard work and dedication behind the scenes carried out by our talented teaching staff, Director of Music, and new Manager The Artane Band was also involved in many new and different challenges as well with appearances at the Belfast Tattoo with the Ravens Marching Band and more recently at the American Collegiate Ice-Hockey Tournaments in Belfast, as well as delivering their usual immaculate performances in Croke Park. Our Senior Band has also taken a major role in promoting the School in many appearances and fundraising concerts particularly at Christmas. Without question our Bands and Ensembles are breaking new ground, and it is fantastic to see the development and growth in the School in such a short period of time. I’m sure you would like to join me in wishing all of our performers, young and older alike, the very best of luck tonight, as always,
Chairman Artane School of Music Board of Management
A MESSAGE FROM KEITH KELLY – GENERAL MANAGER
Good evening ladies and gentlemen and a very warm welcome to you to our 2016 annual Showcase One year ago I was given the greatest opportunity of my career to date, when the Board of Management of the Artane School of Music appointed me as general manager. Over that year I have had the pleasure of working with an exceptional staff and volunteer team as well as a dedicated and talented student body. In 2013, the Artane School of Music set out on a course of development, guided by the 2013 – 2016 Strategic Plan. This plan was informed by the opinions and input of parents, students, alumni and staff. The document outlined our goals, ambitions and hopes over the three to fours years of existence. Without doubt this plan was the most valuable guide to me personally as I settled into this new role. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to that plan and hope that I have been able to meet some of your expectations over the last year. As that strategic plan comes to the end of it’s term, I’m looking forward to being part of the next one and working with you all as we head towards our 150 anniversary. 2016 presents a number of reasons for us to celebrate. In 1886, the Artane Band performed for the first time for the Gaelic Athletic Association. This performance was at the North Circular Road Grounds for the Whit Monday Games and began a relationship that has lasted to the present day. Tonight and throughout the year we will celebrate that 130 year friendship. 2016 also marks the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. We are honoured to be part of a number of celebrations for this special year, including our participation in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. “ March to Dublin" written by Pete St. John (Fields of Athenry, Rare Old Times) for the Artane Band in 1988 has been selected as the official march of the parade in this centenary year and we will be honoured to perform it for the Lord Mayor outside of the GPO on March 17th. I hope that you all enjoy our performance this evening. The debut performance of the Artane Youth Choir, Artane Community Choir and our String Group show that our school is ever growing and expanding. I’m looking forward to seeing how these groups and our bands grow over the next 12 months and look forward to working with you all to make it happen. Sincerely
General Manager
